Tickets are now going fast for the Telluride Film Festival! Through the generous
support of Champaign Surplus, and Ira & Lynn Wactel, the Telluride Film Festival will be
held on Tuesday, March 9, 2009 at 7:00 pm at the Parkland College Theatre in
Champaign.
The Film Festival has become an annual tradition for Prairielands Council.
Champaign Surplus brings to the area the finest outdoor adventure and environmental films
for just one night. The night of films is a great Troop activity, family activity or just an
enjoyable night any outdoor or film buff.
Tickets are $10.00 for General Admission or $40.00 for VIP/Benefactor tickets.
Benefactor tickets include reserved prime seating and a special gift bag.
You can pick up your tickets today at the Raymond Lee Scout Service Center or at
Champaign Surplus in Champaign. All proceeds from the Film Festival go to support the
outdoor programs of Prairielands Council.

100th Anniversary Brings Back “Scouting for Food”
Once Scouting’s best example of “Do A Good Turn Daily”, Scouting for Food was very popular in the 1990’s. As
part of the 100th Anniversary this great service to the community is returning in April. In conjunction with the Eastern
Illinois Foodbank, Prairielands Council will conduct a council-wide food drive next month. The Eastern Illinois Food Bank
and our council serve a similar geographic area, so this is a great fit for all of our communities. The Eastern Illinois
Foodbank serves food panties, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, youth activity programs and more throughout the area.

Planning is now underway for the
2010 Illini Jamboree featuring the Fighting
Illini against interstate rival Northern
Illinois.
The Jamboree will be held
September 17-19, 2010.
John Marquardt has is back as
Chairman of this huge event along with a
team of dedicated volunteers who make
this one of the premier Scouting events in
the Midwest.
“We’re looking to shake things up a
little bit for the 100th Anniversary,” says
Marquardt. “We are looking to make it
bigger and better than ever!”
More details will be announced in
the coming weeks but start planning now
to be part of the council’s biggest annual
event!

During the week of April 12-18 Packs, Troops, and Crews will deliver flyers to home in
their community. The flyers will be available to units at the March Roundtables.
During the week of April 19-24, the units will return the homes and collect the food
donations. Units in Champaign-Urbana will deliver the donations directly to the
Eastern Illinois Foodbank or a Schuncks or IGA food store. Outlining units can drop
their food off at local IGA stores.

Drake Spring Marksmanship Challenge
Test your aim for trophies and prizes at the new Nogle Shooting Sports area on
Saturday, March 27th, 2010 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Camp Robert Drake. The Spring
Marksmanship Challenge is open to all Boy Scouts and Venturers interested in testing their
marksmanship abilities in several shooting disciplines. Participants must register for this
competition as either a Boy Scout (age 11–18) or Venturer (age 14-20 Coed) to compete for
the 30 total awards (Top 5 in each category and age group). Participants will be allowed one
practice round and then shoot for a score in any or all events they wish to compete
in. Events will be 20 yard Archery, 50 yard Small Bore Rifle and Trap / Shotgun. The $15
fee includes use of Camp shooting equipment, ammunition, prizes, snacks and
awards. Please do not bring personal shooting equipment.

Bridal Veil Falls :Back k to the Public For Erik Weihenmayer, a blind man, and
Chad Jukes, an amputee,to ice climb is a feat in itself. To summit Telluride’s Bridal Veil
Falls,the highest free-falling waterfall in Colorado, is even more notable. That the Trust
for Public Lands finally succeeded in opening thefalls to the public after innumerable
challenges and setbacks, seems worthy of celebration. This short film tells both stories.
Look to the Ground Imagine riding your mountain bike at full speed down a steep
serpentine trail at night when the moon is a dim sliver that slips in and out of clouds, its
vague light often lost in shadow. And now imagine that you’re wearing shades. Just such
a scenario describes much of Bobby McMullen’s life: He is a blind mountain biker.
Look to the Ground is his story.
The Sharp End In the world of climbing, “the sharp end” is the technical term todescribe the end of the belay rope that is tied to a lead

Drift : Bahamas After 50 years as a guide, “Bonefish” Charlie Smith has become synonymous with bonefish fishing in the Bahamas.

SAMSARA In the heart of the lofty, knife-sharp Vindhya Mountains in India sits a 6,500-foot rock route that resembles a massive shark
fin and rises from the ocean of crags. This fin, which is twice as long as anything on El Capitan and just as steep, has denied many
notable climbers from reaching its summit. In Samsara —which means “wheel of suffering” — all-star climbing team Conrad Anker, Jimmy
Chin and Renan Ozturk set out to attempt a first ascent. Directed by Ozturk, the film is woven together with art, journal excerpts and still

The Hidden Life of the Burrowing Owl A bit twisted,

Chickens of the Sea “This is serious business to a prairie chicken… It’s hard work defending those borders.” Prairie chickens live a
hard frontier life, but they aren’t opposed to a little fun — and maybe even some dancing.
The Red Helmet In a dark and drab world, a fearful young child discovers a bright red helmet that transforms everything into
adventures of all kind.

Community Gala Kicks-off 100th Anniversary Celebration
Prairielands Council kicked off the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America in style with a community wide Gala held on
Saturday, February 13 at the Holiday Inn in Urbana. Hosted by Master of Ceremonies Rev. Terry Harter (Eagle Scout 1964) the
evening was opened with a flag ceremony by Explorer Post 207 chartered by the City of Champaign Fire Department. Following
comments by local council leadership, the evening was highlighted by featured speaker Art Mortvedt, and International Explorer who
shared his tales of exploring both the North Pole and South Pole. Following his presentation, Rev. Harter quipped that during
Mortvedt’s presentation he had heard of “57 ways to die”!
The evening also included special recognition of Eagle Scouts of which 70 were present ranging in Scouting tenure from 20 to
over 60 years. Special presentations were also made to community members who have made significant contributions to the council
including: The Atkins Group, The Lee Family Foundation, the Myers Family, the Nogle Family, Champaign Surplus and others.

