Shaun the Sheep: The Movie 2 3 Films Continues From 6 Feb From 13 Feb From 13 Feb Trash (15) Selma (12A) Fifty Shades of Grey Director: Stephen Daldry. Starring: Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen. UK/Brazil 2014. 114 mins. English and Portuguese with English subtitles. Director: Ava DuVernay. Starring: David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson. UK/USA 2014. 128 mins. Shaun the Sheep: The Movie (U) Echoing the feel-good elements of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, this joint Brazilian/British production seamlessly directed by Stephen Daldry (BILLY ELLIOT) centres on three young ragamuffins who stumble across a cash-stuffed wallet on the rubbish tip where they forage to support their families. The boys (played by uniformly charismatic newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein) promptly spend the loot. But then they discover that the wallet holds considerably greater value to a corrupt politician, who naturally wants it back – badly. Helping the youngsters as part of their own quest for political justice are Martin Sheen as an American priest and Rooney Mara as his assistant, a stroke of casting that certainly adds to TRASH’s global appeal, as does a cameo by CNN’s renowned international correspondent Christiane Amanpour. 4 0871 902 5722 Ava DuVernay brings her strength as a documentarian to this powerful Oscarnominated dramatisation of America’s Civil Rights movement. Opening with Martin Luther King (an impressively convincing Oyelowo, THE BUTLER) collecting his Nobel Peace Prize, the film swiftly moves to the bombing of an Alabama church and the dignified attempts of a local resident (co-producer Oprah Winfrey) to register to vote. As its title suggests, SELMA focuses on the city that King chose as pivotal to his efforts to persuade President Johnson (Wilkinson) to grant voting rights for all, a battle that proved bitter and often bloody. Carmen Ejogo as King’s equally determined wife Coretta Scott King, Tim Roth as racist governor George Wallace, and Cuba Gooding Jnr shine amongst an extensive, well-drawn cast of characters. Contains moderate violence, racist language and infrequent strong language. www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk (Cert TBC) Director: Sam Taylor-Johnson. Starring: Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson. USA 2015. TBC mins. “Mr Grey will see you now.” This adaptation of the first novel in E. L. James’s 100 million-selling erotic trilogy must surely be one of the most feverishly anticipated films of the decade. Student Anastasia Steele (Johnson, THE SOCIAL NETWORK) goes to interview billionaire businessman Christian Grey (Dornan, hitherto best known as the lethal Paul Spector in The Fall). He is confident, smart, worldly and successful, but as Ana gradually comes to learn, he is tormented by personal demons. Their developing relationship takes Ana on a journey of exploration and discovery as she comes to understand his desire – and her own. Directed by the artist Sam TaylorJohnson (NOWHERE BOY), and scripted by Kelly Marcel (SAVING MR BANKS), this is a sensitive, stylish evocation of the mysteries of pleasure, with beautifully judged performances from the two leads. facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema Directors: Mark Burton, Richard Starzack. Voices: Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes. UK/France 2015.85 mins. Based on BBC TV’s most popular ever children’s series, SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE MOVIE is the latest stop-motion extravaganza from the multi-award winning Aardman Animations (Wallace & Gromit, CHICKEN RUN), and is co-written and directed by regulars Mark Burton and Richard Starzack. It follows the always mischievous Shaun (Fletcher) on his day off. After getting into a bit of a pickle involving Mossy Bottom’s uptight farmer, a caravan and a very steep hill, Shaun finds himself having to rescue the farmer from the big city, with the help of his flock and the grumpy sheepdog Bitzer (Sparkes). In typical Shaun style, it’s a recipe for misadventure and highly humorous havoc, and the breathless pace and steady stream of visual and verbal gags will delight families of all ages. @Abbeygate_bury 5 Films From 20 Feb From 20 Feb From 26 Feb From 27 Feb Whiplash (15) Foxcatcher (15) Love is Strange (15) Director: Damien Chazelle. Starring: Miles Teller, J. K. Simmons, Melissa Benoist. USA 2014. 106 mins. Director: Bennett Miller. Starring: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo. USA 2014. 134 mins. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (PG) Based on his own 2013 short and featuring some of the same cast, writer-director Damien Chazelle’s second theatrical feature centres on the relationship between Andrew (Teller, DIVERGENT), an aspiring jazz drummer, and Fletcher, his ultra-demanding teacher (J. K. Simmons, giving an Oscar-nominated performance). Driven almost to nervous and physical breakdown by Fletcher’s bullying, Andrew sacrifices everything, including his budding relationship with fellow student Nicole (Benoist), for his chance of greatness, leading to a shattering climax. Teller (who did his own drumming) and Simmons (at last relishing a lead role) are both magnificent, Chazelle’s directorial hand is assured, and the cinematography gives the film a decidedly noirish edge. Its exhilarating musical sequences alone justifying its many awards – which include both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2014 – WHIPLASH is an emotionally powerful, highly individual drama. Having won Bennett Miller (CAPOTE, MONEYBALL) the Best Director award at Cannes in 2014, FOXCATCHER has now earned several Oscar nominations including Best Picture. The film tells the true story of brothers Mark and Dave Schultz (Tatum and Ruffalo), wrestling champions taken under the wing of multimillionaire John du Pont (Carell). Du Pont invites the pair to join his Team Foxcatcher and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and Mark in particular falls under the spell of his wealth, drive and apparent generosity. But the deeply strange du Pont becomes increasingly sadistic and controlling, and the trio’s relationship starts to spiral out of control. The almost unrecognisable Carell gives an astonishing, terrifying performance, and Miller’s superb direction draws careerbest turns from Tatum and Ruffalo. The result is an extraordinarily powerful psychological thriller. 