Plus one! From the room next to the Oval Office. Hello! Yes I’m still here! There were no contenders for an editor at the AGM and I will care- take the next two newsletters to December issue. This should get the holiday season publicised and give more than enough time for a member to give serious thought to picking up the reigns of this position. You’ll come to really enjoy it! Well, the November edition traditionally airs the AGM content: This year carries on that tradition. But you will also see a couple of features that are different! See if you can pick ‘em out. No; - it has to be mentioned: Check out the new discount offer with Resene paints. This has just become available. And lust after the Schnitzer treatment of the K1200R. Nothing Noddy about this bike! And John has sent something too, to ponder about. Leader of the pack, Dave & Cheryl Some people are like wheelbarrows: they stand still unless someone pushes them. Colour: Pearl White Mileage: 303,416 km Registration: 80SJN Accessories: BMW touring panniers, air horns, heated handgrips Owners: 4, excluding dealers Price: Offers around $3000 History I bought this bike from Motorad in Wellington17 March 1993 when she had 41,000 km on the odo. I used her regularly for commuting, initially from Pukerua Bay to Wellington from 1993 until February 1997, and then from Waikanae to Wellington until late 2003. The trips involved 35 km each way initially, and 65 km each way in the later stage, so she always got up to full operating temperature. There were also (rare!) weekend trips of 1,200 km or so. Maintenance and repairs The bike has been maintained exclusively by Mike Dodson of Motorad in Wellington, and the maintenance history is available for inspection. Apart from tyres at regular intervals (about 24,600 for the front and 29,200 for the rear, using Continental touring), the engine had rings, valves and beaing shells about 180,000 km, and a gearbox rebuild at 278,000 km. The gearbox bearings were all replaced, but the gears were in excellent condition, with the engagement dogs still clean and square. The mainshaft was modified to include a circlip groove to retain the main bearing. The battery was last replaced December 2004, and despite irregular use over the last year still performs well and has not required additional charging. Appearance As can be expected of a bike of this mileage, she shows some battle scars from general wear and tear, especially stone chips to the fairing, but is still quite tidy to look at, apart from the exhaust headers that are showing their age. She does not show any signs of smoking, and oil consumption has remained steady since the engine rebuild at about 15ml/100 km, which compares well with the maximum in the handbook of 100ml/100 km. Note the term used is “interested in”; as you do not have to currently own a BMW motorcycle in order to join the Register. It is possible to join as an Associate member, subject to being nominated by two financial members. Past full members who no longer own a BMW motorcycle but who retain an interest in the BMW marque, may become Associate members and do not require nomination. If you were previously a member, your membership number has been held for you and you may rejoin as of right. Experience shows that many who sell their BMW, come back to the marque eventually or retain a lasting interest. Your previous period of membership remains active and is added onto any later membership years for your ten year pin. It should be mentioned that participating partners are also classed as financial members and have full rights. They pay an annual fee set at 10% of the annual subscription. ORGANISATION and ACTIVITIES Members of the Executive can be resident in any part of New Zealand. Area Representatives are responsible for organizing and co-coordinating runs, informal meetings and social occasions. Your local BMW dealer will be able to put you in touch with the Area Rep closest to you. Otherwise write to the Register at P O Box 109-245, Newmarket, Auckland. A monthly meeting is held in Auckland on the second Monday of each month, usually at the Vintage Car Club Rooms, 39 Fairfax Avenue, Penrose, Auckland, at 8 pm. Runs and activities are organized in most centers each month (sometimes two or more) and in addition there is an Annual Rally early in January (alternating in the South and North Islands); the North Island RAG Rally in March; and the AGM at the beginning of October. NEWSLETTER One of the benefits of membership is receiving our monthly newsletter. It is noted for being informative and entertaining, which is largely due to the high quality of articles submitted by members. REGALIA Clothing and badges with the Register insignia are available to members. Order forms may be obtained from the Regalia Officer. Also see the website for pictures and ordering information. INSURANCE An insurance scheme is available through the Register for members who are 30 years of age or over. Your local BMW dealer will be able to arrange for your membership, should you wish to join the Register for this reason. Another person with a one-track mind is the road hog.”A road hog is entitled to half the road, and he always takes it right out of the middle.” A road hog is a motorist who thinks he owns the highway simply because his taxes helped pay for it. A road hog should be put in the pen like other hogs. A car brings out the beast in some men, usually the road hog. In fashionable society, nobody arrives until everybody else has. !! BMW Owners Register Newsletter 7 November 2006 READER CONTRIBUTIONS The AGM: The Dark Side. The ride to the AGM on Saturday was very pleasant. The stop off at Flat Hills allowed the Wellingtonians to refuel their personal engines and to warm up. It was not raining, but it was cool. The ride to Taihape for machine fuel was a well paced and spaced event, and that space and pace was sustained all the way to Taupo. The Desert Rd was open, and the snow on the roadside was testimony to the weather events of the previous few days. Where previously there would have been grit laid on the tricky sections, now there is a white chemical that looks as if milk has been poured on the road. It is a lot safer than the fine grit that has been known to catch the unwary. Then there was the AGM. It