POWER FAILURE:
In case of power lallure to keep your Fire Chief Furnace from over-heating and
causing damage to the electncal components follow these steps
1 Insure thai the by-pass rod is pulled OUI aUowlng hea t to go up chimney
2 Close the spin damper control on the ash door
3 Close the slide cover on the side of the draft motor (see page 10)
4 DO NOT add more fuet (wood) to the firebox
There is no warranty o n elec trical components due to power failure .
LOCAT ION AND tNSTALLATl ON:
NOTE : Befof'f! beginn ing yo ur installation, co nsult with proper local authorities
regarding local
c~s
governing all such applications and instaliafions.
00 NOT coonect this unit to a chimney flue servln9 another appliance Your furnace must be placed on a non-combusbble floor and poSition ~ as close to the chimne y
as possible
Air for combusllon must be prOVided Into room where furnace is located
Allow alt free access to furnace for combustion and ventilation Recommendation :
We recommend the purchase of Chimfex ' " Dry Chemical Chimney Fire ExtingUISher These are readily available at most Stove shops and hardware Siores
Smoke detectors should be instaHed on aU levels of your home. Frnally we recommend
haVlfl9 on hand <II twe extingUisher Wlth!n the furnace room or area.
CHIMNEY TYPE AND RECOMMENDATION :
See diagram on Page 7
Safety requirements demand that your Fire Chief Furnace be connected to
" Class AH HT2100 All Fu el or sta l nlea s- lined masonry c himney ONLY .
By defiOllioo. HC/ass A " refers to either a Imed masonry chimney or al! fuel factory-built chimney Although expen s have e)(pressed dlffenng opinions as to which system IS supenor. we feel ~ is a matter of what you find most suitable. Regardless of your
choice 01 flue type . for Models 500 an d 700, ... minimum 6" diameter and for the
Model 1100, a minimum of 8 ~ diameter In order to create the most efftc;ient draft
the chimney size should not exceecl 12 Inches with a maximum of 08 Inches water
column of draft. With the use of a draft gauge or manometer. the flue drafl can be
measured. if more than 08 Inches of waler column df3ft can be adjusted WIth !he
installation of a flue damper The stove pIpe reqUired to connect your furnace to the
chimney should be a minimum of 24 gauge thICkness NEVER USE GALVANIZED PIPE.
Horizontal run should not exceed five feet and should have a minimum rise of two
Inches per foot No Installation should have more than two elbows and a 45·
elb o w Is preferable to II 90· elbow.
As a safety precaullOn. all ptpe sections shoold be fastened together wrth a flUn!mum of three sheet metal screws For your convenience the crimped male ends of the
pIpe should point toward the rurnace to form dnp-free coonectJOns thereby reduccng the
poSSibility 01 aeosote leakage from the )OInlil. Installing a heat reclcllmer In tOe pipe IS
not recommended because II reduces the stack temperature thus causing creosote
formation. Finally. we recommend Installing a manually operated cast Iron damper In the
stove pipe. between the furnace and the chimney pipe The add~ion o f the damper will
gre atly assist you in regulating your fire and achieving optimum results Always Install a
tee WIth clean-out cap to the chimney outlet on the back of the furnace . This allows for
easy clean-out of the chimney system
When uSlf'lg a masoruy chimney. you must line the chimney with a stainless steel
liner. The stainless liner WIlt keep the chimney temperature hotter for better draw and
slQOIflC3ntty reduce the creosote formatlOl'l 11'1 the ct'llmney. II using this method. use 6"
stainless liner for the FCSOO and FC700 and 8" stainless liner for the FC1 100
•
DANGER · Ri sk of fire .. nd Explosion.
Do not burn garbage, gasolin e, dr~ln oil or other flammable liquids
WARNING
• NEVER use galvanize<! pipe In your chimney connection· It produces poisonous gllses
when subjected to e~treme temperatures.
• USE only Masonry or manufllct ured ~Cless A" HT2100 All Fuel Chi mney for your Fire
Chief.
• I NSPECT chimney system penodlcally for structul1lllnt~rity.
• CLEAN the chimney system regularly to prevent creosote accumulation.
• NEVER leave the esh PlIn In your Fire Chief during operation .
DUCT RUNS :
Duct wori( Shouid be desi9n.ed so the e~ter-nal static pressure on high speed does
not exceed .02 water column Inches while developing IIIr velocities Of 600 feet to 1,000
feet per minu te In the main trunk duct lind 400 feet to 600 feet per minute at the
registers. The heat outlet erea should never be less than 12 Inches rou nd. The Fire Chief
MUST be installed with a coid air return system. The system sl"lotJid be a minimum of
10% larger than the heat outlet to read ily transfer the ((lid ai r beck to the furnace. Avoid
using 90- elbows In duct IVns; 45- elbows provide a better air flow and len resistance.
CAUT ION : The warm air supply outlet of the supplementary himace should not be
connecte<! to the cold IIlr return Inlet of the central hirnace, because a possibility exists of
components of the centrel furnace overheating and causing the a!ntl1ll furnaa! to operate other than as Intended.

