It is always wonderful to see your children having a good
start to another school year. It is a blessing to welcome happy
children home after a day of school. But more importantly, it
is a blessing to know that they are being taught by Christian
teachers, who share with our children what it means to learn
about the world in the context of a loving God!

We want to welcome a few new teachers, as well as note
some internal switches between our schools. Maria Tamming
is teaching our Grade 3’s at John Knox, Freda Kleine Deters
is our new Resource Teacher at JKCS, and Nancy Baker has
taken on the Junior Kindergarten class at Covenant. Victoria
Vanderstoep is the Educational Assistant in the Grade 1/2
classroom at John Knox, as well as our After School Care
Coordinator. In terms of internal switches, Claudia DeHaan
has moved to Covenant to lead our Resource Program there,
and Kim Schenk has moved from the Junior Kindergarten
classroom at Covenant to the Senior Kindergarten class at
John Knox. We pray that each of these teachers is feeling
welcomed in these new positions, and that they are seeing
new opportunities for service! As a board, we are very thankful
that our schools are growing in terms of students and families
numbers, and we are excited to see God blessing us with an
ever more diverse community!

Thanks in large part to a dedicated group of volunteers, the
"New Again Construction Essentials” (NACE) Store continues
to grow and we are seeing the fruits of all the hard work!
All the proceeds will go to the reduction of tuition for each
and every family in our schools. Please continue to tell your
family and friends about this great initiative! Please consider
volunteering some time there and/or donating materials that
could be sold. Contact Peggy at 289-566-8463 or email her at

It was wonderful to again get so much support for the
fundraising golf tournament. Thank you to all those who
supported and played. We are looking forward to our
upcoming bazaar, and the amazing community building
event that it is. I’m sure Tony would love to see each and every
one of you in the Produce Room! We know that no matter
which room you visit, you will find something of interest! We
hope to see everyone out at Smithville Christian High School
on Saturday, Nov. 14th, and thank you for all you do to make
this event a great success.

June 2006, I walked out the doors at
John Knox, without looking back. I
was excited to be done grade school
and move on to a new adventure. Fast
forward to September 2015, when I
walked back through the doors at John
Knox for another school year, this time
as an EA in the grade one classroom and
the after school care coordinator. As a
graduate of John Knox, I feel so blessed
to be part of the school community
once again, working alongside the
great team here.
Freda Kleine Deters is a Special
Education Teacher. She has been
working with children and youth with a
variety of disabilities for over 20 years.
She completed her undergraduate
degree in Elementary Education and
Special Education from Calvin College
and her Masters degree in Special
Education from Adam State University
in Alamosa, Colorado. She has been
married to Allen Kleine Deters for
30 years and they together have
successfully raised 3 children, Joshua,
Nathan and Jeremy and welcomed
Olivia, our daughter in law (all whom
have decided to stay in the US for now).
Freda and Allen are currently planting
a missional community called the
Bridge in Niagara Falls, ON. When Freda
isn’t teaching or helping with church
planting activities, she can be found
either taking pictures or geocaching.
She is considering trading in her ski
boots for a kayak. She is excited to be
part of the John Knox family.
I am so excited for the opportunity
that God has given me to be a part of
a dedicated team of educators that
seek to grow God’s children spiritually,
emotionally, and academically at John
Knox Christian School.
I am a graduate of Redeemer
University College where I completed
my Bachelor's Degree in English and
completed the Education Program in
2012. Since I began teaching, I have
grown in my passion for Christian
education and the impact it has,
through my students, in our culture. It
is a privilege to shape the lives of my
students each day, and watch as they
grow in deeper understanding of the
God we serve.
My husband Jason and I have recently
moved to Niagara from Ottawa, where
I was a Grade 5/6 and Special Education
teacher at Community Christian School
in Metcalfe, ON.
I am enthusiastic about cultivating a
love for reading within my students,
and I work to challenge them to reach
their God-given potential. Children are
image bearers of Christ, and therefore
each child displays an aspect of the
creative mind of God.
I look forward to the opportunity to
connect with the students and greater
community here at John Knox.
Since graduating from John Knox, I
attended SCHS and then moved to
Ottawa where I attended Carleton
University. After completing a degree
in Applied Linguistics and Discourse
Studies, I moved to Oshawa, where
I attended Durham College and
completed
my
Communicative
Disorders Assistant certificate.
After 5 years of living far away from
home, I am excited to be living in the
area again with my family and close to
old friends. Outside of work, you will
often find me curled up with a good
book, spending time with my niece
and nephew, out on my rollerblades or
trying new recipes in the kitchen.

