PARENT SURVEY
Thank you to all the parents who
took the time to give us feedback
in the parent survey during conferences. We strive to work together to make our school the
most meaningful and efficient
learning environment for your
child.
Congratulations to the
winners of the parent survey drawing: Tabetha Benter and Desmond Goodwin ($25 Kwik

I would like to take a minute and recognize some noteworthy performance and share some
of the appreciations that I have received from parents this past month. I am grateful to staff
for making a difference and going above and beyond to make parents feel like Lincoln is a
great place to send their children. As always, if you have comments to make regarding our
staff, please share with me. ~Principal Shawn Galvin

I would like to acknowledge your wonderful support staff who continue to go out each and
every day to make sure that the students are being safe and yet having a fun time at recess,
and being safe before school. Most of them are always on time, and ready to go when their
shift starts. They truly care about the students, and want the best for each and every one.
Mrs. Lisa Jones has done an amazing job helping my child over the past several years and
we have seen a huge increase in his learning this year.
It really helps "K" self-confidence that Mrs. Olin is still interested in her even though "K" is
now in 3rd grade. She is such a positive role-model.
We love all the staff and the level of learning our children receive here.
I love the weekly Alertnow phone calls.
I appreciate all of the attention that was given to make sure my children were safe when
they didn't report directly home after school.

From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
We are heading
into a very
busy time at
Lincoln.
The
spring is busy
here as we welcome our 201314 kindergarten
families, finalize plans for
the
2013-14
school
year,
and make the
best use of the precious few weeks we
have left with our current students.
Research shows that background
knowledge is a key part of student success. One way that we try to increase
background knowledge in our students
is taking classes on field trips. There are
several field trips that are happening
this spring. The focus of any field trip is
to enrich the curriculum that the students are studying and to help provide
a hands-on or real-life approach to
learning. All of these opportunities are
vital to having a positive experience.
By participating in local events, visiting
historical sites, or discussing cultural
awareness you can help build your
child’s background knowledge, too.
We have several assessments that we
use to help measure student learning.
We use the information collected from
these assessments to identify areas that
need to be re-taught or design small
groups for targeted instruction. One of
those assessments is the MAP test. All
students participate in this each spring.
The window for this test is April 1st –
May 3rd. We really are looking at individual student growth and wanting to
see an increase from their previous
spring scores.
Your satisfaction with your child’s education is important to us. During Parent
-Teacher Conferences you were asked
to give your feedback on the parent
satisfaction survey. We will be going
over the results in the next few weeks
and making an action plan to address
areas for improvement and celebrating/
recognizing the strengths. We drew
names for winners of the gas cards and
contacted the 5 winners. We had 2$25 and 3-$10 gas card winners.
A good way to keep the learning going
over Spring Break or anytime during
the year is to visit the Quick links section on the Lincoln Elementary home
page. There are activities and learning
games for all grade levels and many
different areas under each content area.
The direct link is here: http://
www.janesville.k12.wi.us/Default.aspx?
tabid=1085
I would also like to remind you that for
the safety of your child and others that
you please use the stop, drop, and go
areas for student drop-off and pick-up.
Please refrain from using the parking
lots for these before and after school
times. Let’s all do our part in making
Lincoln a safe place
for all students and
adults.

SPIRIT WEAR
Recently, Lincoln student, families, and
staff purchased approximately 215 pieces
of Spirit Wear to wear in upcoming Blue
& Gold Spirit Days. It was pleasing to see
such school pride in the great response to
our Spirit Wear opportunity. Apparel
arrived mid-February. Many staff and
students wore their new shirts on an impromptu spirit day the following day!

KINDERGARTEN
February was full of holidays and excitement…from groundhogs and valentines to Lincoln and Washington’s birthdays to
the 100 days of school! Thank you again, to all of our kindergarten families, for attending your child’s conference. We enjoyed visiting with all of you!
March brings Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, St. Patrick’s Day, and our
Around the Town/Transportation Unit. We will take a pretend trip to Walt Disney World, read maps, and build our
own cars!
In April, we will explore all kinds of weather, learn about
plants and farms, and even plant our own seeds. Our Growing Things Unit is sure to be a bushel of fun. At the end of
April, we will venture into the darkness with our Night Time
Unit and Bug Surprises! Monday, May 6th is Kindergarten Orientation for the 2013-2014 students. There will be NO
SCHOOL for our current Kindergarteners on that day.
Happy March…Happy April…Happy Spring!!

FIRST GRADE
FIRST GRADERS have had SNOW MUCH FUN this month
with the winter weather. We love the snow, but it sure is
cold. Please make sure your child is coming with boots, snowpants, mittens/gloves, and a hat each day.
We enjoyed talking with all of you again at conferences. We
are proud of the progress your children have made so far. It is
very important to have your student keep reading for Captain’s Club and checking the folder for homework. Progress
reports will be coming home soon and then Trimester III
Goals will be introduced in March.
We will be going on a field trip to UW-Whitewater Young
Auditorium on March 20th for a musical production of Junie B.
Jones! Watch for more notes to comeJ.
Many of our first graders have earned their Bee Wings for
good character! We love to recognize the students for making
good choices here at school. Our Super Friday program continues to be quite a motivator and a success for the students
who show respect, responsibility, and safe behaviors at school.
Thank you for supporting Lincoln and your children as they
grow and learn!
SECOND GRADE
Second graders will be going to JPAC to see School House
Rock on Thursday Feb. 28th at 9:00. Spring break starts on
Monday March 25th and school resumes on April 1st. We continue to work on learning our addition and subtraction facts.
Also 15 min. a day reading will count toward their capt. club
requirement. As the weather continues to change, remember
to wear appropriate outer wear.