Council Camporee set for April 30-May 2, 2010
A Prairielands Council-wide Camporee is planned as part of the year-long celebration of
the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.
The Camporee will be held April 30-May 2, 2010 at Kennekuk County Park near Danville,
Illinois. The event is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers and Girl Scouts. The event is
being planned and hosted by Troop 365 in Danville. Co-Chairs are Doug Appleby and Tim Carter.
The program for the weekend includes “Baden Powell Challenge (Scout Skills)” a variety of elective activities, camp-wide
programs and evening events ‘under the big top’.
Baden Powell Challenge
Knots & Lashings, First Aid, Tracking & Astronomy. Participants will have the chance to earn the segments of a giant back patch by
completing each challenge.
Tons of Elective Fun
Chose from a long list of elective activities. Each unit will get to choose two….first come, first choices! So register early!!!
Camp-Wide Programs
A number of open activities will run all day Saturday. Earn a patch by visiting the historic buildings; add to the giant Popsicle stick art
project; play Frisbee Golf or build a rocket. There will be plenty to do all day long!!!
Evening Programs
Join us under the Big Top where you will find a program of fun, educations and music as we celebrate 100 years of the Boy Scouts of
America!!
A unit fee is of $25.00 is due to make the initial reservation. The total registration of $25.00 per person is due to the Raymond Lee
Scout Service Center by Friday, April16, 2010.

2010 Camp Promotion and Service Award for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers
Colorful “going green” emblems will be available for youth and adult leaders who assist in the promotion, maintenance, and
development of Camp Robert Drake. The Illini Lodge Service Corps has adopted a special recognition known as the Emerald Honor for Cub
Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and leaders that help improve Camp Drake grounds and facilities in 2010. By participating in three
camp-related tasks, every youth and leader can earn a special Emerald Honor patch. To qualify, the applicant must participate in each of
the three categories. Please have a member of the Illini Lodge Service Corps initial the completed tasks.

Attend a Camp Drake Tool Time Work Day
Participate in a unit led “summer camp promotional night” for youth and parents
Help provide service to Camp Drake through one of the selected options
Special Camp Drake patches can be earned by the youth and adult leaders. The individual must qualify by completing the following three
tasks and submitting this application by August 30, 2010. The patch will be presented by Illini Lodge to recipients attending summer camps
and other events in the summer. There is no cost for the emblems, courtesy of the Order of the Arrow.
Wilderness First Aid Training at Camp Drake: Saturday, March 27 & 28
American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Basic Course is THE course for those who work, live, or play in remote areas. This 16 hour
course uses a combination of classroom instruction, skills practice and role play to learn the response steps and treatment of injuries in a delayed-help situation. The course will be held at Camp Drake on Saturday, March 27 beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday and concluding at 4:30
pm on Sunday. The fee for the course is $125 which includes meals, camping and course materials. WFA certification is good for 3 years
and meets BSA high adventure requirements. Registration is due March 12, 2010 at the Service Center. For more information contact Gabrielle Martin at [email protected].

Pinewood Council 2010 Pinewood Derby Championships
The fastest wood on earth will be racing at the
Pinewood Derby Championships at Judah Christian
School in Champaign on Saturday, April 10. There
will be two competitions at the Council Pinewood
Derby Championships: a race division for the
downhill speedsters and show division for the
good-looking craftsmanship. Each Cub Scout Pack
is allowed to send 6 Cub scouts in each division, a
total of 12 boys per Pack. If a Cub scout is a Pack
winner in both divisions, he must select only one
division to participate in the Council Pinewood Derby Championships. The registration fee
for each Cub Scout is $6.00.
Registration is due to the Raymond Lee Scout Service Center by Friday, April 3. Be
sure to follow the guidelines for the Race Car Specifications. Please register as a Pack—do
not send individual registrations. Send registration and appropriate fees to: Boy Scouts of

Cub Scout Knights Action
The chivalry of knighthood may visit the vestiges of your hallowed pack during every
dragon
-slaying opportunity on the Cub Scout Adventure Camp scene. The theme of "Starry Knights of the Salt
Fork" will offer an exciting array of entertaining activities and educational games for the different Cub
Camp activities coming this July. Cub Scouts and leaders experience all kinds of medieval fair through a
series of “knightly” programs. Campers can bring their own camping gear, but tents and cots will be provided, as needed. See the Cub Scout Adventure Camp Leader Guide, also known as “The Lantern”, for
added details. The dates include: Blue session-July 7-10 or Gold session-July 25-28. The schedule for
the opening day begins at 1:00 pm. Contact your district executive to bring the fun and information of
Cub Camp King and his Court to your meeting location to promote Cub Scout Adventure Camp.

Wooden Nickels for Camp Drake Cub Campers
Illini Lodge Cub Relations Chair Willie Campbell is looking to help encourage
Cub Scouts to attend Camp Drake this summer. As a part of the Order of the Arrow’s
mission to instill outdoor ideals in young people, the local Brotherhood of Cheerful
Service is providing a fun incentive to any Cub Scout at Camp Drake. Commemorative
wooden nickels are available for distribution to packs that have signed up to attend
Family Fun Fest, Parent n’ Pal and Cub Scout Adventure Camp in 2010. Bring the
wooden nickels to camp and receive treats from the Trading Post. Cub Packs of the
Prairielands Council who are planning to attend during the 2010 Camp Drake season
should schedule a camp promotional chat at a pack meeting in March or April. To

