Summer Tour to Black Diamond and Back
Words and Photos by Ken Case
The morning of August 3, 2013 dawned damp
and threatening. None the less, 12 carloads of
fearless ALFA and FIAT loving car crazies drove
off into the mist. The event was the annual August drive with quiz questions along the way,
sponsored by Ken and Louisa Case.
The fearless group faced heavy traffic leaving
Issaquah, but soon was zipping along some
very pleasant back roads toward Black Diamond. Along the way an interesting one lane
bridge was encountered along with some less
than interesting but very rough road. Still the
group pressed on arriving at the Black Diamond
History Museum about 12:30 PM.
Upon arrival, the museum president Keith Watson gave a short and enlightening lecture on
the unique history of the Black Diamond area.
Following the lecture, refreshments were
served including homemade caramel.
Participants
then toured the museum and visited the 100+ year
old brick oven at the Black Diamond Bakery.
The group then returned to the Extreme Pizza shop in
Issaquah following yet another set of back roads.
Over good food and drink, the route quizzes submitted by participating teams were graded and prizes
were awarded. As it turned out, the quizzes indicated the group was much more clever than you
might think from their demeanor. In fact, three
teams, (Paul and Kristy Affolter, Bill and Judy Gehring and Gordy Hyde and Pam Miltenberger)
submitted perfect scores.
In the end, a good time was had by all, and the
Cases threaten the quiz next year will be much
more diabolical.

One of the nice side lights of our Viva Italia show we
hold in late July is the donations for the local food
bank. I watched many people show up with bags or
handfuls of food donations. I received a nice “Thank You” letter from Natalie Oswald at
the Maltby Food Bank. She was thanking all of us for the donation of over 140 pounds
of donated food. Nicely done to all of you for your help!
I was strolling through one of the most prestigious auto museums around… the Petersen Automobile Museum in LA, and found zero Alfa Romeos. ( I found 3 different photos
of Alfas on the wall but that’s it!) I did find one of the
rare cars called a GSM. The GSM, for Glassport Motor
Company, was made in Cape Town, South Africa between 1958 and
1964. The bodies
were made out of
fiberglass… a new
material at the
time. The display
car was the 1959
GSM Dart-Alfa. Though most of these cars had
Ford or Coventry Climax engines, this car was powGSM Dart-Alfa
ered by the 1290cc 4 cyl Alfa motor.

Alfas Sell Well at Monterey
During the Monterey Car Week in August, every car auction company puts on events. Last year, the talk was Jon Shirley’s
250 TR selling for $16.4 million. This year it was a Ferrari 275 GTB4/NART Spider that surprised the crowd by selling at
$27.5 million. There are many other amazing sales that happen that don’t grab the headlines.
Probably the nicest 1969 Alfa 1750 Spider Veloce sold for $121,000. The car was an amazingly well
preserved car winning AROC concours wins during it’s lifetime, but then it was restored to better than
new in 2009. Now its off to a good home where someone will have a new 1969 car.
$126,500
Selling for $126,500 was a 1964 Giulia SS. The car was not over restored but was in excellent shape. It had a 1600cc motor, Webers, but
looked extremely stock and period correct.
Next was a 1965 Alfa 2600 Spider that was just recently restored. It
brought in $93,500.
$77,000
A rarely seen Giulia Super Giardinetta (Police wagon) from 1974. It
was fully restored and sold for $77,000.
$121,000
$93,500
$253,000
A very original and rare 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Alleggerita sold for the nice price of $253,000. This is another car that was
in great condition without being overly restored.
$814,000
The sight of a 1950 Alfa 6c2500 Coupe is rare enough, even more rare to see one come up
for sale. But one did, and sold for $814,000.
$99,000
The white Alfa Romeo Montreal from 1973 sold for the price of
$99,000 after finishing its restoration earlier this year.
$4,840,000
A car we may recognize, the 1948 6C2500 Competizione that
had been restored and shown by our local Alfista, David Smith, sold for a very respectable
$4.84 million. Luckily, David still has a few amazing Alfas.
One very unique sale was the full scale design mockup of the 2012
Disco Volante. Though it was a non-running mockup only for display, it sold for $66,000… I think that may be a steal of a deal.
One owner cars from 1973 don’t show up every day, but the 1973 Giallo spider was auctioned
after 40 years with the same owner. It was not restored, but in the incredible original condition
with all records, manuals, and notes. It brought in $24,750 for
$63,800
the original owner’s preservation efforts.
$66,000
$24,750
A few NWARC members may recognize the red 1961 Giulietta
Spider that used to belong to our member, Harry Jones. It sold to
a guy who “always wanted an Alfa” but somehow he was able to sell it after a partial restoration at Autostrada. At auction in August, it sold for $63,800 total.

