Two Wheaton men arrested
for Yonkerville Store robbery
Charlea Estes
Two men were arrested for
the Yonkerville Store robbery
and ended up with multiple
charges for different crimes.
Jerry Ray Hartkopp, 54, of
Wheaton, and James Erick
Hooper, 25, of Wheaton, are
both being charged for the
burglary and are being held in
Hartkopp
Hooper
the Barry County Jail.
According to affidavits of
probable cause, Hartkopp and
Hooper broke into the Yonkerville Store located 2912
Highway 60 in Monett on
March 27 around 5 a.m. To
gain entry, the two caused over
$1,000 worth of damage to the
doors. Once inside, they stole
around $175 in cash as well
as collectible coins and credit
cards.
According to the probable
cause by Barry County Sheriff ’s Detective Robert Evenson,
a security guard for Jack Henry saw Hooper’s vehicle leaving the scene and took down
the license plate number. Once
questioned, Hooper admitted
that he and Hartkopp committed the burglary with Hooper
as the look out.
Hooper and Hartkopp
were each charged with burglary in the second degree,
property damage in the first
degree and stealing. They were
each issued $15,000 cash-only
bonds for those charges.
Both men received additional charges related to drugs
when Evenson and Detective
Doug Henry served search
warrants at their residences

Kidnapping suspect recaptured after jail escape
Charlea Estes
Matthew Miller,
the younger brother
charged in the kidnapping of a Washburn woman in January 2014, escaped
from the McDonald
County Jail sometime between Sunday, April 10, evening and Monday,
April 11, morning
with another inmate
and has since been
captured in Texas.
Miller, 22, of Eagle
Rock, escaped from
the jail with the
other inmate Keith
Davis, 24, of Anderson, according to
McDonald County Sheriff
Michael Hall.
Sheriff
Hall
stated,
“There is a shower area
that does not have security
surveillance, and there was
a piece of metal that they
were able to remove and
squeeze through the cinder block wall.” The space
opened up into a mechanical room and they exited
through there to escape.
It is suspected that the
two escaped in a van from
a canoe rental business.
Hall said, “They found a
Miller
van down in Springdale,
and the canoe place didn’t
even know it was missing
yet since it’s not the right
season.”
The stolen van was
located at a business in
Springdale that Davis has
ties to allegedly stealing
from before, according to
Hall. From there, the duo
stole two motorcycles and a
Toyota Land Cruiser.
Hall initially believed
the two were still in the
area, but Texas authorities
captured the two men on
Tuesday.
Davis
Hall was working in conjunction with the Springdale, Ark., Police Department,
the Barry County Sheriff ’s
Department and Highway
Patrols to locate Miller and
Davis before they turned up
in Texas.
Both Davis and Miller
were captured in Bowie
County, Texas, and are
awaiting extradition back to
Missouri, according to Hall.
The pair were located
after the stolen vehicles
were found by some railSee ESCAPE on 3A
Fundraising campaign to benefit four local nonprofits
Charlea Estes
Four local charities will
take part of the Give Ozarks
Day on May 3, an initiative
of grant matching through
the Community Foundation of the Ozarks (CFO).
Four affiliates of the Cassville Community Foundation, PACE, Crowder College, the Cassville YMCA
and the Cassville Education
Fund, will be participating.
The Cassville Community Foundation works under the umbrella of the CFO
as a way to earn more money for the investments of
their endowments. Multiple
community groups work
with the local community
foundation to earn more to
benefit the Cassville area.
The Give Ozarks Day
began last year for the first
time. The purpose of it is to
have a one-day pledge drive
to offer local charities an
incentive to help raise money. Throughout the 24-hour
period, grant matching and
additional prizes are available. During the campaign,
charities can earn additional money provided by CFO
sponsors.
In 2015, 150 charities
participated in the event
and together they raised
more than $1 million.
Sponsors of the event provided $200,000 in prizes
and matching incentives.
Since the event was so
successful last year, the
pledge drive will continue
as an annual event. Not
only are charities given the
opportunity for matching grants, but it also gives
them an additional push to
get their local community
involved.
Minimum
donations
during the pledge drive
are $5. Cassville Community Foundation president Landon Fletcher said,
“Ideally, we want people to
donate $20 and split their
donation $5 between each
of them. Or if they want
to donate $10 and split it
between two of them, they
can do that. Plus they can
always give more.”
PACE supports a variety of local fundraising efforts for organizations that
have not yet obtained their
nonprofit status. PACE
owns the Cassville Cham-
Security Bank of Cassville recently donated $500 to the Cassville Community Foundation as part
of their grant-matching initiative. Pictured above are, from left to right: Jon Horner, Security

and the Rotary Club rodeo

to the respective organizations for $1 per year. PACE
also sponsors the Christmas light maintenance
downtown, the Cassville
wrestling team and others.
Through PACE, individuals and businesses can make
donations to area groups
and use it the donation as a
tax write-off.
Crowder College is using
the funds from Give Ozarks
Day for specific projects.
Crowder will be using
the funds to sponsor two
projects. The main project
will be to create a new classroom, which director AnSee GIVE OZARKS on 5A

Seligman park improvements to increase access
By next week, the armor on the skate park behind Seligman City Hall will be replaced, making the
equipment more usable for residents.

parking lot to the splash pad
and putting in some benches
to make parents more comfortable while watching their
children.
Nichols said, “We already
have people asking when
the splash pad will be open,
and I’m thinking mid-May.”
Nichols said that the new
concrete needs to be poured
and then they are replacing
the gravel around the splash
pad with sod, which will take
two weeks to settle before
they can turn on the pad.
The city council approved
Cline Construction to do the
concrete work for $2,000. The
concrete should be poured
next week and the sod will be
put in shortly after.
The city also has plans to
make improvements to the
old city park on Highway
DD. Nichols said, “The park
was vandalized a few years
ago, and we finally had to just
lock it down.”
However, now there will
be a proposal for the city
council to vote on regarding putting in a 1/10th mile
walking track, lighting and
security cameras to protect
the improvements.

road workers. The plates
matched the stolen vehicles
from Springdale, and then
authorities chased the men
into a wooded area before
they were captured.
Miller,
his
brother,
Michael Miller, and his
brother’s girlfriend, Amanda Rhodes, allegedly kidnapped a woman from her
Washburn home in McDonald County on January 3, 2014, put her in the
trunk, used her debit card,
tossed her down a ravine
and eventually abandoned
her car in the Roaring River
arm of Table Rock Lake.
Davis was being held for
multiple counts of receiving
stolen property and tampering with motor vehicles
as well as a charge for resisting arrest.
Miller is facing charges
in both McDonald and Barry Counties for the kidnapping and related offenses
along with his brother Michael, 28, and Rhodes, of
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Michael pled guilty to
his charges in both Barry
and McDonald Counties
last month and was subsequently sentenced to 18
years in McDonald County
and 14 years in Barry County.
Rhodes is charged with
kidnapping, burglary in
the first degree, tampering
with a motor vehicle in the
first degree and two counts
of stealing in McDonald
County.
Matthew is facing charges of felonious restraint,
tampering with a motor vehicle in the first degree, assault in the third degree and
fraudulent use of a credit/
debit device in Barry County, but requested a change
of venue to Stone County.
In McDonald County, he is
charged kidnapping, tampering with a motor vehicle
in the first degree and burglary in the second degree.
Then, while he was in the
Barry County Jail, he was
charged with getting a jailer
to bring marijuana to him
and other inmates.
Matthew had an initial arraignment in front
of Judge Alan Blankenship scheduled for today,
Wednesday, April 13, at 9
a.m. His charge for getting
a jailer at the Barry County
Jail to deliver marijuana
has an arraignment hearing scheduled for Thursday, April 21, at 8:30 a.m. in
front of Barry County Judge
Robert Foulke.
Both Davis and Miller
have both been charged
with escape from a county
jail in McDonald County
now, as well.

