Give Up Your Dreams
New Zealand’sThe Phoenix Foundation are all set to return with their new and sixth studio album Give Up
Your Dreams. It’s a shrewd and vibrant reminder that in The Phoenix Foundation’s gloriously absurd world of
Technicolour pop, it’s the challenges you set yourself that reap the greatest rewards. “Give Up Your Dreams
could sound like a defeat but it represents something quite defiant, joyous and celebratory” exclaims cofrontman Samuel Scott of the record’s infectious rhythmic driven sound and optimistic feel. Channelling previous album Fandango’s beauteous side, but this time fuelled by a spit ball of irrepressible energy, Give Up
Your Dreams feels like the band’s most contemporary offering yet. With the new addition of drummer Chris
O’Connor, the album was written taking its lead from the rhythm section for the very first time; paving the
way for an all new creative process. “I was convinced we had to have a different sounding record,” explains
Scott’s counterpart singer/guitarist Lukasz Buda. “So we completely removed any trace of acoustic guitar.
It was important to leave room for the band to take it somewhere else and make way for a new vitality.”
Thematically and lyrically the group typically took inspiration from various of sources. The dazzling title-track
is a frank deglamourisation of life on the road spurred on by a conversation with dear friend, collaborator,
and fellow New Zealander Lawrence Arabia. The energetic ‘Mountain’ is the ultimate counterpoint; an afrokraut groove with layers of Television-inspired guitars and dreamscapes about the ‘money men’ controlling
the world. ‘Playing Dead’ nearly didn’t make it further than the cutting room floor but was revived thanks
to the photographs in a 1950s Time Life essay on the Ona people of Tierra Del Fuego in southern Chile and
their ghost rituals. Elsewhere in ‘Jason’ Luke sings about both the mother of his children and his ‘band wife’
(Samuel Scott) being struck down with sciatica and being reliant on string painkillers to function, touching
on the fear of ageing in the process. Album closer ‘Myth’ was inspired by the writings of St. Isidore of Seville
who in the 19th Century attempted to compile all human knowledge.

Lauren Denitzio is a maven at writing pop-punk anthems. Playing music for over a decade – beginning
with the New Brunswick punk band The Measure {sa} – we had yet to see what Denitzio could accomplish
as a sole songwriter until recently. Worriers, the Brooklyn-based band fronted by Denitzio and joined by
friends, has released the 7” “Past Lives” on No Idea Records in 2011, the 12” EP “Cruel Optimist” on Don
Giovanni Records in 2013. This summer, Worriers brings us their finest work to date, with Laura Jane Grace

Tears Of The World
Even Norwegians get the blues. On “Tears Of The World,” guitarist Knut Reiersrud and his band find themselves in the company of the Grammy-nominated, 72-year old vocalist Mighty Sam McClain, originally
from Louisiana. Together, they have dedicated themselves to the music of the deep south and have given
impressive proof that, when it comes to playing hard-driven R&B, soul or blues, it’s not where you come
from that’s important. On June 16, 2015 Mighty Sam McClain died. „Tears Of The World“ is his last album
and will remain as his legacy. The Blues- & Soulworld lost an outstanding artist.

Accordion and cello. A rare combination, but no less remarkable is the sound of the Klaus Paier and Asja
Valcic duo. Is it jazz, classical or world music? Old, new or crossover? Whatever it is, the music is timeless,
intense, always surprising, and transcends genre borders. The quest for the perfect sound of accordion
and bandoneon led Klaus Paier to an entirely new, unique playing technique that allows his instrument to
breathe and gives him the space for unrivalled stylistic and improvisational freedom, and in no way does
Asja Valcic take a back seat. She plays her “cello, that can foot it like a double bass” with “an incredible

My Working Class Hero
John Lennon would have been seventy-five on October 9th 2015. On “My Working Class Hero,” the Finnish
pianist Iiro Rantala pays tribute to this master of modern song. Rantala has demonstrated a particular gift for
making this kind of homage once before. His 2011 album “Lost Heroes” recaptured the spirit of a different
musical idol in each of its ten songs, and received the annual prize of the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik and an
ECHO jazz award, whilst Germany’s foremost broadsheet newspaper the FAZ proclaimed it as having “intelligence, humour, loads of feeling, unpredictable ideas and especially finely crafted piano playing.”In this
new John Lennon tribute, Rantala turns to the musician who is perhaps greatest of all of his ‘lost heroes’.

