anD more beautiful?
T
here’s an abundance of
products we can put on
our skin that claim to
make us look younger.
Anti-ageing, lifting, firming, deeppenetrating, restoring; the list of
ailments creams and serums aim
to treat are endless. According to
London-based market intelligence
firm Euromonitor, the UK skincare
market is predicted to be worth
£2.2 billion by 2017 and as it
currently stands, the skincare

market in the UK is dominated by
the ‘facial care’ category, which
constitutes 76% of the value.
But what if there was a simpler
way to look younger and more
beautiful, all in just one product?
“What we eat and drink is vital
for beautiful, glowing skin.” says
Carly Hobbs, professional make-up
artist and lifestyle writer, “You can
use the best skincare products and
the best make-up, but if you’re not
putting the right things inside, it still
shows.» Drinking has never been
more fashionable; collagen shots full
of micronutrients and fresh juices
brimming with curly kale and goji
berries are all the rage, claiming
to work wonders for the skin. With
a juice bar popping up on every
corner and collagen drinks being
dubbed the new ‘have to’ skincare
product, the question is: can we
really drink our beauty back?

COLLAGEN DRINKS

collagen drinks must be consumed
every day, continuously, in order to
maintain the results. Once you do stop,
your skin will gradually start to revert
back.
in your own time, and are great to use

Consumers are said to see a visible

proto-col
Collagen drinks boast to reduce
wrinkles, plump-up skin and make
you look visibly younger. They’re
popular with celebrities such as Millie
Mackintosh, Anthea Turner and Arlene
Phillips, but many practitioners are still
sceptical.
‘Better skin from within’ is the slogan
wrapped around popular collagen
shot Skinade. Endorsed by celebrities
and recommended by aesthetic
and cosmetic practitioners, Skinade
promises to improve the way your skin
looks and feels in as little as 30 days.
The peach and mangosteen flavoured
anti-ageing collagen drink says it works
by delivering essential micronutrients
that help to re-build the collagen matrix
in your skin. These micronutrients vitamin B, C , l-lysine, MSM and omegas
3 and 6 – are absorbed by the body 20
times more than supplement pills, due
to the low molecular weight of the highgrade collagen.
Kate Kerr, a leader in bespoke advanced
clinical facials and skin treatments,
based in Harley Street, was sceptical of
collagen drinks, but after seeing some
‘impressive’ before and after photos,
she changed her mind, “I did a little
research into this new ‘craze’ and I
have been very impressed with what
I’ve seen. I thought the increase in skin
thickness and texture had been down
to increased hydration (due to the
inclusion of other active ingredients),
but after my research, I realised that the
Gold Collagen
British skincare brand ‘proto-col’ is a
favourite among many and has been
producing skincare and cosmetics for
ten years. Fronted by British soap star
Gemma Merna, the company recently
launched ‘Collagen Shot’, a drink to
visibly reduce wrinkles and increase
skin elasticity.
A favourite of Anthea Turner, Gold
Collagen liquid beauty supplement is
formulated with the highest quality
hydrolysed marine collagen. It is made
up of small peptides containing short
chains of amino acids, which are easily
absorbed and distributed by the blood
stream throughout the whole body and
skin.
Collagen Shot uses 5000mg of
VERISOL Bioactive collagen peptide
– the closest match to human DNA.
The daily food supplement delivers a
combination of VERISOL type I and III
bovine collagen hydrolysate, vitamins
B6, C & E, zinc, biotin and copper. It
also aims to support the body’s own
collagen formation.
Gold Collagen has had extensive
testing, in order to prove its
efficiency. An independent clinical
research organisation carried out
a double-blind, placebo-controlled
clinical trial of the product. Out of 1,500
women aged between 35 to 55 who
drank it daily, two-thirds reported up to
a 35% reduction in lines and wrinkles.
Kerr explains how these peptides help,
“They mimic the peptides within the
wound healing process, leading to
the stimulation of fibroblasts and the
production of collagen. This natural
process is normally stimulated by
trauma and inflammation, which is what
we in the industry utilise to kick-start
the collagen building process by way
of micro-needling, skin peels, lasers etc.
The collagen drinks will not provide
the same results as these professional
treatments but they are an attractive
option, as they can be taken at home,
Dr Martin Godfrey, head of research at
Minerva Research Labs, who created
Gold Collagen, says of the product,
“Hydrolysed collagen activates
fibroblasts in the skin and joints
stimulating them to form new collagen,
elastin and moisture-retaining hyaluronic
acid molecules. These improve the
structure and function of skin and
joints helping the skin appear more
youthful and the joints work optimally.
Unlike other brands Gold Collagen
has scientific clinical trials behind it to
support the evidence of its benefits.”