The city of Seligman began the early stages of a variety of park improvement
projects to make the facilities
more usable for residents.
The skate park behind city hall is getting
$2,300 worth of new armor.
Brian Nichols, city clerk, said
that the city has actually gotten a few years more use out
of the original equipment
than they expected. “We put
the skate park in in 2003 and
the armor had an estimated
10 year lifespan, so we did
pretty good on it.”
The armor used on the
skate park equipment is a
composite fiber resin that is
weather-resistant and holds
up well to heavy impact. The
new armor will be installed
by public works employees
as soon as the special screws
come in, which should be by
next week. The city already
received the armor replacement panels.
The city is also pouring a
new concrete pad from the

Daily Buzz
reaches
seniors
The Central Crossing Senior Center has entered its
second month of their The
Daily Buzz service and already there are already over
50 individuals taking advantage of the program.
The service is a quick
call to a home bound senior
typically living all alone, just
to make sure they’re doing
okay. If not or if no one answers, the callers will try to
call a back-up number or
individual, someone who
could physically check on
the senior if need be.
It’s been said that no one
cares how much you know
until they know how much
you care.
If you’d like to be a part
of the service, call the Central Crossing Senior Center
at (417) 858-6952 and ask
for Sara Patterson, administrator, or Sue Mead, the
Daily Buzz coordinator.

I was just thinking the other day about how Christian morals are under attack, which means that
Christians are under attack. Our laws protect immorality on TV, and in the other media outlets , as
freedom of expression while banning prayer in our schools, and religious symbols such as the 10
commandments from public display because of “separation of church and state.”
I for one, think the “state” needs all the “church” it can get.
How did we get into this mess? Christians did not stand up for biblical morals. Why? Perhaps
Paul was warning us in Romans 1:16; “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power
of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
God’s will cannot prevail in our families, our congregations, and our state or at the national level,
if we are shamed into silence and inactivity.
As Christians, let’s stand up for God’s word as presented by Jesus Christ and the inspired writers.
Stand up in our homes by teaching and living godly lives for our children to follow. Stand up
in our communities by refusing to compromise our lives for the sake of being politically correct.
Stand up at the ballot box by voting for the candidate that most closely reflects God’s will.
Will it matter? Yes, because it is the right thing to do in God’s sight. Let’s resolve to never be
ashamed, to live righteously before our fellow man and our Lord.
The family at The Mill Street Church of Christ invites you to join us as we strive to be good
citizens in God’s kingdom.

Wildcat kids get a lesson in show choir with end of season performance

As part of their last local
performance for the year,
the Cassville show choirs
got the elementary, inter-
mediate and middle school
students involved.
Over the past week, the
Show Choir members held
an after-school camp for
Centerstage, the co-ed Show Choir, performed their competition piece Monday night, as well. Their piece “Forever Young”

three days where they taught
kindergarten
through
eighth graders moves and
tunes to different songs for
each age group. Students
let their hard work shine
in a performance on Monday night, April 11, at the
FEMA building on campus
which included not only the
younger students’ pieces,
but solos, Show Choir competition pieces, and ensembles from different choir
members.
The choirs at Cassville
are directed by Mrs. Mary
Richmiller and Mrs. Leslie
McCullough.
Kindergartners and first
graders performed a special
song called “Just For Fun,”
second and third graders
sang “Born to Make Music”, fourth and fifth graders sang “Get Up, Get Up,
Get Up!” and sixth through
eighth graders performed
“All Jazzed Up.”
Cassville’s State ensembles sang their pieces,
while the two Show Choirs,
NBA (No Boys Allowed)
and Centerstage performed
their competition pieces to
the wide eyes of the younger kids who dedicated the
last few days to the camp.
Toward the end of the
night, the graduating seniors presented Mrs. Richmiller with a parting gift.
First, senior Drake Thomas
asked the crowd to stand
up if Mrs. Richmiller made
a difference in their life or
someone they knew. Almost the entire crowd was
on their feet.
Thomas then shared a
story of Mrs. Richmiller
telling them she wanted a
blanket with all of their faces on it, so the seniors made
it happen. She was presented with the quilt at the
show while seniors shared
their memories with teary
eyes about the impact she
has had in their lives.
For more photos from
Monday night’s performance, see page 16A.