Trouble Don’t Last
“Blues tradition has been central to the conceptual approach of vocalist/guitarist Chris James and bassist
Patrick Rynn ever since they joined forces in Chicago in 1990. They played with the likes of Junior Wells ,
Detroit Junior, and Dave Myers, and spent five years together in Sam Lay’s blues band. They’ve backed up a
who’s who of iconic Chicago Bluesmen and been hailed for their own recordings. But they’ve never stripped
their sound down on disc quite the way they do on TROUBLE DON’T LAST. Joined only by rock-solid drummer June Core (who has spent long stretches keeping time with Robert Jr. Lockwood and Charlie Musselwhite) and two of their favorite harmonica aces, longtime collaborator and fellow VizzTone artist Rob Stone
and new ally Aki Kumar, Chris and Patrick roar through raw-boned originals and well-chosen remakes,
every one of them resounding with real-deal intensity. “— Bill Dahl (from the liner notes).

Streets Of Mumbai EP
Long Tall Deb and Colin John combine a genre-bending and refreshingly original sound on their new VizzTone EP STREETS OF MUMBAI. The richly-textured layers on these four tracks incorporate world influence
with a soul-blues base picked up on their travels throughout India, Nepal, Hawaii and the American South.
Together with a whip-smart band: Nate Hollman, organ; Melvin Powe, bass; and Jo El and Brandon Pettiford on drums, they have created forward-thinking, next-generation music crowned with an old soul. The
title track, inspired by their recent trip to India, is summed up in the line: “No better way to wake up than a
rickshaw ride at 4 a.m. on the streets of Mumbai”. The sound is complemented by the merging of eastern
influence and American Blues that is as hypnotic as it is unique. “Jailhouse” is a cheeky contemporary
rocking soul and Motown-influenced number about the non-negotiables in relationships. “Hole In My Heart”
is a classic rocker-in-the-making that warns the listener about the consequences of causing the recipient
grief. “Shine That Song Like Gold,” a collaboration with Grammy-winning lyricist Terry Abrahamson, tells the
story of the fabled “lost” Robert Johnson song. The sound is best described as the collective offspring of Tom
Waits, Martha & The Vandellas, Motown Rhythm Section, Keith Richards and Billy Gibbons (with David Lynch
and Jim Jarmusch filming.) Streets of Mumbai was produced and engineered by Michael Landolt (Maroon
5, O.A.R) at Curry House Records.

The Natural World
Land Lines is an impossible decade, some gap in history where the tines of early electric pianos shimmer
in echo chambers, baroque cellos thrum minor chords, and modern percussive rhythms build with surgical
precision, all culminating in sparing, angular pop melodies that find new creative spaces in an otherwise
overpopulated musical landscape. Land Lines arose from the ashes of Matson Jones, when Martina Grbac,
Anna Mascorella, and Ross Harada regrouped and began crafting new songs. After releasing their self-titled
LP on Denver’s Cash Cow Records, Anna left the group to attend graduate school; James Han, who had
been recording and touring with Nathaniel Rateli and Gregory Alan Isakov, joined and helped shape the
new sonic direction of the band.In early 2014, Land Lines recruited Xandy Whitesel to record/mix and TW
Walsh (Suan Stevens, The Shins, David Bazan) to master a second LP, The Natural World. With sultry songs
that saunter, thrust, and linger, The Natural World is a treasure trove of heart breaking songs of love, loss,
and human nature and ushers in the next era of Land Lines’s sonic exploration.Land Lines has performed
at venues such as the Boulder Theatre and Red Rocks Amphitheater, and has shared the stage with artists
such as Devotchka, Nathaniel Rateli, Esme Patterson and Black Heart Procession. In 2015, ahead of their
debut on Misra Records, the band performed a show backed by the Colorado Symphony.

