It was immediately evident from customer response that we had much to offer the market with our unique designs and high quality weaving. In 2007 we invested in our own purpose built factory on the island of Cebu in the Philippines, in order to directly manage the production and delivery of our own quality furniture. Since that time, the demand for weave furniture has increased considerably and San Marino & Madison Lounge Hyacinth we have subsequently moved to larger factory premises to accommodate the greater demand. The San Marino & Madison Lounge range is woven in a traditional basket style weave using 3mm Red Pine Rose Fibres. It has a rope trim around the edges. Comes with a 10 year warranty. The Hyacinth range is woven in a traditional basket style weave using twisted Satinwood Rose Fibres. Comes with a 10 year warranty. Seven years on from our initial foray into outdoor weave furniture, we now have six impressive ranges of modern and traditional furniture that caters for all styles, environments and weather conditions. Our in-house aluminium framing department skilfully fabricate and weld the intricate carcasses that are then powder coated in colours to match the Rose Fibre before weaving commences. As you scroll through the catalogue you will see the wonderful variety and choice of the Rose Fibre weave, all carried out by our experienced craftsman who have learnt the weaving skills passed on by previous generations. Ocean Monte Carlo Grey The Ocean range is woven in a unique ‘V’ and open weave pattern. Using 7mm & 12mm flat triple tone bronze Rose Fibres. Comes with a 10 year warranty. Havana The Monte Carlo Grey range is woven in traditional basket style, in a 3mm textured grey round synthetic weave. Comes with a 3 year warranty. recyclable, and all wastage is reused to make small components on many of our products. We have also introduced an apprenticeship scheme within the factory, giving our local workers the opportunity to learn the many trades used to produce woven furniture. This is our way of recognising and valuing the contribution of the local community for producing what we believe to be amongst the most beautiful woven furniture in the world today. Hi-Rise Garden The Hi-Rise Garden is woven in a traditional basket style weave using 40mm Red Pine Rose Fibres with 12mm wide bronze trellasing. Comes with a 10 year warranty. The Havana range is woven in a light khaki coloured 7mm flat weave Rose Fibre. Comes with a 10 year warranty. Cabana HEX Lounge The Cabana is woven in a open weave pattern using 7mm Mocca Rose Fibres. Comes with a 10 year warranty. 4 At our factory we implement best practice environmental policies; the synthetic weave and aluminium raw materials are 100% The HEX Lounge is woven in 7mm grey and white Rose Fibre in a Harlequin pattern. Comes with a 10 year warranty. 5 Ye 10 ty arran ar W Hyacinth Collection The Hyacinth collection takes its name from the Water Hyacinth and offers suberb style and quality. Our Hyacinth furniture is woven in a traditional basket style weave using twisted Satinwood Rose Fibres, onto powder coated aluminium frames. Each piece has a rope effect trim using 3mm red pine Rose Fibre, making the furniture smooth to touch whilst retaining its natural rattan feel. All Hyacinth cushions come in an Oatmeal colour fabric. Twenty one years on, and with hundreds of innovative furniture products in use all over the world, it has been a privilege to work in this fascinating industry. We are challenged daily by the materials we work with, shifting market 2004 Belfry Picnic Table 2008 2011 conditions and fashion trends. Through these challenging and often turbulent times, Alexander Rose has continued to develop exciting, appealing and functional furniture for domestic and contract markets. Our first major design innovation was the introduction of the ergonomically curved back slat in the Broadfield Bench. Wave Swing Seat At this time, common garden benches were made with straight slats and therefore were not very comfortable. The Broadfield has since gone on to become the company’s best-selling product. Chaise Lounge We then decided the company needed a range for the European market so that was really the start of working closely with outside recognised furniture designers. The company’s first ‘Designer Collection’ was the Avant range, conceived by the Danish designer, Jesper Møller Hansen, and has gone on to become a design classic. 2012 Tivoli Armchair Following the success of these new products, we then created an in- house design department and appointed the respected British furniture designer, Alan Morley, who this year celebrates ten years with Alexander Rose. Our design ethos has always been to work with passionate and enthusiastic designers, and no-one better sums this up than Alan. 2012 Ocean Lantern I am delighted to showcase some of our latest innovations through design collaborations with Diarmuid Gavin, celebrated international Garden Designer and Chelsea Flower Show Gold Winner, and the Ciani Design Studio in Italy, led by furniture designers Paolo and Edi Ciani. We are also very proud to include the work of Matt Thompson, our 2013 2014 82 Hyacinth Wing Chair student competition winner. Matt recently graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in BSc Product Design. Hi-Rise Garden 83 Alan Morley Alan started his career as an apprentice cabinet maker and furniture draughtsman in Brighton, England, before developing his own contemporary furniture design and manufacturing business in 1983. The company became best known for its classic modern interpretation of the famous “Deck Chair”, which was first sold through Ron Arad’s famous Covent Garden outlet “One Off” and later converted into Stainless Steel for the Alexander Rose Avant Collection. Alan has also undertaken various industrial design projects, designing exhilarating waterslides for theme parks and swimming pool complexes for the leisure industry, working in collaboration with main contractors, architects and structural engineers. In 2004, Alan took up the position of in-house Furniture Designer at Alexander Rose, and has developed many collections of innovative furniture that maintain the company’s position at the forefront of their industry. Matt Thompson Matt Thompson was born in Ipswich, Suffolk in 1990 and this year graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in BSc Product Design at the University of Derby. The Product Design course offered at the University of Derby provided him with a way to translate this passion into what he hopes will be a challenging and rewarding career. He was nominated Gold Winner of the Alexander Rose Student Design Competition with his design of the Madison Chair which