how much living space does the average UK home have?
why choosing bedroom
furniture that maximises
living space is important
The need to maximise space in your home has
grown in the UK over the years with many people
feeling that their homes just aren’t big enough[2].
Research from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) suggests that consumers are right to
be concerned. Restricted space has been shown
to impact on basic lifestyle needs, such as having
enough space to store possessions or even to
entertain friends[1].
There have even been more extreme cases where
a lack of adequate living space has shown to have
a big impact on a person’s health, education and
family relationships[1].
In fact, there is evidence that three quarters of
people in new home believe a lack of space a “key
problem”, and 69 per cent say they do not even
have enough room for their possessions [4].

how some people are resolving
their bedroom space problem…
Our homes are getting so over crowded and in need of more storage
space that many of us are resorting to using storage units to create
extra space. “More people are living alone in smaller homes without
garages or attics,” says Rodney Walker, chief executive of the
Self Storage Association (SSA)[5].

the importance of measuring
maximising light and space with mirrors
Before you begin designing your bedroom, it is important you measure up the

how light affects your bedroom’s colour scheme
Why is it that one colour can look stunning in one bedroom and
unwelcoming in another? A neutral colour for example can look
stylish in one part of your home but grey and dull in another. The
reason is the quality of the light that room receives, and that will vary
depending on whether the room faces north, south, east or west.
north-facing bedrooms
The light in this room is cold and limited. But the light will remain steady, so it won’t change much
throughout the course of the day. You’re best choosing light colours to make the most of the natural
light available to you. Avoid grey and opt for pink, pale yellows or creamy whites. If you’re prepared to
UHO\RQDUWL¿FLDOOLJKWWKHQDULFKHUFRORXUVXFKDVDUHGRUSXUSOHZLOOEULQJZDUPWKWR\RXUEHGURRP
south-facing bedrooms
These rooms are brimming with warm light, giving you the option of picking colours that are either
warm (yellows, oranges, red) or cool (blue, violet, green). Just remember, with plenty of light already
pouring into the room warm shades may be overbearing. So more subtle colourways may be a
wiser choice.
east-facing bedrooms
This kind of bedroom will get most of its light in the mornings. That means your colours will look
warmer and then get cooler as the day continues. If you don’t want your room to sparkle with colour in
the early hours you should consider blackout blinds.
west-facing bedrooms
Light will hit this room in the afternoons, meaning your colours will be cooler in the morning and warmer
in the evening. If you tend to be in your bedroom during the evenings then grey or cream-based
neutrals that bring a spacious feel are probably your best choice of colour. Another option is to pick a
cool colour that is complemented by warm light.
If you’re not sure of what colour scheme to use in your bedroom décor, you could always paint some

the wardrobe guide
Getting the balance right between choosing an effective
storage solution and a beautiful piece of bedroom furniture.
A wardrobe is a piece of furniture that
is designed to dominate the room
it is in. They are as much statement
pieces as they are practical storage
spaces, and a wardrobe’s size
makes it only second to the bed in
terms of importance in the ranks of
bedroom furniture.
Wardrobes are a large investment, in every sense, which
is why it is vital to take your time and choose wardrobe
furniture that will complement the space and décor of your
bedrooms for years to come.

on how to plan and successfully choose from our range
of wardrobe furniture, starting with what you should be
considering before looking at our wardrobe types.
wardrobe storage requirements
An important question you have to ask yourself is: will
your new wardrobe suit the type of clothes you want it to
VWRUH")RUH[DPSOHLI\RXDUHVWRULQJORQJFRDWVRUIXOO
length dresses inside your wardrobe, you need to check
WKHKHLJKWRIWKH¿[HGUDLOLQVLGHEHIRUHSXUFKDVH
Consider the combination of wardrobe spaces you need
to accommodate for your taste in clothing. That means
choosing long hanging space for dresses and coats,
double hanging space for trousers and blouses, and
shelves for t-shirts, jumpers and accessories.
The positioning of your bedroom wardrobes also needs
serious consideration. To prevent from having a ‘clutteredORRNLQJ¶EHGURRPPDNHVXUH\RX¿W\RXUZDUGUREHDORQJ
a wall with a foot or more of empty space both in front of it
and on either side. This amount of room is also vital if you
are considering putting a TV or some other form of home
entertainment system in your wardrobe, as the doors will
need to be left open.
what kind of wardrobe is right for you and your bedroom?
A wardrobe’s design can be categorised in one of several ways: three-door wardrobes,
double-door wardrobes, wardrobes with drawers, or wardrobes with sliding doors. There is a
range of styles that can be applied to these categories. Here are some of the most common…
difference between a
wardrobe and an armoire
A wardrobe is different from an
armoire because it has a more
streamlined shape, a simpler
design without ornate carvings
and the option of a bar for
hanging clothes on the inside.
did you know?
The word origin for “wardrobe”
is old norse. The first known use
of the word “wardrobe” comes
from the late middle ages, it is
believed in the year 1387.[x]
double-door wardrobes
These are the most common traditional
wardrobes. They tend to include shelves on
the inside for storing clothes and some also
have drawers below the door on the outside
of the wardrobe.
mirrored wardrobes
Opting for a mirrored wardrobe door in your
selection will save you having to hang a mirror
on your bedroom walls. Plus it will make the
bedroom appear light and spacious.