Soundtracks - OST
Death Waltz
The Hyena - The The
Death Waltz Recording Company are proud to bring you a modern classic from one of Britain’s most revered
bands. Directed by Gerard Johnson, HYENA is a breakneck thriller dealing with Police corruption in West
London with an incredibly atmospheric score by Matt Johnson aka The The. Following super-bent copper
Michael, HYENA highlights the dark and grimy side of being on the take, with none of the flash and glamour
usually seen in movies like this. The The – scoring their second movie with Gerard Johnson after TONY
– give the film an evocative soundtrack that weaves between seduction and horror. The score to HYENA
comes across like a fever dream; vignettes of hip-hop and house beats with incredible synthesizer melodies
laid on top, threatening electronic effects roaring like a Formula 1 car engine, even choral sections with
haunted vocals that show the inevitable influence of Vangelis. Instrumentation is eclectic, with electric and
acoustic guitars creating anticipation and dissonance while steel drums and Eastern strings subconsciously
illustrate the diversity of the area. Similarly, HYENA combines its musical influences to produce a score that
reflects the danger of Michael’s situation but also the exhilaration. No matter how you feel about corruption
or the police, HYENA is essential.

Aberration Of Light
We’re proud to present brand new work from Chicago-based sound artist Olivia Block in the form of
“Aberration of Light.” An accomplished composer of electro-acoustic music, Block has premiered her
work all over the globe in the form of both solo and collaborative live performances, sound installations at highly-regarded art institutions, and lectures at academic establishments. This conceptually
inspired work was originally conceived in 2011 as a four-speaker soundtrack for a collaboration with
two expanded cinema artists using manipulated light from film-less 35mm projectors. For NNA’s 82nd
release, the artist offers us a 31-minute reworked version of this material for the cassette format. In
essence, this piece is as much about the absence of sound as much as the presence of it. Slowly
materializing from total silence, Block utilizes acoustic sounds, including various mechanical sound
recordings of 35mm projectors, blended with a palette of electronics to create intricately assembled
fields of sonic depth. The result is richly ominous without being overtly aggressive, as the compositional arc of the piece follows a swelling, almost respiratory motion of expanding and contracting. The
dynamic nature of Aberration of Light is enhanced by Block’s delicate use of white noise as a textural guide, calling attention to the acoustic sounds at its valleys, and overwhelming the listener with
ferocity and harshness at its peaks. As the piece progresses, harmonic tonalities begin to emerge,
reinforced by the use of clarinet and bass clarinet from fellow Chicagoan musicians James Falzone
and Jason Stein, respectively, seamlessly integrating themselves into the mass of electronics. The
quieter moments of the piece command deeper listening, to the point where the sounds of one’s own
listening environment become indistinguishable from the recording, calling to mind Cage’s ideas on
the impossibility of true silence. Block claims to bring an emotional element to her work which can be
both heard and felt through the delicacy and dynamic nature of the recording, further deepened by a
brilliant use of control, precision, power, and patience.

