The Takaya Tours
On Thursday, May 21st our class went on a field trip to North Vancouver to Cates Park.
There were people who helped us, their names were Dennis, Cease and Guy. People
separated us into two groups. The first group would go canoeing, I was in the first group.
The second group would go on a nature walk. The people in my team were Katie, Josh V.,
Nick, Julia, Aleia, Tyler, Kalbe, Chantal, Cameron K., Heather, Delaney, myself, Dennis,
Guy and Mr. Michaud. On canoe was the Chief Dan George. When you paddle, the canoe
paddle would show a wolf but if you turned it around you would see a black eye. The
black eye meant you were ready for war. The wolf meant you wanted peace. We canoed
all the way to the light house, then Dennis taught us about how Aboriginal people got to
other lands. After that my group went on the nature walk. We learnt about ourselves
and how our bodies work in the stomach. Then Cease showed us huckleberries and let
us eat one. Then we went to see the old cedar canoe and then we got to go to the
beach. On the way home we saw a wild plum tree, a wild grape tree, and salmon berries. To get there you had to go through a path in the forest, then you had to climb over
rocks, well that’s what I did anyway. That’s how we got to the beach. At the beach we
saw lots of crabs, rocks, and sea shells, also a lot of water. I was collecting sea shells. A
lot of people starting chasing me with dead crabs, let me give you a hint it was my
friend, and her name is Katie. Then we left to have lunch and saw two eagles. One was
on a tree and another one was on the railing of the bridge. While we were waiting people were playing on their phones and I was talking to my friend. Then they came and we
had lunch. After we met at the same spot we started in and we all sang the hello song,
good day song, and the women’s warrior chant. Then we gave cards to them and said
our goodbyes and left. So on a scale of one to ten, I’d give it a ten out of ten. That was
my trip to Takaya Tours at Cates Park.

My Takaya Tour
I went to Cates park in North Vancouver. The leaders names were Dennis, Guy, and
Cease. They were from the Isleil-Waututh band of the Coast Salish nation. Our class was
split into two groups. One group went for a nature walk and the other group went canoeing. First I went canoeing. My canoe was named the Dancing Serpent. The other canoe was the Chief Dan George. My leader for the boat was Guy. I asked Guy what could
be found in the water and he said jellyfish, salmon and maybe mud sharks at the very
bottom of the ocean. A little bit past the light house we stopped and both canoes were
side by side. The other leader for the other canoe was Dennis. Dennis told us a story.
When he finished we raced to the light house. The other team won. Then we paddled
back to the dock, we switched and we went for the nature walk. The first thing we saw
was a huckleberry bush. We all got to taste one. They were really good! Then we saw a
maple tree and it had sap coming out of it. The sap was really sticky. Then we saw a cedar tree and beside it was a cedar canoe. It was huge but fenced off. Then we saw salmon berries. We all also got to taste one. Finally we went down to the beach. We saw the
other group in the canoe and they came to shore and offered peace. We walked down
to the beach. After we explored we walked to the bus and got our lunches. After lunch
we went and sang the Halq’emeylem Welcome Song and Goodbye Song. Once we finished all the girls and Cease sang the Women’s Warrior Chant. I enjoyed it.

Takaya Tour
On my trip to Takaya Tours I was so excited and nervous. When we got there, we got split
into two groups, one for the nature walk and one for the canoe ride. The team I was on
went on the canoe first and I was the leader with Josh V. on the Chief Dan George. Sanvir
and Josh B. were the leaders of the Dancing Serpent Canoe. When we were half way on the
canoe we stopped so one of the canoe helpers named Dennis could tell a story and while
he told the story a boat went by and made big waves and Josh was
frightened. On the way back we raced and our boat won. After when
we docked there was an eagle sitting on the railing on the steps.
After the canoe ride we did the nature walk with Cease and another
helper. She told us about the berries and the oldest tree and what
part of the tree the Aboriginal people used for the canoe. After the
walk we had our lunch break. During our lunch break I talked to
Sanvir and took a picture of the water. After our break we sang a
couple of Halqu’emeyelm songs for the helpers Dennis, Guy and Cease and then we went
home. I wish I could go there again.

My Trip to Cates Park
I was shy at first when I got off the bus at Cates Park. There
were three people. Their names were Dennis, Guy and Cease.
Dennis and Guy were in charge of the canoeing and Cease was
in charge of the nature walk. The class was split up into two
groups, one would go canoeing with Dennis and Guy and the
other group would go on the nature walk with Cease. I got to
go canoeing first so we all had to pick partners. Mr. Michaud
picked me to be his partner because I was the tallest but Dennis put me with Tyler because he was talking something about weight. We left the dock
and started paddling. Dennis said that they had a winter village where you would go in
winter. We turned around and Dennis asked Guy if he wanted to race so we raced back to
the docks and we won. But on our way there we saw an eagle sitting on the docks. Mr.
Michaud took pictures, then we docked the canoes. We went back to the bus to eat lunch.
Next we did the nature walk and I learned about salmon berries and another type of berries. I had a lot of fun but the most fun was the canoe.
