As Green Building Assessment methods like BREEAM and
LEED (see further in this Guide) gain importance, knowledge
of the solar and luminous characteristics of sunscreen fabrics
becomes imperative. All figures provided in this Guide are
measured and calculated by accredited laboratories according
to the latest European standards and will tell you exactly how
efficient our fabrics are.
How to read the
Solar and luminous characteristics
EN 410 (1998): Defines how to make spectral measurements on fabrics and
how to calculate the solar transmittance (Ts) and solar reflectance (Rs) values.
The solar transmittance and reflectance values are required for the calculation
of the solar factor “g”.
g-value calculation
EN 13363-1+A1 (2007): This standard specifies the simplified method for the
calculation of the solar factor “g”.The solar factor or g-value is the total solar
energy transmittance whereas “gtot” is the solar factor of the combination
of glazing and solar protection device.
Visual and thermal comfort
EN 14501 (2005): Performance characteristics and classification of a solar
protection device or roller shutter with regard to visual and thermal comfort.
The standard defines the technical characteristics of 4 typical glazings (A,B,C,D)
for the calculation of the “gtot” value and classifies the thermal and visual comfort.

1. Search by fabric category, name or code
• Fabric category: make your choice between ‘The Screen Essentials’, ‘Greenscreen’ or ‘Black-out’
• Fabric name: e.g. Sergé, …
• Fabric code: e.g. AR03A (= NRG Basic with an openness factor of 3%)
• Colour code: e.g. 101101 (= white)
2.Search by screen performances and characteristics
Thermal performance:
If your goal is to use solar shading for blocking the heat that enters a room and to lower cooling expenditure
you should choose thermal performance as primary criterion. This criterion is based upon gtot values
(see explanation on ‘how to read the data’ on p.8-p.9) you can select thermal performances from 0-4
(0=very little effect, 4=very good effect)
Visual performance:
If your main goal is to filter the incoming daylight and prevent annoying reflections in computer screens,
choose visual performance as your primary criterion. This criterion is called glare control and is based
upon Tvdir and Tvdiff values (see p.8-p.9) you can select glare control performances from 0-4 (0=very
little effect, 4=very good effect)
Night privacy:
Maybe your intention is to still have privacy when it gets dark outside and you need to turn on the
light. The night privacy class will give you an idea of how well the fabric protects from people looking in.
Night privacy is based upon Tvdir and Tvdiff values (see p.8-p.9)
Visual contact outside
All Helioscreen solar shading fabrics (black-out excluded) allow visual contact with the outside. If this
is an important criterion for you, this class will give you the best idea of how good this view through is.
Visual contact outside is based upon Tvdir and Tvdiff values (see p.8-p.9)
Colour:
Select one or more colour
groups to find the most
suitable colour for your
project.

Capsol ®
For a better Performance in Thermal Comfort
The problem of overheating in private and public buildings has probably been there
for centuries. It is only due to the increasing use of big glazed surfaces, the rising
insulation quality of our present buildings and the higher comfort requirements, that
the problem became more and more apparent. Today, Helioscreen has proven to
be a reliable partner in the search for the most efficient solution on your way to
thermal comfort.
Moreover it is even possible to calculate the approximate energy gains you will enjoy
after installing blinds with Helioscreen fabric. For quite some years, Helioscreen has
been working with the Capsol® software, of which we have now an updated version.
The most actual fabric and climate data from locations all over the world, enable us
to produce the most accurate simulations. An elaborated report containing graphs
and calculation results, makes it possible to compare various scenarios and helps
you in making the right decision.

LightTool ®
For a better Performance in Visual Comfort
Natural daylight is of the utmost importance for a feeling of well-being for all
human beings. The intensity of the daylight and the colour of the light, which is
predominated by the seasons and the weather conditions, has a clear influence
on the motivation and the working capacity of people. Dealing with daylight in
the right way when designing a building will have a positive influence on the
psychology of the inhabitants.
Therefore Helioscreen has designed and developed an intelligent software
program, called LightTool®, which allows for making daylight simulations in an
office environment. This valuable tool will help you in choosing an appropriate
fabric and solar control system for the office environment.
In a few steps LightTool® leads you to the right choice:
2
1
Choose the geographical
location
2
Select the orientation of
the façade
3
Select the date and time
4
Select the percentage of
glazing in the façade
5
Select your shading strategy

