Who We Are
M
osaic
Harmony
is
an
interfaith,
multicultural
community choir of the Washington Metropolitan Area
that draws on the rich heritage of African-American
inspirational music. As a human mosaic, we strive to illustrate
and encourage unity in the midst of diversity, one song at a time.
Committed to the belief that inspirational music can create a
community of interfaith and racial harmony, the choir members
represent several different races, numerous faith traditions, and a
variety of occupations. We are joined together by the ministry of
music, our beliefs uniting us as a choir, energizing us to share our message
and connect to others. Together we celebrate a commitment to creative
expression, musical excellence, commitment to service and shared
joy and support. We endeavor to infuse joy and lift the spirits of our
audiences through our music and message, while offering
encouragement to those who may be struggling through
difficult times. We aim to remind our audiences, and ourselves, that
anything is possible.
We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been
funded over the years by donations from our devoted members and
fans, through paid performances and arts grants, and by annual Mosaic
Harmony fundraising concerts. During our concert season, which runs
from September through June, the choir performs in locations throughout the Washington metropolitan area.
Our History
20
years ago, a group of people inspired by the work
of the Race Relations Task Force of the Unitarian
Universalist Congregation of Fairfax hosted a concert
featuring four different congregational choirs in the Northern
Virginia area. Following this inspirational event, a group of people cast
a vision of creating a permanent choir comprised of people from various
religious, racial, and cultural backgrounds to promote harmony,
understanding, and goodwill through the power of inspirational
music. Thus, Mosaic Harmony was given birth.
Over the years, Mosaic Harmony has evolved into a truly multicultural and interfaith choir that has performed for audiences
throughout the Washington DC Metro area and abroad. Over 23
different faith traditions are represented in the current membership
and the music we create promotes unity in the midst of diversity. Our
goal is to be a source of inspiration on a local, national, and global
level as we demonstrate and encourage a vision of one humankind.
Mosaic Harmony performs for a variety of audiences. We have
recently performed for Discovery’s celebration of
the 50th
anniversary of the March on Washington, the Unity Walk, the One
Million Bones Event
on the Washington Mall,
Washington
Hospital
Center’s Martin Luther
King, Jr. Celebration,
the Northern Virginia
Mental Health Clinic,
Global Camps Africa,
National Hospice, and
many others.
Our Director
T
he Rev. David K. North has been sharing his ministry in Word
and Song for all of his life. David had been the Director of
many musical groups including the Southern Illinois University
Gospel Choir, the Youth For Christ Fellowship Mass Choir
of Washington, DC, the Metropolitan Community Church of
Washington Gospel Choir, and David North and the Gospel
Celebration. He has been the Director of Mosaic Harmony
Community Choir since 1996. David has produced, recorded, and
performed on multiple recordings, and has been a soloist with the
Men and Women of the Gospel at the Kennedy Center, Washington,
DC. In addition, David has played the lead role of Oedipus in the
“Gospel At Colonus” at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop and at the
H Street Playhouse of Washington, DC. Rev. David North is an
ordained minister with the Baptist Church and with the Universal
Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. He currently
serves as pastor for Holy Redeemer Metropolitan Church in College
Park, Maryland.