Nancy Baker is a teacher with 19 years
experience. She enjoys sharing the
joy of discovery and learning with
her Junior Kindergarten students.
Her hobbies include gardening,
photography, and reading. Nancy has
four children and three grandchildren:
Jillian, Alison (married to Jeff Bootsma)
with grandchildren: Juliana 4, Ava 2,
and Asher, 8 weeks, Craig (married to
Karla VanBeveren), & Eric.
Nancy lives in St. Catharines and
attends Jubilee Fellowship Christian
Reformed Church and is the newest
member of the Refugee Committee.
She loves the Lord and strives to serve
him everyday, by reflecting his love to
the people around her.

CCS GRADE 1/2
Miss Brunsveld
The grade one/two class at Covenant has been busy enjoying Curious George
books. We have watched a few movie clips, written sentences about this curious
little monkey and learned about the co-authors and illustrators H.R. and Margret
Rey. We even tried to fold the same kind of paper boats that George made with
our grade five buddies. Wow, Curious George sure was a smart monkey! We had
trouble doing that! The grade two boys also each wrote a chapter for a book
entitled, “Curious George Goes to Farms.” This homemade book will be entered into
our Covenant library, with a real library sign out pocket and shelved along with all
the other Curious George books.
CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO FARMS
One day Curious George went to a farm, in a car, with the
man in the yellow hat. While the man was talking to the
farmer George decided to go exploring. George saw a truck.
George decided to run and hide in the truck. Then George
jumped out in a leaf pile,
before the dirt fell on the
man with the yellow

Then, George saw a
grain bin. George
decided to open
the door and
jump inside and
the door locked.
The farmer got the
tractor and pulled
the grain bin down,
that George was in.
The Farmer said, “You
must be George. You must go
to the shop”. The man with the yellow hat took George home.

Next George saw the farmer’s house. George decided to go
and check inside. He went upstairs where he saw a door. He
opened the door. Suddenly he saw a toilet! He was curious.
He wanted to know what it did. Suddenly the man with
the yellow hat saw George was gone! George was making
water go all over the place because he kept flushing the
toilet. The man with the yellow hat and the farmer saw
water coming through the window. They took a mop and
cleaned up the water. Then George and the man went home.

Then George saw a cow. George decided to go in the barn
to see what was inside the barn. When he went in the barn
he saw a cow. Mooooo. George got frightened so he ran
back to the man with the yellow hat! - Evan V.
Next, George saw a tractor go by. George decided to jump
on to it. Suddenly it stopped at a big red house. There were
chickens. George was curious. He jumped on to a chicken.
He flew off and ran back to the man with the yellow hat.

to jump in a pail with the flowers. The truck dove to the
market. There they found George in a pail. What a surprise!
The farmer pulled George out of the truck. He called the
man with the yellow hat to pick up George.

to jump on it. He wanted to shave the sheep. He made
a carpet from the wool. He gave it to the man with the

Book Reviews
Calvin and Hobbes – The Revenge of the Baby‐
Sat is a perfect book for people that love comedy and who
are in grade 3, 4, or 5. The two main characters are Calvin and
Hobbes. Hobbes is Calvin’s stuffed tiger that he believes is
real. The best part of the book for me is when Calvin, while
doing his math, asks Susie what 12+9 is and she says 100,000.
Calvin figures out that’s what she said for 3+4.