You can make a simulation for several situations, for example:
Without solar shading
With Star 3% - 118150 - dusk
With Natte 2115 - 150116 - desert
Simulation for Santiago de Chile
Average illumination
at 1 m
Luminance ratio
screen/reflection
Without solar shading
3138 Lux
1.6 to 1
With solar shading: Star 3% - 118150
418 Lux
5.2 to 1
With solar shading: Natte 2115 - 150116
975 Lux
2.8 to 1
Visual comfort is available when:
•The contrast levels on different surfaces inside the office are mastered.
•Sufficient light is available, preferably natural daylight.
Illumination levels in between 500 and 1500 lux are ideal. In the above example the column
‘Average illumination at 1 m’ shows that Natte 2115 - 150116 is with 975 lux within the ideal
range to provide sufficient daylight.
•There are no annoying reflections in the computer screen.
The luminance ratio (in Cd/m2) of the computer screen and the daylight falling on the computer
screen should be minimum 3 to 1 or higher. In the above example the ‘Luminance ratio
screen/reflection’ shows that Star 3% - 118150 provides the best result with a ratio of 5.2 to 1.
If you would like a free LightTool® simulation (one simulation per project),
just go to www.helioscreen-lighttool.com/calculation.php and fill out the form.

Sustainable Comfort
Thermal Comfort
Helioscreen fabric, used either on the inside
or the outside of a building has a profound
effect on the inside temperature. Used on an
Climate control
outside device the fabric keeps out up to 90%
of the sun’s heat, on the inside up to 75% in
combination with reflective double glazing with
a low emissivity coating.
This means that the need for mechanical
cooling is reduced and often made
unnecessary. Energy can be saved which in
turn leads to lower CO2 emissions. With our
Capsol VI simulation program we can calculate
just how much energy could be saved using
our fabric. For an elaborated example with cost
reductions and prevented CO2 emissions, see
p. 14-15 in this Fabrics Guide.
Visual Comfort
Sufficient daylight and contact with the outside
world are of great importance for the wellbeing of people. Helioscreen fabrics let in
sufficient daylight while avoiding the negative
side effects of the sunlight such as glare.
Another benefit is that the contact with the
outside is maintained. When enough daylight
enters a room, the need for artificial light is very
much reduced. With our LightTool simulation
program we can help to find the perfect
fabric taking into account the orientation of
the building and the size of the windows. An
elaborated example can be found on p. 16-17
of our Fabrics Guide.
Air Quality
Helioscreen fabrics reduce the need for airconditioning and thus prevent the sick building
syndrome often caused by these devices.
Furthermore Greenguard certification proves
The Guide 2012-2015
19
that our fabrics for internal use are low on volatile organic compounds. They can
even be used for schools and other buildings where children reside.
Acoustic Comfort
Too much noise inside a room or an office can cause great nuisance for the people
residing or working there. Our fabrics absorb up to 25% of the surrounding noise and
hence help to create a more pleasant working and living environment. Noise from
outside the building is also reduced.
These four aspects of comfort are the core of what we want to achieve with our
product. But Helioscreen is more than that. Foremost we want to be a responsible
company.
Corporate social responsibility
Community
Helioscreen strives to treat all stakeholders correctly and with respect. We take
responsibility towards our customers by offering exceptional customer care,
superior service and impeccable quality. Every complaint is taken seriously and
we strive to keep our promises.
We also make sure our suppliers and our workforce are treated the way they should:
paying on time, respecting regulations and helping employees to find the balance
between work and family.
Towards society, our goal is to make and supply sustainable high-quality products,
improving quality of life and work.

Economy
Stimulating productivity
Thanks to Helioscreen fabrics employees can work more efficiently. There are
no annoying reflections in computer screens thanks to the high scores on glare
control and at the same time sufficient daylight is let in. Moreover temperatures
are kept at an acceptable level. This enhances the well-being of people working
inside offices and other buildings and thus stimulates productivity.
Investing in research & development
Helioscreen is committed to keep investing in research and development to
make our products as efficient, sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. Our
new fabric Carré for example has been developed to reduce cutting waste to
a minimum. Other projects we are currently working on (see also below) will
show results on a longer term. Check our website www.helioscreen.com
regularly for news in this area.
Meeting Green Building requirements
Helioscreen fabrics can help scoring for several green building directives like
BREEAM and LEED
BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s
Environmental Assessment Method) is the
world’s leading and mostwidely used environmental assessment method for buildings, first
launched in 1990 in the UK. Besides the original, regularly updated BREEAMUK, there now is BREEAM International which is adaptable to local regulations
worldwide. Meanwhile even regional and national versions have been set up
such as BREEAM-Gulf and BREEAM-NL.
In BREEAM International, buildings are rated according to the percentage
they score on the following scale: pass (≥30%), good (≥45%), very good
(≥55%), excellent (≥70%) and outstanding (≥85%).
To ensure that performance against fundamental environmental issues is not
overlooked in pursuit of a particular rating, BREEAM sets minimum standards
of performance in key areas e.g. energy, water, waste etc.
One of those key areas is Visual Comfort. Here Helioscreen solar shading can
definitely come into play. The issue is split into five parts and two of them are
key to our business: daylighting (1-2 credits) and glare control and view out
(1-2 credits).
Helioscreen fabrics will also contribute to Thermal comfort (2 credits). This
can be demonstrated with our simulation program Capsol VI. Moreover we
can provide all necessary data (measured according to EN410 (1998)) to make
a more thorough simulation (thermal modeling). In this view our screen can
also help reducing the CO2-emissions of the building (15 credits) as they help
relieving the air conditioning load.
BREEAM is a very complex assessment method and we advise everyone
involved in the design of a building to study the requirements thoroughly in
order to score as high as possible. Where solar shading is concerned, please
do not hesitate to rely on the expertise of Helioscreen to help you along.
The Guide 2012-2015

LEED
LEED is the North American equivalent of BREEAM and stands for Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a rating system developed by the
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
The 2009 LEED rating system has 100 base points and 10 bonus points. Scoring
40 to 49 points gets a building LEED certified, but you can also win silver (50 to
59 points), gold (60 to 79 points) or platinum (80 points and more). A recent LEED
Gold project where Helioscreen supplied the sunscreen fabric is Medienbrücke in
Munich.
These are the topics you will score for using Helioscreen fabrics:

Besides BREEAM and LEED there are various national standards, such as HQE in France
(Haute Qualité Environnemental), DGNB in Germany, CASBEE in Japan and Green Star
in Australia.
Environment
Helioscreen fabrics: 100% recyclable
Fabrics made from fiberglass yarns coated with PVC have
clear advantages over fabrics made from other materials.
One of these is durability: fiberglass-PVC fabrics last longer
than most other fabrics and are more resistant to harsh
weather conditions. As a result, they have the advantage of
remaining in use for a long period before they enter into the
waste chain. Life expectation used in life cycle analysis is up
to 15 years outside and 30 years inside.
At this moment there is no affordable alternative for fiberglass-PVC that has
the same advantages and properties for solar shading. But we know that the
Fiberglass-PVC yarns we use are as eco-friendly as possible. This is proved
by their compliance with the Oëkotex standard 100. This means there are no
harmful substances present nor heavy-metal content (lead, cadmium, tin).
No formaldehyde and allergenic compounds are used and the yarns are resistant
to mould and bacterial growth. The fabric also complies to the latest REACHstandards prescribed by the EU (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and
restriction of CHemicals).
To further ease the concerns about the PVC-content of our fabrics, Helioscreen
supports VinylPlus, an initiative of the European PVC industry that sets challenging
sustainability targets.
Climate Control
22
In light of that commitment, Helioscreen participates in several
projects that seek to recycle both the glass and the PVC content
of the yarn used for the fabrics. Thorough research proved that
glass and PVC can be separated using a centrifugation technique
and tests on a more industrial scale look very promising. After
separation, glass and PVC can be recycled separately. If these
projects turn out to be successful, Helioscreen has the will to
implement a collection program for post-consumer waste at the
end of their life cycle.
Aside this, Helioscreen is constantly looking for alternatives to
recycle production waste and fabrics at their end-of-life stage.
The fabrics can be shredded for example and used in acoustic
insulation. Because our fabrics do not leach they can be used
in ground stabilization as a replacement for natural stones in
aggregates.
Other solutions have already been employed, such as:
• Re-use of second-quality fabrics into sampling, mock-ups
for demonstration and within our confection department.
• Re-use of second-quality fabrics into eco-design products :
bags and accessories, small furniture, promotional goodies.
• Re-use of second-quality fabrics for inside and outside
green walls, garden carpets...
Environmental management systems
Helioscreen is engaged into a waste management program
and active waste reduction. We are setting up an environmental
management system in order to gain ISO 14001 certification,
aside our ISO 9001 certification.
Waste management
Our industrial waste is separated. Plastic wrap and wooden
crates are reused, cardboard boxes are 100% recycled.
For direct transport by truck we do not use any cardboard
esitrepxe
packaging in order to further reduce our industrial waste.
To meet the regulations, our remaining industrial screen wastes
are currently still sent to landfill, but as land filling is an undesirable
waste treatment option we have invested in quality controls to
dramatically reduce our industrial screen waste impact on the
environment. This high quality concern results in less volume of
waste for our customers, the blind-makers and fabricators.