Family Fun Fest Thrills
Mark your calendars now for early June when THE outdoor adventure of the summer will take place. FFF
Program Director Stewart McConnell has made June 4-6, 2010 at Camp Drake the place to be for a myriad of Olympic
challenges for all ages of campers. Camp Robert Drake provides the opportunity for youth and adults to enjoy Shooting
Sports, Fishing, Boating and Camping Skills. Participants are eligible to camp both nights, one night, or just attend the
events on Saturday. Family Fun Fest campers are asked to bring their own camping equipment. The program areas will
be open Saturday morning and afternoon for campers to enjoy at their own pace.
Trail Tromp means Spring is Here!!
If you think positive, the snow will be gone by then and your hike through the scenic forest will be warm and toasty on the banks of the Salt
Fork River. Blaze the trail through the woods at the annual Trail Tromp hiking day at Camp Robert Drake on March 27th. The Trail Tromp
hiking day begins at 9:00 am and is hosted by Illini Lodge of the Order of the Arrow for all Scouts and their friends and families. Everyone
has the option to purchase trail memorabilia, depending on their hiking efforts and service options. No registration is needed, but plan
now to march in March.
Parent & Pal: Beware the Giant Lizards!
In 2010, the Parent n’ Pal Weekend is exploring the pre-historic theme at
Camp Robert Drake on the last weekend of July. Parent n’ Pal is focused on an
adult/youth partnership as campers will enjoy “the Age of the Dinosaur” in pairs
throughout Camp Drake. The adult/youth partnership will enjoy nature-finding
experiences in pairs throughout backwoods events at Camp Drake. Parent/son
combinations will be able to choose their own activities at their own pace. Two
entertaining evening campfires will provide nighttime fellowship, as well as an
evening swimming option on Saturday. Campers can bring their own equipment,
but tents and cots will be provided, if needed. The Parent & Pal Weekend will offer
additional advancement opportunities along with the special attention that each
pair will receive at camp. Plan to attend on Friday, July 30 to Sunday, August
1st, 2010. The cost is $60.00 per pair $15.00 for each additional parent or Cub Scout brother(s). Programs have a free schedule so
parent/son pairs can participate in the activities at their own pace. Open areas include swimming, boating, archery, and BB gun shooting. Demonstration areas will be set in outdoor skills and fishing. In the afternoon, nature games and skills sessions provide fun and

Cub Scouts will be able to select their
experience of two different outdoor sessions on
Saturday, April 24th. The Basic Adult Leader
Outdoor Orientation will provide a gorgeous
overview of all things camping for Cub Scout
packs. The Outdoor Webelos Leader course
focuses on guiding the fourth and fifth grade
Cub Scouts through the camping requirements
and outdoor skills required for the Webelos
level.

Outdoor Skills Training Weekend
Get your taxes in early so you can attend the OLST. The extended course for Outdoor Leader Skills Training is from Friday,
April 23rd to Sunday, April 25th focusing on teaching camping skills and administration to Boy Scout and Venturing adult leaders.
This O.L.S. course will guide participants through the basics of a wide variety of backwoods techniques, as well as how to prepare
your youth for their camping adventures. Bring a contingent from your unit, in order to improve your camping experience for yourself
and your youth.

Cub Camp Seminar
Your brand new 2010 Cub Camp packets are
finished and ready for you to use to get your Scouts and
their families excited and informed about the many summer
activities that we have coming up . The packets have nearly
40 documents printed as well as on disc to answer any
questions and give you the tools that you need to make
your summer time plans as easy as possible to make
happen. Start now….don’t wait….while your leaders and
families still have plenty of time to prepare. The packet
includes monthly meeting recommendations and tools.
Remember that Cub Scouts who participate in summer
camps and activities are three times more likely to stay in
the program. Your district executive or unit commissioner
will get your packets to you if you do not already have
them.
During a simple two-hour camping discussion, all of your Cub
Camp questions will be answered on Saturday morning, March 27th,
beginning at 9:30 am in the Training Center at Camp Robert
Drake. Cub Camping experts will be available to review the various
Cub Camping options in the Prairielands Council this summer, as well
as provide a tour of the finest BSA camping facility on the banks of the
Salt Fork River. From 9:30 to 10:30 am, administrative and program
details will be shared as a part of an informal Q&A session. Following
the indoor orientation will be a tour of the campsites, program areas,
and other essential locations for Cub Campers at Camp Drake this
summer. All attendees should review the Cub Camp materials in their
Cub Camping packets before their arrival. This event is scheduled at
the same time as the Trail Tromp, with a guided hike led for interested
youth. No registration fee is required, but please pre-register by

The Cub Scout sign (the index and middle fingers extended in a V shape) symbolized the ears of an alert
wolf. It replaced the American Indian “how” sign, which was considered to look too much like the Nazi

Boy Scout News……. Tool Time Work Day in March
The first workday of the spring will require plenty of outdoor tools to help clear campsites
and repair trails. On Saturday, March 20th, all volunteers are encouraged to attend the Tool Time
Work Day and begin the physical preparations for the BSA’s 100th anniversary season at Camp
Drake. Please bring rakes, loppers, handsaws and chainsaws to help with cleaning up the useable
areas of camp. The day will begin with job assignments at 9:00 am at the north end of the
Maintenance Shed. Lunch will be provided to all participants at 12:15 pm, with a closing
recognition program at 3:00 pm. All Tool Time volunteers will receive a warm token of appreciation
at the closing program at the Trading Post.
Elections Notification
All troop/team leaders should review their materials to prepare for the election requirements. Whether you plan to conduct the
election on your own or bring in assistance from your chapter, it is important to designate the date of your election and announce it to the
unit as early as possible. Please inform your Scouts early about the date of your OA election, in order for Scouts with the 2nd Class
rank to focus on completion of the eligibility requirements. Contact your OA chapter leadership, if you need assistance in conducting
the election in your troop/team.
Film Fest Helps Scouts Get to Camp
Join the night-time fun of the Telluride Mountain Film Fest and receive special moon-lit bonuses at Camp Robert Drake this
summer. Any 8 Boy Scouts from the same troop who attend the Film Fest at the Parkland College Theatre on Tuesday, March 9th will be
awarded a series of special opportunities during their visit to summer camp. If your patrol qualifies for the Night Owl Award, you will receive
under the stars thrills at Camp Drake during the summer of 2010. ALL THIS FUN AND YOU HELP SEND SCOUTS IN NEED TO CAMP
DRAKE. All proceeds from the Telluride Mountain Film Festival go to the camp scholarship programs of the Prairielands Council, which is
awarded to dozens of Scouts each summer.

