May 31 Tue Athens - Eleusis - Corinth - Nauplion
Breakfast and check out of rooms. At 8 am we start our journey to the south of
Greece. We will visit Eleusis, which was an ancient centre of religious devotion
that culminated in the annual Eleusinian mysteries. We will continue on to the
historic Corinth Canal where we will have a brief stop for photos. We will visit
the ancient city of Corinth and Acrocorinth (the citadel of Corinth) before driving
to Nauplion, for check-in at Hotel Park, followed by dinner and overnight. (B, D)
Nauplion - Mycenae - Epidaurus - Nauplion

After breakfast drive to Mycenae, to visit the remains of the prehistoric citadel
fortified with the Cyclopean Walls, the Lionesses’ Gate, the remains of the
Mycenaean Palace and the Tomb of King Agamemnon in which we will actually
enter. After a short lunch break we continue on to Epidaurus the Sanctuary of
Asclepeios, ancient god of healing. We see the best-preserved ancient theater
in all of Greece, famous for the harmony of its design and the perfection of its
remarkable acoustics, easily accommodating 12,000 people. After the tour return
to hotel in Nauplion for dinner & overnight. (B, D)
Jun 2 Thu Nauplion - Olympia
Morning departure from Nauplion towards Olympia. Upon arrival, visit the
archaeological site in Olympia, see the Temple of Zeus built by Livon, which
contained the 12 meter high statue by Phedeas, one of the seven wonders of the
ancient world and The Temple of Hera where the Olympic flame was lit, also visit the
museum across the road which contains the 4th Century BC statue of Hermes by
Praxiteles and a number of other finds from excavations including the Nike of Victory
by Paeonios. Check-in at Hotel Neda in Olympia for dinner and overnight. (B, D)

Arrive Athens (mid-afternoon), upon arrival transfer to Parthenon Hotel. Dinner
and overnight at your Athens hotel. (B, D)

Athens
After breakfast, start a full day guided walking tour of Athens in the famous
Acropolis Hill and the Acropolis Museum. Climb up the Acropolis Hill and see
the temple of Athena Nike, the Parthenon and Erechtheion. From the top,
we enjoy the views to the Odeon, the theatre of Dionyssos, and Philopappou
Hill. Then we walk along the pedestrian street towards the Acropolis Museum.
Here we will see all the findings excavated on the hill and the surrounding areas.
Return to hotel at around 5p.m. Evening at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Hotel
Parthenon in Athens. (B,D)

Athens
We start our bus tour at 9 a.m. to enjoy a panoramic sightseeing of the city. We
will visit the Panathenian Stadium and will see the Constitution Square where we
stop to take pictures of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the evzones in
front of the Parliament Building. We will then see the Temple of Olympian Zeus,
Hadrian’s Arch, the Academy, the University of Athens, the National Library.
After the tour, free time in Plaka or return to hotel on your own. Dinner and
overnight at Hotel Parthenon in Athens. (B, D)
May 30 Mon
Athens
After breakfast we will walk to Mars Hill (the Areopagus), to see the spot where
Paul preached to the Athenians. We will then continue on foot to the Ancient
Agora where we will visit the ruins of the archaeological site and we will see the
Stoa of Attalos. After a short lunch break we will take a walk in the Flea Market
at Monastiraki. Return to hotel in early afternoon. Evening at leisure. Dinner and
overnight at Hotel Parthenon in Athens. (B, D)

After breakfast drive towards Patras, the second largest port of Greece and cross
over the bridge from Rion to Antirrion, passing by Nafpaktos and arriving in Delphi.
Visit the archaeological site, Sanctuary of Apollo and the Treasury of the Athenians.
Dinner and overnight at Hotel Parnassos, Delphi. (B, D)

Morning visit to Delphi’s archaeological museum containing masterpieces of
ancient Greek sculpture such as the bronze Charioteer and the famous athlete
Aghias. Afternoon free in Delphi for leisure. Dinner and overnight in Delphi. (B, D)
Delphi - Athens - Lesbos (Mytilene)

Depart Delphi early in the morning for Athens Airport for your flight with Aegean
Airlines to Lesbos. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon visit to the Lesbos
Archaeological Museum, followed by free time on the island. Dinner and overnight at

After breakfast, we will board the bus and enjoy a scenic drive by the old town
where we see many churches and also renowned neo-classical mansions scattered
throughout the city, particularly in the old aristocratic neighborhoods. We will see
the old harbor, which was Paul’s arrival point to the city. We will continue on to visit
the old castle, called Kastro at where we’ll enjoy the wonderful views of the city. On
our return, we will pass by Theophilos and Teriade Museums containing precious
collections (optional visit). Afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Heliotrope
Boutique Hotel in Lesvos. (B, D)