The Silver Lake Chorus
NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!
When The Silver Lake Chorus began in January 2010, it wasn’t aiming for fame, record sales, or even a
single sold-out show. The plan was: get a bunch of singers together and make music, pure and simple. A
flyer for the very first open audition read, “We sing everything from Radiohead to Rihanna.” That anythinggoes vibe lasted about one rehearsal. Starting a chorus in Los Angeles meant access to a slew of highly
qualified vocalists, and as the bar for entry skyrocketed, the nature of the group quickly shifted from community chorus to professional-sounding ensemble. At the same time, establishing the chorus in Silver Lake
made the underlying aesthetic of the group organically skew in an indie direction. But it wasn’t until Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee hopped on board that the chorus’s already narrowing focus truly hit its mark.
Friends with a founding member, Lee heard the chorus sing their arrangement of Beck’s “Lonesome Tears”
at an early rehearsal and was blown away by how the song had been “reinvented into this massive Russian
Gregorian chant.” Immediately, he got an idea: instead of singing covers, Lee suggested the chorus take a
completely original indie rock approach to the ancient choral art form. He signed on to produce their debut
album and reached out to other artists and friends, asking them to write new music for the chorus. “Most
people would think they can’t approach Beck or Tegan and Sara, but as a songwriter, it’s such an honor to
have your song sung by someone else, especially twenty people with great voices. So I just started putting
it out there,” Lee remembers. Lee knew he could provide TSLC with “access to a level of songwriters who
could set this apart from other choral experiences,” and he was right. Songs soon poured in from artists
like Sia, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Aimee Mann, Tegan and Sara, The Bird and the Bee, Ben Gibbard, John
Roderick (The Long Winters), A.C. Newman (The New Pornographers), The Flaming Lips, and of course, Lee
himself.

Holy Ghost Party is the Baltimore-based duo of Zachary Utz and Dave Jacober. Bayou Music, their first

Influenced equally by early 20th-century Delta Blues, 1970s kraut electronica, and Indian Ragas, Bayou
Music is blue collar psychedelia, a naïve but skilled mutation of single notes into swampy disarray. While the
music consists only of guitar, drums, and vocals, Bayou Music subverts the derivative cliches of “rock and

classic anti-riffing and instrumental indifference that drifts aimlessly downstream.

Music – a “mix” or sampling of personal experimentations spanning from 2009 to the present day, intended
specifically for the cassette format. Higgins, perhaps best known for his guitar work in avant-garde music
group Zs and production work with Future-Past Studios, is able to accurately demonstrate his versatility
as both a composer and performer through this diverse collection of recording studies. Very little territory
is left uncharted as Higgins makes use of piano, harpsichord, synthesizer, guitar, violin, sampler, computer
processing, and even group ensemble to communicate his unique musical vision. Bringing a genuinely
modern voice to composition, the artist draws on contemporary pop culture influence (underground art
rock, independent pop, noise) along with nods to 60’s minimalism (Riley, Glass, Meredith Monk) and classical Western electro-acoustic composition. The studies on this release range from the highly dissonant to the
more consonant as Higgins blends found sound and electro-acoustic texture with harmonic notes, creating
further originality by combining elements of improvisation with written score. Pieces like “Pattern Select”
blast apart with pointillistic, colorful synth programming that builds its power through the precise use of
dissonance, recalling the work of Babbitt, Boulez, and the French pioneers of early musique concrete. The
“Curves, Points, Lines” series of tracks demonstrates the inventive studio layering of unorthodox acoustic
instrument sounds, as Higgins dissects the intricacies of the various sounds made by the violin and rearranges them into something completely new. “Live At Oberlin” brings the music outside of the studio into the
arena of performance, as Higgins lends his abilities to a group improvisation setting, using guitar and laptop
to build new sonic worlds together with the Mivos Quartet on string instruments. “Social Death Mixtape”
succeeds at showcasing Higgins’ prowess not only as a musician, but as a generally well-rounded artist,
whether its as a composer and arranger, instrumentalist, live performer, electronic producer, or studio engineer. The experience of this release is further enhanced by the originality of creating an “audio sketchbook”
for the modern composer by tapping into one of the earliest and most classical essences of the cassette
tape medium - the “mix.”

Pure Bathing Culture 12” EP
Daniel Hindman and Sarah Versprille began writing songs together in 2009 while living in Brooklyn, NY.
In 2011, the duo packed up their lives, moved to Portland, OR and realized that it was time to put a name
to the new project -- Pure Bathing Culture was born. Through various serendipitous connections, multiinstrumentalist and producer Richard Swift heard their early demos and immediately invited them to record
with him at his National Freedom studio in Cottage Grove, OR. Pure Bathing Culture’s S/T EP is an elegant
collection of four beautifully crafted songs, constructed with smooth melodies embodying the nostalgia of
soft soulful 80s pop but with a freshness all of their own.
