WELCOME SPRING 2016
Spring is my favourite time of year. You’re rewarded with warmer weather and fresh beginnings. When the snow
departs and the brown grass goes away; there’s so much life to be witnessed all around. Spring is the best
springboard to try something new; to gain new ground never seen before.
We can harness the energy that nature is providing us and use this to our advantage. A great idea is to try
something new and simple. A hobby is a great start; an activity that you can use to engage yourself in a new
way. It doesn’t have to be strenuous or difficult. It could be something such as knitting, walks, reading, a new
game, or group event. The premise is that you give you and your body the opportunity to grow and change.
Don’t let this theory be limited to your physical self, and your activities; let this permeate and start to change new
and positive outlooks! When you surround yourself with positivity and a better interpretation of events that happen,
this becomes more; it makes you more. Try telling yourself everyday an affirmation. It can be

I am beautiful.
People look up to me for support and

Today is a new day.
Take this and use it as a means of shifting your outlook. Now, these are just examples, you may find a phrase that
resonates more with you, and that’s ok. This is FOR YOU. No one else. The hardest part is to start, and to believe in

DEAR AVENA
“I love your Vitamin Supreme. I just started taking it a
few days ago. I’ve noticed that my energy has leveled
out and if possible, I feel more balance. I have a
couple concerns though. To start with, and to me this
is strange, but my urine is a different colour. The
other thing is, the first few times I took the product
my ears got hot, my skin warmed up and kind of
went pink like a sunburn.” ~Mary
Thank you for your question!
Awesome question, and don’t worry these symptoms
are extremely common. Let’s talk about the urine
first.
When you supplement and take B vitamins they can
change the colour and smell of your urine to a bright
fluorescent yellow. This is due primarily to Riboflavin
(Vitamin B2). This is perfectly normal and nothing to
be concerned with. The excess Riboflavin is removed
or excreted through your urine. (Think of the same
way that asparagus, which is also rich in this vitamin, makes your urine smell extra strong and the colour is
different.)
The second half of your question, about the skin warming. This happens to some people as well, maybe not
as often as the Riboflavin. What you experienced is called a Niacin Flush. Related to the vitamin it’s named
after (Niacin aka Vitamin B3); the role that this nutrient plays takes place in the blood vessels, specifically it
enlarges them. When the capillaries or small blood vessels near the surface of the skin expand they redden
skin; nothing to be worried about. Truth is it can be a great and useful tool.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the Vitamin Supreme and I hope I’ve helped with the questions
you’ve had.

Recovery & Relief
When accidents happen, they do so indiscriminately. No one is
safe, and for some, there is no preparation that could help. This
is a real world problem for anyone and everyone. Nowadays we
all have to be concerned about our bodies and have to make
sure that they're in shape and well cared for. The question
becomes ‘what do we do when something does happen?’’ What
steps can we take to help the process of recovery?
While it's true that not everyone is a professional athlete that has
multiple therapists on staff to ensure their body is in top shape;
each of us feels the effects of injury the same way. Just like a
downhill biker who can't get back on the bike won’t make their
sponsors too happy, if you miss a few days work, or your mobility
is limited people will notice.
Physical injuries are the easiest for people to see, understand,
and seek help for. Although many put off treatment for far too
long, in the hopes that it’ll ‘go away on it’s own’. Yes, it’s true
some problems may naturally correct themselves, but, it’s
important to understand that each problem has to be assessed
individually.
Most of us don't have to deal with full broken bones or ruptured
spleens, maybe more of a tweaked wrist or rolled ankle. The
severity or grandness of any one type of injury/trauma isn’t the
most important factor to look at, but rather the level of impact it
can have in your everyday life. A Carpal Tunnel injury for an office
worker can be equally as disruptive as a knee injury to a cyclist;
both affect the person's ability to perform their required tasks. This
wrist injury on a new mother may hamper her strength in holding
her own child. Each injury varies on a physical scale but equally
devastating to the individual person.
Day to day we rely heavily on our bodies without much thought; it
isn't until injury or illness happens that we really take notice. In the
same way that we take our cars in for oil changes once the light
comes on, or only book the appointment for vehicle inspection
when the check engine light appears.