maximise your storage space, particularly for
clothing and bedding.
bedroom furniture:
three-door and four-door wardrobes
Triple (plus) wardrobes are the perfect
storage option for a big bedroom. Similar to
double-door wardrobes, there tends to be
a bar built inside for hanging clothes and
shelves feature too. Three-door and fourdoor wardrobes can also include drawers.

also use a little more space but they are
much more versatile, as you can move and
change the bedroom layout. Plus, if you
decide to move you can take your bedroom
furniture with you.
hinged door wardrobes VS sliding door wardrobes
slider wardrobes
hinged wardrobes
Sliding door wardrobes are the perfect wardrobe
storage solution when space is limited or you want to
simply maximise bedroom space. A sliding mirror door
has a minimum of at least two panels. These panels
run parallel of each other and slide along tracks at the
bottom of the doorway.
A great alternative to slider wardrobes, hinged
wardrobe doors allow for access to the entire
wardrobe space at once, unlike sliding doors
that will conceal half of the wardrobe space
when opened.
One panel slides almost completely over the other
(if you have two doors), giving you access to half the
closet at any one time. If you have more than two panels
on your sliding door then access will be reduced.
Hinged doors are also easier to add to your
bedroom design, as they aren’t as broad as
sliding doors. Before buying hinged wardrobes,
consider if there is enough room for those doors
to be pulled open into your bedroom space.
If you were to choose a standard wardrobe door then
you would have to pull it into the room space to open

complement your existing décor or whether you want your wardrobe(s)
to be the centrepiece of your room with a standout colour.
If you want your wardrobes to be subtle, choose a neutral colour. You
will still have the option of adding more dramatic colours at a later date
by changing your wallpaper or something as simple as your bed linen.

wood type or wood effect (colour) that is applied. There are
lighter-coloured wood effects such as oak, and the more traditional
darker wood effects, such as mahogany and walnut.
when to choose a wardrobe with
a lighter-coloured wood effect
Lighter coloured wood effects (tones that range from yellow
to light brown) like our range of oak effects are versatile
enough to match most decors. A selection of them comes
with tree ring growth marks that give surfaces of the wooden
furniture a distinctive appearance.
when to choose a wardrobe with
a darker wood effect
Wardrobes with a darker wood effect tend to dominate a
room, creating a more dramatic impact on the bedroom
décor than lighter-coloured wardrobes.

modern or traditional
wardrobe style?
To achieve a bedroom look you are
happy with, it is vital that you pick a
style and finish that complement your
bedroom furniture and décor. There
are two main styles to consider:
contemporary
wardrobes
Wardrobes with clean
simple lines and stylish
touches consisting of
wood-effect, mirror and
glass are perfect for those
that want to create a
contemporary look and
feel that evokes a sense
of urban living.
traditional
wardrobes
Renowned for their
curvaceous style and
simple oak effects or use of
white, traditional wardrobes
can offer a timeless look
that works beautifully in
most bedroom decors.

chest of drawers guide
A convenient storage space for all of your
favourite things
A chest of drawers is an
essential piece of furniture in
any bedroom. They are a
storage solution designed to
suit your clothes, your space
and your bedroom décor.
How your chest(s) of drawers match your bed and
wardrobe(s) is also vitally important. So all in all
they give you lots to think about before making a
purchase, which is why we’re here to help with our
handy chest of drawers buying guide. Simply keep

drawers in no time.
what are chests of drawers?
Also know as a dresser, bureau and bedside table,
a chest of drawers is distinguished by the parallel
layers of drawers that feature within it. The top layer

as a practical storage surface to place items such
as jewellery, alarm clocks, photo frames and books
for bedtime reading.
It is common for chest of drawers to match a
bedroom’s wardrobes. A chest of drawers can be
perceived as the sister product to a wardrobe. They
provide smaller items (like socks) to be put away
without getting lost amongst your larger items of
clothing, while your wardrobes will provide space
to neatly hang clothes that are easily creased.
types of chest of drawers
Finishes
When choosing your chest of drawers, you need to consider height, width, number of drawers and
style. However, they are by and large waist level with a single column of three to five drawers. There is
also material and style to be considered, there are three of the main types.
drawer chest
choosing a chest of drawers
A chest of drawers (also known as a bureau) conventionally contains
three long and two short parallel, horizontal drawers. They were
traditionally made to store clothing, particularly clothes and socks and
they can be a very handsome addition to your bedroom. However, they
can potentially store a wide variety of belongings, including jewellery and
books, and they act as a convenient storage solution.
Everyone’s storage needs are different. Whether you
need deep drawers to store jumpers or multiple small
drawers for a large amount of accessories, there are
plenty to choose from at Bensons for Beds. Here a few
little tips to keep you on track when choosing the right
chest of drawers for your bedroom:

bedrooms with limited space. This style is also useful if you are looking
to store longer garments such as dresses.
drawer bedside cabinet
These are traditionally small chests of drawers that are a practical size
and height to slot nicely next your bed. They serve as a bedside table
that provides you with a space to put your alarm clock, glasses and a
lamp plus their drawers provide a convenient storage unit for other items.
These days they are also useful for storing our every day electrical
devices and their chargers.

the dressing table guide
Add a splash of luxury to your bedroom
décor while reducing clutter
A dressing table is designed
to be your own little sanctuary,
a place to relax while
preparing to look your best.
It’s also an elegant piece of
furniture that stores away your
treasured possessions while
adding character and a touch
of luxury to your bedroom.
Whether you’re looking for a dressing table for

a style statement.
planning for your dressing table
Before choosing a dressing table, first decide where you want to put it in
your bedroom. You can then take measurements of that space and make
sure you have enough room. Remember, you’re not just measuring the
required space for the dressing table, but the walking space around it.
If you want to put your dressing table in an alcove, skirting boards and
radiator pipes will have to be taken into consideration.
dressing table tip
Shallow drawers are

deeper, wider drawers
are better for clothes
and lingerie.

If you are not buying a dressing table as part of a set,
including a chair or stool, then check the distance from
the table to where the chair/stool will be positioned.
$SSUR[LPDWHO\FPVKRXOGEHSOHQW\
Other considerations that need to be made are making sure your
desired dressing table matches the rest of the furniture in your
bedroom. The easiest way to do that is choose a neutral colour
or wood/wood effect, so it complements your bedroom décor.
Alternatively, you can create a look for your bedroom based on
one of our ranges.
Contemporary dressing tables have a simpler style with
minimal detailing. They are usually smaller than classic
dressing tables, making them more practical for smaller
bedrooms. However, you should also bear in mind that
they provide a little less storage too.
bedroom furniture:
When choosing between a chair and stool, remember
that a stool can be tucked away underneath the dressing
table to give you more space. So perhaps a stool is a
better option if you have a small bedroom. However, if
you have a larger bedroom choose a stylish chair that
truly leaves an impression and beautifully complements
your dressing table.

how to add to your
shaker-style inspired
bedroom decor
If you are looking for a simple and
soothing bedroom to sleep in
night after night then you should
up the ante on the Shaker style.
Some of the key features for
making the most of this look are:
‡ Choosing a wooden bed
This style can bring a light and airy feel to your bedroom. It uses
clean, smooth and simple lines that make for an elegant range of
bedroom furniture.
about modern style
Two essentials of good design is a strong emphasis on line and form,
both of which are given the utmost of focus in modern design. When
applied, modern style will give your bedroom energy and a design that
will emphasise light and space. Because there isn’t any clutter, every
piece has to have a high impact on the overall décor of the bedroom.
‡ Keep your colour palette simple.
White and natural wood tones
are a good option.
Modern design in interior design refers to ‘Mid Century Modern’, a style
that was created between the 1920s and 1950s. It is characterised
by its clean, simple lines, use of natural materials such as wood and
minimalist approach to colour.
‡ Keep the room tidy and
uncluttered with clever
storage solutions>@.

about timeless style
Bedroom furniture that features smooth, solid wood is
strong, timeless and holds a natural beauty that
makes it perfect in either modern or traditional homes.
It is a look that is designed to stay looking good for
years to come.
Until the industrial revolution all furniture was made
out of wood. Now materials such as plastic, metal,
leather and glass are also used. However, wooden
furniture still holds an important place in the bedroom
furniture industry. There are now also a larger, more
modern variety of wooden furniture styles. These
strike the perfect balance of having a younger more
modern look, while still paying homage to the
traditional qualities of wooden furniture.

crumpled newspaper and see them shine[22].
how to clean wood
Wooden surfaces are particularly vulnerable from hot items, so any
hot spills need to be wiped up immediately. Coasters and placemats
are an essential purchase to ensure you protect wooden surfaces.
Spillages are also potentially harmful as if it is left on wood it will rot
and deteriorate, so wipe them up right away too[23].
how to clean wood veneer
Wood veneer has a thin sheet of natural wood that covers the surface
of the furniture. It’s an affordable way to get the look of hardwood
while avoiding the cost. To take care of it, clean wood veneer with mild
products and avoid the use of wax or oil-based polishes. You should
also keep wood veneer out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
