SO YOU PREFER TO DO YOUR OWN PACKING...
LET US HELP YOU DO IT RIGHT
GP Movers provide the options of partial or full
packing and unpacking services.
Some of our clients choose to save on time and
assign their moving crew to complete the task of
packing, while others prefer the control of packing
and the resulted lower cost. Either way you choose,
proper packing is essential for the successful transfer
of your possessions. If you choose to do some or all of
your packing, be sure to browse our “Pack Like a Pro”
guidelines and know-hows.
PACKING PREPARATION
• Contact your GP Movers agent for boxes and packing materials.
• Have at fingertips: thick permanent marker, packing paper, moving boxes of assorted sizes and packing tape.
• Designate and label a “Parts Box” for hardware from dismantled furniture and similar items. Bag each set of
parts and mark what item they belong to. Leave the box open on the day of your scheduled relocation, in case
the moving crew has additional items to disassemble.
• Keep in mind: Packed boxes should not weigh more than 50 pounds each.
• Pack heavy items (such as books) in small boxes, lightweight items (such as linens) in large boxes.
• Avoid overfilling but use crumpled paper for a firm fit that prevents shifting and/or crushing. Pad the bottom
and sides of boxes with paper, then pad the top prior to sealing.
• Build the box in layers, with heaviest items at the bottom and lightest on the top.
• Pack seldom used items and out-of-season items first, then infrequently used items, leaving items in daily
use last.
• Discard, sell or give away items you no longer need, rather than paying to relocate them.
• Remove items from plastic storage containers and repack them in boxes.

Live plants require special
handling. Please ask for
our special brochure about
relocating plants. Artificial
plants and flowers should
be packed in a separate
box. Wrap each stem
carefully in tissue. Make
sure the box is very sturdy
to prevent crushing. Label
box “FRAGILE” and “THIS
SIDE UP”.
Remove light bulbs and
lamp harp. Wrap
separately. Cushion the
lamp base well. More than
one lamp may be boxed
in a carton. Wrap lamp
shades in tissue paper
or linens. Line a box with
clean paper padding, at
least two inches on all
sides. Place shades in a
separate box. You may
nest shades as long
as they do not touch.

PROTECT YOUR BELONGINGS THE
PROFESSIONAL WAY
Heavy-duty reinforced boxes in a variety of sizes, packing tape and paper
are available from your GP Movers representative. Please select and use
the proper moving boxes and materials. Once you have determined the
items to relocate, we will gladly advise you on containers which will best
accommodate your needs.
Remember that improper packing materials may prove costly in the long
run for several reasons:
•
Used boxes may be deformed, compromised and lack the heavy weight
reinforcement of household goods boxes.
• Boxes in odd sizes and shapes make loading difficult and less efficient.
In addition, they may not fit well together, causing other boxes to shift
during transit. In extreme cases, insufficient boxes may be refused for
transportation if they jeopardize the safe transportation of the contents
of the load.
•
It is important to use genuine packing tape. Other types of tape (such
as masking tape) do not adhere as strongly and do not offer the same
strength. Newspaper may be used for padding and wrapping some
items. However, items such as porcelain and china should be wrapped in
tissue or special moving paper to prevent ink transfer.