finished later than expected. I rang Heather just after 19.00 hours to say we were late finishing, then mumbled something about keeping the electric BMW Owners Register Newsletter with a civil servant “just doing his duty”. With the advantage of a full moon to see vehicles parked on the roadside, I let guilty feeling wash over me again and maintained the correct pace (for a BMW). By now the horizon ahead was definitely looking sombre, so that by the time I was at National Park, it was pretty dark out there. It was also becoming apparent that the full moon had melted the cloud cover as my visor was developing transparent measles. Time to turn left, past the sign for Wanganui (123 k) and to tuck in behind an Elast0drive 4X4. It had a big rubber band inside it, and when the passenger wound up the big rubber band, the vehicle would shoot off like a startled rabbit. Then as the rubber band unwound it would slow down. The passenger would rewind the rubber band and off it would go again. Enough is enough of that. Unfortunately each time the rubber band was would down, the road was either all curves or the blanket switched on and zipped up my jacket. The ride around the lake edge is always pleasant, with only a brief moment of sun-strike. The traffic was light, and the sky was making noises about twilight. Petrol and a quick snack at the Shell in Turangi saw the bike on the road again at about 19.45. There was still a visible horizon and enough light to make normal road speed a real possibility. Lake Rotoaira was gem set in a patch of native bush. It was clear enough to see the fish jumping, had they been doing that. Near the Rangipo turnoff, the horizon was still visible all around, and that seemed a bit strange. It should be getting dark. On a down hill curve I glanced into the mirror and saw the most magnificent full moon in all its buttery yellow beauty. It was over my left shoulder. I had the urge to turn around and ride towards it. But it was time to press on. I was nearing that point, about 2 years ago, that I had a conversation XXXKCJOTVSBODFDPN 8 November 2006 traffic coming the other way got in the way of a crafty passing manoeuvre. It turned off towards Ohakune. I was not disappointed. Had I needed petrol at National Park, I was in for a long wait till the next morning. Ditto for Raetihi. But no worries..... The decision to use the Parapara route was not taken lightly. The road works have resulted in some papa cow pats being sprinkled over the seal. In the dry these are no problem. In the wet they become grease spots so with the clouds looking like melting even faster than before, I had to decide. The decision was easy really ...I fixed “take it easy” into the computer and set sail. Then it all dried up. Dry road. Dry visor. Dry eye. This had to be good. The horizon was no longer visible other than as a faint darkness against a darkened sky. The road is a series of bends joined by almost straight, short sections. The headlight (R1150RT) of an over/under arrangement for dip and full. The full beam projector is a great weapon against the forces of darkness in a straight line. The dip beam pulls the length back in favour of width. Unfortunately one side of the flat beam shortens considerably when the bike is tipped into a corner. There is not a lot of information about the possum/sheep/ weasel/pothole/cow/horse to bother the senses. This is not a “putting patella purposefully on Parapara pavement” style of riding either. So I used the fog lights to fill in some of the deficiency. There is room for further work here. You have to believe this. The traffic light in the Parapara road was on red. Yes. Traffic light.!! Yes!! . Red!!. The only consolations were that it was not red for long and that no one leapt out of the bushes and offered to clean my windscreen for a gold coin. The last winding section of Parapara is a trap for the weary. The corners are tight and the road-works are plentiful. The remaining clouds then went into serious meltdown. I was able to see the glow of my white knuckles in the wet shiny patches of tar that had surfaced last summer. The sheepskin seat cover would have protested loudly if it could speak. The roadside reflective chevrons are plentiful in these parts of the road, but it would have been nice if someone could invent the equivalent of a “dipped beam” effect, especially when the visor is wet. 21.20 hours and the exciting Parparas were all but over, and the flat Paraparas were all that was left to enjoy ... as the rain came down. Then, as I arrived at the edge of Wanganui, it stopped again. I filled the bike with petrol on the way past the Dublin St Shell station, and made my way quietly home. Heather heard the bike arriving, so as I came to halt the garage door was winding its way up. It was just after 22.00 hours That was a 488 kilometre day out. The weather was kind enough. The company on the day was of the usual high calibre. The AGM was over for another year for me. So as I snuggled into a warm bed, and turned off the electric blanket I thought about all those people in Taupo having a great time too. Lance 1550 BMW OWNERS REGISTER GOVERNANCE At the last AGM it became obvious to me that club members expect quite a lot from their executive. As it currently stands in the rules, the club is run by the honorary officers plus a committee of minimum 20 members (those present at the Auckland monthly meetings). Most organisations I have been involved in have a group of executive plus a small number of committee members who assist in the decision making and policy formulation. Do you think this has some merit? Secondly, our current rules state that the executive are elected for one year and may be re-elected for one consecutive term only. This does not give the organisation the continuity it needs. Should we have a president-elect so that this person won’t be too intimidated taking on the job of president after one year? Should we rotate the standing down of president, secretary, treasurer, editor? Why is the membership secretary position a fixed one? Perhaps some of the ‘old hands’ can give some feedback on this. Lastly, if we had a ‘management committee’ there should be no reason the executive committee could not be in any of the larger centres, eg Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga or Hawke’s Bay (no, this is not a take-over!!). All we need to fix is the postal box number. I prefer writing bike riding stories but sometimes we need to take a look as to what suits our wonderful Register best. John Wuts October 2006 BMWOR ANNUAL RALLY 2007 NAPIER KennedyParkMotor Camp 5, 6, 7th JANUARY 2006 One of the Register’s big events: Be part of it! Early booking was a must! Email: [email protected] BMW Owners Register Newsletter 9 November 2006 AGM Minutes Minutes of the BMWOR AGM October 7, 2006 Meeting start: 4:45 pm President Dick Tucker welcomed all present. Apologies: PeterZinc, Jim Young, Wayne & Helen Cann, Clive & Jean Dominy, Richard Kuysten, Barry Richardson, Gavin Tait, Geoff & Gill Odell, Jeremy Scott, Tony & Maria Jericevich, Paul Roxburgh, Neville & Kay Parker, Heather Mitchel-Anyon, Graeme & Carole Flyger, Grant & Harriet McRae, Maurice Fletcher, Roger & Gilian Drayton, Max Charlton, Robert & Ester Joe Mark and Karen Greer. Minutes: Dick read out the minutes of the last AGM and asked for someone to move that they are true and correct. Mover: Jill Barter Seconded: John Wuts All were in favour nobody against. Correspondence: Several of the usual magazines have arrived and are available for people to read on the table in the back of the room. Reports: Executive and area reports as emailed to editor Regalia: Ingel showcased a new set of regalia in a range of sizes and colours with attractive prices. Ingel has caps, tshirts, jackets and many more items. He mentioned that the club made next to nothing on these and that this was for the benefit of the members. Please contact Ingel & Leslie for more information. Dick and Ingel thank Noel and Maria for the many years of service they have put into this area. Accounts: Accounts were available on the tables for viewing. And a lively discussion resulted around a number of items. The running cost of the website was queried and it was pointed out that it is financially self supporting thanks to the sponsors who advertise on it. John Wuts and Margaret explained the details. Norm Nicol and Darryl Applegate wanted to know if there were any other costs. They were told that the club is locked into the payment system for two years. Norman was told that there is a small fee per transaction. Norman questioned the need for such a system and suggested the use of bank transfers instead. Some confusion resulted regarding the online payment system as it is run by eftpos. It was later clarified that it is an online credit card payment facility so that members can pay for memberships and events. John Wuts took the opportunity to point out that the system has teething problems and that it has created more work for the Treasurer and the Membership Secretary instead. Dick pointed out that the club needed to look to the future and systems like this would make things easier in the long run. He said that the website would need to be improved before the regalia could be put on as well. Accounts were moved by Dan Young and seconded by Bruce Frost. General Business: Dick reminded people about the Annual Rally in Napier. There will be a Concourse de Elegance, Gymkhana and a treasure hunt. He is looking for helper from the Bay. The Rag Rally is already booked at Taylor Lodge, the same venue as this year. Dick is also planning a Tour Guide competition with entries to be judged at the end of year committee meeting. Submissions should include the following, NZ scenery, people and motorbikes. The timing of the new tour guide was discussed and Norm Nicol suggested that the tour guide should be produced for the start of the next financial year and this was agreed on. However, John Wuts said that he was happy to produce an interim tour guide before Christmas. John Baker introduced a number of new products and informed members that they won’t lose the no claims bonus once they have been claim free for four years. Individual members would have received a note on their renewal form stating the date from when this bonus would apply. He also suggested that if you wanted to reduce your premiums you should turn 60, not ride a lot and only ride one bike at a time under the combined bike insurance scheme. He pointed out that the BMW club has the best terms and conditions on their insurance policy. He went on to remind people that if they took part in a training course that John Baker would send them a $50 refund, once annually. He also pointed out that members with high value bikes and cars received the best value from their insurance. John then thanked the club for having been given the opportunity to speak at the AGM. BMW Owners Register Newsletter 10 November 2006 Terry Ellis Smith queried why John Baker had been dropped as an indemnity insurer for the club. He went on to say that the club should show loyalty towards its sponsors. Dick explained that he had approached Barnes Jenkins and John Baker for a quote and the offer from Barnes Jenkins was the better of the two. Malcolm and Terry spoke in support of John Baker and Noel suggested that this arrangement should be reviewed on expiry. Lance Nixon brought up the topic of improved club membership cards which was followed by a lively discussion about the pros and cons of these. Norman mentioned that he collected his membership card in an envelope but had no other use for them. Henry suggested laminated cards with dealer information on the back. A new member suggested that plastic cards could attract sponsorship. The topic of discounts on presenting membership cards was brought up by Wendy Slater. Henry Plowright responded that he always looks after his repeat customers and mentioned that an across the board discount was inappropriate. Ian pointed out that the Ulysses membership card qualifies for a Waiheke ferry discount. In the end John Baker and Henry Plowright ended the debate by agreeing to sponsor a plastic of membership card. This was moved by Henry Plowright and seconded by Ingel Jansen. Dick moved that the membership fee be increased to $40 per annum with 10% of that sum for the partner. Dick was asked why the increase was necessary. Lance Nixon and Dan Young suggested that this should have been published in the newsletter well in advance. Dick responded that he had mentioned in the President’s podium. He