6 0871 902 5722 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk Director: John Madden. Starring: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Richard Gere. UK/USA 2015. 122 mins. In this sequel to 2011’s smash-hit grown-up romcom, the Marigold’s co-manager Sonny (Dev Patel) plans to open a second, rather more luxurious hotel, but his impending marriage to the feisty Sunaina (Tena Desae) and the unexpected arrival of guests Lavinia (Tamsin Greig) and Guy (Gere) – who may or may not be hotel inspectors – prove added strains. Meanwhile, permanent residents and hopeless romantics Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup pursue their own ambitions, both in the original hotel and amid the seething humanity of Jaipur, all under the watchful eye of Muriel (Smith), the keeper of everyone’s secrets. Numerous intriguing subplots build up to the vibrant wedding ceremony and Lavinia and Guy’s startling revelations, making for a splendid entertainment courtesy of a top-notch ensemble cast. facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema Director: Ira Sachs. Starring: John Lithgow, Alfred Molina, Marisa Tomei. USA/France/Brazil/Greece 2014. 94 mins. Long-term New York lovers Ben (Lithgow) and George (Molina) embrace the new legality of gay marriage by getting hitched, only to find George facing the sack from his intolerant employer. Now unable to afford their apartment, they’re obliged to live separately with friends and family, an arrangement that comes with pressures and discomforts that none of those involved could have imagined. Writer-director Ira Sachs (KEEP THE LIGHTS ON) has strong form portraying the subtle nuances of intimate relationships; with LOVE IS STRANGE the middle-aged element adds both poignancy and unmawkish humour. Marisa Tomei as Kate, the put-upon wife of Ben’s nephew (Darren Burrows), and Charlie Tahan as her son are both especially effective, but it’s veteran character actors Lithgow and Molina who rightly steal the show. @Abbeygate_bury 7 Films Half-Term Special From 6 Mar From 13 Mar From Sat 14 to Thu 19 Feb Still Alice (12A) Suite Française (15) Peppa Pig: The Golden Boots (U) Directors: Richard Glatzer, Wash Westmoreland. Starring: Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart. USA 2014. 101 mins. Director: Saul Dibb. Starring: Kristin Scott Thomas, Michelle Williams, Matthias Schoenaerts. UK/France/Canada 2014. 107 mins. Directors: Various. Voices: Morwenna Banks, John Sparkes, Lily Snowden-Fine. UK 2015. 60 mins approx. Alice is a linguistics professor married to the wealthy, loving John (Baldwin) and is secretly diagnosed with genetically driven Alzheimer’s after noticing her memory failing. The deterioration accelerates, and worse still, one of her children tests positive for the same gene. Julianne Moore’s powerful, Oscarnominated performance as Alice holds great resonance as she tries to come to terms with her situation and remain positive, despite her fading personality. We see through her eyes and experience the disorientation she feels as the outside world slips beyond her reach. When the light of recognition dims, her family’s determination to make her as comfortable as possible is heartbreaking and inspiring. Co-directors/writers Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (QUINCEAÑERA) convey the tragedy of Alice’s fate while affirming the strength of the human spirit in this ultimately uplifting story. Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex references. Based on the bestseller by Ukranian émigrée Irène Némirovsky, SUITE FRANÇAISE follows a beautiful young Parisian, Lucile Angellier (Williams, SHUTTER ISLAND), anxiously awaiting news of her prisoner-of-war husband whilst lodging with her domineering mother-in-law (Scott Thomas) in a village in Burgundy. Already overwhelmed by the influx of refugees fleeing Paris, the locals are soon obliged to billet the occupying German troops that follow. Lucile finds herself falling for a handsome and sophisticated young officer (Schoenaerts, RUST AND BONE), leading inevitably to emotional conflict and tragedy. The film explores the theme of women’s experience of World War II, drawn from Némirovsky’s novel and her contemporary viewpoint. In a rare move these days, director Saul Dibb shot on 35mm film, helping to create this tense, richly visual and dramatically gratifying work. 8 0871 902 5722 www.abbeygatecinema.co.uk Everybody's favourite little pig makes a big splash with this big-screen outing. Peppa Pig and her animal friends are well-established children's favourites, not least with Toddler Time audiences at Picturehouse Cinemas. Now for a special treat we have this hour-long feast of snorty family entertainment. The centrepiece is the lovable little porker’s very first 15-minute episode, The Golden Boots. Peppa's favourite hobby is jumping into puddles, so naturally she's looking forward to the big Puddle Jump Competition. But calamity strikes when she can't find her boots. Now the race is on to track them down in an adventure that takes her across land and sea – and even to places you'd never expect! The packed programme also includes five popular Peppasodes. In between the animations there's lots of extra fun too, including singing and dancing from Channel 5's popular Milkshake! presenters Jen, Derek and Kemi. facebook.com/Abbeygatecinema @Abbeygate_bury 9 Community Screenings Abbeygators Silver Screen Great kids’ matinees every Saturday at 11.00. Fancying himself a benign influence, Aydin seems oblivious of the scorn he incurs, until a stone thrown by a local kid prompts a slow, intense journey of selfexamination. This powerful drama from Cannes winner Zvyagintsev (THE RETURN) centres on a roughneck mechanic and his family’s struggle to save their home from a corrupt mayor turned property developer.