We need to work on not just accepting
something that’s not right because it’s
‘not that big of a nuisance’. A small
problem today, left untreated could
cause a bigger problem tomorrow. An
ounce of prevention is worth a pound of
cure.
Our bodies are reactive, and therefore
we need to be too. Don’t forget though, that some
‘injury’ is elective and needed to promote healing
of a larger issue. Take for example surgery;
sometimes this is the best tool that we can use for
long term results. Even then, surgery is a big deal.
Your body needs to heal and recover from surgery
just as it would any other affliction.
The first thing that we need to take into account
with injuries is the inflammation; especially
immediately after the incident or issue arises.
Keeping the area iced as soon as possible after
trauma is going to greatly reduce the
inflammation. When you’re looking at a physical
wound, often pain is caused not just from the
injury itself but the after effects as well. A great
example of this is if you get hit somewhere and a
bruise forms, this area can be tender long after
the initial impact.
Keeping inflammation down can be helped from
internal means as well. Changing your diet being
one factor that a lot of people overlook; a diet
that’s high in acidity will increase inflammation in
the muscles and tissues, which can slow down
daily productivity. Foods that increase
inflammation can vary person to person. Once
you find your ‘triggers’, keeping them out of your
diet can cause a drastic difference. Some common
foods that cause these reactions: animal products,
dairy, wheat, soy, corn, gluten, food dyes & food

colourings, night shades, certain spices,
MSG, caffeine, and carbonated drinks to
name just a few. On the opposite side there
are plenty of foods that can either decrease
inflammation, or cause no change (which is
equally important); foods like ginger,
cilantro, beets, celery, leafy green veggies,
pineapple, turmeric, blueberries and other
antioxidant rich foods. The advantage
moving forward with your diet is you can adjust it as
you go to suit your own needs and requirements. If
you’re nursing a swollen ankle or have poor joints,
consuming foods that will flare up inflammation is
exactly what you want to avoid.

inflammation
What then do foods that keep inflammation to a
minimum have in common? Well they’re plant based,
home grown and loaded with enzymes and other
nutrients. These enzymes are the key. They’re one of
few things that we can supplement in our body along
with food to reduce injuries. A specific enzyme to
highlight is protease (the protein digesting enzyme).
This enzyme does so
much more than
breaks down protein.
Pathogens that
circulate our body are
comprised of protein,
so these enzymes
encourage a natural
immune response.
How does that
translate into English?
It means that these
enzymes can help

for infection both

source of an injury. These enzymes also increase the
amount of white blood cells which are another
immune response. Something else they do is reducing
inflammation. Many people with pain associated with
inflammation (such as achy joints) take enzymes (away
from foods) and have noticed that the
swelling is reduced.
and if you are informed your body needs time to
rest and recover the last thing you should do is go
out and run a marathon (or even half that). It’s
very easy to re-injure yourself by over taxing.
Truthfully many physical injuries are caused by
people over exerting themselves and
not knowing their own body’s limits.
Now knowing that inflammation is part
of a problem, we should see if there are
other factors that contribute. With injury
sometimes the reason is obvious, say you
cut your finger while preparing a meal; not all are so
easy to discern. Just like before when looking at
athletes and the results they get with low inflammation
foods, it’s best to find those who are constantly
working with the body.
Grouping injuries into two subgroups
can help. On one side you could put
all of those internal injuries that still
impact the physical body (broken
bone, arthritis, pulled muscle). The
opposite would be ones that are external and
visible (cuts, some sprains, bruising/hematoma).
From this you can figure out which sub-group
your particular ailment falls, once you know that,
finding a therapist that will help (if needed), can
be a huge advantage moving forward.

If professional athletes who rely on their bodies daily
can notice a difference, this can surely create a
difference in the average Joe as well. Comparatively
for information on what the best gas or oil is for a
sporty car, you’d ask a mechanic or a professional
driver (someone intimately familiar with car engines
and performance). Using the same theory when
seeking details on how to maximize our bodies
response is a good idea, we should be looking to
those who have the knowledge to boost performance.
Whether that be through food, technology, teaching or
therapies. If those ‘in the know’ are noticing the
impact of these foods; it means all of us should take
heed.
Sometimes we don’t ask for opinions because we’re
scared of what these therapists will say. No one likes
to hear that their injury is that severe or will take effort
and time to heal. No one wants to be told by someone
that your injury should take so many weeks to heal;