pointed out that the money would allow the club to subsidise more events like rider training and used this opportunity say that anyone needing assistance with rider training to contact him. He also mentioned that the increase would allow the editor to include some colour pages in the newsletter. The need for this was question by Darryl who pointed out that the newsletter was already available in colour on the website. The issue was then voted on, but it became clear that a quick count would not be appropriate as there was no clear majority. A more accurate count followed with 38 in Favour and 28 against, the fee increase was carried. Dick will follow this up with more detailed information on the fee increase. General Business closed followed by the election of club officials. Dick Tucker and Peter Zink were re-elected without opposition. There were no nominations for Treasurer and for Editor. These positions remained unfilled. Noel Walker spoke in support of taking on a position in the club and pointed out that this was a rewarding activity. Terry Ellis-Smith suggested that it was time for new members to step up to the mark, as a lot of the long term members had held positions in the past. Dave, the out going editor, offered to publish the next two newsletters to give the club more time to find a replacement. This was accepted thankfully. Gun Trophy nominations were deferred to the Christmas meeting as candidates had not been published in advance and could not be voted on until later. This was moved by Maria Nicol and seconded by Cheryl Morris. Noel reminded people that Oops award nomination could be made now so that the trophy could be awarded at the Christmas meeting. Malcolm Sargent suggested that the trophy be awarded to Dick for not collecting Gun Trophy nominations, this was immediately seconded by Noel, who went on to say that the Oops trophy was steeped in tradition and it was really an honour to receive it. The meeting closed 6:45 Following the meeting we had a good dinner and Dick held the always popular raffle with able help from Ingel. Judging by the smiles of the winners the prizes sponsored by BMW, Experience BMW, BMWOR, John Baker Insurance and Protector Insurance were much appreciated. Following the raffle the band started to play and soon the first dancers appeared. Alexander Breig (standing in for Secretary Peter Zink) BMW Owners Register Newsletter 11 November 2006 The 2006 agm Reports of the AGM 2006 President The past year has been a steady one for the BMWOR, the first major event being the Annual Rally at Flock Hill, meeting many of you from the South was most enjoyable. I want to thank Geoff and Gill from Canterbury and Rodney from Canterbury Rides, the new Christchurch BMW dealer for respectively running and supporting the event. A little later I took the opportunity to join Wellington and Rangiteki in Rotorua where Tamaki and I were made to feel most welcome in the traditional Kiwi fashion over pre-dinner ales and dinner. The following day we joined BOP on a ride from Tauranga and again, we enjoyed lunch with the BOP riders in a fine café in Tairua. The Rough as Guts (or RAG) rally at Taylor’s Lodge in National Park drew a good number of riders and pillions. I enjoyed the fact we were back to basics with everyone mucking in for dinner then sitting around a roaring fire afterward, telling lies and tall tales, just like the old days. I’ll like to especially thank Greg and Clifford for running this event once more, long may it continue. I am indebted to John Glasswell of BMWNZ and Neil from Experience BMW for supplying the raffle prizes for both the Annual Rally and AGM. One of the major changes this year has been the move of the BMW Motorad NZ functions, with the exception of John Glasswell, the NZ after sales manager, to Australia. The jury is still out on whether this move is in the best interests of NZ BMW owners and Register members. I am gratefull to John Glasswell for the opportunity to ride a new F800ST around the Coromandel last week, for those of you waiting to see what it’s like, with its low C of G and the same dry weight as my old F650 Funduro, it’s a 650CS on steroids! What a great little machine. Finally I want to thank the advertisers in our fine newsletter and our website for supporting us over the past year. A special mention of John Baker Insurance who continues to support BMW riders with his taylored insurance packages and is here today to speak once more. I would like to ask you all to support, wherever possible, those that support us in the Register. Once more, that’s all from me, take care, look after your mates and keep the sticky side down. Secretary My apologies for not being present at the AGM this year. My thanks to Alex for filling in for me. I am writing this while visiting Twickenham, and can’t help noticing more bikes and scooters in London than we are used to seeing in NZ, even though the weather is at least as wet as what we are used to. It has been an interesting first year as secretary, with some challenges initially in getting to grips with the tasks needed. I have a huge thanks to give to my fellow executive; Margaret, “Wutsie”, Dave the area Reps, Noel and then Ingel and especially to our president, Dick. There is much that just seems to get done, because someone else is putting in thought and effort somewhere. I’m sure the executive members would also agree that we are grateful for the encouraging advice and help offered to us by previous executive members and the support given by BMWNZ and the regional dealerships. We have experienced some unusual and special events this year, in addition to the launch of many new machines. We had Charlie Boorman visit NZ a year ago, and we held skills training in November last year – thanks to the assistance of BMW NZ, NZ Police riders and John Baker. I hope we can offer more innovative and fun events in the year to come. My thanks to all those who regularly take on leadership roles on the regular club rides and special functions during the year. Thanks also to those who just come along and who invite their friends! I look forward to meeting with the new executive members joining us in the year to come and to meeting more of you over the next half of my tenure as secretary. Peter Zink. Secretary. Treasurer