celebration of the BSA Camp Drake wooden nickels to all
prospective Camp Drake participants at promotional events
throughout the spring. . Contact your friendly Chapter Chief to
schedule your coin collection program. Prairielands Council
troops who conduct their own Camp Promotional night will
receive “wooden nickels” for their Scouts to receive special
benefits during the summer. The wooden nickels will be
distributed throughout the spring to encourage camp
attendance during the summer of 2010. All Scouts bringing
wooden nickels to Camp Drake will be eligible for perks in the
Trading Post:
Each troop is encouraged to host a Camp Drake Promotional
Program for Scouts and parents this spring. The Illini Lodge Camp
Promotions Team has created a new DVD presentation of exciting camp
traditions to provide an entertaining view of the thrills of summer camp.
Your troop can choose to conduct the Camp Drake Promotional Program
on your own or invite a celebrity, such as a District Camping Committee
member or a Camp Promotions Team specialist. A new camp promotions packet allows your troop to bring the Promotional action of Camp
Drake to your troop meeting. The Promotion Information Packet will
include a game, program literature, and promotional handouts.
Green Shirt for each Troop Representative
Join the Illini Lodge Camp Promotions Team and get a stylish garment for summer attire. Each troop is encouraged to assign a
Boy Scout to join the Green Shirt Gang and serve as the host for the Camp Promotional efforts. This special member joins the Illini
Lodge Camp Promotions Team as the troop liaison and serves as the youth contact point for all Camp Drake highlights. It is beneficial if
this youth is the OA Troop Representative, but not mandatory. If the troop has no active OA members, any interested and enthusiastic
Scout can earn a green shirt. The duties of a Green Shirt Gang Promotions Team Member will be to work with the troop leadership to
prepare for a fun and informational camp promotion night for as many Scouts and parents as possible! The responsibilities will include
determining who the target audience will attend, set date & time for the meeting, promote attendance at your Camp Promotions Night,
secure materials and manpower for a great promotion, and then conduct a fun and exciting Camp Promotions Night!

Recruit New Scouts to COMPASS Day
I
f used correctly, a compass will direct your travel to an important destination. If a boy has the opportunity to experience Boy
Scouting, he will gain life-long ideals from the ethics of our Oath and Law, the care of our natural world, and the involvement in citizenship
and service. Any new Boy Scout can get a quick taste of the summer camping life on Saturday, March 27th at COMPASS Day. This
half-day experience allows troop leaders and parents to participate in summer camp related activities such as fishing and archery, while
touring the program areas of Camp Drake.

ll troops should use this opportunity to invite prospective fifth grade and older boys to enjoy a free outdoor activity. This is a great
chance for any possible Boy Scout age members to sample the fun of Camp Drake before making the big weeklong commitment. As a
method of recruitment, troops could reward current Boy Scouts for bringing a buddy to COMPASS Day and gaining an extra BSA
100th Anniversary day of excitement. Certain merit badge requirements will be completed at this event. All new Boy Scouts in
attendance will receive a compass at the closing ceremony.

BALOO, Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation, is for Cub Scout leaders. It is BSA policy that for any Pack camping without a BALOOtrained leader along, your Scout Insurance is not in force. Keeping your Scouts safe, while enjoying the camping experience, is an
important part of any Cub Leader’s responsibility.
OWL for Webelos Leaders; the Outdoor Webelos Leader course focuses on the outdoor activity badges available to 4th and 5th grade
Webelos, and teaches you what you need to know in order to teach those four Activity Badges. This is a fun class that will help you inject
a lot of fun into your instruction, back with your Den.
Outdoor Leader Skills Training (OLST) is a required course for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to be fully “Trained” leaders.
This is an excellent course for other adults who will be leading camping trips with Boy Scout age youth or older. We begin Friday night
(around 7 pm) and typically last until 2 pm Sunday. This is a learn-by-doing course covering all outdoor Boy Scout skills thru 1st Class;
campsite selection, knots, wood tools (axe, saw, & knife), fires, outdoor cooking, first aid, plant & animal identification, backpacking &
hiking, map & compass, Leave-No-Trace camping, and campfire programs. You will also camp with a “patrol” of other adults.

neckerchief? Yes, the tradition of Wood Badge goes back 90 years, to when Baden Powell himself
taught the first course in 1919. Come celebrate the history and traditions of Wood Badge, as
Decatur’s Lincoln Trails Council hosts a course at Rhodes France Scout Reservation (near Pana, Il.)
September 24-26 and October 15-17, 2010.