NWARC BBQ
Most of us know it’s a rather pleasant
drive out to Pacific Raceways, and to
Gary & Marie Patitz home nearby.
Perhaps he’s crazy, but Dave Mericle, a
repeat attendee at the event usually
drives a little further than most of us
since he lives in Southern California.
To make the tale even nuttier, what if I
tell you he attended the NWARC BBQ
in July driving his rare Alfa Romeo Coli
wagon that was done… or almost done
being restored. The last few dozen
restoration tasks were done on the last
couple days before the drive. Then to
make sure he didn’t seem nutty for
travelling so far, he brought along a
navigator from Australia to attend. Its
true. Dave’s navigator was Barry Edmunds, the guy behind the Giulia Super Register and the very well done
newsletter called the Super News.
(You should be subscribed if you own,
or like, Giulia Supers)
Three days on the road, most of it on
Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway)
along the magnificent coast in California and Oregon before we headed
inland to Eugene to pick up Interstate

final destination for this leg of the trip,
Auburn just outside Seattle where we
enjoyed the superb hospitality of our
hosts Gary Patitz and his wife Marie.
Super News
Michael Kay’s Giulia Super
Every once in a while a car appears
that really catches the eye. Such was
the case a few weeks back when I was
in Seattle to attend the annual Pacific
Northwest Historics at the Pacific Raceways.
The car I spotted was a 1967 Giulia
Super owned by Seattle Alfa enthusiast, Mike Kay and driven on this occasion by Peter Emhoff. When the car
appears, the reaction of everyone is universal and for the next couple of hours
the car is the center of attention and subjected to a close examination, the like
of no other that I can recall, as people marveled at the stunning finish with Peter kept busy explaining how he achieved this result.
On the Friday evening a large group of
Alfa folk made their way to our host’s
home for the annual historic race
weekend BBQ and the front and side
lawns around the house were soon
adorned with an impressive array of
Alfas of varying models and ages.
Come Monday morning, we’re back on
the road again, this time heading south
towards the Napa Valley and the Convention.
(Edited article used with permission of the Super
News!)
The restoration was carried out over two years with Mike, who also owns a very
neat 105 GTV, working part-time on the project before handing the project over
to fellow Seattle car enthusiast and master craftsman Peter Emhoff who then
put in around five months of concentrated effort to complete the job.
The exterior, the engine bay, the trunk and their respective hoods were all
given four coats of AR509 followed by three coats of clear; as too was the underside of the car.
Mechanically the car has had a few mods made. Atop the 2 litre motor sits a
stage 3 ported head with oversize valves, Euro cams and a MarelliPlex ignition
system. The rear end is a shimmed 4.56 LSD, the car has been lowered by two
inches and sits on a set of sports springs and each corner has Bilstein shocks to
keep the tires in touch with the road.
Not surprisingly Peter is justifiably proud of the result he achieved with Mike’s
Prugna Super and well he should be as this is undoubtedly one of the most impressive restoration works that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing anywhere. That it was done to a Giulia Super just makes it so worthwhile.
In discussing the car with Peter he did admit to being a bit of a perfectionist.

Alfas and More at Monterey
Photos by Shannon Low and Drew Larrigan
Between my friends, the numerous car events, and our ever busy member; Shannon Low, we have images of the great cars and scenes from
the wonderful week on the Monterey Peninsula. There are numerous
events from the “invitation only” Quail, to Concorso Italiano, Pebble
Beach, Motorsports Reunion, and numerous auction houses with their
parties and festivities. On page 4, I noted some of the auction results,
but on these two pages, we’ll simply share some of the great cars on
display thanks to Shannon Low and Drew Larrigan / eGarage.
This 8c2900 was part of the Alfa Romeo gathering honoring the last year of the 8C tours that
have been held annual for many years! These extremely exclusive and quiet tours have been
organized with almost no publicity. On this last tour, right after these photos were shot, the
group wandered the mountain roads of Idaho.