Lesbos - Ayvalik - Pergamon - Izmir
Take the morning ferry at 9:00, arriving in Ayvalik at 10:30 am. Meet with your
guide, Cenk Eronat and transfer to Pergamon to visit to the Acropolis and Red
Basilica followed by arrival in Izmir. Dinner & overnight at Mövenpick Hotel. (B, D)

Visit the old Smyrna and Agora followed by the St. John Church. Visit Kemeralti
bazaar and Alsancak area. Dinner & overnight at your hotel. (B, D)

Drive to Sardis capital of the ancient Lydia where the first coin of the world is invented.
See the ruins of the 1st century; Synagogue, gymnasium, and Temple of Artemis. Tour
of Hierapolis, the ancient healing site with thermal waters and spectacular travertine
terraces. Visit the Temple of Apollo and Necropolis. Dinner & overnight at the Lycus
River Hotel in Pamukkale. (B, D)

After breakfast proceed to visit Aphrodisias, famous for its sanctuary of
Aphrodite, the city’s patron goddess. Aphrodisias enjoyed a long and prosperous
existence from the first century B.C. through the sixth century A.D. Today, many
of the city’s ancient monuments remain standing, and excavations have unearthed
numerous fine marble statues and other artifacts. After your visit, drive to
Kusadasi and check in to your hotel. Dinner and overnight at Marina Hotel. (B, D)

After breakfast, we will visit the famous ancient city of Ephesus, walk its marble
streets, and visit the magnificent Terrace houses, the Ephesus Archaeological
Museum and the Basilica of St. John. Optional visit to the House of Virgin Mary.
Lunch at a carpet farm followed by observation of the production of beautiful,
hand-woven carpets. Dinner & overnight in Kuşadası. (B, L, D)
Jun 13 Mon Kuşadası - Didyma - Miletos - Priene - Kuşadası
Visit the Greco-Roman city of Priene, followed by a visit to the Miletus theatre
where Paul spoke to the locals and see the new museum. Lastly, visit the Apollo
Temple in Didyma, the famous oracle center of Asia Minor. Return to Kusadasi
for dinner and overnight. (B, D)

Enjoy a relaxing boat tour along the Turkish coast today with a privately chartered

Departure for Cappadocia via Istanbul at 1:00 pm arriving Cappadocia at 5:25
pm. (TK 2321). Upon arrival; visit Uchisar, Pigeon Valley. Dinner and overnight in

(Optional early morning balloon ride 5:00-7:00 am). After breakfast visit the
underground city, Goreme Open Air Museum and Avanos pottery town. Enjoy

treasures of Greek and Roman antiquities discovered in Turkey. After lunch on
own, visit Topkapi Palace, home of the Ottoman rulers for 400 years, now a
museum housing a world renowned collection of jewelry and porcelain. Dinner &

Drive to Eminönü and visit the Egyptian Bazaar. Afterwards, board your private
boat to enjoy a boat ride on the Bosphorus, seeing both the European and
Asian shores. Take the funicular from Kabatas to Istiklal Street. Visit St. Antoine
Church. Have free time for lunch and strolling on the street. Meet with the group
later; visit Galata Tower, then return to hotel for dinner and overnight. (B, D)

We will draw on the rich resources of Turkey and Greece and BIC students’

The ancient world comes alive as we recall the Odyssey at Troy, read St. Paul’s letter
to the Ephesians in ancient Ephesus, Plato’s Apology in the Athenian agora, and more.

GTX 4V99 Great Texts of Near East
The ancient Greco-Roman and medieval Christian worlds come together in the
millennium-long culture of Byzantium. We will study great texts indebted to this
legacy, especially in its long-lived Eastern capitol.
Understand how culture and tradition are established, subverted, and recovered in
great texts from Church Fathers like Gregory of Nyssa to contemporary authors like
Nikos Kazantzakis and Orhan Pamuk.
GTX 3331 Great Texts in Christian Spirituality
PHI 3310 Classical Philosophy
Inspiring works of Christian spirituality come to life—and bring new life to us—as we
explore such mothers, fathers, and saints of the church as Athanasius, Macrina, Basil the
Great, Gregory of Nyssa, and more.
Walk in the shoes of great Greek philosophers from Thales to Aristotle, explore
their questions in search of true wisdom, and see firsthand that “philosophy begins
in wonder.”
