Graduate Studies Student Orientation Handbook

Artifact 7-7
Artifact 7-7
Graduate Student Orientation Handbook
•
This artifact was developed in the Summer 2010 semester for my internship with the Office of
Graduate Studies.
•
This artifact is the new and updated Graduate Student Orientation Handbook that new and
current graduate students can use as a resource while navigating their graduate education at
FGCU.
•
This project addresses the following Florida Educational Leadership Standards and the
substandards that apply: Standard 1: Vision & Standard 7: Technology
•
I learned how to use InDesign to create a table of contents and include information for our
handbook. I learned how to create links within the page as well as external links to website and
emails. After researching other SUS schools, I decided to create an electronic PDF handbook
instead of printing them for the students. With our commitment to environmental sustainability
and environmental friendly policies, I thought it would be best to showcase this in our saving of
paper. We added more photos and linked everything so students can use this resource with
websites and emails that are readily available. We will be giving an orientation program to the
students attending Fall 2010 orientation and the link to this handbook will be featured in it so
they can use this resource.

REGISTRATION & CALENDARS
OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR
McTarnaghan Hall, First Floor, (239) 590-7980, [email protected]
http://www.fgcu.edu/registrar
Academic Records
The Office of the Registrar is responsible for insuring the confidentiality of all student records
and has been designated by the University as the official student records custodian. The Family
Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 guarantees students the right of protected
information that is not classified as Directory Information as defined by University policy.
FGCU defines Directory Information as any item that can be released to the general public
without the consent of the student.
Grades
FGCU does not automatically mail grades. However, grades are available to students through
GULFLINE. Grades are due from faculty within two days of the end of each semester. Grades
will be available for viewing approximately one week after the term ends. For additional information concerning grades, refer to the University Catalog for FGCU’s grading system and
policies.
Transcripts
Official copies of a student’s FGCU transcripts can be requested through the Office of the
Registrar and Gulfline. There is a $10.00 charge for each official transcript requested. Unofficial
transcripts can be obtained, at no charge, through GULFLINE and the Office of the Registrar.
A PDF transcript request form is available on the website: http://www.fgcu.edu/registrar/forms.
html.
GULFLINE provides students with the ability to print a personal web-copy of their transcript
in addition to requesting official and unofficial copies. The personal web-copy is intended for
your personal use. At this time the web-copy does not display your name or UIN for security
reasons. The official and unofficial copies are intended for use when providing grade or course
information to a third party person or agency such as an employer, scholarship agency, transfer
institution, etc. Students are also able to request official or unofficial transcripts from the Office of the Registrar.
Please note that official transcripts cannot be released when obligations to FGCU have not been satisfied.
Forms
Office of the Registrar forms can be found at: http://www.fgcu.edu/registrar/forms.html.

state residency for tuition purposes is not automatic. Supporting, hardcopy documents must be
submitted with the reclassification form. By state law, requests must be submitted prior to the
last day of late registration of a new term. The reclassification form is available at: http://www.

FGCU’s web-based student information system is referred to as “Gulfline". To use Gulfline,
students must have a User ID, also known as a UIN (University Identification Number) and a
PIN (Personal ID Number). Both are provided at the time of admission. Gulfline logon information is recognized as an electronic signature; therefore, students are encouraged to protect
and memorize this information as soon as possible without sharing or writing it down. Gulfline
logon information may be obtained in the following manners: 1.) For immediate assistance, students may present a valid photo ID in the Office of the Registrar; or
2.) If students are unable to come to campus during business hours, the student may mail or
fax a written, signed request along with a copy of a valid photo ID (only drivers license or Eagle

When mailing or faxing the request, please note Gulfline logon information will be mailed to
your address on record with the University. For security reasons, logon information will not be