Choir camp were sixth through eighth graders who performed
“All Jazzed Up.” The middle schoolers wowed the crowd with

Golden Museum opens for season, displays to awe patrons
er. Winfred and his wife, Lee
Ona, opened the museum in
1993 after acquiring a collection from the Trail of Tears
Museum in Huntsville, Ark.
But don’t be fooled, before
The ancient pottery on display at the museum is in beautiful
condition, showing little wear despite its age. Pottery lines the
upper shelving in different wings of the museum.
drive, but plan to spend most
of your day there.
It’s rare that a museum
has “something for everyone”
despite most advertising as
such. In the case of the Barry
County treasure in Golden,
it’s true. Spanning the walls
and shelves of the museum
are everything from vintage
lunch boxes to massive crystals and minerals to items
confiscated from the county’s
own jail to war memorabilia to glassware that glows
under blacklights to Native
American artifacts to...the
list seems to never end.
I’ve been to the museum a
few times over the years, each
time led through room after
room by owner Winfred Pri-
that, Winfred was a collector
and told me that he finally
decided to build it when he
ran out of attic room.
For me, Winfred’s stories
of how he got the various
collections are as interesting
as the artifacts themselves.
Some are fairly straight forward: someone called, the
Priers bought the collection,
and it was added to the museum. But some of the stories
are more interesting than
that.
Winfred added a nest of
preserved dinosaur eggs to
the museum this year, one
of only four known nests in
the world that contains more
than 20 eggs. This one has 29.
“The woman wanted to sell it
to send her daughter to college, so they called me. A lot
of people call me.”
Oftentimes a prized collection enters the doors
because the owner passed
away and asked to have it
displayed for others to enjoy. Some collections are for
things long since forgotten,
like over 1,300 intricate butter dishes or crystal vases for
flowers in cars, the original
air freshener.
Winfred
remembers
where most of the things
in the museum came from,
with a handful of them bearing tags to indicate where
they came from. Some tags
show where grandkids have
given Winfred pieces for the
collection. You’ll also see
some local history in a space
dedicated to Cassville High
School’s football State Championship wins in 2008 and
2009, a team their grandson
played for.
Some pieces are worldrecord holders. Others are
just impressive in their own
right. Winfred and Lee Ona’s
collection rivals many others. He said, “I saw a guy who
said he had the largest desert rose in the world. So we
stopped by and saw it.” Winfred chuckled, “I didn’t tell
him I had one twice as big at
the museum.”
The sheer massive size of
some of the minerals, like the
desert rose, which is actually selenite, a rock that looks
like rose due to sand erosion
in deserts. Other jaw-dropping samples include crystals, amethysts and more.
Many had to have special
platforms built to hold their
weight. Winfred said, “At
first, I didn’t want ‘em. Why
would you want just a bunch
of rocks. But after looking at
them, I’m just amazed.”
Winfred doesn’t pretend
to know the history of everything in the museum or the
origins of how his extensive
mineral collection formed,
but he does have a deep appreciation for all of them.
And, if I’m honest, I’m sure
he has forgotten more history than I ever knew to begin with.
So take an afternoon or
a day, make the drive to the
curve where Highways 86
and J meet and enter the
most interesting museum
I’ve stepped foot in.
The Golden Museum
opened for the season yesterday, Tuesday, April 12,
and will stay open through
the summer until October
31. The hours are Tuesday
through Saturday, 10:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m., with special
tours available after hours
by reservation. Admission
to the museum is free, but
guests are welcome to make
donations.
Their website is www.
goldenpioneermuseum.org/
and they are on Facebook
under Golden Pioneer Museum.
Museum owner Winfred Prier stands by some of the new acquisitions to the museum. On the right is a preserved dinosaur egg
nest with 29 eggs in it. It is one of four known nests in the world
with over 20 eggs.