In the book Venom and Song, seven lords have to be
trained to use their gifts. When they are done, they are going
to attack Veseder Crag and try to go to the portal to get a
map that will show where all the portals are and lots of other
things. They have an estimated 10,000 men and the gwar
have about 50,000 men. The elves are low on supplies. This
book is good for ages 10 and up.

The Bully Boys is a competing story. It takes place
during the war of 1812, around Queenston, Ontario. The
main characters are Thomas (Tommy) Roberts and James
Fitzgibbon. After thwarting a robbery in the local general
store, Tommy travels with Fitzgibbon on his many adventures
to make the Americans retreat back across the Niagara River.
This book is perfect for boys ages 10 and up, but girls will love
it too!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a really good story because the
author Jeff Kinney explains the characters really well. I would
recommend this book for ages 10 and up to 50. Some of the
other details are that it is really funny and it does not have
bad language. The character only thinks about himself but as
life continues, he realizes what he really needs to think about.

Touching Spirit Bear is a great book! It takes place in
Minneapolis, Minnesota and a remote Alaskan Island. The
main character is a teenager named Cole. He goes to the
Island after he attacks a guy named Peter for telling on him
for robbing and trashing a hardware store. He also goes to

the island because he has a criminal record but goes to apply
for circle justice. I recommend this book to ages 10 ‐ 100.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Third Wheel is a funny
book. It takes place at Greg Heffley’s house and school. The
characters are Greg, his brothers Rodrick and Manny, his
mom and dad and his friend Rowly. What happens in the
story is Greg tries to relive not being born yet. I recommend
it for ages 8+.

A Story of Hope is about Terry Fox. Terry was born in
Winnipeg, Manitoba. He wanted to run across Canada. He
had a fake leg. He liked basketball. He also played soccer. He
had two brothers and one sister. He was very athletic. This
book is perfect for ages 8 to adult.

Schooled is a fantastic book/story. This book is for ages
10‐16. The characters are Cap, Naomi, Hugh, Zack, Rain, Mr.
Kasigi, Mrs. Donnely, Sophie, and more. I’d loooooooooove to
tell you some parts, but you have to find out yourself! If you
like school or not, you’ll still love this book.

The Wild Wild West is an amazing story. It’s a Geronimo
Stilton book that takes place in the Wild West. The main
characters are Geronimo, Trap, Thea, and Benjamin. This
story is about Geronimo and his friends lost in the desert and
finding Cactus City. He gets himself in trouble from a good
fighter but the sheriff challenges Geronimo to a rodeo. Will
Geronimo win? This book is perfect for ages 5+.

Calvin and Hobbes is a funny, yet a little bit of a weird
story. The characters in this story are mostly about Calvin
and his stuffed tiger named Hobbes. In Calvin’s imagination
Hobbes is a talking, tall, really smart tiger. But, in real life,
Hobbes is only stuffed. Calvin does everything with him. I
think these books are good for ages 9 and up.

Calvin and Hobbes is a funny book to read. Calvin and
Frindle is a great book. This book takes place in Westfield,
Hobbes have a lot of books. All of the comics take place at
either his house or at school. The characters are Calvin who is
six, and Hobbes who is a stuffed tiger that Calvin pretends is
real. The main problems are that Calvin usually gets in trouble
for throwing stuff at a girl named Susie Derkins. In the summer
he throws water balloons and in winter it is snowballs. This
book is very funny. These books are perfect for all ages.

New Hampshire. Nick is a boy in fifth grade who likes to stir
up trouble. In third grade Nick wanted to turn the classroom
into a tropical paradise, but he started small. First he made
everyone in the class make little palm trees and tape them to
their desk, and his teacher thought it was cute. In fifth grade it
was different. Nick was having some difficulties with getting
out of trouble. Nick made up a new word. Frindle. His teacher
does not like this new word. This book is perfect for ages 8‐11.

