Baltimore Trash Talk (BTT), with 88 likes as of yesterday morning, chronicles the city’s trash problems and the efforts of concerned citizens—including Parlato herself— to clean things up. The Facebook page is a platform for discussion, a place to air complaints and identify probem areas, and the glue that can help bind individual efforts into a collective movement. “It started with the Park,” says Parlato, who lives very close to Patterson Park. “I would like this to go further. Welcome to Highlandtown Funded by a grant from the Baltimore Community Foundation, artist Nancy Jagelka, center, partnered with Pam Stein, second from right, and Lauren Siegel, bottom right, to create a mosaic for Highlandtown. In a joint project between young and old, residents from age 5 to 86 helped construct the mosaic at the corner of S. Conking St. and Bank St. Keeping tradition alive at J. Patrick’s BY ERIK ZYGMONT [email protected] Like the pubs in Ireland itself, J. Patrick’s Irish Pub in Locust Point is a center of culture, society, music, dancing, and fun, according to regular Al Patterson and others. In an effort to preserve J. Patrick’s, Patterson and several others have formed the “Friends of J. Patrick’s.” Since owner Joe Byrne died in July, the future of the pub has remained unknown, and some community members have been worried for their place of relaxation and fellowship. Patterson, who lives in South Baltimore, visited the Locust Point Civic Association last week to speak about the effort to keep the pub open and viable. The project, which began about a month and a half ago, aims to replace the water main plus “services” for many streets in Locust Point. Services are the pipes running from the main to the meters of individual residences. Past the meters, property owners are responsible for their own plumbing. Phase I tackles Decatur St. north of E. Fort Ave. and the short length of Beason St. west of Decatur. Phase II replaces the main on Andre St. north of E. Fort Ave. “Phases I and II will be finished by the end of August,” said Randy Vandyke, super- intendent at Spiniello. Phase III replaces the mains on Cooksie St. north of E. Clement St., Beason St., Marriott St., and the portion of Cuba St. west of Towson St. Additionally, the portions of Haubert St., Hull St., and Towson St. that are north of Beason St. will see water main replacement in Phase III. Vandyke said that as the main is replaced, another crew will come behind and repave and restore the streets. Terry Hicks, president of the Locust Point Civic Association, said that the city would fix the sidewalks and re-line the streets, crosswalks, and bike lanes. Nirav Shah, a consultant with DPW, told Locust Point residents that the water mains currently in place are 80 to 90 years old. The old, galvanized pipes are being replaced with higher-quality, copper pipes, he said. Freshly painted Patterson Park Pagoda now reopen by Danielle Sweeney [email protected] The Patterson Park Pagoda, which has been undergoing renovations since March, reopened on Aug. 12. The renovations included repairing the three decks and a full exterior paint job in historically accurate paint colors, according to Kathy Harget, executive director of Friends of Patterson Park. “The city paid for the repairs out of its budget. It was a fast turnaround,” she says The Pagoda, originally called the Observatory, was designed by Charles H. Latrobe, then Superintendent of Parks, in 1890. From the top of the tower, a viewer can see Fort McHenry, the Patapsco River, and Self Storage & RV, Boat, Vehicle Storage All Units Ground Level Drive Right Up • No Inside Hallways the Key Bridge. “You’d be shocked at the view,” says Carol Hartke, a former board member of Friends of Patterson Park, and a Pagoda docent, or tour guide. As a docent, Hartke answers visitors’ questions and gives occasional tours, but more often she listens to visitors share their stories about the pagoda. “Many of the people who visit the pagoda today grew up in Baltimore and moved away. They have great Baltimore stories from 50-60 years ago,” Hartke says. Perhaps surprisingly, a lot of couples became engaged in the Pagoda, Hartke says. “It used to be more open to the public than it is today,” Hartke notes. “Visitors could come in pretty much whenever they want- "*0(+-.%1($%10/($% %2%,"4-.%#"/0 ! ! A Pagoda visitor who had lived in the neighborhood said that when he and his brother were kids, they would run up the pagoda steps to see if the banana boats had come in to the Inner Harbor [where the Aquarium is now], Hartke recalls. “If the banana boats were in, the boys would get excited, race down the pagoda steps, and run all the way to the Inner Harbor to see if any stray bananas had fallen on the docks. Why? So they could gather them and eat them. Now that’s a great story,” says Hartke. 1& !+( $44-( 0) (//,/*40/'(-$8('$'$8%82$,/ Largest Sports Memorabilia Store in Baltimore 7$3 )05*+4 !+( 2$,/ '(-$8(' HUGE$/' SELECTION!! 2,4,3+ 2(,/)02&(.(/4 $--07(' 4+( "(2.0/4 ,-,4,$ 40 $22,6( ,/ 4,.( (/$%-,/* 4+( .(2,&$/3 40 ,/3%. / $ 3402. &$--(' Baltimore,Md 21224 7,/ %8 '()($4,/* 470 (/(.8 ,/*(2-$34(')02'$83 www.bbcoutlet.com 410-284-7922 )02&(30/($4$4,.