Physics lesson aside, Sir Isaac Newton was on to
something. While exercise and fitness may not have
been the exact application, his Laws of Motion seem
particularly relevant. It’s not rocket science (well,
maybe a little). Clearly, the first step is to get your
body in motion. Tricky business these days. There are
all those equal, opposing forces acting on us…like the
endless and enticing technologies designed to save
us both time and steps…literally. Can you imagine life
without email and texting? Not happening. Why travel
across the office or down the hall when our fingers
can do the walking?

WAC's Got Water
Now
So, back to that trick of getting your body in motion.
There’s another more current, yet brilliant concept
we’re going to borrow from. Just do it. Make exercise
a regular part of your lifestyle—the sooner, the better.
And if you need a little motivation, you’ve come to the
right place.

Emmanuel’s Story:
My weight management issues began back
when I was in middle school and lasted
throughout my college years. At the beginning
of a new year, something clicked and I decided
that I didn’t like the path I was on. I needed to
make some lifestyle changes. The first day I
went to the WAC I remember feeling extremely
overwhelmed and intimidated, but after meeting
the staff and taking a tour, I felt I was making
the right decision. I began training with Adam
Witt who deserves the credit for getting me on
the right track. He helped me significantly by
designing personalized programs that allowed
me to reach my fitness goals.
My main source of inspiration comes from my
family and friends. Their constant encouragement
and unwavering support motivates me to
keep pushing myself. The WAC has helped
me immensely by providing an atmosphere
where I enjoy spending my time. It’s not always
easy to work out in the morning or after work,
but the environment at the club makes it a lot
easier. Jamie, Stephanie and Allie inspire me by
constantly finding new ways to challenge me. The
Front Desk staff also keeps me accountable and
never hesitates to let me know when I’ve missed
a few days.
keep working hard
One of my main milestones was when I ran my
first 5K. Running was never one of my strengths.
I was the kid that struggled to run the mile in
school, so this was an important moment for me.
Now I run just about every day.

Don’t miss the boat…try rowing!
The rowing machine: you’ve probably walked by it dozens of times but never thought to use it. You might not know it yet, but it just
might be your new favorite machine. The list of benefits from rowing is impressive:
■ Low impact – save wear and tear on your joints
■ Uses whole body – works upper and lower body throughout the movement
■ Great calorie burner – because so many muscles groups are involved
■ Efficient – a lot of aerobic work can be done in a short period of time
It’s no surprise that Rowing is on the rise in popularity, and with the addition of Advanced Training and Specialty classes like Ride &
Row and Row Fit, our Trainers can help you take your workouts in a new and highly effective direction. For more information, contact
your club’s Fitness Director or any Fitness Staff.
Rowing can feel a bit strange for some people. Here are a few quick pointers for getting started:
1
The Catch - Start the movement with your legs, then “kick”
with your upper body with a slight forward lean.
2
The Drive - From the slight lean forward, start sitting upright about
midway through the “kick.”
3
The Finish - When your legs reach full extension, pull the handle with your
upper back muscles to the top of your abdomen. At this point you should
have a slight lean back with your upper body.
6
4
The Recovery - Slowly return handle to beginning
position. Return should take twice as long as pull.

League begins June 3
Join us for this 7 or 8-week league plus playoffs.
Teams consist of two players and a sub. You’ll be
playing two 10-minute halves per game. Put your
own team together or we can place you. (Teams
may have one non-member player.)
Patsy’s Story:
Our dog, Molly, came into our life in January of 2007. Being an active lab
puppy, she demanded daily walks. One day I thought that maybe I could
run. I told myself, “Just make it to the next mailbox.” One mailbox turned
into two, and soon Molly and I were running miles.
Late Night Kickball
After I ran my first 5K, I was hooked on running and couldn’t wait to sign
up for more races. Running with my husband, my times got better and
our marriage got stronger. We joined the WAC in 2011, and I met some
great people. Correen and Nicole were very helpful with training and
suggested programs that I might want to try.
Wednesdays
June – August
Play kickball outside under the lights. We will
chose teams each week, so there is no need to
sign up. Just come ready to play. If it rains (or
snows), we will play an alternate game inside.
Running became my go-to exercise. I signed up for the Rock ‘n’ Roll
Half Marathon in Nashville. I ran with Nicole Ford, my husband, and my
niece, who ran the entire race in the pouring rain with me, encouraging
me when I wanted to quit. When I crossed that finish line, I couldn’t have
been more proud of myself. I ran three half marathons that year including one on my 50th birthday!
Patsy’s Advice:
No matter where you are in life, it is never too late to try something new. I did
nsand I have never looked back and
not start running until I was 45 years fold,
thought, “I wish I hadn’t tried that.” Recently I sawfa ns
quote that was somef
thing like this… “Running doesn’t get old, it keeps me from getting old.”

