I'm a Park and Rec Kid!
As part of the National Recreation and Park Associations 50th
Anniversary, a social-media compaign has launched asking the
public to share their personal park and rec stories in order to
encourage others to get out and create their own park and rec
memories! Park and rec programs and services contribute to the
health of children, youth, adults, and seniors. Access to these
opportunities has been strongly linked to health and happiness
from childhood throughout adulthood.
Saturday, December 3, 2016
The City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods
Department invites you to share your own "Park and Rec Kid"
stories on our social media sites:

Modesto’s biggest community event of
the holiday season happens the first

The City of Modesto hosts many exciting holiday events that are fun for all ages. Our annual
Celebration of Lights will be held Saturday, December 3 and starts with a Breakfast with
Santa 8:30-11am at the Senior Center, 211 Bodem Street, followed by the Dickens' Faire and
Modesto Ceritified Farmer's Market on 15th Street in front of McHenry Mansion. The main
event is our big community holiday parade, downtown at 5:30pm, followed by a traditional tree
lighting and the Rockin' Holiday opening party! If you are interested in entering a float in the
parade, please fill out and submit an application, available online or in person in the Parks,
Recreation and Neighborhoods Department October 1. Entries are first come, first served
so apply early. The exciting Modesto Spirit of Giving 5k Run/Walk will be held downtown
on Saturday, December 10. This festive run benefits youth programs and Modesto Gospel
Mission and features holiday music, Santa, snow and a free kids fun run! Register to run, walk,
sponsor or volunteer. For more information, visit modestospiritofgiving.org.
We are excited to share that construction is well underway on the multi-use bike trail that
will take you right down to the Tuolumne River. This new trail will begin at the 7th Street
Bridge, which will lead you down into the Gateway Parcel of the Tuolumne River Regional
Park and connect with the existing Riverwalk Trail system. This project will continue the focus
on restoring the natural habitat while incorporating additional recreational opportunities. This
is an essential section of the Gateway Parcel that will include a backwater channel bringing
the Tuolumne River into the park during high water events. This addition to our Parks System
will include an outdoor classroom area, pedestrian bridge and observation area to take in the
beautiful scenery.
As a whole, the City of Modesto is looking to strengthen its relationship with members of our
community. We would love to hear your feedback on the programs offered or any new ideas
you may have for something we don’t currently offer. You can make a difference and help build
new programs for future years!
Follow us on Facebook, modesto.recreation. Be the first to learn about upcoming classes,
free programs, and the latest events. For more information on any of the upcoming events,
classes, or volunteer opportunities, please contact the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods
Department customer service at (209) 577-5344 or [email protected]

Pickle Ball, Adults, Seniors
According to The Journal on Active Aging, pickle ball is North
America’s fastest growing sport. It is a fun combination of
badminton, table tennis, paddle tennis, and tennis, and it is
a fresh, enjoyable road to fitness. According to the World
Pickle ball Federation, the game “is played much like a ping
pong game, with a badminton net placed slightly above
ground level.” Players hit a yellow plastic whiffle ball over
a net about 36 inched high, using a paddle. The game
involves the strategies of passing the ball, and quick-volley
exchanges at the net, which help develop reflex and
coordination skills, as well as quickness and agility. Playing
pickle ball also helps to improve muscular strength and
endurance, and increases cardiovascular activity.

GOLF
COURSES
In Modesto, you can enjoy three uniquely different public courses, collectively acclaimed as Northern California’s best
golf value! Each has its own challenge for different levels of play. For more information on a specific course, please
contact the clubhouse directly.
CREEKSIDE GOLF COURSE (18 HOLE PAR 72)
701 Lincoln Avenue, Modesto California (209) 571-5123
CLASSES
With three lakes, intricately contoured bunkers, large manicured tees and narrow fairways,
Creekside is a fair test for every club in your bag. Noted for fast, expansive greens, this
championship course has particular appeal to the more experienced golfer. Opened in
1991, Creekside offers a fenced driving range, large practice putting green, pro shop, and
full-service restaurant.
DRYDEN GOLF COURSE (18 HOLE PAR-72)
920 South Sunset Avenue, Modesto California (209) 577-5359
FREE PROGRAMS
Dryden winds along the Tuolumne River, encompassing mature pines and oaks, and wide emerald
fairways. Both beginners and experts who prefer a more traditional round of golf will appreciate its
medium-sized greens guarded by small bunkers. Course amenities include a full-service pro shop
and restaurant.
MODESTO MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE (9 HOLE-PAR 35)
400 Tuolumne Boulevard, Modesto California (209) 577-5360
SPECIAL EVENTS

some short executive 9-hole courses, this course offers full-length holes and small, level greens,
making it ideal for juniors, seniors, families, and those with time for only a quick round. The clubhouse has a small pro shop and handy snack bar for refreshments. A nearby driving range and
three practice greens are available for free use by the general public. Muni Golf Course is home
for The First Tee Modesto.
