February 17 to present a seminar on digital printing and a dinner meeting. His take
on “What Will We Print?” is that print will continue to be an important part of the
marketing mix; studies have shown that email promotions only receive a 0.0001%
response rate; packaging provides the biggest growth opportunity, however inkjet
is now performing many of the tasks formerly done by flexo presses. He shared a
strategy on smart, targeted variable data/personalized printing. For a copy of the

No More “What Are We Going to Do
in Social Media” Meetings
by David Spark
S
o many organizations that I have
worked with hold meetings upon
meetings upon meetings about
“What’s our social media strategy?” or
“What are we going to do in social media?”
These meetings are a colossal waste of time.
Absolutely nothing gets accomplished. If you’re
not doing anything in social media, what do you
have to talk about? And social media engagement
is all about experimentation. It’s not about weeks
of planning until you’ve planned out everything
perfectly. It’s about doing, adjusting, and iterating.
And doing that again and again.
The decision makers, usually the people who have
zero social media experience, demand evidence.
The “show me proof” requests just stall the process.
They never add value.
What happens in such a scenario is some low level
staffer has to search the web for an article about
a similar company doing something similar. Once
they find the article they present it to the C-level
executive who initially made the demand and then
the executive finally says,“OK, go ahead and do it.”
What a waste of time.
No “social media” gets accomplished
in a “What are we going to do in social
media?” meeting
Say there are a half dozen people sitting around
the table discussing what you should and shouldn’t
do in social media. Nobody’s producing anything.
Instead of having that one hour meeting, why not
cancel that meeting and require all six people spend
that available hour writing a blog post? Now six
blog posts have been created (– an enormous social
media accomplishment). Instead of having another
meeting, spend the next free hour reading the other
blog posts, leaving comments, and promoting it to
your social networks (e.g., Twitter and Facebook).
Go into your calendar and cancel your
next two one-hour meetings. On the first
cancellation notice, indicate that every intended
meeting attendee must write a blog post (making a
huge assumption that you have a blog. If not, just
set one up in minutes at wordpress.com).
DAVID SPARK
(@dspark) is a veteran tech
journalist and founder of
the custom publishing firm
Spark Media Solutions
sparkmediasolutions.com.
He blogs regularly at Spark
Minute sparkminute.com.
On the second cancellation notice, indicate that
every meeting attendee must read the other blog
posts, leave comments, and then promote the posts
to their social networks via Twitter and Facebook.
That’s the only “let’s get started” social media
strategy any company needs.