The overall cost of the
project will be $4,600, which
will be paid out of the parks
budget, if approved. The annual parks budget in the city
is $21,100 for 2016. The skate
park armor is also being paid
for out of the parks budget,
but the concrete pad is a capital improvements project.
Nichols said that they
hope next year will bring
even more improvements to
the old city park. He said,
“We’d like to install around
10 exercise stations for fitness
equipment. That’ll be next
year probably.” Equipment
would include things like a
balance beam, an outdoor
elliptical, weight machines,
pull up bar and others.
Nichols added that they
are also considering installing playground equipment at
the old park to keep children
occupied while their parents
use the equipment.
Improvements to the
Seligman parks are drawing
additional patrons to use the

Barry County Advertiser
Purdy March Character Education medal winners
Letter to the Editor
Here we go again.
We need some help. Actually, it’s the dogs who need your
help. Two dogs now roam the upper hillside of Wildwood,
heartbreakingly abandoned. One is a buff-colored, medium
size shorthair that we think can be reunited with her family.
The other, a grey, spotted female, wandered up the hill from
the park.
After it became obvious to us and our neighbors that these
animals were neglected, we became the soft-touch handouts
that the dogs need to survive. They love tablescraps and I
make sure they get some real dog food during the day. At least
they are getting fed enough that they stopped dumpster diving
in the blue trash containers.
We tried the obvious solution and called the Haven of the
Ozarks, hoping for a temporary shelter. The nice gentleman
there informed us that they had no room at this time and the
dogs would have to be placed on a waiting list. A waiting list!
Unfortunately, this is not an unusual situation in Cassville
and surrounding areas.
We call the spotted gray Lady Bird. She has those trusting eyes and is the first one to come for food. This one loves
to be touched, rubbed, and scratched. She would be a great
kid’s dog.
Lilly, the larger buff dog, is suspicious of strangers. It took
some patience to get close to this one, but hunger finally did
the trick. Now she comes and eats, accepting food directly
from my hand. She is the only one with a collar, and she has
a tag showing she has been previously chipped and adopted
through the All 4 Paws shelter in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. Brittany at All 4 Paws answered my email immediately
when I was seeking information.
Napoleon, the little hunting dog in the picture, is our
neighbor’s dog and is no fool. He tags along with the others,
knowing he is going to score a handout or two just from association.
So here we are. If either of these dogs is your pet, shame
on you. This is yet another opportunity to remind everyone
that being a pet owner is a big responsibility. Man up and do
what’s best for your animals. Spay, neuter, provide, rehome if
necessary. NEVER dump or abandon.
But, if you have a home, a heart, and a dog-friendly yard,
contact me through the Barry County Advertiser. Lady Bird
would love to be your loyal companion. Lilly may need a permanent home as well.
The best dogs are free.
-Lee Stubblefield
Purdy Elementary Principal Janet Boys announced the character education medal winners for the month of March. In partnership
with elementary counselor Gary Jurgensen, Purdy’s kindergarten
through fourth grade teachers present a different character trait
each month. At the end of the month, each teacher nominates one
student who best exemplifies the trait presented. These students receive character medals from Mrs. Boys at a special assembly.
In March, students focused on Perseverance. March medal
winners are fourth graders Julia McDonald and Dasia Schronk;
third graders Kira Hess, Zoey Webb and Shawn Craig; second
graders Leann Robertson, Kyle Clevenger and Angel Flores; first
graders Carlos Garcia, Leonel Villa and Sherlyn Paxtor; and kindergartners Karma Earp, Gabriel Gonzalez and Libby Burt.

