BJORN BJORHOLM Bjorn Bjorholm, owner of Bjorvala Bonsai Studio, is a professional bonsai artist with roots in Knoxville, TN. He is a founding member of the Knoxville Bonsai Society, co-creator of the annual Tennessee Bonsai Exhibition and an instructor at the Fujikawa International School of Bonsai. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, Bjorn apprenticed at Fujikawa Kouka-en Nursery in Osaka, Japan where he spent several years working under Master Keiichi Fujikawa. Bjorn’s trees have won awards in the prestigious Taikan-Ten (Grandview Bonsai Exhibition) in Kyoto, Japan. Currently, Bjorn divides his time between teaching bonsai art in the United States, developing a popular YouTube video series “The Bonsai Art of Japan,” and furthering his studies and business in Kyoto. RODNEY CLEMONS Rodney Clemons began his formal training studying with E. Felton Jones, has learned from renown bonsai masters John Naka and Yugi Yoshimura, and is now one of the premier bonsai artists in the southeastern U. S. Known for designing Japanese gardens, in addition to creating award winning Bun-Jin and Windswept bonsai, Rodney excels at developing an entire visual statement; bonsai, rock and water features, and their relationship to each other. A sought-after speaker at U.S. and international bonsai conventions, Rodney brings both humor and a deep love of nature to his teaching. Currently the curator of the collection at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA and the Smith Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw, GA, Rodney also teaches workshops at his Allgood Bonsai nursery in Atlanta, GA, when he’s not on the road instructing, judging or critiquing collections. COLIN LEWIS Colin Lewis lives in coastal New England where he works full-time as a bonsai artist, consultant and principal of Ho Yoku School of Bonsai, north of Kennebunkport, ME. Colin has studied bonsai for over 30 years, is recognized internationally for his creative bonsai designs and has authored seven popular books on bonsai. Well known in the United States, Colin is even more famous in Europe where he has served as the consulting editor for Bonsai Magazine (UK) and on the board of the European Bonsai Association. Additionally, Colin is the Bonsai Consultant to the Lars Anderson Collection at the renowned Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, in Boston, Massachusetts. PEDRO MORALES Born in Chicago, Pedro’s family moved to Puerto Rico when he was a baby. There he grew up working in his family’s nursery, Jardin Selecto. In 1985 Pedro began formal studies with Puerto Rican Bonsai Master Adam Montalvo. Three years later he participated in his first international conference and in 2009 he chaired the 6th World Bonsai Convention. Pedro has traveled to speak, advise and/or demonstrate at bonsai conferences in Korea, China, Germany, Australia, India, Japan, Thailand and more, as well as in more than a dozen Latin American countries. A world class bonsai artist, Pedro has had eight of his trees chosen as among the best in the world by the World Bonsai Friendship Federation. Presently focusing on tropical bonsai, Pedro owns Futago Bonsai nursery in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he instructs students from all over the world in this specialized area of bonsai art. MARC NOELANDERS Marc Noelanders is the President of the Bonsai Association of Belgium, the country where he was born and where he resides when not traveling and teaching. After studying extensively under noted Japanese artists, including Masahiko Kimura. John Naka has recognized Marc for developing a unique and identifiable style, a daring combination of natural artistic ability and technique mastery. Marc is the initiator of The Noelanders Trophy, held every January and widely regarded as one of the best shows in Europe. A popular Rendezvous instructor, Marc is returning this year and we couldn’t be more pleased. JOHN POWELL John Powell is a Japanese style garden builder, pruning specialist and graduate of West Virginia University with a degree in Forestry. After an initial life-changing visit to Japan in 1993, John immersed himself in an intensive study of Japanese garden design, construction and maintenance. Four years later he attended the first Japanese Garden Seminar conducted by the Kyoto University of Art Design. John interned with Suzuki Zoen in Niigata and at the Adachi Museum of Art in Shimane, Prefecture. John was the first westerner to train as a gardener at Adachi, currently Japan’s top ranked garden. In addition to designing, John co-owns Weatherford Gardens Nursery and Landscaping, Weatherford, TX and is a staff writer for The Journal of Japanese Gardening. KATHY SHANER Kathy apprenticed in Toyohashi, Japan where she was granted a five year internship with Sensei Mitsuya, winner of the Minister of Education and Kokufu awards. The first woman and the first westerner ever to be certified by the Nippon Bonsai Kyodo Kumaii, Kathy currently serves as the curator of The Golden State Bonsai Federation Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt, CA. Traveling extensively, Kathy teaches throughout the United States, and designs and maintains private collections around the country.