FOURTH GRADE
Fourth graders have been busy working to improve their
reading and math skills. We have been working on reading
higher level books so we are practicing asking questions as we
read and making connections with what we are reading. It is
important that your child read daily. The more your child
reads the more confidence they will have as a reader! Please
check out the Studyladder website that we have been using at
school to improve reading and math skills. It is a great free
program that you can access from the internet.
Our field trip to Madison will be on April 2 and we will tour
the Capitol, The Veteran's Museum and the State Historical
Museum. Watch for more information to come on other
field trips and events. Please feel free to call with any questions or concerns.

GROWING A HEALTHY WISCONSIN
Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB) and Rochelle Ripp, the 65th Alice in Dairyland, visited Lincoln on Thursday, February 14 to present Growing a Healthy Wisconsin
to our 4th grade. Growing a Healthy Wisconsin is a newly updated 4th grade classroom presentation to help strengthen your Wisconsin social studies unit. The interactive presentation emphasizes the current economic impact of Wisconsin agriculture and
relates fun nutrition facts to the students about foods produced in Wisconsin. The visit
also featured a 45-minute classroom presentation, along with a sampling of Wisconsin
cheese, a classroom poster and a student take home handout.
GRANT WINNER
Congratulations to Becky Carter who was awarded in a surprise celebration
by district administration and school board. Becky won a $250 grant from
the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin for Reading, Relaxing,

LUNCH BUDDIES
Recently at Lincoln we started a new program of Lunch Buddies in conjunction with our
Students Assistance Program (SAP). One of several great volunteers connects weekly to a
specific student that would benefit from the positive encouragement this weekly relationship
can provide. Thank you, Linda Hoague our volunteer Coordinator, for connecting our invaluable volunteers with Lincoln students.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Mrs. Wenzel hosted Lincoln’s 11th annual “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraiser event to benefit American
Heart Association. Students sought contributions. Monday, February 18 was for 3-5 grades in the gym
from 3:00-4:00 p.m. The event for students in K-2 was Thursday, February 21. Parents were welcome
to come and jump with their child/ren during the events. Congratulations to the top fundraisers: Jenna
Runaas (2G) $356; Mia Lossee (KA) $250; Riley Aresdorf (3S) $180; Meghan Rule (3D) $170. All funds
collected totaled over $2590.
STAFF SURVEY RESULTS
I would like to share the results of the Staff Satisfaction Survey, taken in December. We had the
highest score we have ever had 4.22 out of 5.0 We are always looking to improve but these are
great scores. I want to recognize staff for all the hard work each has put into this year and helping to make Lincoln a great place to work. By working together we have accomplished 24 out of
26 of the questions having a mean score above 4.0. As you may already know, a score of 4.0
means things are hardwired and ingrained into our organization. As parents of Lincoln students,
you can feel confident that our staff members enjoy where they work. ~Shawn Galvin, Principal

are working with different programs such as First in Math,
Wordly Wise and Gmail! Our
afternoon session has an Engineering focus!
The students
have been solving problems like
“REAL-LIFE” engineers!
Here
are some comments from the
“engineers:”
High quality play dough
Cleaning up an oil spill
Kris Mahaffey, 2nd Grader on Designing a Wall – “It is pretty creative. It is
pretty fun. I have learned that engineering stuff is actually interesting.”
Marcus Duncan, 3rd Grader on Cleaning Up an Oil Spill – “We have been
learning about an oil spill. It is very hard to clean up and some animals can
die before you can clean them.”
Paige Uchida, 4th Grader on Designing Play Dough – “It was fun. We learned
how to make play dough. We got to do interesting stuff, like designing colors for juice. We had fun with the engineering process through experiments.”
Jacob Stewart, 5th Grader on Designing Knee Braces – “This is very educational and we learn about stuff we have never learned about before. It is a
lot of fun designing knee braces. Plus, you get to meet new friends along the
way.”
On March 4th we begin a new journey through different engineering projects