Those hurts that are visible, are the easiest to see
(literally) and thus the hardest to ignore. In the
perfect world they’re all minor bumps and bruises
that only need small care and time to heal on
their own. We don’t live in a perfect world,
accidents happen and so do injuries. When you
have an an external injury it’s important not to
‘overlook’ what you can see and assume that it’s
minor. Some swelling on an ankle may have the
simple appearance of just a minor bump, but
some sprains can be very severe and cause
problems for weeks or months after the original
injury. Especially if they’re not treated properly,
there's a chance they can heal incorrectly (similar
to a broken bone that won’t heal if not ‘set’). Not
all pain can be relieved on its own, some need
outside help/manipulation to go back to working
condition. The key is to know when you require
help, and when to ask for it. All too often we
suffer in pain and discomfort because that’s
easier than admitting we need assistance. Or
worse, we make excuses as to why we shouldn’t
get the help that would benefit us.
If you have an internal injury that is say muscle
related, then you can guess that a physiotherapist or
massage therapist can help you. They will be able to
help smooth out, relax and stretch out where needed.
Plus, if you find out it’s muscle related then you can
also find out which foods and supplements you can
focus on (Magnesium). When working with the aids
they can also suggest at home things you can try. As

a bad idea to ask or seek help when you’re unsure,
even more so when it comes to your health and your
body.
If we wouldn’t let kidney, liver or digestive problems
continue unchecked and without seeking answers this
same tenacity has to happen too with physical
ailments. Far too often we let slide that our foot hurts,
or your wrist is sore, maybe that every time you go to
the gym you pay for it with stiff/sore muscles for
multiple days after. We have to stop allowing
ourselves and our bodies to suffer needlessly.
If you have a shoulder problem and can’t lift
your arm easily above your head or with
reduced motion, sure you can get by...but
why should you. When you can seek help and
methods that will help bring back range of
motion to where it’s supposed to be. An
office worker may not need the full range of
motion, sure, but what happens if they go
home and their child, partner or friends want
to play basketball. Suddenly you’re losing out
because you’re not investing in your own well
being. What if this isn’t a social thing, what if
you are walking and fall somewhere and

same way we would if it were internal (like
Diabetes, Cancer, fertility issues, headaches,
digestive upset and much more). Allow yourself to
treat the outside with equal importance we give
our insides. We need to be comfortable with our
bodies as they are and as they should be. Not
everyone has the perfect body, or ideal situations.
The goal is to create the best bodies we can with
what we have! There is NO reason you should
allow yourself to be less than 100 percent.
If you’re injured, treat yourself like you’re worth it,
because you are!
Each of us needs to take control of our
bodies and our health, both the physical
outside as well as the all important inside;
we deserve to have the best health and

you’ll need your body, and it’s the only one

Many of us never risk our bodies in
extreme sports, dangerous situations,
or pushing our limits. There are
different forms of low level stresses
that can cause inflammation.
So much of this inflammation often
goes unnoticed until is begins a
serious impairment to our health.
Check out this info-graphic on how
your average office worker

his body.
From palm inflammation to eye

Repetitive stress injuries can happen

It is very important to have a strong

Secrets of injury
HEAL LIKE A TEENAGER
INJURY RECOVERY WITH THE “CLAW”
Have you ever gazed upon a beautiful cliff and mountain side, admiring
it’s beauty and splendor? Well, when someone like Darren Berrecloth
looks, he doesn’t just see the drops, dips, valleys and crevices; he sees
lines. As in how can he ride from the top down to the bottom.
I’m not like that, my job doesn’t depend on it. My performance isn’t
graded on how steep the slope is, how risky the landing. Not even how
fast I can sprint or how far I can run. My job is measured in how many
words I type a minute, and the less errors the better. The opportunity to
dive into the mind and listen to someone who relies on their body in a
totally different way intrigued me. (I’m the girl who doesn’t like to ski or
snowboard because the thought of riding the chairlift scares me..The hills Darren rides his bike down well,
let's just say there’s definitely no chairlifts or easy way up.
What then do you do when this IS your job, more than that, this is something you LOVE.
Downhill Mountain Bike Riding is not a sport for the faint of heart, and it definitely is one that is tough on the
body. As you can imagine hurtling down a hill that most people would have difficulty climbing even with
gear can cause an unimaginable amount of pressure on the body. Remember though, these tricks and
moves are not learned on the first go. The greatest source of ‘wear and tear’ comes not through major
events but training.
The daily grind literally, where there’s bumps, ridges, drops and flips that the body just soaks up. It wasn’t
that long ago when Darren first met his current personal trainer. (A man who could inspire many, and leave
those half his age in his dust.) Through this trainer he found Avena Originals products.