Froedtert & the Medical College of
Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Athletic Club
share a common goal of being part of your
healthy lifestyle. Through this partnership,
we have been able to offer programs
to WAC members and the community
including:
• Make It a Habit
This four-week commitment offers tools to
turn resolutions into habits. Look for the
new fall program on how to handle the
stress of the holidays at froedtert.com/
classes.
• High School Sport Physicals
The Sports Medicine team offers
comprehensive WIAA-required sports
physicals for high school athletes for a
minimal fee. For locations, dates and times,
visit froedtert.com/sports-physicals.
• Free Sports Injury Assessments
The Sports Medicine team offers free
injury assessments by licensed athletic
trainers for non-urgent sports- related
injuries. This assessment will help you
learn what may be causing the problem
and how to treat it. For more information,
visit froedtert.com/classes.
• Choose to Move
Froedtert employees are invited to
participate in our “Choose to Move” Fitness
Challenges offered throughout the year
and hosted by Wisconsin Athletic Club.
Not sleeping enough or not sleeping
well on a regular basis is not a good
thing. It may surprise you to learn that
chronic sleep deprivation, no matter
the reason, greatly impacts your health,
performance and safety.
There are many causes of sleep
deprivation. The stresses of daily life
may make it difficult to “turn your
brain off” at night, or maybe you trade
sleeping hours for waking hours of more
work or play. Sleeping disorders and
medical or mental health conditions
can also disrupt and prevent you from
getting a restful night in bed.
Sleep deprivation impacts a vast number
of mental and physical attributes. They
include the following:
■ Decreased performance, alertness
and memory
■ Mood changes such as irritability,
impatience, and inability to concentrate
■ Cardiovascular health, including
hypertension, increased stress hormone
levels and irregular heartbeat
■ Impaired immune function
■ Decreased overall safety (greater risk
of falls or road accidents)
■ Decreased metabolism and increased
weight gain
■ Decreased quality of life (inability to
participate in or enjoy certain activities
that require sustained attention)
The Froedtert & the Medical College of
Wisconsin regional health care network
is composed of an academic medical
center, two community hospitals and more
than 30 primary and specialty care health
centers and clinics. Find one close to you
at froedtert.com.

Pay attention to what you eat and
drink before you lay down. Don’t
go to bed hungry or overly full; This
discomfort could keep you awake. Be
cautious of consuming alcohol, nicotine
or caffeine too close to your bedtime,
these can wreak havoc on sleep
patterns.
■ Create a bedtime ritual. Repeat the
same activities nightly before bed. This
will signal your body to start winding
down.
■ Be cautious of screen time with
computers, cell phones and the
television too close to bedtime. A book
might be a better option for you.
■ Get comfortable. Create a room that
is ideal for sleeping: cool, dark and
quiet.
■ Limit daytime sleeping to 10-30
minutes and schedule your nap for midafternoon.
■ Include physical activity in your daily

■ Help manage your daily stress by
organizing thoughts, setting priorities

■ After attempting the above, know
when to contact your doctor and begin
to research sleep disorders or any
underlying issues.

Cindy’s Story:
I didn't work out much in college and often went
out with my friends, leading me to a very unhealthy
lifestyle. Being 24 has its challenges; we never want
to miss a fest, Brewer’s game or night out.
When we decided it was time for a change, we
came to the WAC after a recommendation from
a friend. We loved it the moment we walked in.
The WAC has a great atmosphere and the staff
are incredibly welcoming. Our Trainer, Eric, really
helped us continue to stay focused. We might
have a bad week but we always know we have a
workout with Eric to help get us back on track. I'm
down 20lbs since this time in 2012.
Bailey inspires me; her journey is so incredible it
motivates me to be better. She has overcome many
obstacles in her life and is still the most optimistic
person I've ever met. If I'm having a bad day, she's
always there and gives me the best advice.