Sydney and the Wisconsin Whispering Woods is
a good mystery book. It takes place in Wisconsin at a resort
in the woods. The characters are Sydney, Alexis, Biscuit, Aunt
Dee, the mountain man, and Duncan. Sydney and Alexis meet
Duncan, and Duncan said that girls don’t fish! Sydney went to
go sign up for the fishing contest anyway. They tied Biscuit
outside and went across the street to the grocery store and
when they came back Biscuit was gone! This book is perfect
for ages 8‐adult. There’s a whole series! The series is called
Camp Club Girls. This is a Christian series.

Touching Spirit Bear is an awesome story. Spirit Bear
takes place on an island and in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The
main character is Cole and some others including Garvey,
Edwin, Peter, Cole’s mom anddad, Peter’s mom and dad,
lawyers, and a judge. Spirit Bear is about a boy stuck on an
island wanting to escape because he got sent there to try to
change.

Calvin and Hobbes is a VERY funny story. If you like funny
comics you have to get Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin and Hobbes
is a book about Calvin and Hobbes! Hobbes is a stuffed tiger
that Calvin imagines is a real tiger. Calvin is a grade 1 student
who has an incredible imagination. Sometimes it takes place
in the classroom or in his house or yard. This book is perfect
for grades 3 and up.

The Phoenix of Destiny is a compelling story. It is
placed in the Kingdom of Fantasy. It is a book for ages 7‐100.
Geronimo meets friends on this journey. He is trying to get
things for “Blossom”. He goes to the most dangerous places
in the kingdom. The queen has forbidden almost everyone to
go with the knight.

The book Minecraft is a book of tips for using this
computer‐based game. It shows step by step instructions so
that you will be a master at building houses, ships, and roller
coasters. It also shows the difficulty of the structures plus it
shows you how to craft stuff. This book is for ages 9 and up.

Touching Spirit Bear is an awesome story. It takes
place in Minneapolis, Minnesota and an island in Alaska. The
characters are Cole, Mom, Dad, Peter, Garvey, Edwin, and
Peter’s lawyer. Cole goes to the island by himself and touches
the spirit bear and comes back with claw marks from the bear.
Cole gets mad often. He is learning to change by going in the
lake every morning and rolling a rock to the bottom of the
hill. This book is perfect for ages 10 and up.

Foundation event
inspires members to
think big
Members of the Christian School Foundation
got top expertise from a fundraising leader at a
recent development event.
Tony Kamphuis, NACE’s executive director, joined about
a dozen other member schools at the invitation-only
roundtable, which featured advice from Henry Contant, the
recently retired executive director of the Society of Christian
Schools of British Columbia.
After decades of work as a fundraiser and fundraising
consultant for Christian schools around the world, Contant
said Christian schools have a great story to tell.
“Raising funds should grow out of vison and mission,” said
Contant, who has led 19 successful capital campaigns during
the past 21 years. A good campaign rekindles the mission and
vision of a school.
Participants at the event said it was excellent.
“Some of the ideas that were shared were very helpful,”
Kamphuis said. “We will be implementing some of them in our
fall drive.”
“My idea of a good event is that I take away at least one or
two good ideas that we can use in our local context,” agreed
George Petrusma, principal of John Knox Christian School in
Oakville.

“It was encouraging and motivating,” agreed Paula Stubbert,
director of development at John Knox Oakville.
After Contant’s presentation, Foundation executive director
Michael VanPelt led participants in a discussion on what works
and what doesn’t, which Paul Branan of Woodland Christian
School said provided “some good thoughts and answers.”
Making expert advice and resources available to NACE and
other member schools is one of the main tasks of the Christian
School Foundation.
The event also served as a way for member schools to tell the
Foundation what they are looking for as they seek to meet
their financial goals, said VanPelt. “Help us think through these
things and we will put them to work tomorrow.”
People who support the cause of Christian education will feel
joy, Contant said, “when they know how our Christian school
is changing the lives of children for the kingdom and for
eternity.”