Printing on screen:
Thinking out of the box
So far screen fabrics were designed to be functional. While
keeping this functional aspect, fiberglass screen fabrics with
printed designs are unique and have a high added value for
new businesses, especially projects.
Helioscreen is the first to develop a wide range of unique and
exclusive designs on a fiberglass screen range, available off
the shelf.
Digital printing, a fully sustainable process
Digital printing refers to the method of printing from a digital based image directly to a variety of media.
The main difference between digital printing and traditional methods is that no printing plates are used.
This results in a quicker and less expensive turnaround time.
The printing method is - both environmentally and technically – a sustainable process. The exclusive
Helioscreen prints are made by the greenest printers on the market. No special preliminary treatment
of the fabric is required, and printing can easily be done for inside and outside applications. All designs
are printable on almost any type of the Helioscreen fibreglass fabric range. There is no special treatment
required afterwards and the inline fixation is done at low temperature.
Digital print applications reduce the impact on the environment because non-toxic, low-smell inks are
used. VOC-levels (volatile organic compound levels) of both fabric and print, are extremely low. Because
the inks are fire retardant and non-combustible the printing process is performed in a safe working
environment.
The only limit is your imagination
Think out of the box and use your imagination. Whether you propose these printed designs on
rollerblinds, tensile structures or even as a decoration or communication tool, many other options or
applications are possible. All designs are exclusive and to help you out, Helioscreen has selected a
limited range of designs. This standard range of designs is available “off the shelf” on a selected range of
Panama 5% fiberglass fabrics. For a small additional cost the non-standard range can be applied on the
fiberglass fabric of your choice. Made to measure or roll to roll, share your thoughts with us and create
your own range. We will be glad to explore what never has been done and think “out of the box” together
with you. The only limit is your imagination.
For further information about print on screen please ask for our Out of the box collection book.

Helioscreen has a clear mission: to make and supply high-quality products
that improve quality of life and work. We accomplish this through ongoing
research and product development, always bearing in mind that the service
we give to the customer is of the utmost importance.
The Quality Chain
But the quality of the weaving process for Screen fabric is only one link in the Quality
Chain: later on, the fabric will have to be cut to size, welded, finished and assembled
into a roller blind and put onto a window. The quality of the end-product - the installed
blind - will be judged by the end-user only, and every link in the manufacturing and
assembly chain will have to be perfectly controlled to make sure that the quality in one
stage of the manufacturing process does not get lost somewhere else.
The weaving of glass yarns remains a complex and difficult task, but with the help of
the latest developments in the beaming and weaving processes it has been perfected.
The customer should be aware, however, of a few areas that deserve attention:
Colour variations
Compared to the sample card, from one batch of yarn to another, minor and
carefully controlled colour variations may occur.
Storage of the rolls
Store the rolls in such a way that no excessive weight rests on the fabric. While the
fabric is sturdy and strong, glass does not like to be compressed and the fabric may
be deformed if it is put under continuous local high pressure. Never store the rolls
vertically. Put them by preference in separate cardboard tubes.
Cover manufacturing
Always make sure the covers are cut at perfectly right angles. Use razor sharp
blades or crush-cut knives in order to avoid splitting the glass core.
Stitching is not recommended, it is better to weld the fabric, either with a highfrequency or a thermal welding machine, especially designed for this job.
Maximum dimensions
There are certain limits to the size of a single sunblind, depending upon the diameter
and material of the roller tube, the type of mechanism and the size of the headbox.
These are limits beyond which the blind will simply not perform properly and the
screen cover will not behave as it should. Helioscreen offers free information on the
use of its fabrics and the maximum dimensions of single blinds.
Call or e-mail us if you have any questions or if you are in doubt.
Thank you for choosing Helioscreen.