has been put into production by Alexander Rose. Matt entered the Student Competition for the opportunity to work with established design professionals. He gained valuable experience of the furniture design industry from working on the project; “it is a rare opportunity for an undergraduate student to be so heavily involved in the creation of their own design, from conception to completion. “ As Head of Design with Alexander Rose and to mark 10 years with the company, Alan wanted to design something conceptually different and special; the outcome is the Hi-Rise Garden. Working alongside Alan Morley, Head of Design at Alexander Rose, Matt was able to develop his concept design first hand and participate in the different manufacturing processes involved. This experience has enabled him to better understand the industry and see the Madison Lounge develop into an exciting new range of furniture. Diarmuid Gavin “My trip to the Alexander Rose Philippines factory to witness the construction of the prototype was particularly insightful, especially to see the design come to life, as well as having the opportunity to experience a new country on the other side of the world.” Edi & Paolo Ciani My long time aim has been to create a luxurious poolside, beachside or patio structure, for shelter and privacy which reflects the mystery and elegance of a Moroccan lantern. Being introduced to the craftspeople of Alexander Rose helped me to achieve exactly that. The secret was to gain an understanding of the hand-weaving process, to observe the repeated patterns created when traditional skills and contemporary materials are merge. 84 The Ciani brothers are internationally recognised as two of Italy’s leading Product and Interior Designers. Their design studio is based in Udine and for the last 25 years undertaken a wide range of design projects for leading companies, developing furniture and products for domestic, contract and outdoor environments. The intricate hand weaving of the structure is topped with a beautiful dome, has circular side openings and is cushioned for comfort. It also has curtains that provide privacy when required. The internal space is adaptable, accommodating either two day beds or seating around a circular table. Edi Ciani graduated with a Diploma in Technical Design for Furniture and Furnishings. In 1987 he began working as a Furnishing Designer and in 1992 he founded the Edi and Paolo Ciani Design Company. The Cabana is planned to add a dash of Eastern elegance to any situation, whether sitting alone in a sunny courtyard garden or lined up as one of a series of private retreats alongside a shimmering pool or the azure waters of the sea’. Paolo Ciani also has a Diploma in Technical Design for Furniture and Furnishings and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design from the University of Architecture FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York. 85 Jesper Møller Hansen Dick Bjork Jesper Møller Hansen graduated as a Product and Furniture designer from the Royal Danish School of Fine Arts, School of Design, Copenhagen in 1991 and through the years many of his designs have been exhibited around the world with several of them winning awards. Dick Björk is a highly respected furniture designer from Sweden, and has been commissioned by manufacturers and companies around the world for his innovative and modernist approach to design. The Avant Garden Furniture series which Jesper designed for Alexander Rose was launched in 2003 and won the best Garden Furniture series. Fifteen years on this stainless steel collection is still extremely popular and recognised throughout the outdoor furniture industry as a design classic. Good design is not to be taken for granted: Jesper Møller Hansen Design Studio works with the latest technology,innovation and creativity, in order to achieve a unique mode of expression and harmony in the designs; a perfect balance between the soft and hard lines often creates a unique and harmonious shape. “If you choose to work with natural materials you also have the responsibility to do your best”. Dick was born in Helsingborg in the southern part ofSweden in 1956. His father was a retailer who owned his own furniture store and he recalls how, as a child, he went with him on buying trips to Furniture Fairs. The experience of buying, assembling and displaying the furniture, never left him. As Dick says ‘When you are just a little kid, all this stuff is thrilling!’ After formal training as a cabinet maker and wood technician, Dick went on to study metal production in order to increase his knowledge of materials and their applications to design. During the In the 1990s he was approached to design a range of furniture lines for a selection of Swedish producers. These commissions significantly launched his career on the national and international stage. Since 2012 Dick has been collaborating with Alexander Rose designing elegant pieces of modern furniture within the Roble collection. Povl Eskildsen Future Designer 2016 Povl Eskildsen was born and still lives in Denmark. He grew up during the hay days of Danish Furniture Design and has on that basis, a Master Degree from the Danish Architect School of Furniture. He then opened up own studio in the same year, and has worked for 25 years as a free-lance designer for companies all over the world. Povl is one of the most experienced designers and has been very influential of the evolvement of modern outdoor furniture, with some of his designs now having an archetypal status, with many of these being recognised with Awards over the years. Rose fibres are UV and fully weather resistant, and also insensitive to differences in temperature. The Rose fibre is produced for Alexander Rose by Viro, and are tested rigorously to ensure they meet with our exacting standards. The structure of all our woven furniture is made from fully welded, powder-coated aluminium frames. The aluminium tubes we use have a wall thickness of 1.5 mm to provide maximum strength and a lightweight frame. Once a frame has been covered in its woven skin the furniture becomes even stronger. The aluminium frames are electrostatically powder coated to prevent them from oxidisation, the finish is invisible once it has been woven over. Our weavers are highly skilled, often 2nd and 3rd generation weavers. They use their traditional experience with natural materials and apply their skills to using the modern man-made wickers. Weave Maintenance We recommend that woven furniture is cleaned at least once a year, it is important to use a non-foaming cleaner on woven furniture, as a foaming product will Quality Garden Furniture leave residues in the gaps in between the weave which will then attract dirt.