BMW Owners Register Newsletter 12 November 2006 This past year has been a challenging time for the Treasurer with the introduction of the EFTPOS payment system. It was a nightmare to start with but continued fine tuning has made it manageable and I feel more work is needed to make it user friendly. There were some delays in processing payments due to lack of information coming in from Register members. I.e. The payment notice would arrive without notice of whom it was from and for what it was for. Please help the incoming Treasurer by filling in all fields correctly and fully. The Register remains in a good financial position overall and although the year ended with us having to break into one of our investments, the funds are there for the new committee to re-instate, if they desire, due to subs. payments. To clear up a misconception I have seen in the newsletter, my monthly reports were always sent to Auckland with time to kill. But there were occasions when I would receive a very last minute SOS call/e-mail asking for them to be resent as the originals had been misplaced. There were times when I just could not access my computer to comply, - so I say sorry to you. To Peter and Dick, I thank you for your assistance from afar and thank you for being there especially in the early EFTPOS months. To John Wuts and Barbara Ennor and indeed all the Hawke’s Bay BMWOR family, a huge thank you for your support and encouragement when it was needed. John, another thank you for auditing the books in preparation for this AGM. To the Register in general, Thanks. Due to a change of personal directions I can no longer afford to spend weekends balancing the books and therefore the Treasury must go and I wish the new appointee all the best and the support is always there. Lastly to Dave a huge thank you for your endless patience and support. When needed: You are a special person. Membership Secy My second year as membership secretary was certainly a bit more relaxed than the first one. After Colin Sweetman’s greatly appreciated help I slowly got the hang of it all. I hope I didn’t let too many members wait too long for their new membership cards but sometimes when you find 45 renewals in the letterbox it takes a bit of time to catch up. I hope the tick-boxes for the address or bike changes have helped. Those of you who followed the instruction made my job a lot easier as I didn’t have to look up each field to check for any change. The bike shops must have had a good year as I saw quite a few new bikes come through! Also, a new tour guide should be in your December issue - with the confusion over covers last year I didn’t get it ready in time. I was delighted with the promise of proper membership cards that Henry from Experience BMW and John from John Baker Insurance decided to underwrite. Keep in mind that your newsletter label carries both your membership number as well as the area you come under. This area code is different from the Post Office code and I use it to let your area rep know about new members. Looking forward to an exciting year with lots of sunshine rides, John Wuts BMWOR Membership Secretary Editor Well two fast years has gone by since we took up the position of Editor. When one starts in the position, one thinks; “What is going to happen over the next two years?” But it all works out. Over the past two years as editor we have: 1. 2. 3. Celebrated the 30 year Register anniversary. Produced the first part-colour Newsletter. Up-Load Newsletters to the new Register web-site. While the position does take a chunk of one’s spare time in a month, the rewards by far exceed the sacrifice of time. For us (Cheryl & I) it worked well for us as a team. While one would prepare the draft, the other would proof read before the submission to the printers. The proof reading in itself is a full-on concentrated job. We opted to burn Newsletters to Compact Disc and submit to the printers that way. While the standard unofficial accepted minimum size of newsletter would be 20 pages, for the most part, I struggled to fit regular and submitted material into a 24 page newsletter. This is no less, due to the commitment and enthusiasm of the members to write up articles and forward them on to us for inclusion. Indeed, without the contributions, there would not be a newsletter; just a bulletin of meetings. And while we have had “well done!” notes and comments from the members on the newsletter it is the members themselves that have made the newsletter what it is. We just collate what we have on the desk. The quality of articles submitted to us has been outstanding and has helped make the Newsletter such a success. We do thank all those people from all over the country, who contributed articles, as without you, there would be no Newsletter. Statistically, over a run of 22 newsletters, the page count worked out as: 20 pages: 5 Newsletters. The organiser nominates the destination and regrouping stages along the way, but otherwise has no influence upon the way that riders behave on the road. There is no element of organised competition in the rides. Riding Code: 1. All register members on register rides shall do so as individuals responsible for their own safety and shall take into account the safety of others they encounter on the ride. 2. Register members are responsible for ensuring that their motorcycles are in a safe and legal condition, the minimum being to Warrant of Fitness standards. 3. Riders, pillions, and sidecar passengers where required, shall have as a minimum Standards New Zealand approved motorcycle helmets, and stout footwear, gloves and clothing that will be capable of protecting their body in the event of a mishap. 4. Register members are to go to the aid of any others suffering a mishap. 5. Ride organisers shall nominate the destination for the ride as well as any regrouping locations or other stops. The organiser is not responsible for other rider’s behaviour or safety. 6. Riders shall ride at a speed and in a way that is comfortable for them. Do not ride outside your personal comfort envelope. 