Bailey’s Story:
My dad passed away at the age of 47. He was always overweight, and I
realized I needed to change my lifestyle to be healthy for the rest of my life.
In January 2011, I joined Weight Watchers at my highest weight of 260lbs.
But when I moved to Milwaukee with Cindy last summer, we were really bad
influences on each other. We decided to cut it out and get serious. We went
on a “gym search" and found the WAC. After our first tour, we said, “That’s it.
We have to join here.”
The staff are really invested in us. Every time we come, every class we go
to, staff members introduce themselves to us. They want to get to know
us…we aren’t just another customer. We want to come to the gym and feel
motivated here.
Trying to lose weight in your early 20s is a challenge. It’s hard to stay on my
workouts and Weight Watchers plan. But seeing results really motivates me,
and the WAC and my Trainer, Eric, help with that. When I lost 50lbs, that was
a big deal, but every 5-10lbs feels like a success/milestone. Now I’m training
for my first half marathon!
Bailey’s Advice: Never give up and don’t let the bumps in the road stop
you. Every day is another day to do better.

Kim’s Story:
When I graduated from college in 1975, I
decided it was time to lose weight and get
in shape. I kept active by running, playing
racquetball and playing softball. I’ve had a few
great milestones including running 5 miles in
31:04 and breaking 80 in 18 holes… 3 times!
Marilee’s Story:
I had surgery for thyroid cancer when I was 25 years old. I remember being
weighed at the doctor’s office, and that’s when it really hit me that I was
overweight. I joined Vic Tanny and Northridge Athletic Club in the early ‘80s,
taking aerobic classes and playing racquetball. It took a lot of hard work, but I
eventually lost 40lbs. I have been fairly successful in maintaining that weight, but
it gets more challenging with each decade. To avoid injury, I have to be more
mindful of form and how much weight I’m lifting. Our Trainer, John Torres, helps
keep me moving.

We joined the WAC in November to stay fit

It’s important that we stay active as we age; that way, we have more energy and

Make exercise part of your daily routine just like eating or sleeping; it will become
part of your lifestyle rather than something to do “when you have the time.”

Waukesha Member
Retired pediatric anesthesiologist from Children’s Hospital

West Allis Member
Interests:
I’m a huge baseball person. I practice almost every day to get better.
Interests:
Following retirement, I spend another 12 years doing volunteer
international medicine with small surgical teams, repairing
cleft lip/palate and burns. I worked in Central & South
America, Southeastern Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
Michael’s Story:
In second grade, I had my first fitness test in gym class. I
couldn’t do very many of the activities, and when my classmates
took notice, I started getting bullied. I wanted to improve myself.
My dad was my biggest inspiration. He took me to the gym for
the first time; he showed me how strong he was and what he
could do with his strength.
Nancy’s Story:
From childhood through college, I was very active in dancing.
Dance was my sport. As an active adult, bicycling became
my sport. It varied from daily rides to work to longer rides
throughout Wisconsin and Europe. My most exciting bike
tour was from Seattle to San Diego along the Pacific coast: a
challenging 1,700-mile ride and tenting at night. I was 52 at
the time.
In the years that followed, I became more interested in baseball
and wanted to become a better athlete. I made my first baseball
team and started to really see results. My coaches were inspiring
and they never stopped pushing me. Soon I started receiving
compliments from the people who used to make fun of me.
I have significant osteroarthritis in both knees, so I must
be selective in choosing low-impact exercise activities. My
favorite low-impact activities are H2O (with Jan, Kathleen,
Jenn or Renee) and Spin (with Jan).
At first, the WAC was just a place for me to work out. But when
I got to know the people and trainers better, they started to take
interest in what I was training for. If I was using improper form,
they would stop to help me fix it. Now I’m even stronger than my
dad in some areas.
I like to work at my own pace, and the WAC supports a
range of age groups in this endeavor. The water is beneficial
for joints. I occasionally choose “zero” impact by doing the
exercises while suspended and treading water.
Since I have a low metabolism, it is important for me to keep
moving. The positive WAC environment helps me get the results
I want, and staying active helps me live a better life and feel
good about myself.
Nancy’s Advice:
As we all age, it is important to keep active and moving. My
arthritis in my knees is benefitted by my four mornings a week
ns
swimming or spinning. Thank youf WAC!
Michael’s Advice:

Want to Keep Your Body Moving in the Right Direction?
Discover the benefits of regular Massage Therapy!
By Liz Becker, Massage Therapist at WAC Wauwatosa
Massage is too often perceived as a luxury
or a once-per-year treat for a special
occasion. Yes, massage is a treat, from
the dimly-lit room and warm table to the
soothing music, but it can be so much
more than that!
Incorporating regular massage has many
health benefits:
• Reduction or even elimination of pain and excess muscle tension
• Increased circulation, immune function, and joint mobility
• Decreased effects of depression and anxiety from lower blood pressure
Massage therapy works beautifully on
its own as well as a complement to an
exercise plan, nutrition plan and physical
therapy, allowing the body to naturally find
balance and heal itself faster. Massage
helps amplify results from an exercise or
physical therapy plan by encouraging the
body to rest and heal itself in between
sessions, leaving the body stronger and
more receptive to positive change.

