The Monitored Priority Catchment project is looking at how water quality in the Lunan water, including Balgavies and Rescobie Lochs, can be improved. This is being progressed through group meetings organised by Macualay Institute and SAC with local residents, fishery groups, farmers and other stakeholders, and through monitoring flow, chemistry and ecology of 5 streams, groundwater boreholes and the Lunan Water itself. It also involves promoting, along with SEPA, better control of diffuse sources of pollution, especially P and N, from septic tanks, agriculture, sewage treatment, loch sediments and building works, and better management of the river corridor itself.