7. If the rider is unfamiliar with the route, they shall arrange to follow another rider who does know the way and who travels at a comfortable pace. 8. Riders who decide to travel as a group shall adopt a staggered riding formation such that there is an accepted following distance to the rider immediately in front. A reasonable following distance is indicated by a time of two seconds between riders for dry conditions, and longer for inclement conditions and on loose surfaces. 9. The Organiser and or the Register are not responsible for participant’s safety, and all participants participate at their own risk. All participants are aware that they are travelling on open public roads and are responsible for their own safety and compliance with all Road Rules and Laws. Thank you everyone: The executive, the area reps., the contributors, the advertisers, and the folding team in Wellington. And those that are not here; NZ Post, and Printstop Lower Hutt. Thank you for the co-operation and net-working. Again, I must high-light the collected efforts of the Wellington branch members who give of their time each month for the “Folding Night” team. They are an important part of the Newsletter production. And Cheryl, for proof reading every edition before going to the printers. Sometimes it has been a rush job on a Sunday night evening – the eve of a working week, to get the newsletter formatted to pdf for the printers. This invariably means a late night The Area Reps.: If it makes sense, I’d like to dedicate this report to you. You guys are an important link with the Editor and the Register members: I recognise that. I say a special thank you to these folk, for their fine efforts in preparing the calendar and the activity report every month. Sometimes they are late; sometimes they don’t even come. But never-the-less, they still deserve the recognition. We look forward to supporting the incoming editor and wish him/her the success we have enjoyed. It’s been a great 2 years! Dave & Cheryl Morris AREA REPS. Northland Not Recieved. Auckland The few who turn up enjoy the rides manly new members to the club. It is disappointing more members do not support the rides as we have added new ride venues. We are riding north and south each month and have added new lunch stops. Rides are posted three months in advance and this does give members an opportunity to plan there calendars in advance. Dean took over from Noel Walker during 2006. Waikato In the Waikato we had some rides with BOP. with about four to five Waikato members turning up. This is working out well. It is still hard to get Waikato members on rides. But support is growing. As a new member and new area rep I am slowly learning my way. JAN. BOP Please accept my apologies for missing this year’s AGM, but work and study prevents me from joining you all in Taupo. I am pleased to report that the Bay of Plenty branch of the Register continues in a satisfactory condition. Monthly social meetings and club rides have been well attended. The membership continues to rise, with several new members being actively involved in register activities. A prominent feature during this last year has been the large number of impromptu rides, often organized by Peter Lyner. These are great fun, and usually make best use of fine riding weather. In strong contrast, our annual Longest Day Ride was completely washed out. Over the last few months we have joined in with the Waikato branch to lend them support until they have the numbers to become self-supporting. This has worked well, although we have struggled to co-ordinate the sudden transition to larger riding group numbers. Our major events for the year, Norma’s Wine Tasting Weekend and the annual Hot August Night, were both successful. The continued attendance by members from Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Auckland, Hamilton and Wanganui at our events is very much appreciated. During this summer we have three overnight trips planned, so there is something to look forward to. Special thanks are due to the ever-enthusiastic Peter Lyner and Norma Blackett, and also the many regulars who help to keep the club active. Clive Dominy. Continued page 20.......... BMW Owners Register Newsletter 19 November 2006 .........Continued from page 19 East Coast Hawke’s Bay has had an interesting year with our monthly dinners well attended and a ride each month. We have had members join the Nelson group for a ride through Molesworth and Rainbow stations, as well as joining the Manawatu group for a couple of rides. We had members attend the Annual Rally, Hot August Night and Henry’s Wicked Waitomo Weekend. The Bay of Plenty group visited Hawkes Bay for a wine trail weekend and dinner. Looking forward to a warm sunny summer so that we can enjoy many more rides and activities. Dave. Taranaki Hello all, I’m not sure where the year has gone but it has gone somewhere. First I would like to apologise for not being at the AGM, work called. Not much has happen to the club in the last year. It’s really hard to get members along to rides and when we do it’s the same members. Most of the time there’s only 3 or 4 of us. Not having a BMW dealership down here has taken its toll on membership. So where do we go from here. I’m not sure. I will orgaise a few rides over summer to see what the feeling is out there. I would hate to see the club fold in Taranaki so if there’s are any members in Taranaki that has any ideas or would like to take over from me please give me a ring. Valma Rangitikei Well, the register year of 2005/2006 has been and gone and for Rangitikei I hope it has been an active and interesting range of activities. Some statistics: Tea meetings 7, Wanganui 4 and Palmerston North 3. Rides North 5, South 4, East 3, West 1, total 13. Impromptu rides 2. 