Massage revs up the body’s natural
healing process by:
• Increasing blood flow
• Clearing out toxins
• Increasing white blood cells, which allows the lymphatic system to run more efficiently
The excess muscle tension that arises
from exercise and daily activity can
be greatly reduced through massage.
Symptoms of stiffness, weakness and
pain can put a damper on exercise
and everyday activities. Through
careful assessment of each
client’s muscles, the therapist
can reduce these symptoms
and improve range of
movement. While these
results can certainly be
attained within one
session, in most
cases, the client
will require

Additionally, the Invest in Wellness program offers a wide
variety of wellness resources. Employees have access to on-site
wellness coaching, behavioral health benefits, nutrition support,
on-site fitness equipment, fitness classes and more!
How do you evaluate the effectiveness of
your wellness initiative?
We track the effectiveness of our program by measuring
aggregate data provided through our annual screening process
and monitoring participation levels in both the core wellness
steps and voluntary programming. This data allows us to track
health risks, overall wellness score improvement and claim
costs.
The City of Wauwatosa
Excellence • Energy • Employment • Education
By Elizabeth Bohren, Health & Productivity Coordinator
Business Profile:
The City of Wauwatosa is a progressive, dynamic, full-service
municipal origination. The City has a total of 453 full-time
equivalent employees and it’s services include property
appraisals and assessments, legal services, election/voter
information and local elections, development and planning,
building inspections, property maintenance, protective services,
trash/recycling collections, sewer services, water meter
changes, public health services and a public library, to name a
few!
How has partnering with WAC helped
achieve your wellness objectives?
We began our relationship with the WAC in 2013 and have not
looked back! The WAC’s fantastic staff coordinates and runs
our on-site fitness classes. We have offered a variety of classes
including Yoga, ZUMBA, Core, Body Weight Conditioning
and a Back Care Class. The instructors are knowledgeable,
accommodating and have the ability to work with employees
on an individual level—even in a group setting. We’ve had
only positive feedback about the on-site classes, and we look
forward to offering many more in the future.
Tell us about some successes of your
wellness initiative and plans for the future.
Last year, the City held its first Wellness 5K Fun Run & Walk.
We had a fantastic turnout! To help employees prepare for
the event, we partnered with the WAC to offer a 5K Training
Program (My First Race). The wonderful WAC coaches
provided training tips, tricks and motivation to help all the class
participants cross the finish line!
Tell us about your organization’s approach
to wellness in the workplace…
For the City of Wauwatosa, a work/life balance is not enough.
We offer an integrated host of wellness services to ensure that
our employees have the tools and resources they need—readily
available—to take care of their health. We want to make work
part of wellness, not an obstacle to wellness, and our Invest in
Wellness program strives to achieve that.
We look forward to growing our relationship with the WAC and
continuing to expand our wellness programming this year and
into the future!
What are the components of your wellness
initiative?
Completed annually in partnership with Froedtert Workforce
Health, the core wellness steps educate employees on their
health risks, provide them with a snapshot of their overall
health, help keep them up to date on age-appropriate cancer
screenings and give them access to wellness coaches who can

Don’t
forget the
Sunscreen
by Michael Lederer
Downtown
Fitness Director
Runners, tennis players, swimmers,
golfers and baseball players have
more than one thing in common. We
all love playing sports and spending
time outside in the hot sun. All of that
sun exposure can result in a killer tan,
but we all know the side effects. Here
are some important sunscreen facts
to keep in mind while you enjoy these
summer months:
■ Sunscreen is something you
definitely don’t have to go easy
on. We now know that one ounce,
which is equivalent to a full shot
glass, is the recommended amount
of sunscreen needed to cover your
exposed skin.
■ You should apply sunscreen
liberally and reapply every two hours,
especially after perspiring, swimming
or towel-drying.

