We will miss you, dear friend.
Welcome
... to the Thousand Islands Arts Center’s 2016 season! We
are delighted to offer a new and improved schedule of classes
this year with outstanding instructors, some familiar to you,

chair, Dine-Around (fundraiser) founder and
chair, membership committee chair, and beloved
friend, passed away at her home on Wellesley
Island on March 4.
Linda joined the TIAC Board of Trustees in 2013
and, as she did for so many other worthy organizations she served, hit
the ground running. She
even recruited her husband Marty to conduct a
strategic planning exercise over several months
for the organization
when it was determined
that TIAC needed an updated strategic plan to
apply for certain grants.

Be sure to check out the Arts Center’s calendar on page 33. Aside
from our plentiful class schedule, we have many wonderful
events and exhibitions throughout the year including the
22nd Annual Weaving History Conference in May; and the 52nd
Annual Antiques Show and Sale and the 34th Annual Arts and
Crafts Show and Sale, both perennial favorites held in August.
TIAC also has its third annual Dine-Around fundraiser
available. Details at TIArtsCenter.org. The Along the River’s
Edge exhibition returns in June and is followed by a weaving
exhibition by Nancy Kozikowski in July and a painting and
photography exhibition by Beth and Bill Munro in August.
We will continue to build on our dry stonewall curriculum which
was a big hit last fall and offer another intensive workshop in
early September. And, in keeping with the Museum’s roots,
we’ve discovered a master weaver from Rochester who will
teach beginning and double weave this season. I invite you to
turn the page and start picking your classes!

CAPTURING ATMOSPHERE
IN WATERCOLOR
Introduction to Silk
Painting
Stormy skies, soft misty mornings
and shimmering sunlight on the
water are all effects that you will
learn in this class geared for students with some previous watercolor
experience. Color temperature and
the push-pull of warm and cool colors will be explored as students experiment with watercolor on various
smooth and textured surfaces.
Watercolor, paper, brushes, foam
board, masking tape, and other
watercolor supplies will be provided.
Please bring a bag lunch.
Enjoy painting with the bold vibrant
colors of Dyna-flow dyes in this introduction to painting on silk class.
In the first day of the workshop each
student will have the opportunity
to create a simple design, transfer
it to a 10” silk hoop and apply the
resist medium. On the second day
the students will apply the color to
the hoop. There will be ample time
to experiment with the dyes before
they are applied to the hoop and the
instructor will also cover the properties of the dye, and color mixing. All
materials supplied.

also cover several techniques for applying paint including palette knife,
dry brush, scumbling and wet into
wet blending. Each student will be

OIL PAINTING with wilson bickford
Wilson Bickford
Wilson’s classes employ “wet” and
traditional techniques, which allow
the student to paint their own realistic interpretation in oils. There
will be a strong focus on perspective
(both aerial and linear), which is so
important in 2-dimensional art. As
with all of Wilson’s classes, each
session is presented in a fun, unpressured atmosphere and students
will leave with their own beautiful painting. Beginners are always
welcome and all materials will be
supplied. Please bring a bag lunch.
This class will be offered three different days. Take one class or take
them all! Each class will work on a
different painting. Please indicate

breezes. Learn to paint stripes, plaids,
washes, rag roses, cascading florals,
animal, fish, leaf or foot prints using environment-friendly, colorfast,
washable dyes. Add ribbons, buttons,

resistant pen, then we’ll introduce
watercolor to finish it. Please bring

LINDA SCHERZ ALLEN started basket weaving with reed in the 1980’s shortly after a move
to northern NY. Her interest in weaving quickly became an important part of her life. She
started designing, teaching, harvesting and working with bark, then waxed linen. She finds
it exciting to create intricate patterns and incorporate different materials in her designs.
She is working on her book for weaving miniatures. Linda has had the pleasure of teaching at various locations for art centers, guilds and groups throughout the eastern United
States. Occasionally she partakes in juried craft fairs and exhibitions. Most recently, her
basket "Radiance" was in the NBO All Things Considered VIII Exhibition. Linda likes to
share her basketry experience with other basket makers and those interested in basketry.
These miniature baskets are as adorable to display as they are functional! Students will have three pattern
choices to weave during this class
—Serenity, Stargazer, or Checkerboard. Serenity has a wood base with
reed spokes glued in and ready for

to create a quilt in a variety of sizes ranging from wall hanging to a
full sized bed quilt. The instructor
will provide one hand-printed gyotaku fish for each student to create
an original quilt that will look like
a framed picture when done. Class
work will be on a wall hanging size,
but extensive information will be
given on creatively putting many
prints together to create a large bedsize quilt. The instructor will also
bring her “scrap bag” for student
use to enhance this process. (Additional gyotaku fish will be available
for purchase.)
Students will create a unique hand
woven wall hanging that they can
frame or hang
on a wooden
dowel or
branch. Learn
how to setup
a heavy-duty

THE STONE WALL PROJECT:
A DRY STONE WORKSHOP
John Shaw-Rimmington
Have you ever admired those beautiful stone walls you see in the countryside? Or the grand stone arches that
add so much to an entryway? This
workshop will show you how to design and build this kind of structure
on your own property and once you
learn you’ll just want to keep going.
In a very hands-on way, students will
learn about traditional dry laid construction, the use of proper masonry
tools, and the basics of structural masonry without mortar.
This two-day, hands-on workshop
is a collaborative project with the
Thousand Islands Arts Center (TIAC)
and the Thousand Islands Land Trust
(TILT), both Clayton non-profit organizations. Participants will build
a unique free-standing wall that is
both functional and beautiful, taking away tremendous knowledge
20
and skills. On Friday evening there
will be a slide show presentation
about dry laid structures including
bridges, gates, fire pits, cairns, benches
and arches at 6 pm at the TILT meeting

by side so close for 2 days. Dan Tack was

MAKE A DIDDLEY BOW
Mike Strouse
The diddley bow is a single-stringed
American instrument which influenced the development of the blues
sound. It was traditionally considered a starter or children’s instrument in the Deep South, especially
in the African American community.
Consisting of a wooden board and a
single wire string stretched between
two screws, a glass bottle is usually
used as the bridge, helping to amplify the sound. In this class, students
will learn to make their own diddley
bow, creatively embellishing to make
it a unique art form—besides a fun
musical instrument.

The 2016 and 2017 summer architecture workshops for kids will complement each other. This summer’s class
will be based on the work of Japanese
Architect Shigeru Ban followed by
the 2017 class which will focus on the
German Architect Frei Otto. These two
architects have collaborated on many
projects using Shigeru Ban’s ingenious
use of cast off paper tubes (or cores)
to build both architectural and disaster relief structures, and Frei Otto’s
inspirational tensile and fabric structures. In this class, students will study
the principles behind these structural
systems and will construct models
combining these forms and principles
with their own imaginations.
We’ll begin with an exploration of
basic design principles followed by a
power point presentation, then students will learn the organizing principles of design, architectural drawing
conventions, and structural fastening
techniques. Students will use their
own design imaginations and make
models for playgrounds, garden structures, or whatever they dream up.
Parents, family, and friends will be
invited to a final presentation as the
students present their portfolios.