2 weekends away to Rotorua and to Raurimu. Brunch rides 1. Rides with Wellington 5. Midweek Ride and Dines 3. Cancelled rides 2. Xmas parties 1. The high points - Wellington anniversary weekend to Tamaki Brothers Maori Village in Rotorua. Star performer - the bus driver to the village. Weekend away to Raurimu with Wellington. The combined rides and rendezvous with Wellington; especially, Round the Bays, East of Dannevirke and to Ohakea Air Force Museum. Our best local rides were I think Central Hawke’s Bay and Napier day rides. Special appreciation to Gillian and Roger Drayton for hosting our wonderful Christmas garden party. My thanks to Grant McRae and Roger Drayton who have assisted with rides and write-ups through the year. Thank you Grant also for supplying many great photos of our activities. Again we are grateful are to Lance Nixon for his willingness to assist the register in many ways. Finally national committee’s assistance with Christmas celebrations is appreciated. It is my opinion that at our AGM consideration be given to having a short meeting for area reps. to discuss matters of mutual benefit. Graeme Flyger. Wellington Once again I can report on a successful year for the Wellington area. We continue to meet for a ride on the second Sunday of each month. Unfortunately, Transit has not built any new roads in the lower North Island, so we continue to ride out of the Wellington area starting our journeys on either SH1 or SH2. Variety has been provided by a new meeting point at BP Mana where we can fill up on 98 octane and enjoy coffee in the Connect café before departing. Our rides always include a lunch stop and we have tried some new cafes. Last month’s short ride in Whiteman’s Valley terminated at the Short Straw Café, a straw bale building, where we had an enjoyable lunch. The trip to Ohakea brought out a huge crowd of bikes and people on a glorious day, all of which will be hard to beat; while the Mothers Day run was also well patronised, even though it was a very wet day. A favourite destination is the Gladstone Inn where we usually run into other bikers. We’ve also met occasionally in the evening at the Parrot and Jigger in Lower Hutt for a meal and chat. Continued page 21.......... BMW Owners Register Newsletter 20 November 2006 .........Continued from page 20 We have had Wellington based newsletter editors for the past two years, and the folders have met each month at the home of David and Elizabeth Boyes. Our thanks to the keen team of helpers, the Boyes for their hospitality, and Dave and Cheryl for their unstinting efforts. I am stepping down from the area committee this year but new members are joining the old crew of Dave, Dave, Dave and Bill, who will continue to organise events. Norm Nichol Nelson Greetings to all. I hope everyone had a good ride to the meeting. I would like to thank the club for the Christmas money. This was put to good use at a Christmas BBQ which was attended by about 10 people. Due to the low turnout we also had a midwinter BBQ at which we had over 20 people. For Nelson this is a good turnout. Over the last year we have made more BMW contacts with 6 new members joining the Register. We aim to have a ride every month and this year we only missed one ride due to bad weather. It snowed in sunny Nelson. Overall the turnout for the rides has been good. Everyone seems to enjoy the rides and the company of the others. This of course is what it’s all about. I am planning another trip through Molesworth and Rainbow Stations this year. At the moment I am working on Saturday the 30th of December. This can be changed to suit, for any interested persons or I will happily ride Molesworth/Rainbow a couple of times to assist groups if they want. Another of our Nelson members is planning a trip to Australia. He plans to travel around the coast of Australia over a period of 2 months or so. He is looking at going about March/April to get the cooler weather. The member is Graeme GALEY. Phone 027 445 1928, E Mail [email protected] In all we have had a very good year, drunk lots of coffee and talked a lot. It’s been pretty good down here in sunny Nelson. Have a safe and enjoyable ride home. Gavin TAIT Marlborough First of all I would like to put in an apology for not attending the AGM. Another twelve months have gone by. Twelve monthly coffee nights have been held with numerous members turning up from time to time. Three Marlborough members attended Canterbury’s Rag rally held at Collingwood late 2005. Our summer bar-b-que was held in January with some of our members attending. Thankyou to BMWOR of NZ. for the donation to go towards putting this event on. Some of our members also attended the annual rally at Flock Hill earlier this year which was very enjoyable. Fairly breezy leaving Flock Hill & Canterbury on the Sunday after the rally. Welcome to Jack a member who transferred down to Blenheim from the North Island, & I believe we have lost a couple of members due to non-renewal. All in all a fairly quiet year for us members down here in Marlborough. Kelvin Watson, Marlborough Area Rep. Canterbury Another year as Canterbury Branch rep. has now passed and, as a group of riders, members have collected some more bike ride and lunch memories. Some of the highlights of the year include the November 2005 RAG Rally to Collingwood. Although only a small group of riders attended we had a very enjoyable long weekend at Collingwood and we were especially pleased to be joined for dinner by some of the Nelson and Marlborough club members. Other rides earlier in the year included visits to Arthur’s Pass, Kaikoura and our annual joint ride with the Retreads club through the Leader Valley. The winter months saw some particularly chilly weather throughout Canterbury which discouraged many riders from venturing out. However a hardy few made it over the hill to Akaroa and even turned up on an abysmal day to try the Greta Valley loop (sensible people decided not to bother, though!). July saw quite a large group zoom up to Hanmer on what looked as if it was going to be a mediocre day but, in fact, turned out to be glorious at our destination and warm enough to eat lunch outside. We have also continued with our monthly Sunday lunch meetings at the Blue Duck. However, it would seem that on very busy days the venue may be getting a little small for our group and we may need to consider an alternative for next year. Continued page 24.......... As noted in the October newsletter we have decided to proffer our resignation as area reps for Canterbury from the date of the AGM. This is due to the pressure of other commitments in both work and family life. We are very much hoping that one or more other Canterbury members will be prepared to take a turn holding the reins (or should that be the handlebars!! Our term as reps has been an enjoyable one and our thanks are extended to the all involved with the club. In particular, thanks to Kelvin and Julia Watson for putting us up when we did the Marlborough Grape