Meet Ryan Owsianny
Wauwatosa Member
Commercial Building Consultant
Wife: Katie and Sons: Ben (5) and Lucas (3)
Interests:
The gym and visiting our lake home in Tomahawk
Ryan’s Story:
After reaching the ideal weight for someone who is 6’10”, I realized that
this was not a good look for someone who was actually 5’9”. I started
working out consistently in 1995, and within a year, I got my weight
down from 230 to 170 pounds. No longer being obese was my biggest
milestone.
Through MyZone and varying my training, I was recently able to bring
my weight back down to where it was ten years ago. I have lost about
15 pounds over the last year. I have gone down two suit sizes since
Brian Hyland (WAC Personal Trainer) and Katie Gill’s wedding. I had to
purchase a new suit—and have yet to be reimbursed by Brian!
The people and the environment at the WAC are tremendous. I
have met a lot of great people—especially Duane Nolde. I provide
entertaining commentary during Duane and Brian Hyland’s training
sessions. I shadow…to make sure Duane actually works out.
Ryan’s Advice:
Seek out ways to motivate and challenge yourself. At the Tosa club, the
MyZone competitions have been a great motivating tool to continually
push myself and track my progress. The challenges bring out my
competitive nature and push me to try and beat the rest of the club!
Keep seeking new challenges
A special congrats...
to two WAC members who finished in the top 20 of the Global MEP

Keep Kids Moving :
Fight Childhood Obesity
Events
By Nicole Ford

Programming Director
Muffins for Moms
■ Emphasize activity, not exercise. Encourage children to play!
Children don’t need a structured exercise routine, they can play
games like hide-and seek, tag, jump rope or dance.
■ Find activities your child enjoys. If your child is interested in art,
go for a hike and collect leaves and rocks. If your child likes to read,
walk to the library. Or go to the nearest jungle gym and climb.
■ Limit sedentary activities. A guaranteed way to increase your
child’s activity is to limit their time watching television, using the
computer and playing video games.
■ Take advantage of outside resources. Schools, museums and
gyms are great places for kids to learn and practice healthy eating
and physical activity.

There are some very staggering statistics about children’s health.
Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled
in adolescents in the past 30 years. Children who are obese are
more likely to be obese as adults and suffer from health problems,
including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, bone and
joint problems, sleep apnea and low self-esteem. It is crucial that
we keep kids moving and encourage them to live a healthy lifestyle.
Here are a few ways to keep kids moving:

Dan & Lauren (Dad & Daughter)
Hi! My name is Lauren and I’m 2 years old. My dad is really awesome. When
he’s not working as a Milwaukee police officer, he likes to play basketball
and softball. He also says I’m adorable and sweet… what a smart dad. We
like to play with Barbies, race cars and daddy’s iPad. We go camping and
swimming and go to Fujiyama for steak hibachi and chicken dinner. We love
going to the WAC. I get to play dolls with my friends and have my hair done
by Tiffany. Dad gets to do grown-up stuff like weight lifting and cardio.
Whatever we’re doing, we both have a lot of fun at the WAC!

In the
Kitchen
with Kim
The coldest winter in decades is finally
over. Who can blame you for wanting to
enjoy the outdoors as much as possible
during the summer months? Who really
wants to stay inside and cook for hours?
Even so, supporting health and fitness
goals includes healthy meals and snacks.
Help is on the way.
Streamline your meals with
these easy tips:
Use the grill more often. Simple meals are
a snap. Toss cut-up vegetables (onions,
bell peppers, mushrooms, etc.) in a little
olive oil or oil-based salad dressing and
cook in a grill pan. Larger vegetables can
be cooked directly on the grill rack. Lean
meats, fish, and chicken add high-quality
protein. They can be marinated or
simply brushed with oil to avoid
sticking.
Cook almost anything “campfire
style” wrapped in aluminum foil
and steamed on the grill. A little
butter or oil and onion slices add flavor
to vegetables and fish cooked in this
manner.
Add a green salad and brown rice or
other whole grain side dish to your grilled
entrees. The entire meal can be ready in
30-45 minutes and your active body will
thank you for the high quality fuel.
Recycle leftovers when time is tight.
Combine leftover grains, meat, and
Food on the

vegetables to make one-bowl meals.
Add a little olive oil and vinegar for a cold
salad or toss them into a can of lowsodium chicken broth for a quick warm
meal. Leftovers can easily be made into
sandwiches or rolled in wraps with slices
of avocado or cheese.
Breakfast for dinner can save time and
boost nutrition. Mix vegetables in with
scrambled eggs, add a salad and you’re
out the door.

These Grab-and-Go Snacks:
• 1/4 cup of nuts and an apple
• Plain low-fat Greek yogurt with fruit and cinnamon
• Sliced low-fat cheese with fresh pear slices
• Hummus and raw vegetables
• Cottage cheese with chopped cucumbers and dill
• Try the quick and easy recipe to the right for fuel on-the-go
Keeping hydrated is important too. For a
natural low-sugar drink, try seltzer water
with 1/4 cup of fruit juice. Add a slice of
lime or lemon and a straw and kick back
and enjoy. Summer is here.