Hi! My name is Sarah Weston and I will be student teaching with Mrs. Jones this spring semester. I am currently a senior at University Wisconsin-Whitewater. My major is special education/early childhood education. I am working on my certification of teaching children birth to third grade. I will be studying and teaching abroad this semester. I will be gone from March 8 th until May 4th. I also have experience student teaching with children birth to three years of age. I am originally from Rockford, IL., but have attended University
Wisconsin-Whitewater for the past three years. I graduated from Blackhawk Technical College in 2010. I also
work for a daycare in Janesville. I work with children birth to four years old. Besides working with children
my interests include reading, scrapbooking, and traveling. I will be working with Mrs. Jones in a variety of
settings including small and large groups in math, reading, and science. I will gain more responsibilities as the
semester progresses. I will be in charge of lead teaching for two weeks. I am excited for this opportunity!
My name is Nya Geschke and I am attending Concordia University. I am working towards certification in
grades 1-8. I graduated from UW-Whitewater with a degree in Health & Human Performance, where I also played on the women’s basketball team. I am currently student teaching 4th grade with Mrs. Carter. I will be here until March 22 and then get to enjoy spring
break before heading to Wisconsin Dells, where my fiancé lives. I will be student teaching
there at the middle school in 6th grade. I was previously employed by the SDJ as substitute
teacher & aide and then at Franklin Middle School as a CD aide, for the past 2 years. I am
also a varsity assistant coach for girl’s basketball at Parker High School. I was born and
raised in Janesville and am a huge sports junkie. I love all things Packers, Brewers, Badgers
and Duke Blue Devils. I am engaged and planning a Sept. 1, 2013 wedding. I am excited
to be a Lincoln Lion!
I’m Elyse Dean! I am a guest in Mrs. Anderson’s AWESOME fifth grade classroom. How lucky am I? I get to
teacher these stellar kids until the end of this school year! I can’t wait to learn more about my students and
help them learn more about me. I go to school at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. My major is Elementary Education, and I have an ESL (English as a Second Language) minor. I live in Whitewater, Wisconsin,
with my cat Sullivan. He loves to be outside, so I’m teaching him how to walk on a leash. You’d be surprised how good he is at it! We like to watch The Biggest Loser and NBC 15 Morning News together. The
NBC 15 weatherman, Charlie Shortino, is my hero. Thanks for taking some time to read a bit about me! I
hope I get the chance to meet you personally! I look forward to meeting more of the families, faculty, and
students that rule this school. :)
My name is Nicole Samuelson and I am a student teacher who will be working with Mrs. Ries in the Special
Education Department until the end of the school year. Throughout my education I have also worked with
the school districts of Milton and Whitewater and at the Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
These field experiences all lasted a minimum of a month to help in preparing me to become
an educator. During the summer I work for the Edgerton School District and currently, I am a
lead teacher at a learning center in Edgerton but have taken time off to take part in this awesome experience! I have also been trained in CPR, first aid, SIDS, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. Through this experience, I hope to gain so much knowledge from the staff and also
the students to help me to provide the best education possible. I am very exited to be here!

have any questions concerning immunization requirements, please call Mary
Kozak, Lead Nurse at 295-3419.
HIGHER WKCE EXPECTATIONS ADOPTED FOR MATH AND READING
In the School District of Janesville, and across the state of Wisconsin, we are working to ensure that our students are ready for further education and careers. Our
state assessment has been changing to reflect this priority.
Wisconsin public schools have received the results of the Wisconsin Knowledge and
Concepts Examinations (WKCE) that students in Grades 3 through 8 and 10 took
this fall. Parents will receive the Individual Report of your child on March 8 along
with the Trimester 2 Progress Report.
This year, Wisconsin raised the WKCE scores needed for students to reach the basic,
proficient, and advanced performance levels in reading and math. Because of these
changes, WKCE results will show a significant decline in the number of students considered to be “proficient” or “advanced.”
This does not reflect a change in the abilities of students, teachers, or schools. It only
reflects the higher standards and aspirations we have for our students and schools.
The new college and career readiness proficiency levels are based on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often called the “Nation’s Report Card.” The adoption of NAEP performance standards is part of a statewide plan to continue to
improve school performance, and part of a national movement to prepare all American high school graduates to compete in a
global society.
The change affects WKCE results for reading and math. It does not affect other
WKCE content areas, such as social studies, science, and language arts, or WAA-SwD
scores, an alternative assessment taken by a small portion of Wisconsin students.
Wisconsin is on a rapid trajectory toward higher standards. This includes implementation of the Common Core State Standards, Wisconsin School Report Cards, upgraded curriculum standards for students with disabilities and English language learners, and improved, next-generation assessments. Raising the WKCE benchmarks is
part of a strategic effort to ensure our children are ready for college and careers in
today’s rapidly changing, global society and economy.
Adjusting to the higher aspirations and expectations will take some time, but this is a
necessary change for a worthy purpose: to elevate the achievement of our students
and their schools. Together, we can all work to make sure every child graduates
ready for college and career.

District Information
SAFETY IN OUR SCHOOLS
by Dr. Karen Z. Schulte, Superintendent
As a result of the violence at Sandy Hook the School District of Janesville in collaboration
with the Janesville Police Department has worked hard to affirm for parents and the
community the safety of our children is a combined top priority. For example; Project
Direct Connect, in which there will be a police radio placed in each building that connects the school directly with each officer on duty in the case of an extreme emergency.
You may also notice, when you visit buildings in the district, the manner in which you are
greeted has changed. Anyone greeting visitors at the door will ask:
1. The visitor’s name
2. The purpose of their business
3. The name of the person the visitor plans to meet with
The School District of Janesville is asking that each visitor to district buildings be very patient and respond appropriately, as safety is our main concern.