Ride! Geoff and Gill Odell Otago/Southland First of all, my apologies for my non-attendance. But I had a better offer—a ride up to Cairns from Sydney and several days in Port Douglas! This past year has been a steady rather than spectacular one for the Otago/ Southland branch, but membership has increased, especially recently. We still have the problem of the lack of a BMW agency, and it really is unrealistic to travel to Christchurch. However, most members seem to have found someone to look after their pride and joy, and I would recommend Steve and the boys at Honda Otago who are now officially a BMW servicing agency. They do a very good job, take a real interest in your bike, and they go out of their way to help those who live outside Dunedin with repairs, servicing or the supply of parts etc. Our membership is possibly more farflung than ever now and while this precludes local meetings, it does make for some very BMW Owners Register Newsletter 24 Cont.page 25.......... Winter ended here with a sudden onslaught of nor-westers, and our 3 September “First Buds of Spring” ride-in to Lawrence was held on a beautiful day between gales! This ride attracted 22 people and this is hopefully a good omen for the year ahead. Interest in BMWs is certainly high, although we don’t have the same opportunity as other members do to see new bikes on the floor. It is, however, a real cause of excitement when someone turns up with a new model on a ride! 25 TANK BAG, R1100RT. Genuine BMW bag, very little use (as new), excellent condition. $200. I look forward to meeting up with you again at the Rally in Napier. Barry Richardson Life is a party at which you arrive after it has begun, and depart from before it has ended. This month’s ride lies ahead (at the time of writing), so report out next Newsletter. Our social night was very good, and was much improved the presence of Jean and Malcolm Gibbons, and Maria and Noel Walker. These good people had travelled all the way from Auckland to present Jean and myself with our 10 Year pins and certificate! This was very much appreciated, and clearly demonstrates that there are some really wonderful people in the Register. Norma Blackett has her thinking cap on. She is thinking thoughts about next year’s Wine Tasting Weekend in early March (tentative date). We all know that Norma organises a fantastic weekend. Like all organisers, she wonders how much interest there will be. So, please phone her, or send an email to express your interest. This event is open to all BMWOR members (both Islands). There are three (3) weekends away to choose from: November 17 - 19, December 16 –18, and we join Wellington in New Plymouth on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 January 2007. Please email if not booked in, but interested. Clive. East Coast Sunday 15th saw six bikes leave Bay View to ride up to cafe 287 in Wairoa. The weather was hot and sunny but a little windy in places. The Napier Wairoa road is one of those great motor cycling roads and quite a few bikes were out enjoying this twists and turns it offers. Once at the cafe we enjoyed a great lunch then headed to Frasertown where we turned onto the Tiniroto road but only going as far as Te Reinga. After a look at the falls it was decided that the two 1200GS’s would take the long way home via Putere and Raupunga while the rest of us returned the way we went up. Good to have Richard and Vanessa Tustin join us on this ride, hope you enjoyed the gravel section on the way home. The end of year B.B.Q. is on the 25th Nov. Please ring me if you intend to come along so that we can get an idea of numbers attending. Dave. BMW Owners Register Newsletter Taranaki Nil received. and on the the Awaiti Gardens at Carterton. Dave M. Rangitikei We had a good turnout at the meal as reported last month, but the meal gathering at Breakers in Palmerston North had even better patronage. We added another table to the long one they had reserved, and then another was needed. It was a great catch up in fine company with good meals (you have to order them at the bar as they do not “wait”. We quickly got the hang of that.) Our big ride this month was one that Roger and Gillian will tell us about next month. Think “carrot” and you are on the right track (all tar sealed of course). The biggie for the Register in October was the AGM in Taupo. We had our group well represented, and you will no doubt have others write about the business of the day, or we get the minutes in due course. Lots to think about as direction and style were shared. I hope next year’s meeting is able to generate as much debate, and that a “business case” approach becomes de rigeur. I have to congratulate John Baker, who, even briefly on the back foot, was able to join forces with the ever affable Henry Plowright to offer a shared sponsorship deal on the spot for plastic membership cards. Thanks guys. Appreciated!!! Lance 1550 for Graeme (who is due back soon). Nelson 15th October. Ride to Takaka. The early morning dawned fine and sunny without a cloud in the sky. Maybe the weather forecast was wrong. No. By the time we met at the Railway Hotel car park at 10.00am it had clouded over; although it was still warm. In all 13 bikes and 14 people arrived for the ride. We headed out of Richmond and on to Riwaka. Here we stopped and let everyone catch up before going over the Takaka hill. The ride over the hill, as usual was brilliant. Although on reaching the top the temperature seemed to drop. In the hills around Takaka it looked like it was raining. We reached Takaka in the dry. It didn’t look too promising though. We had lunch at the Wholemeal Café: Quite a nice place for coffee and a chat. On leaving the weather had cleared a bit. So we made our way back over the hill to Motueka where some of us again stopped at the Mooring Cafe for coffee and carrot cake. We chatted for some time then headed of to our homes. This was the only time during the ride that we got wet. It was raining. In all, another good ride enjoyed by all. Gavin Wellington October ride. A ride for those that did not go to the AGM. From what I hear it was a great run. 6 bikes turned up and it was fantastic bike-riding conditions. Over our favourite hill, the Rimutaka, Nil received. Canterbury Otago/Southland Nil received.
