15.Diapason, 2014
This Nicolas Alquin sculpture features old oak with
burned patina and lime. Diapason was exhibited by Guy
Pieters Gallery, Knokke le Zoute, Belgium (June 2014).
Alquin was born in Brussels in 1958 and now lives and
works in Bagneux, France.
Born into a family of artists, Nicolas Alquin studied the
restoration of artworks in the Musée des Arts et Traditions populaires, and later works in the studios of sculptors Reinhoud d’Haese and Etienne-Martin. He has since
developed his own artistic lexicon, using two main materials: wood (direct cut technique) and beeswax (cut and
shaped directly from the mass and often cast in bronze).
From the very start, Nicolas Alquin has worked in wood.
His favored material is oak, after immersion in water,
ridding itself of tannin. He has always been committed to
driftwood, with its ruggedness, its density, and its almost
everlasting hardness, which has become a long-term accomplice, a “substantial ally.”
Being a sculptor, he builds up this story in large primitive
forms that reinvent the past and link to our own present
day. The tall sculptures, carved out of the oaken heart,
overtake the space and assume unknown roles and volumes. Alquin deliberately carves out deep cutouts with
determined, symmetrical outlines, restrainedly violent.
There are unexpected shapes wrought by the sculptor’s
own hand, providing them with a new singular power.

2. The Good Life At Sea
Get away to the South African bush! For six days and five nights you and your guests will have
exclusive use of the Izingwe Lodge, the private South African safari lodge home of internationally
acclaimed hospitality designer Trisha Wilson. Izingwe (the Zulu word for “leopard”) Lodge is part
of the 82,000-acre Welgevonden Private Game Reserve, located in the Waterburg mountain region
about three hours north of Johannesburg. Welgevonden is home to the Big Five (elephant, lion,
leopard, rhinoceros, Cape buffalo), as well as numerous other animal species.
Three couples will experience the trip of a lifetime on M/Y CRU, a 96-foot Westship Private Yacht.
The charter will begin and end in Palm Beach with seven days and six nights of High Season cruising in South Florida. With an experienced captain, mate, and stew, you will enjoy the crystal blue
waters off the Florida Coast. Choose from several Florida routes, including Palm Beach, Boca Raton,
and Fort Lauderdale. This is the ultimate in luxury travel!
Izingwe Lodge features three guest villas (two king villas, one double/double villa), which are appointed with African art and artifacts. Two of the villas feature open air salas, or thatched roof
lounge areas, just off the balcony. Izingwe’s design incorporates the beauty of the natural surroundings, from the open-air lodge, to the Boma, where guests dine al fresco before a welcoming fire, to
the Hide, a prime location for viewing animals gathered at the nearby watering hole.
Each day begins with a morning game drive around the Welgevonden reserve guided by your own
experienced game ranger, where guests may view and photograph many species of animals. In the
late afternoon, another game drive concludes with snacks and “sundowners” while you enjoy the
breathtaking views. Days are free to relax, read, or swim.
CRU offers indoor and outside dining and a fully equipped flybridge and sundeck. The main salon
converts into a surround sound theater for watching movies or events. There are three staterooms—
master king, VIP queen, and twins/king—each with in-suite heads, TV, and individual A/C. While in
Palm Beach, the boat’s guests will also have access to its 32-foot Intrepid tender.

6. Rebecca Warren, Totem (e.),
2008
Handmade in clay, cast in bronze, and subsequently painted with
pastel shades of blue, pink, and yellow, Rebecca Warren’s Totem
(e.) alludes to a body suspended in space, recalling the thin, elongated figural sculptures of 20th-century artist Alberto Giacometti.
Like much of Warren’s work, Totem (e.) straddles the line between
disparate and seemingly contradictory ideas, holding itself tentatively between figuration and abstraction, assembly and breakdown, seriousness and humor. While Warren’s adoption of bronze
is a recent development in her practice, her desire to reinterpret
and reinvigorate sculptural conventions in material, style, and subject matter is a thread that runs throughout her career.

LIVE AUCTION RULES
You may pay for your purchases with cash, Visa,
MasterCard, or American Express. Checks will only
be accepted up to $1,000. All sales are final, and all
items must be paid for by May 23, 2016. In the event
that items are not paid for by May 23, 2016, the item
will be available to the next highest bidder until sold.
All general auction rules previously stated apply
to the live auction. The live auction will take place
during the seated dinner at the Art Ball on April
23, 2016. Descriptions of the live auction are listed
in the auction catalog. If you wish to place a bid,
simply raise your bid card to be recognized by the
auctioneer and his spotters.
TRANSFER OF ITEMS
Auction items will not be allowed to leave the
Museum on the night of the Ball. Delivery Limited,
Inc. will deliver all items in the silent and live auctions to the winning bidders.
CONDITIONS OF SALE
Unless otherwise stated, all items are sold “AS IS”
and are not exchangeable. The bidder understands
that all items have been solicited in good faith and
that all descriptions, representations, and values
associated with an item are based on information
supplied by the donor. Values are approximate.
Some items may have restrictions. Where trips and
special events are involved, it is recommended that
plans be made far enough in advance to accommodate both the purchaser and the donor. All sales are
final, and the bid confirmed by the official auction
records is not negotiable. All items must be paid
for by May 23, 2016. In the event that items are not
paid for by May 23, 2016, the item will be available
to the next highest bidder until sold. If the original
purchaser does not claim the item, the original
purchaser will not be entitled to a refund, and the
original purchaser’s payment will be considered a
donation to the Dallas Museum of Art. Most certificates are valid for one year from date of purchase,
unless otherwise stated.
S I L E N T AU C T I O N R U L E S
All general auction rules previously stated apply to
the silent auction. The silent auction item descriptions and restrictions are listed on the individual bid
sheets for each silent auction item. All values stated
are approximate. To place a bid in the silent auction,
you must raise the existing bid by the minimum
increment amount preprinted for the item. All bids
are binding once they have been made. At 11:00
p.m. the silent auction will close. Please do not
attempt to place additional bids.