JUICING
Let’s Juice
Mix the right fruit, veg and herbs and
you’ve got a powerful cocktail of
nutrients in just one drink! We know
certain fruits and veggies are full of
antioxidants, which boosts our health
by fighting free radicals, but is it as
powerful in juice form?
Radiance Cleanse
The creators of juice cleaners Let’s
Juice, claim to make the most
nutritionally complete juice possible
and their premium cold press makes
juice that contains more essential
vitamins, minerals and enzymes than
juice made by any other way.
Founded by two best friends in 2009,
Christina Agnew and Clare Neill aimed
to ‘pioneer the UK’s first high quality,
nutritional and organic juice cleanse
programme’. They believe that with
the right ingredients, raw, organic and
unpasteurised, cold-pressed juices
could have huge benefits for health.
“It’s what’s on the inside that counts
– and never more so than when it
comes to skin.” says Olivia Cartwright,
spokesperson for Radiance Cleanse Co,
“Juices are a great way to consume
lots of different vegetables - of a
quantity and variety that you simply
wouldn’t eat. These often include super
healthy dark leafy green vegetables
(such as spinach and kale).
Cartwright continues, “Consuming a
freshly-made green juice will hydrate
and nourish your skin from within.
We only use organic produce for
maximum nutrient content, and certain
ingredients are great to pin point skin
health. Cucumber contains silica, which
helps build healthy connective tissue.
Parsley, broccoli and kale are rich in
anti oxidant vitamins C and A, needed
to protect skin cells.”

They use a ‘cold press’ so there is no
heat created in the process, which
ensures retention of all the plant
nutrition.
They even have a juice called
‘Forever Young’, which includes
ingredients: guava, green apple and mint.
With juicing, you don’t get the fibre
you would in the whole foods, and the
mixing of lots of ingredients can lead to
a high-calorie intake, so juices must be
part of a healthy diet.
You’d have to have been living in a
cave to have not heard of the Juice
Master, Jason Vale. Vale claims that
through juicing he eradicated junk
food, cigarettes and alcohol from
his diet and is now free of his skin
conditions and hay fever – impressive
claims. Popular with celebrities across
the globe, Vale has sold over 500,000
copies of his juice recipe books
that promote the health benefits of
drinking the juices.
Vale has a specific recipe for beautiful
clear skin, as Michaela Rowland,
marketing assistant for Juice Master
explains, “Having suffered from severe
psoriasis and eczema, Jason Vale
worked at clearing himself of both
conditions completely – simply through
diet change and incorporating juicing
into his daily life. Jason worked on
creating recipes that would not only
improve the skin due to the level of
nutrients involved; he also ensured
the concoctions tasted delicious, to
ensure enjoyment of the overall juice
or smoothie which the body will also
love.”
Rowland continues, “The Clear Skin
Smoothie ingredients are: two apples,
a slice of pineapple, chunk of ginger,
third of a lemon, quarter of a medium
sized cucumber, one half of a ripe
avocado, a tablespoon of mixed seeds
and lecithin granules. The lemon is
packed with vitamin C, which contain
antioxidants, and avocados contain a
great source of vitamin E that can help
reduce damage from oxidising fats in
the skin cells to prevent aging skin.”

Bottom’s up!
If there’s one thing we do know, a
healthy, balanced diet will help us
retain our youthfulness. As to which
drink will help the most, is not 100%
clear, and it may vary from person to
person. “Nobody should be using the
same skincare products.” says Hobbs.
“Everyone’s skin is individual; so it’s
about what works for you.”
Drinking more of what is good for you
certainly won’t harm you – so why not
give it a go? After all, it’s your level of
care and commitment for your skin that
will most likely predict how fast or slow
your skin will age.