( ? Kaflow beat out 16 other contestants at the Five Seasons, earning a slot in a threeday tour of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. He has recently launched his own label, Real Deal Records, and a fivetrack EP, Tuff Guy. The song “Infinite (My Car),” an ode to the car Kaflow has driven between New York and Baltimore for two years, has unusual lyrics: I’m glad you not a guzzler—but it’s nothing to a hustler. Spent a couple bucks, bought you a new muffler. Then I had to buy you a transmission—a couple grand from my stash missin’. Kaflow hosts an open mike night, Soulful Floetry, every Thursday night at 8 p.m. at Tony’s Diner, 8 Park Ave. You can find him on Twitter at KaflowKaboom1. What brought you to Baltimore? My friend went to Morgan State. I went to see him; it was only three-and-a-half hours away. He took me around the city, and I thought, “I like it.” The people that I’ve met, they’ve shown me a lot of love. It’s a little different from New York, and it’s not that far away. What did you do at the Def Jam competition? I did two songs, “Infinite (My Car)” and “Tuff Guy.” You wrote a song about your car? I wrote a song about my car. On stage, I have a model girl hold a picture of my car, and I rap to the car. Me and the car have been through a lot. We’ve been in an accident. We’ve been to New York and back. A lot of dollars went into the car. But the AC works greater than my wife’s truck’s AC. It’s just special to me. EASTERN FAMILY DENTAL CENTER DENTURES AS LOW AS $799 1-Hour Whitening MICHAEL K. The name for my music style is reality. My rhymes are based on real-life situations. But I rhyme about them in a way that nobody else can do. My motto is “Concept is king.” We can all rhyme about girls. We can all rhyme about the Baltimore Guide. But only certain people can do it in a way that’s different from everybody. I understand that you have a record label, Real Deal Records? I started it a couple months ago—I’m still fresh with it. I got the paperwork done, and everything’s officially certified. Are there any special spots you like to visit in Federal Hill? There’s a restaurant called The Hill. My wife and I like to eat there a lot. I like the Ahi tuna. Both Palmer’s and Young’s jerseys have been retired. The first successful use of insulin to cure diabetes occurred in 1922. The grizzly bear became extinct in California in 1922. Wednesday, AUGUST 15, 2012 The Baltimore Guide 5 Baltimore man dies in standoff Howard County police have confirmed the identity of a man who died last Thursday after being shot during a confrontation with police officers in Columbia. Percy Holland, 32, of 586 Preston Street in Baltimore, was located at a residence in the 9000 block of Constant Course, Columbia, after holding his estranged girlfriend at gunpoint in her Baltimore home on Exeter St. hours earlier. According to the Howard County Police Department, detectives investigating the incident have learned that when officers located Holland, he began making statements that he had a gun and was going to shoot the police and himself. Although officers repeatedly directed him to show his hands, Holland refused and continued to make statements to the officers, including “You’re going to have to kill me or I’m going to kill you,” and “I have a gun, I will use it.” Family members reported that Holland had made suicidal statements earlier in the day, the police said, and when officers arrived at the house that evening, he said that the police “weren’t going to take him alive.” Howard County officers were called around 7:45 p.m. by Baltimore police officers who had information that Holland may be inside the residence in Columbia. Holland was charged in a Baltimore warrant with first- and second-degree assault, gun charges and reckless endangerment. According to the warrant, Holland broke into an ex-girlfriend’s home just after mid- night, Aug. 9, and woke her by putting a gun to her head. The warrant says he told the woman he was going to kill her. The charges state that he held the woman overnight and assaulted her. In the morning, she was able to escape and call 911. Holland fled with the couple’s 2-year-old child. Last night, police located Holland at an acquaintance’s residence in Columbia. Baltimore and Howard police officers approached the house around the front and back. They knocked on the front door and were let into the home by a resident. Officers in the back of the house were confronted outside by Holland. The exchange ensued, with Holland claiming he had a gun, threatening to shoot the officers and refusing to show his hands. As he made furtive movements toward one of the officers, the officer shot him. Holland was pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital. Investigators are awaiting an autopsy to confirm details about his injuries. It is unconfirmed at this time how many times he was shot and where he was struck. Police did not locate a gun at the scene. The 2-year-old child was not at the residence at the time of the incident and was located unharmed at the home of a relative. The