ROBBERY from FRONT
in Wheaton on March 31.
Hooper’s apartment on North
Kelly had multiple drug-related items in the kitchen. The
detectives found drug paraphernalia, loaded syringes,
scales, Sudafed and methamphetamine held in Ice Breakers
mint containers for distribution. Hooper’s residence was
located within 2,000 feet of
government funded housing.
Hooper was charged with
manufacturing a controlled
substance and attempted
distribution of a controlled
substance. A $40,000 cashonly bond was issued for those
charges.
When the detectives search
Hartkopp’s residence on Hurlburt Street in Wheaton, Hartkopp’s girlfriend, Marsha Branham, slammed and locked
the door to keep officers out,
according to Det. Evenson.
Hartkopp was working at
George’s at the time the search
warrant was served. Branham
was allegedly in the process of
trying to hide or destroy drug
evidence when they gained entry into the house.
Officers found drugs and
drug paraphernalia in a search
of the bedroom that Hartkopp
and Branham shared. According to Evenson, Branham also
stated that she and Hartkopp
had used methamphetamine
earlier in the day.
Hartkopp and Branham
were each charged with possession of a controlled substance and issued $15,000
bonds.
Branham was released on
the bond on April 2. Hartkopp
is currently being held in the
Barry County Jail on a $30,000
bond, and Hooper is being
held on a $95,000 bond.

CASSVILLE DENTAL CARE
CONSCIOUS
SEDATION
Be Wise To Guy Wires.
• It Really Works! You really
can relax through your dental
appointment.
Smart use of farm machinery means watchingout for electric lines to
avoid potentially lethal contact. But did you know that the guy wires
on power poles provide groundingas well as support? Damaginga
guy wire can cause an electric current disruption, creatinga
dangerous situation.
• You will have little or no memory
of the experience.
• Complex dental treatments that
often require six to eight
appointments, can be done in
as little as one or two!
• People who have difficulty
getting numb will find that
sedation dentistry eliminates
this problem.

Observe the 10-foot rule to stay clear of guy wires as well as overhead
power lines when you work with or move equipment. And be sure to
contact your electric cooperative should you have a problem with
either type of wire.

Celebrate school
libraries April 10-16
This week, the Missouri
Association of School Librarians (MASL) joins libraries in schools, on campuses and in communities
nationwide in celebrating
National Library Week, a
time to highlight the value
of libraries, librarians and library workers.
Libraries today are more
than repositories for books
and other resources. Often
the heart of their communities, campuses or schools,
libraries are deeply committed to the places where their
patrons live, work and study.
Libraries are trusted places
where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each
other, to enrich and shape
the community and to address local issues.
MASL is celebrating National Library Week by advocating for Missouri school
children. Because school libraries transform lives every
day, every student deserves
access to a quality school
library program and a certified school librarian. Twenty-five separate state studies, including a 2003 study
conducted in Missouri, show
that quality school library
programs run by certified
school librarians increase
student achievement. The
impact of school librarians
and library programs is one
of the best-kept secrets in
education, and the MASL
wants to change that.

without a full-time, certified

one study found that “[r]

Arvest collecting for
1 Million Meals campaign
Arvest Bank’s 1 Million
Meals initiative challenges
bank associates, customers
and community members
to participate in fundraising
efforts and nonperishable
food drives to fight hunger
in the more than 120 communities the bank serves.
The initiative is needed, as
the Food Research & Action
Center (FRAC) reports 17
percent of American households surveyed in 2014 reported food hardship, or
not having adequate funds
to provide enough food for
their family.
Arvest is conducting
its annual initiative in the
spring this year rather than
its traditional fall timeframe due largely to the fact
food banks report an increased need for food items
in the summer, when many
children do not have the
benefit of eating meals at
the schools they attend. In
2013, for example, the number of Missouri free and
reduced-price students who
participated in the National
School Lunch Program was
less than 3 percent of the
number who participated
in the program during the
2013-2014 school year, according to the FRAC. Donations to food banks also
tend to be lower in the
spring and summer than at
other times of the year.
Arvest Bank kicked off
the two-month, bank-wide
effort to provide at least one
million meals to local, hungry families today, and it
will continue through May
28. The initiative will conclude during the first two
full weeks of June, when
donations are presented to
69 local organizations who
feed the hungry in their
communities.
Arvest Bank has part-