Italians at Indy
I was lucky enough to be wandering the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway and the Hall of Fame Museum in August. This allowed me to see the track, start finish line, brickyard, and
winner’s circle along with the museum and the basement storage area. Though photography is a welcome thing outside
and upstairs, the last thing you see before entering the basement is a sign that reads, No Photography Beyond This Point.
The museum displays numerous great cars that won the Indy
500, as well as select travelling exhibits like the Rudolf Caracciola trophy display or the Parnelli Jones history of cars. You
can bet I was shooting pictures of all of this
Indy 500 Hall of Fame
Among the March, Reynard, Kurtis, Miller, Dallara, Ford, and
many more racing marques, there are a few Italian cars that
may peak this club’s interest. Right in the middle of the main
floor sits
the Maserati 8CTF that won the 1939 and 1940 Indianapolis races at
the hands of Wilbur Shaw, marking the first time that the same car
and driver won back to-back Indy 500s. Then to put some icing on
the cake in 1941, Wilbur drove the same Maserati to a commanding
lead until a wire wheel failed causing some race ending damage within
the last 100 miles of the race. Stunningly, the same car entered and
ran in every Indianapolis 500 race from 1939 to 1949. The car is
stunning in its dark red color and excellent current condition. The Maserati’s dominance at the track is easy to see in the record books, but
its beginning was a little more in doubt. Ordered by Mike Boyle, the
car arrived in the US from Italy via plane, but unfortunately someone
had failed to drain the coolant first, which had frozen and cracked the
engine block. New parts and spares arrived with only a week to go,
the car was readied and qualified for the start of its illustrious career.
In the museum basement, they had a bright red Ferrari 375 Indy
1939 Maserati 8CTF ran 11 times!

just like the one that ran the 1952 race driven by the great Antonio Ascari. Though Ascari had foregone the Swiss GP to race at
Indy, the effort didn’t pay off as the car qualified back in the pack,
and then broke only 40 laps into the race. Never having any
noteworthy success at Indy, it looked great not winning. Ferrari
never came back to race at Indianapolis, though in 1986, during
one of his many disputes with Bernie Ecclestone and the F1 rules,
Enzo Ferrari threatened to focus factory efforts on Indy and CART
racing. The effort went nowhere, but the engine Ferrari created in
1986 was rebadged in 1991 as an Alfa Romeo, installed in a couple March chassis cars, and raced with mixed success by Roberto
Guerrero, Danny Sullivan, and Al Unser.
Ferrari 375 Indy
Also in the basement, they
had the 1938 Alfa Romeo 308C that looked equally wonderful in its bright corsa
red. The car started life before the war as a road racer, and then came to the US to
run in the 1940 Indy 500. It took 17th overall. After the war, though underpowered
compared to the current competition, this same Alfa ran well in 1946 taking 6 th
place, then again in 1947 taking 7th place, and in 1948 taking 8th place in the Indianapolis 500 races. The same car even competed at places like Pikes Peak at the
hands of Johnny Mauro.
1938 Alfa Romeo 308C
There were other Alfas raced over the
years at Indy, though not on display
upstairs or down at the Hall of Fame.
In 1937-39, Alfa Romeo was represented by driver Rex Mays in the 8c35
(serial #50012) Seal Fast Special.
This car is currently in the Alfa Museum refitted as a 12C-36, however,
the backup frame, parts, engine is currently owned by Peter Giddings and
was racing for all to see and hear at
Alfa P3 Don Lee Special
Spokane earlier this year. Another
Alfa at Indy was the P3 (Serial #50002) which won or did well in many GP and
Miglia events came to the US many years later to race at Indy. Named the Don Lee Special, it competed in the 1946 and
1947 Indianapolis 500 races. Though they managed to qualify to start as high as 9 th, the car’s age showed with it being
much too slow to run near the lead and finished 15th at it’s best.
Rex Mays in the Alfa Romeo 8c35
Prior to these other Italian race cars were the Fiats, competing in both
the first and second Indianapolis 500 races ever at the new track. At
the time the races were called the International 500-Mile Sweepstakes
Race and the track paving was brick. Though the Marmon Wasp won
the inaugural race event in 1911, the team of David Bruce-Brown came
in 3rd place with their Fiat which had led the race for 81 of the 200 laps.
The car in the museum is the 1912 Fiat driven by Teddy Tetzlaff and
uses a 4 cylinder, 598 cubic inch engine. Teddy jumped into the lead of
the 1912 Indy race right at the start of the race only to relinquish that
lead during the 3rd lap. A Mercedes driven by Ralph DePalma and his
riding mechanic took over the lead and dominated the race with as
much as a 5 ½ lap lead before breaking down with 3 laps to go. Though
the Mercedes continued to limp slowly around the track, they watched their
lead erode; the car died completely entering turn 4 on lap 199. The driver
and mechanic jumped out and pushed the car toward the start/finish line, but
though the crowd loved it, race rules required the car to cross under it’s own
power. Meanwhile, Teddy Tetzlaff and the Fiat went on to finish the race in
2nd place behind the winner Joe Dawson in his National, with this being highest position for Fiat in any Indianapolis 500 race. Fiat’s 2nd place in 1912 and
3rd in 1911 marked some of the best Indianapolis performances by an Italian
car behind the dominating Maserati 8CTF.