officer involved is a patrol supervisor who has been with the police department for 12 years. Sgt. Justin Baker, 34, is on administrative leave during an internal affairs investigation, which is standard procedure. At Brenda’s Hair Designers Inc, boys and girls get a wide variety of cuts and styles, but they often get their inspiration from the same place. “Justin Bieber, David Beckham—it all starts in Hollywood,” says Brenda Ruley, who, as of this January, will have cut hair for 25 years at her salon at the corner of Fait St. and Ellwood Ave. “Whatever the celebs have, the kids are after.” According to Ruley, kids come into her salon from now until the end of August for their back-to-school haircuts. “We get a lot of families,” she says. Ruley cuts hair for both boys and girls in equal proportions. “Both are fun,” she says. “It’s kind of all part of the job—you’ve just got to please everyone.” For girls, according to Ruley, a large trend this year is braids—two braids that start directly in the middle of the front hairline, and wrap around the head to the back, almost like a headband around the rest of the hair. “I’m not sure where that started, but it was probably Hollywood” she says. Also popular are cuts with “side bangs,” or hair that falls or is pulled across the face asymmetrically, from one side to the other. Gone are the girls’ styles with polished, meticulously groomed hair. “More freestyle, tousled looks are in now,” says Ruley, adding that spray-on waxes, which give hair a “separated, day-old look and feel,” are now in. The hairdresser has seen a lot of girls’ hairstyles come and go. “Big hair went out with the 80s,” says Ruley. “Now it’s all flat and straight, no curls.” Boys are a little simpler than girls. “It’s all pretty much short, especially this time of year,” she says. Nevertheless, boys manage to distinguish CONTINUED ON PAGE 15 Eastwood Barber Shop FOR MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN $10.00 HAIRCUT Reg. Haircuts $11 with this ad We do ALL styles! We make house calls! One big hair cut this year is the “faux-hawk.” “It’s like a Caesar-cut, but off to the side more,” says Ruley. She also sculpts a lot of rounded flat-tops, more “softened around the edges” than the traditional favorite of police and servicemen. The traditional flat-top is, however, a staple at Tom’s Barber Shop, a little farther north at 404 S. Conkling St. “Sometimes I think we have a sign on the door that says ‘Today is flat-top day,’” jokes Charlie, a regular barber at Tom’s. “The flat-top is popular here (in Highlandtown), but not anywhere else, real- ly,” adds Brenda, another cutter at Tom’s. “Fades,” a haircut in which the short hair on the top of the head gradually fades into bare skin at the bottom of the sides and the back, are also popular at Tom’s, as are “regular haircuts.” “As long as there’s been barbers, there’s been regular haircuts,” explains Charlie. “The iPad is the wave of the future,” says Klein. The gadget is so easy to use, that even elementary schools, kindergartens, and daycare centers are using them, according to Klein. “It’s a no-brainer. You don’t need a lot of motor skills to use an iPad,” he says, adding that they have easy games, drawing programs, and storytelling apps to keep kids engaged. His own family is no exception. “My kids, at the age of 3, all had laptops,” Klein says. “They all had the iPad as soon as it came out—my youngest has been using an iPad since she could talk.” Despite his enthusiasm for technology and the fact that he makes his living through it, Klein says that parents must be vigilant. “It’s not suggested to hand a kid a laptop or iPad straight out of the box and say, ‘Here, go play with it,’” he says. “That’s asking for trouble.” Case in point, Klein once convinced a family member to supervise her daughter as closely as possible. He took on an Internet personality as a young boy and engaged the girl in conversation in a chat room. “Within 20 minutes, as her mother looked on, I had her phone number and address, and told her I was going to call her,” Klein says. As with any powerful tool, safe and effective use of technology requires that children be educated and supervised, he says. Programs are available that block questionable websites and interactions. Electronics give students advantages, with caution BY ERIK ZYGMONT [email protected] Technology and kids mix, and they mix very well. So well, in fact, that some schools are replacing textbooks with laptops. “At Chesapeake Middle School, where my son goes, there not requiring, but they are suggesting, but they are suggesting, that the kids get MacBooks,” says Ed Klein, proprietor of Klein & Sons Technology Solutions, 2801 O’Donnell St. “No books will be handed out, and everything will be done online, including tests,” he adds. MacBooks, Macbook Pros, and Macbook Airs are all in high-demand for students, as are their user-friendly cousins, iPads. “You can part it on the side of the head, and comb it straight forward or back. It’s however you wear your hair, but trimmed. And regular haircuts are always off the ears.” Although flat-tops, fades, and