nered with the Cassville
Community Food Pantry in
Cassville and The Alliance
of Churches Food Pantry
in Shell Knob for the duration of the initiative. All
donations received will go
to these two organizations
to provide meals to local,
hungry families. Cassville
and Shell Knob residents
can participate in 1 Million Meals by dropping off
nonperishable food items
or making monetary donations at the Arvest branches
in Cassville and Shell Knob
or calling (866) 952-9523.
Every dollar raised through
1 Million Meals provides
the equivalent of five meals
for those in need.
“Our associates are excited to kick off our sixth
annual 1 Million Meals
campaign,” said Mark Davis, Arvest Community
Bank president in Cassville
and Shell Knob. “We are
looking forward to joining
with our customers and the
community in an effort to
fight hunger at a local level.
“The donations we raise
in Cassville will benefit the
Cassville Community Food
Pantry and in Shell Knob
will benefit The Alliance
of Churches Food Pantry.
The donations will provide
help in the summer, a time
when many children go
without meals they might
normally receive at school.
It’s a privilege for Arvest
Bank to help these two fine
organizations during a time
of year that has been a challenge for fundraising and
providing meals to families
in need.”
Each of Arvest Bank’s 69
recipient organizations was
selected on a local basis.

Hummingbird migration begins
The Missouri Department
of
Conservation
(MDC) encourages people to discover nature this
spring by learning about the
ruby-throated
hummingbird. Missourians will be
seeing this delightful bird
this time of year a lot more
now due to migration. In an
average year, ruby-throated
hummingbirds arrive in
Missouri around early to
mid-April.
“Hummingbird
migration all depends on
the weather,” MDC Wildlife Ecologist Brad Jacobs
said. “This year’s migration should be about average for hummingbirds and
they should be increasing in
numbers over the month of
April.”
Jacobs noted a great website map from hummingbirds.net to visit to see when
and where hummingbirds
are migrating: http://bit.
ly/1cCTWae. The hummingbird migration map shows
locations of where rubythroated
hummingbirds
have been spotted already
this year in North America.
The website allows visitors
to help out with this by entering the dates and exact
locations where people have
spotted hummingbirds.
Just like most birds,
hummingbirds typically migrate south in early fall and
migrate back north in the
spring.
“Our
hummingbirds
begin their southward migration in mid-August
and most are gone by early
October,” Jacobs said. “A
few overwinter in extreme
southern coastal states, with
most wintering from southern Mexico to Costa Rica.
Migration means some of
them fly nonstop for 600
miles from the Gulf coast of
the U.S. to the Yucatan Peninsula over the Gulf of Mexico. The often lose half their
body weight during this
trans-Gulf, 24-hour flight.”
Early spring migrant
hummingbirds in Missouri
rely on sap oozing from
sapsucker-drilled
holes
and insects for food. With
warmer weather they soon
will switch to eating nectar
from many different kinds of
Scott Tech students get hands-on experience
flowers later in spring, which
gives them energy needed to
catch insects all day long to
feed their young.
Hummingbirds are more
than just a delight to watch
flying around, they also play
a very important part in our
ecosystem.
“Hummingbirds are important pollinators for many
species of plants that require
just such a long-billed pollinator,” Jacobs said. “Because
of their small size, hummingbirds also risk ending
up as food for many predators such as large insects,
spiders, birds and frogs.”
Hummingbirds are summer residents throughout the state either around
nectar
feeders
outside
homes and in parks and
gardens.
Hummingbirds
nest in wooded areas, and
are frequently observed
near forests, and streams.

Cadets involved in the Junior Achievement program at Scott Technology spent the day listening to inspiring speakers, seeing first hand new technology, robotics, touring the call center, learning Code and experiencing virtual texting and driving challenges.
Frank Jillian from Kyocera also shared new technology and give aways.
Jomo Castro, regional manager of external affairs for AT&T, who is serving as 2016 National

It was a day of hands on learning and thinking for the cadets. Sometimes it only takes one