Leave No Trace Trainer (new in 2010)
The Leave No Trace Trainer specializes in teaching Leave No Trace principles and ensuring that the troop follows these
principles on outings. He can also help Scouts earn the Leave No Trace award. He should have a thorough understanding of and
commitment to Leave No Trace. Ideally, he should have completed Leave No Trace. The new statement follows:
Leave No Trace Trainer
The troop Leave No Trace Trainer teaches members the principles of Leave No Trace, improves Scouts’ outdoor ethics
decision making skills, that helps minimize the impact on the land. The senior patrol leader may appoint a Scout, 14 years or older,
who has successfully completed the official 16-hour Leave No Trace Trainer training course to serve as the troop Leave No Trace
Trainer. A Scout under the age of 14, or who has not completed Leave No Trace Trainer training may serve as an Instructor teaching
Leave No Trace skills until he obtains the necessary training.
There are two LNT Trainings coming up in April!! The first one will be help on April 9-11th at Camp Robert Drake. By taking
this class, you will become a LNT trainer to run your own workshops teaching low-impact camping and hiking using LNT principles.
This is your opportunity to show others that our Mother Earth needs some TLC and we are the ones to give it. Learn everything you
need about Leave No Trace to teach others. This class is open to adult Scouters and Scouts 14 yr and older (if accompanied by a
paid responsible adult). This course is required for Boy scouts who want the LNT Trainer position.
The second training will be on April 10th at Camp Robert Drake. This is only a 3 hours training and you will learn the basic
principles of Leave No Trace. You will also learn the new BSA Boy Scout rank advancement requirements that require elements of
LNT. This class will help you provide basic LNT information to your Scouts. The principles apply to Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and
Venturers. This class is open to everyone!

10th Annual Prairielands Training College – a Huge Success
More than 100 people took advantage of the great training at Prairielands Training College on Feb. 13. Over
50 classes were offered on a wide variety of topics. We can’t offer enough thanks to Brian Brauer for all his work as
the chair of the event. He spent countless hours on all the details and it went off without a hitch. Brian Walker is the
man who managed the online registration program. That has proven to be a great help in getting people into the
classes they want – thanks Brian! Bill Taylor, Debby Beer and their Venturing Crew 27 provided lunch. Jerry
Watzlawick and Mitchell Brauer were a tremendous help at registration. They stayed the entire day to help instructors as they arrived
and to answer questions. Registration was also aided by Deanna Williams and Laurie Brauer. A thanks to all those on the training
committee who also helped: Paul Lang, Flint Pellett, Brian Minsker, Ralph Kuchenbrod and Ellen Kuchenbrod. Make plans now to
attend PTC 2011 on Feb. 12. The committee will be meeting soon to start work on next year so it promises to be great!

Three dedicated Scouters were recognized with the council’s highest honor, the Silver Beaver Award at the
February 27. Congratulations to Karen Stack, Ed Schultz, and Brian Walker.
Recognition Dinner on
Karen Stack: Den Leader, Assistant Scoutmaster, District Training Chair
Karen Stack began her scouting activities as a Den Leader with Pack 3395 of the 1st Presbyterian Church,
Saginaw Michigan, Lake Huron Area Council for 4 years. Upon moving to Illinois, she continued her scouting career
as the Arthur Pack 74’s Committee Chair for 3 years and as Assistant Scoutmaster for Arthur’s Troop 74 for 6 years
during which time she served as a troop committee member for 1 year. Karen has continued with the position of
Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 88 in Arcola for the last 5 years to present.
Along with serving as Assistant Scoutmaster for Arcola’s Troop 88, Karen is a Prairie Fire District Committee Member and
Merit Badge Counselor. Karen has also served the Prairie Fire District on Roundtable Staff for 5 years and as the District Training
Committee Chair for 2 years. Karen has served on the Prairieland’s Council Klondike Derby committee, the Illini Jamboree Committee,
as a 75th Anniversary Camporee volunteer, as a merit badge counselor for the Holy Cross and LDS merit badge seminar as well as
doing adult leader training at those events. Karen is also an active Brotherhood Member of Illini Lodge 55.
In the letter of recommendation received from the Council Vice President of Program, Ralph Kuchenbrod, he stated, “Karen is a
dedicated Scouter who recognizes the importance of training especially at the unit level. Over the years she has generously given her
time and training talents to countless Scouters.” It is noted that Karen herself has received the Den Leader’s Award, the Scouter’s
Training Round Table Staff Award, and was a Wood Badge Participant in 2009 with pending ticket completion.
For many years, Karen has served as the Prairielands One Stop Training Chairman recruiting and organizing the staff to offer
unique one-day events twice annually providing basic leader training in the three primary Scouting programs. With Karen’s dedication
to leader training and “Can Do” attitude, she initiated “Training Tuesdays” at Camp Drake during resident summer camp. For the past
several summers, Karen has faithfully arrived at camp on Tuesday to offer training to adult leaders who were attending camp as well as
any leader who desired to arrive at camp for training.
To assist leaders in accomplishing the BSA-required Outdoor Leader Specific Training while attending summer camp with their
troop, Karen created a syllabus and received approval to implement a beta-Outdoor Leader Specific Training week at Camp Drake
which was officially offered in 2009 with great success. This proved to be an invaluable service to leaders unable to attend the
conventional training during other times of the year.
Karen is the proud mother of two Eagle Scouts, David and Joshua and a daughter, Amanda./
Professionally, Karen is a computer system programmer living in Arthur, Illinois. She is an active member of the Faith
Lutheran Church of Sullivan, Illinois where she is a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, church organist, and
Church Committee Member.
In her nomination, fellow Scouter and friend, Wally Smith wrote, “Karen always puts others first and is a positive and
upbeat individual who is a joy to be around and to associate with. She treats all and the Scouting program as if it is part of her
immediate family.”