Q2 2011 CONNECTED
Q&A With Adobe’s Brian Nemhauser
Time to Re-Image Content
A
dobe’s Brian Nemhauser, Director
of Design Product Management
and lead-off keynote speaker
at Visual Media 2011, answered some
probing questions from Connected
about the direction of digital content.
“What gets me excited
every day is thinking
about working with
designers on what should
be a transformative time
in content creation. If we
haven’t joined forces
to create
fantastic
new forms of content,
then shame on all of us. This is not
something to fear, it is an opportunity
to embrace, and it is a ton of fun!”
Nemhauser says. “I highly recommend
following our (Adobe’s) Facebook
pages for your favorite products like
InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
It’s a great way to follow along, share
your thoughts, and engage with the
design community.”
Is it necessary for
designers to understand
what the content on a tablet
or mobile device intends to
be – Newspaper? Magazine?
Does anyone care?
C
BN : One of the most exciting
things about tablet devices
is that it is forcing people to
reconsider what may have
been arbitrary boundaries
between content types.
A newspaper has always
had the assets (e.g., video,
imagery, articles, etc.) to
create a magazine-like
experience. What they have
not had is a viable digital
target to publish to. There is
no cost of printed material.
The cost comes on the
design-side, but we’re
working on that! The first
newspaper was published
in 1641. The first magazine
came around 1731. The first
known website was posted
in 1991, and the first blog in
1998. We are entering a time
where new content types
could be emerging multiple
times per year.
C
Is any format (print,
mobile, tablet, web)
that best lends itself to a
starting format from which
designers can then adapt
for other media?
BN : Great question, and the
answer will vary by designer
and by intent. If the tools are
built the right way, designers
will succeed following a
VISUAL MEDIA ALLIANCE 12
very similar workflow to what
they do now. Lots of people
talk about these changes as
if designers will need to go
back to school in order to
participate. The reality is
that designers already have
the skills they need. If you
are graphic designer working on printed materials in
InDesign, Illustrator and
Photoshop, than that’s where
you should start your work for
publishing to other media.
Some people will tell you to
design for the most constrained target (e.g., tablet,
website, etc.) first, and then
broaden out. That is a fine
way to go, but I believe
designers want to be thinking
about the best design, not
the limitations of technology.
What are the tools and
skills print designers must
leverage to be part of this
revolution in how content is
created, distributed and
consumed?
C
BN : See my earlier answer.
The truth is that a box is still
a box. An adornment is still
an adornment. Red is still
red…well…mostly. I don’t
think we want to start a color
management riot here. The
point is that the first time you
hold a tablet with an issue of
Wired magazine, you’ll get it.
Sure, there are some cool
interactive experiences, but
largely, it is a printed magazine designed for a different
trim size. We intend to
make the interactive stuff
simple enough for everyone
to participate and play.
How must designers
change their thinking
about a project destined
for more than one media?
C
BN : The important thing is
to avoid letting yourself slip
into ruts. “I need to stick to
one-color design to cut cost,”
or “I’ll just farm all the web
stuff out to a developer.”
This is a time to challenge
convention.
Maybe the client would be
better off with a pure digital
delivery. We are already
hearing of examples where
companies are wanting to
publish digital brochures to
their sales teams instead of
print. They have figured out
it will cost less to buy tablet
devices for everyone and
switch to a digital version,
plus they can include
video training that was
not possible in print.
This is a chance for
designers, particularly
graphic designers, to
re-imagine much of the
materials we see today.

he Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, in large part a
response to high-profile recalls of both imported and domesticallyproduced children’s toys and products, greatly expands the authority of
the Consumer Product Safety Commission (Commission) and regulates potentially
hazardous children’s products, among other things. Specifically, the Act establishes
lead and phthalate (e.g. plasticizers that could be found in inks, coatings and
adhesives) content limits and requires testing and certifying of products to ensure
they do not exceed these limits.
The new regulations include children’s
books and other printed materials as
products subject to the new limits and
testing requirements. The lead and
phthalates limits are currently in effect
and the testing requirements were
scheduled to go into effect in February.
Printing Industries of America and allied
associations petitioned the Commission
urging Chairman Tenenbaum to vote to
extend the stay.
In late January, the Commission
extended it to December 31, 2011.

Reporting Cash-Based Sales
M
any businesses make sales for which they do not receive immediate
payment. For example, you may sell a job on credit, or you may need to
wait for a check to clear before receiving payment.
As a seller, however, you are required to pay sales and use tax to the State Board of
Equalization in the reporting period in which the sale takes place, regardless of when
you receive payment. Furthermore, tax must be based on the total amount of the sale.
Under the Sales and Use Tax Law, sales of merchandise or other tangible personal
property are subject to tax at the time ownership of the property or title to the
property has been transferred to the buyer (or to another person at the direction
of the buyer).

Pregnancy Leave Requirement
If an employer with five or more employees provides more than four months of leave
for other types of temporary disabilities, the same leave must be made available to
women who are disabled due to pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition.
Leave can be taken before or after birth during any period of time the woman is
physically unable to work because of pregnancy or a pregnancy-related condition.
All leave taken in connection with a specific pregnancy counts toward computing the
four-month period. This includes time off needed for prenatal care, severe morning
sickness, doctor-ordered bed rest, childbirth, recovery from childbirth, or any related
medical condition.