ncor
1. The A 5h Pan sho u ld be removed from your Fire Chief during operation .
We recommend this precautionary me asu re because If the ash pan is allowed t o remain
Inside the furnace during operation, it will become da"gerously hot to touch, block t he
now of air under the gretes and reduce the eff\clency of t he furnace.
2. Remove the ashes from you r Fi re Chief Furnace at least once ~ dey - or as
often as necessary to ensure t he ashes do not accumulate to th e height of the grat es. If
ash bu ild·up occurs at grete level , It will cau~e premat ure fe ilure of the grates, voiding the
warr.lnty on the grates. Unacceptably high temperatures will result because the ashes
have restricted the flow of cooling "Ir beneath the grate. Thl~ flow of ai r was designed to
not only cool the grates, but to also provide warmed air for better com bu stion. If the

reducing the efficiency and heat output of 'fOOr fire Chier.
3 . Place hot ashe s in e covered, air t ight metal co ntainer - place the con tainer on
a non-combustible surface. Discard the hot ashes In a safe manner.
4 . Wood ash is an especially potent fertilizer.
CAUTION : Hot Surf~ces: Keep Children away. Do Not tovch during opera t ion.
GENERAL OPERATION :
Always pull the By·pan Rod all the way -OUT~ bef ore o pening the fuel

When openl"9 the fuet door during operation, walt ten seconds after releasing the
first latch, t hen proceed to the fvlly open position. The dual lat ch system has bee n
incorporilted as a sa fety fea t ure designed to eliminate t he pOS$l b l1ity of gaseous ignition.
Laboratory testing has determined t hat when incomplete combustion occurs t he partially spent fuel s.omct imes concentra t es 11lrge amounts or potentially hazardous gilses
within t he fire chamber. If the d oor is opened suddenly under these conditions, t he
oxygen may combine wit h these gases and cause Ignition referre d to as backflash . Use
EXTREME CAUTION when opening t he fuel door.
When relOlld l"9 the Fire Chief, spread the embers evenly over the grate. Place
smaller pieces of wood or coal on the hot embers and Illyer larger pieces on top of them .
Finally, du e to the wide v3riety of t empereture ranges d utlng the winter, you may ex pe rience periods when It is not necessary t o fully load the fire chamber In order to maintain
an ove rn ight blJrn. Your Fire Chief will operate at the highest efficiency by ilddlng fuel In
amounts to maintain comfo rtable temperol\u res In your nome .
CRE OS OTE PREVENTION
To help prevent the format ion of cr(ltlsote withm the flue, ALWAYS BURN DRY
SEA SONED WOOD . Dry wood burns hOffer, a//owlng flue gilses t o m aintilln tempera-
tUfes above 212°F which should prevent the format ion of creosote In the chimney_ If
the flue gas te mperature fells be low 2i2:°F, condensllt ion occurs C<lusing the formation
and accumulat ion of creosote within t he chim l'ley.
As"n added preca utiOrl, periodic chimney InspectIons are recommended during the heating
sellSOtI t o determine if creosote rormatlol'l tlas occurred. For safety 6nd efficiency, ,1 IS
r ecommended (hilt the chimney syst em be Inspected and c/eiJned prior to each heatinf)
season
CREOSOTE FORMATION ANO THE NEED FOR REMOVAL :
When wood Is burned slowly, it produces and organic vapors which ctlmbil\e with
expelled moisture to form creosot e, the creosote vapors condense In the relatIvely
cooled chimney flue of OJ slOW burning fire. As a result, creosote residue accumulates on
the flue lining. When ignited this creosote makes an extremely hot fire. The chimney
connector and the chimney shou ld be Inspected at leas t tw ice monthly during the heating season to determine if II creosote buIld-up has occurred. If creosote has accumu IlIl ed it shOUld be removed t o reduce risk of II chimney fire .
CHIMNEY FIRE WARNING :
'n the event of II chimney fire, tllke the following IIctlonslmmediately :
I . Activllte and toss II ChirnFex - Dry Chem ical Chimney Fi re Extinguisher Int o
the firebox .
2. Close the Ash Door. Fuel 0001'", SP1ll Draft and slid e CO~r on Draft MotOl".
3. Alert the ENTIRE household "nd prepare to eVllcuil t e If necessary.
<1. Q11 your local Fire Depllrtment.
FRONT ORAFT BLOWER:
