From the Desk of Club General Manager
Cathy Matthews-Kane
Greetings Country Club Members,
I can’t believe it is September already! Where did the summer go? It
seems like yesterday the school bell tolled and graduations were upon us,
and now it is September!
August was a great month at the Club, and it was nice to see many of you at the Club Birthday and
the Concerts Under the Stars. The weather is perfect for golf, the course is in fabulous shape, and
outdoor tennis is superb at these temperatures. The Aquatics Center is still open, if you like
tranquility and peace, the beach is a nice place to catch it this month!
The weather is changing, but we are not done with summer! We have the Air Show to kick off
Labor Day weekend, new tennis and fitness programming, and we are opening our Game Room at
the Clubhouse. The pool tables, pin ball, arcade games, and WII’s will be a gathering place for
members young and young at heart.
Pineview Grille changed hours in September. It is closed on Monday’s and Tuesday’s. Look for
\]
special theme nights like Burger Nights, Taco Thursday’s and more. We hope you come out to
support these new specials at the Pineview.
Thank you again for your support and I look forward to seeing you at the Club. Please do not
hesitate to contact me if I can enhance your membership in any way.
Sincerely,
Cathy

August was a fairly busy month for the Golf Operation as we said goodbye to Arick Zeigel who left us to
join The Bishopsgate Academy as an instructor (hope he’s liking the hospitable humidity) and celebrated
the promotion of Alex Calleja to First Assistant Professional. The course stood up to a good amount of
rain thanks to Glenn and his staff and to you, our members, for doing your part to keep our fabulous
facility in phenomenal conditions.
As we look forward to September, we expect great conditions, excellent weather, plenty of events and lots
of great golf. Please stop by the Golf Shop to pick up a copy of the “busy-day” calendar so you can plan
your rounds in advance.
As we start to bid farewell to the dog days of summer, it’s never too early to start thinking about that special someone (or even yourself) for the holidays. Our team is here to assist you with all of your apparel
and equipment needs and will be happy to special order just the right items to assure a wonderful Holiday
season.
\]
See you in the fairway!
Darin
Congratulations!
Please join us in celebrating another milestone in the history of The Country Club of Colorado. We witnessed greatness in the month of August as Bob and Nikki Athey swept the Club Championships. Nikki
started the “Athey-Slam” by claiming the crown in the Ladies Club Championship and Bob finished the
Slam by recording individual victories in the Men’s Club and Men’s Senior Club Championships. For
good measure they also stole the show in the Couples Club
Championship. Just a hunch, but they may be a good choice for
next year’s member-member or other team events that are
upcoming across the state.
Women’s Club Champion: Nikki Athey
Senior Champion: Bob Athey
Couples Championship
Gross Champions: Bob and Nikki Athey
Net Champions: Mike and Patty Northern
Men’s Club Champion: Bob Athey

Golfers Invited!
The 2015 Majure Cup
For those of you that have not been a part of the annual event called The Majure Cup, I invite you
to take a light-hearted moment and read the history and information about this lively confrontation
between two factions. Begin with the Original Proclamation and then the Proclamation 2004, in
order to get the full impact of what has been taking place and will continue to take place annually
during the month of September.
After years of refereeing the confrontations between the Homesteaders and Cattlemen, nothing has
yet been decided. They continue to confront each other on the hallowed ground we call the golf
course to try and determine a solution to their historical feud with each other.
It will happen again in September of 2015 and my census indicates that our population has increased with an equal number representing both sides. As referee, I must ask that if any man wants
to take a position and let his stroke be recognized, please contact me at your earliest convenience.
When all interested parties have registered, there will be a gathering of all participants’ group action to set forth the ground rules and determine the competitive pairings.
\]
If you would like to participate in the 2015 confrontation between the Homesteader’s and the
Cattlemen, please contact the Golf Staff no later than Wednesday, September 9.

Golf Maintenance Update
The golf course continues to look and play beautifully. We’ve had a nice summer for moisture and
temperatures. However, that moisture seems to come in bunches and the flooding rains, like Sunday
July 26, continue to cause cleanup and bunker damage issues. This particular event brought us about
1” of rain in 1 hour followed by some significant hail. The hail pitted the greens and shredded some
of our flowers and trees. Still, we escaped pretty easily and with some topdressing this week and
greens rolling we should be back to great conditions quickly.
Ongoing major work includes fertilizing the roughs with compost. Although this does not smell that
great it is wonderful for the course. It is organic, slow releasing and should help with our clay soils
and uneven growth. We also have hopes that the geese may hate it and avoid some of the areas they
like to frequent. Maybe it will smell and taste bad enough to keep them off. We will see and keep our
fingers crossed.
The final major work for the late summer and fall will be the soil and sod work on #10 fairway. We’ve installed drainage in and around the big waste bunker and it’s working. Now we have to
smooth out the ground under repair and sod the area. Things on this hole should look dramatically
different by next spring.
That’s all for now! Enjoy the rest of the summer and encourage everyone to come out and play the
course.

With thanks to all our members and guests,