my eyes that I knew nothing about my health,
wellness or how foods impacted my
performance.
I asked Darren: how long have you been using
Avena’s products?
I started out trying a couple products here and
there, that must be about four years ago. It was
really about two years ago that I became more
and more on board and started using the
products on a very regular (daily basis).
I had noted that just recently Darren has had
surgery on his shoulder and I Asked him about
that.
Yeah there's a great doctor down in California
that I Like to go to. He did the surgery and the
follow ups. He’s remarked before that my
healing is always nice and speedy. Two things
that are of big importance when that can mean
sitting out the next competition or riding.
More than that, he found that all those doctor
visits and trainers before had never told him the
basics of nutrition and lifestyle.
When it first came to Avena products and the
healthy lifestyle that we support and encourage,
I asked Darren if there was anything that
surprised him.
I’m of the impression that all athletes are
competitive and they all got where they are from
a mixture of love of their sport and
determination. Nothing, can hamper that more
than injury. Imagine training for months riding
regularly only to find yourself sidelined and
watching the action. I guess in the business
world, that’d almost be like a CEO in his prime
stepping aside for a few months to watch the
business run around themselves; not
participating and hoping that when they come
back they can hop right back in with no trouble
and a smooth transition.
It wasn’t so much of a singular product as it was
the lack of what I knew. I was amazed at how
little time I’d invested and lacking the
information on nutrition was out there. Here i

One of the biggest that stands out even today is
the issue of pH and how it impacts our bodies.
Foods that are acidic and heavy that just wear
your body down from the inside out.
Sure the world of an athlete is a different one,
but injury is injury. The key to not getting
sidelines, is practice, diligence, luck and a little
bit of knowledge. Darren is not unfamiliar with
this pain as he’s been an athlete reliant on his
body for his entire career. For him, injury can be
One of the first things I remember was finding
out about the bodies pH and how that impacts
your health and recovery. I felt like, why am I
just learning about this now? I’ve been a pro
athlete for over 10 years. It really just opened

devastating. Particularly in a sport like MTB where
one wrong move, one bad landing doesn’t just
mean a sprained finger, or bruised rib it can be
cracked and broken bones, concussions and road
burn that covers your body.
Darren since you’ve been taking Avena for awhile
now, any favourite products, ones you don’t leave
home without?
First off travel is always tricky. Especially when it
comes to eating healthy and having good access
to food. I’ve travelled some places where it’s just
local fare that has no name and some water. For
light packing I’ve gone with little ziplock bags
mixed with Enzymes and probiotics and just grab
a few out of the bad each day (like Kameron uses
when he visits out here). I’ll do the same with the
RP3 and E Fusion. The RP3 especially is awesome,
because as long as I Have access to water I’m
know there's’ at least something I can have
(mixing water & rp3). Often I’ve just grabbed a
container dumped some stuff in it with water and
slammed it.
That brings me to my favourite product; the RP3, I
take it everyday. I Make smoothies for myself
regularly and always toss in The RP3 and
E-Fusion. It’s awesome. I like it so much because it
has everything right there that you need (the
enzymes and protein)
I guess, at the end of the day, no matter who you
are or what you do for a living any type of injury
that will ‘sideline’ you doesn’t have to be seen as
the end; merely a bump in the road. The body will
heal, it’s divine by design.

Avena Product Guide
Darren uses Avena’s RP3 as his only protein
supplement, It is easy to digest, offers superior
RP3 - Raw Proteins
protein content, while providing 21grams of the
highest absorbable proteins by combining
protease enzymes and probiotics with the protein.
Try using two servings per day.
P.I.N. Magnesium
Magnesium is an athletes best friend, it allows for
muscle to relax and heal, avoid cramps, and is
used by over 300 processes in your liver. Under
stress your body uses up magnesium rapidly,
often leaving us deficient. PIN Magnesium does
what no other magnesium can do! It delivers the
highest amount of magnesium directly into the
cells through its unique ionic cellular absorption.
Try using one mini bottle of PIN each day.
Enhanced Digestive Enzymes
Avena’s enzymes are known as the best in the
world and for good reason, they have a long track
record of exceeding expectations. Darren uses
enzymes with every meal as he understands the
enzymes are missing in the food he is eating.
Try taking 5 with each meal.
E-Fusion
He combines the E-Fusion with the RP3 to really
boost his natural healing abilities. Vitamin E is a
fantastic healing powerhouse for anyone who is
under stress, both physically or emotionally.
Try three rounded tablespoons twice per day
Proteolytic Probiotics
Darren has expressed his love for these probiotics
many times, Healthy bacteria is a instrument to a
alkaline body and making sure you keep your gut
healthy. Try taking 5 capsules before bed.