Brian Walker: Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster, District Commissioner
Brian Kay Walker earned his Eagle Scout age the age of 13 and has continued to be active in scouts ever
since. He was elected to the order of the arrow as a youth—and had the unique experience of doing his ordeal at
Camp Spirit Lake on Mount Saint Helens, a camp which was blown up in the volcano a few years later.
Brian
earned the Duty to God, the religious award for the Church of Latter Day Saints, which sponsored his troop in Oregon.
In September 1975, he represented the Boy Scouts at the "Bicentennial Youth Rally" and got to shake hands with
another Eagle Scout, President Gerald R. Ford.
As Scoutmaster of Troop 272 in Veedersburg and has earned the Scoutmaster’s Key, Award of Merit . He was recognized
with the WD Boyce new unit organizer for Venturing Crew 272 of which is he is now advisor.
He has also served as the Many
Streams District commissioner and earned the District award of Merit in 2008. Brian is now the council high adventure chairman.
Technology is one of Brian’s passions. He became a Ham radio operator at the age of 14 and continues to be active in the
national association for amateur radio. He has exposed dozens of scouts to the world of ham radios with the Jamboree on the Air,
speaking to scouts worldwide, including the world headquarters of Scouting in Switzerland and the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort
AP Hill Virginia in 2005. He also helped Scouts talk with astronauts. Brian is a co-founder of the Space Jam event. His technological
efforts have also been used to improve the on-line registration for Scout programs such as Prairielands Training College where he has
also taught such classes as “how to build a winning Pinewood Derby Car”.
Brian is active in the Red Cross chapter in his area as an instructor for Lifeguards, and wilderness first aid. He has been recognized as a “Red Cross Instructor of the Year” in his chapter . He has combined Scouting and the Red Cross training to write grants for
Automated External Defibrillators or AEDs for schools and other public areas in southeast Fountain County. He is a rescue diver and
saved a fellow diver 47 feet down in Antarctica. In the past he has been an NRA certified shotgun, rifle and pistol instructor. He uses
skills learned in the marlinspike course to build a monkey bridge. With this bridge he has supported the Southeast Fountain county
Relay for Life charging 25 cents to cross the bridge, and donating the funds to Relay for life. He also builds relay projects and put up
shelters for others groups as requested. Brian also serves on the committee which promotes and celebrates the historic landmarks of
Fountain County. And he organized a Photo CD preserving images of Scouting In Veedersburg in the 1940’s.
Professionally, Brian supports his scouting habit by selling Computer Software and Search Engine Optimization
Services and he teaches business and Computer Technology classes for Ivy Tech Community College in Terre Haute. He and his wife
Kathy have been married for 21 years and are the proud parents of two Eagle Scouts, Austin and Ryan.
Ed Schultz; Klondike Derby Committee, National Jamboree Leader
Ed Schultz of Tuscola and his wife, JoEllen are the parents of three children, Eddie, Chelsea, and Austen.
Eddie and Austen each earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Ed was involved in Scouting as a boy in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Cheshire, Connecticut and later in
Mahomet, IL. Ed earned the Arrow of Light and achieved the rank of Life Scout. As an adult Scouter Ed has served
Prairielands Council in many capacities including as a Klondike Derby Staff for 6 years, 2001 Okaw District Fall
Camporee “Survivor” Committee and Staff member, and he also has served as Assistant Scoutmaster/Quartermaster
for the Prairielands Council contingent to the 2005 National Jamboree. Ed serves as a member of the Camp Drake Properties
Committee and has been a willing volunteer on work days and during camp at Camp Drake putting his many practical skills to work.
Being a licensed plumber, Ed provided invaluable service following the Big Storm of 2004 at Camp Drake helping with refrigeration after
emergency power acquired following a power outage due to the storm. Ed, also, was instrumental in finding a person to pour the
concrete for the Handicap Accessible Sidewalk for Camp Drake sponsored by Illini Lodge 55
Ed has been active in the Order of the Arrow, serving as an adult advisor for Lodge 55. As an adult he served on the OA
lodge trail committee for the 2005 Camp Drake Trail Tromp day. In 2004, he was inducted as a Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the
Arrow Illini Lodge 55. He and his son Eddie received the honor of being inducted as Vigil Honor Members at the same time.
Ed has served as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 88 in Arcola for ten years and has served as a merit badge counselor for the
plumbing, home repairs, electricity, salesmanship, sports and personal fitness merit badges.

March Meeting talks Tromp!

The highlight of a work day arrives just after halftime, when the dessert tray is rolled out after lunch. That is where the smile
developed for Cheerful Service. Spring cleaning begins on Saturday, March 20th at 9:00 am at the north end of the Tin Shed at Camp

2010. Primary projects will focus on clearing campsites and removing brush, brambles, and leaves from program areas. Basic cleaning will be needed in the cabins and buildings. If you have construction talents, additional projects will be available by contacting Mike
Graham at [email protected] All Tool Time participants should bring their own equipment if possible, but some rakes,
brooms, and loppers are available. A lunch will be served at 12:15 and a recognition distribution will be conducted at the end of the
day at 3:00 pm. Additional service days are planned for April 17th and May 9th.
1st Annual Order of the Arrow Vigil Breakfast
On Saturday February 20, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. the 1st Annual OA Vigil Breakfast was held at the United Methodist Church in
Champaign. There were 22 Vigil members in attendance to enjoy a bountiful breakfast prepared by Bill Taylor and Tony Martin. Vigil
projects were discussed and good time fellowship was had by all. Thanks go to Joe Stull, Vigil Chair, for putting together the Vigil
Breakfast.

Illini Lodge is restructuring itself to give YOU the opportunity to play a large role in its future. The lodge is now divided up into four
chapters based on what used to be the four council districts. The chapters are appropriately called the Illini Chapter, Indian Trails

TROOP OR TEAM REPRESENTATIVE
Illini Lodge 55 is recruiting youth & adult arrowmen to serve in an important role in the lodge. Order of
the Arrow Troop (or Team) Representatives are a youth liaison and his advisor serving between the
local O.A. lodge and his unit. The representatives serve as a communication and program link to the unit
Arrowmen, as well as adult leaders and Scouts who are not presently members of the Order. They do
this in a fashion that strengthens the mission of the lodge and the purpose of the Order. By setting a
good example, they enhance the image of the Order as a service arm to the troop or team.