regular haircuts are pretty much the norm at Tom’s, there are exceptions. “Once in awhile, we get a mohawk,” says Charlie. “But that’s usually a summer thing,” adds Jean, another one of Tom’s staff. This year, Machado had been playing well for AA Bowie in 2012, hitting .266 with 11 home runs and 59 runs batted in over 402 at bats. Manny was then called up to play third base for the O’s, which is a bit different for him, considering he had played shortstop his whole minor league career save for two games this year. So far, he has handled all 11 chances error-free, and he continues to work hard at his new position. Making matters even more interesting is the first overall pick in that draft was that of the cross-town rivals, the Washington Nationals. Washington took Bryce Harper first overall, which now injects even more energy into their rivalry and respective playoff pushes. I wouldn’t necessarily expect Machado to keep that pace, but if he can manage to live up to most of the hype, we are looking at the future right now. So let’s sit back and enjoy the show! Patrick’s: Friends look for support, ideas CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “I spend most of my happy hours in this community,” Patterson told the LPCA. “(J. Patrick’s) has always been a family operation, in that grandmas, grandpas, grandsons, and granddaughters go there,” he said. “It’s a family affair.” Patterson says that he has been going there himself for 23 years, two or three times per week. “I’ve never seen a fight, and I’ve never seen an argument,” he said. “Ladies can I’ve never seen a fight, and I’ve never seen an argument. come in alone and not get hit on.” J. Patrick’s has the “same kind of atmosphere” as a true country pub in Ireland, Patterson says. “There are a lot of places with Irish names, but J. Patrick’s is the only Irish pub in town,” he said. “That’s my opinion.” Currently, Patterson and the Friends of J. Patrick’s are unsure of how to best direct their energies to keep the pub open and viable. “So far, the best way we’ve found to do that is by holding ceili,” he said. Ceili is an Irish word for a group dance. Patterson said that his group tries to get donations during ceili. But just as important, he says, is “getting people to come in and eat and drink.” Currently, J. Patrick’s has ceili dancing on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9 p.m. There is also a big Sunday Ceili the second Sunday of every month at 5 p.m. Traditional “sessions”—meetings and performances of Irish muscians—happen on Mondays at 8 p.m., Tuesdays at 9 p.m. and Thursdays at 9 p.m., for beginner, advanced, and intermediate musicians, respectively. On Tuesday’s at 8 p.m., Kelly Smit teaches “Sean Nos” dancing, and Danny Stanton teaches another form of dancing on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Patterson says that he particularly enjoys the Sean Nos dancing. “It’s an old-style, flat-foot form of dancing,” he said. ‘It’s not as high-kicking as the Riverdance kind of stuff.” He is open to suggestions on keeping J. Patrick’s going. BY MARCI YANKELOV SPECIAL TO THE BALTIMORE GUIDE 4. Don't be pushed into any house Your agent should show you homes available that meet your requirements. Don't make a decision on a house until you feel that you've seen enough to pick the best one. A good agent with knowledge of the market will be able to help you find “the house.” You don’t have to see 30 homes to find the place, and don’t be afraid if the first home is the one. A decade ago, homes were selling quickly, usually a few days after listing. In that kind of market, agents advised their clients to make an offer on the spot if they liked the house. That was good advice at the time. Today there isn't always such urgency, unless a home is drastically underpriced, and you'll know it if it is. 5. Hire a buyer’s agent Many buyers think they will get a better deal working directly with the listing agent. Remember, the listing agent is representing the seller and not you! The most important thing you can do is have someone on your side looking out for your best interests. Your own agent will critique the property based on your needs, and will point out any drawbacks. Pick an agent you feel comfortable with, and enlist the services of that agent as a buyer's broker. Ask friends and family who they have used and why they liked them. Interview several agents to find a good fit, and then sign a Buyers Agency Agreement. Then you become a client with all the rights, benefits, and privileges created by this agency relationship, and you're no longer just a shopper. in Listings Did you know that many Top homes areMarch sold Kristi Booth without a sign or newspaper ad? These "great deals" go to those people who443-690-1185 are committed to working with one agent. When an agent hears of a great buy, who do you think they are going to call? Their client, who they have a legal obligation to work hard for, or someone who just called on the phone and said "keep your eyes open?” So to get the best buy on a property, I always recommend that you hire your own agent and stick with him or her.