-Serves as a youth liaison, communication link, and programmatic link between the lodge and the troop/team
-Encourages year-round and resident camping in the troop/team
-Encourages older Scout participation in high adventure programs

I
llini Lodge Activities Chair promises a fun Spring fellowship
with old school flair. The entertaining history of the Boy Scout of
America will excite Illini arrowmen at the Spring Fellowship on May
14-16, 2010 at Camp Robert Drake. The Brotherhood of Cheerful
Fun will celebrate old-school style at our favorite camp with themed
activities, special events, and all kinds of traditional cooking. . The
Saturday night supper show will provide a fanciful feast,
accompanied by BSA everything. Additional events will include
Brotherhood ceremonies, after-hours crackerbarrels, service
preparations for the summer season, and chapter activity
competitions.
Scouts and Scouters who are already Ordeal members
in Lodge 55 may choose to seal their membership in the Order
by completing Brotherhood ceremonies. The ceremony will be
held at the Spring fellowship and during each week of summer
camp. The cost of participating in this ceremony is $18.00.
Please encourage all current Ordeal members to participate in
this important commitment to service. Order of the Arrow camp
staff members will be available to assist your Scouts in preparing
for the requirements for Brotherhood. See your Order of the
Arrow handbook for more information on this topic.

Spring Tiger Recruiting – FIREHOUSE
EVENTS!!!
Spring is the time to get in front of current
kindergarteners and give them the opportunity to experience
the fun and adventure that is Cub Scouting. Our district
membership committee will be working with communities
and pack leaders to set up evening recruiting events at fire
stations in our cities and towns. This has been a big hit and
recruiting aid for us in recent years. If you have pack leaders
with firehouse connections please let us know. We also ask
pack leaders to help us set up boy talks in the schools. Our
team of volunteers will deliver the boy talks and help to run
the events at the firehouses but we need your help to get
things scheduled.
Candy Bars – YUM!
Keep selling those candy bars and help your
Cubs, Scouts or Venturers pay their way to camp. You may
continue to pick up cases of candy bars at the Scout office.
If your unit is not yet selling candy you can still get started.
Continue to sell all through March and beyond if you choose
to. Any unopened cases can be returned by April 9 and all
payments are due by April 12.
Cub Scout Leader Training
Cub Scout leaders have another opportunity to get
training in April. Cub Scout Specific training will be offered
on Saturday April 17. Check for more information online or
at roundtable.
Outdoor Training at Beautiful Camp Drake
April is the time for sunshine and outdoor skills trainings! BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is for Cub Scout
leaders to learn the basics of camping. OWL (Outdoor Webelos Leader) is for Webelos leaders to learn information to teach the
outdoor pins to their Webelos. OLST (Outdoor Leaders Skills Training) is for Boy Scout and Venturing leaders to learn camping skills
plus the skills needed to help Boy Scouts get to first class rank. BALOO training is required for at least one person on any overnight
outing with Cub Scouts. OLST is required for all Boy Scout leaders to be considered “trained”. BALOO & OWL is on April 24 – most of
the day. OLST is April 23-25. Information and registration forms are online at www.prairielandsbsa.org and will be available at

Fund Scouting
It is more important than ever to identify community
members and friendly businesses that can financially
support Scouting in the Prairielands Council. Each
community has Scouting supporters from the past who
have lost touch with the current program. Your
assistance in locating these individuals, such as Eagle
Scouts and their families or unit leaders from past years,
can help restore a supporting connection to the
BSA. Each community in the district is conducting a
Friends of Scouting fund-raising drive. Your help in
locating additional donors will build our financial
development for our future.
Set up your Unit Election/Camp Promo Night for the Spring
Please set up your troop to have a successful unit election/camp promotion effort. Pick a good date on the troop calendar and
announce to all members the significance of this meeting. Will Provin, the Chapter Chief from Gibson City, has been contacting troops
for election details. He is available to provide any assistance to troops to promote camping attendance for Camp Drake this summer.
Anniversary Service Food Drive

Prairielands Council Community Service Project
Coordinator Alyx Parker announced the plans for a councilwide service plan for the 100th Year of Scouting. During the
week of April 12-18, units will deliver flyers to homes in their
community announcing the food drive. Then in the following
week from April 19-24, unit members will return to the homes
and collect the food for donation. Please contact Alyx to get on

Cub Scout Roundtable chair is offering a $25.00 gift
certificate to one of the lucky participants at the March roundtable.
One of the 100th Anniversary treats will feature the special prize
inside, as a part of the commemorative festivities in March.
Centennial celebration ideas will be previewed at the roundtable on
the second Tuesday of the month (3/9) at the Fire Station in Cissna
Park, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. The 100th Year Anniversary landmark
will highlight the presentations. Be there for a historic Scouting
experience!

Fire House Spring Recruiting
The District Recognition Dinner is set for Friday,
April 16th at the Firehouse in Cissna Park. The event will
begin at 6:30 with social fellowship, followed by dinner at 7
p.m. A program will follow the dinner. Recognition to unit
and district Scouters will be awarded for their service to
youth throughout east central Illinois. Plan to bring a table
full of BSA volunteers and supporters to the Indian Trails
District Recognition Dinner.
Make plans now to conduct a Fire House Recruiting night for
new Cub Scouts in April. An easy and fun program can be set up at
your local emergency service agency this spring to entice new families
to join your pack. Set a date now with your fire department volunteers
to organize a simple, but effective Cub Scout orientation for new boys.

Klondike Derby Champions!
Top Scores from the Klondike Derby
Congratulations to the Scouts of the Marksmen Patrol
from Troop 158, chartered to the Chebanse American Legion
and Pack 162, chartered to the Clifton Lions Club. These
talented Scouts earned the championship trophy at the 2010
Prairielands Council Klondike Derby at Camp Robert Drake on
Saturday, January 30th. The Marksmen Patrol scored a total of
117 out of a possible 120 points on the twelve challenging
activities, such as pancake flipping, two-man sawing, and
matchless fire starting. This amazing group of Scouts earned
the highest score out of 47 patrols consisting of 376 Scouts from
throughout the nine counties of Illinois and Indiana in the
Prairielands Council.
In addition to the top score of the 2010 Prairielands
Council Klondike Derby earned by the Marksman Patrol of Troop
158/Pack 162, the powerhouse men of the Green Moose
Patrol from Troop 32 in Paxton earned the third highest score of
112 at Camp Drake on January 30th. The high speed Flaming
Arrows of Troop 29 in Gibson City tied for fifth place with a score
of 105 points. Also in attendance at the “Sam McGee” Klondike
were Da Bears Patrol (91 points) from Troop 30 in Rantoul,
Scorpions Patrol (82 points) from Pack 185 in Gibson
City, the Coyotes Patrol (67 points) from Troop 157 in Cissna
Park, , and the Webelos Patrol (41 points) from Pack 30 in
Rantoul. Congratulations to all the Scouts for attending a fantastic
day of cold-weather thrills and wintertime excitement.
Quality Scouting
Review the requirements for the Centennial Quality Unit honors within your unit leadership group. The entire unit committee
should be aware of the goals for Quality Scouting within your community and strive to achieve a successful program. The Quality Unit
application allows your unit to focus on critical elements of BSA operations such as training, membership, and activity level. As a part
of the rechartering process, please take the time to review your past achievement for 2009 and look to build a better Scouting
opportunity for the youth in your area.
Day Camp Birthday Party
The 100th Anniversary celebration will carry into the Indian Trails Day Camp at Centennial Park in Rankin. It is a great location
name to provide Cub Scouts with the ultimate outdoor opportunity. The dates for the summer event are set for Tuesday, June 8
through Friday, June 11, 2010. The plan is to have a twilight camp, running from 5:30 pm until 8:30 pm, with a special family meal
program on the last night. Plan to conduct a promotional program for your Cub Scouts about the opportunities for summer camping.
District Award of Merit
The Indian Trails Recognitions Committee is looking for nominations to be submitted for the District Award of Merit. The Award
of Merit is presented to top volunteers in Scouting who have made an impact on BSA programs in the Indian Trails territory. The criteria
for the award also take into consideration the noteworthy service to the community outside of Scouting, The nominee’s attitude toward
and cooperation with the district and council are taken into consideration. Applications are available at the March roundtable or upon
request through the Raymond Lee Scout Service Center at (800) 464-7291, ext. 212. Upon completion of the District Award of Merit
nomination, please turn them into District Chairman Fred Bohlmann in Watseka, District Commissioner Vickie Wood in Clifton or the
council service center in Champaign by Thursday, April 1st, 2010.
Cavalcade of Scouting to Show off Outdoor Talents
In commemoration of 100 years of the Boy Scouts of America, the Indian Trails District is hosting the Cavalcade of Scouting to
display the exciting opportunities, the educational values, and the strong history, of the local Scouting movement. Everyone is invited
to discover the fun and tradition of the Indian Trails District and the Boy Scouts of America. The Indian Trails District Cavalcade of
Scouting will be open to the public. This event will be a great celebration of the rich tradition of local Scouting programs and a fantastic
100th birthday party for the BSA. The IT Cavalcade Program Coordinator Kris Hoogstraat reported that several groups have agreed to
attend the event in June with displays from their organization. These groups include: Ducks Unlimited, Iroquois Gobblers, Whitetails
Unlimited, Illinois State Police, Civil War re-enactors, and Revolutionary War re-enactors. Mark your calendar to attend this
monumental event!

Prairielands Council and continue all the great programs scouting has
to offer. Your Pack, Troop, or Crew can also earn incentives for
individual donors as well as your whole unit. There will be sign up
cards available at Roundtable, in the Danville office, or you can call

If you are interested in helping do Family FOS presentations
for your unit or other units, please let me know. I would greatly
appreciate any help.
District Recognition Dinner
The Many Streams District Dinner will be on April 8th at 6:30pm.
This will take place instead of our District Committee Meeting as
well as Roundtable. The dinner will be held at De Coral Buffett at 3355
North Vermilion St. in Danville. You will pay for your meal at the door,
which will be $7.95. There will also be a $5.00 charge for the District
costs for awards. If anyone has any training awards, please turn your
sheets in as soon as possible so we can get those finalized for you.

Cub Scout camp packets have been put together for your pack! These packets are filled with information for you, your Scouts
and their families to get excited and informed about our summer activities coming up for 2010. The packets has nearly 30 documents
printed as well as on disc to answer any questions and give you the tools that you need to make your summer time plans as easy as
possible to make happen. If you have not already received your packet, please make arrangements with me to pick them up!
Training
It is essential that every scout has a trained leader! It is easy, it can be quick, it is fun, and it’ll help make your job easier. There are upcoming training events in the next couple of months, so please sign up. If you want your scouts to study and advance,
you should set the example by doing the same.
Remember that Fast Start, Youth Protection, Hazardous Weather, and This is Scouting training are always available online at
www.olc.scouting.org. Make sure that all new leaders have these trainings completed.

Council Tribute Fund
The Council Tribute Fund is a wonderful way to acknowledge an
important event in a friend or family member’s life, or
remember a lost loved one in a special way. Some of the ways Scouters use the Tribute Fund include:
• To cheer someone up during a time of illness
• To mark an anniversary or birthday
• To honor a graduate
• To recognize a Scout’s advancement to Eagle Scout
• To honor a religious celebration
• To comfort family and friends at the loss of someone
Gifts to the Tribute Fund can be made for any amount and all funds are used to support the Scouting program in
Prairielands Council. An acknowledgement is sent to those being honored, though the amount of the gift is kept strictly
confidential.
To make a gift to the Tribute Fund, simply send a check to the Prairielands Council, P.O. Box 6267, Champaign, IL
61826-6267. Please provide the following information: 1) The name of the person being honored or remembered; 2) The
name and address of the person who should receive acknowledgement of the gift; and 3) your name and address.
