Bembridge lifeboat to launch to stand by the trawler until the arrival
of the other French vessel and escort them both into Portsmouth
Harbour.
Selsey RNLI gets early
morning call for help.
The volunteer crew at Selsey RNLI were paged at 2.08am on
Sunday 24 January 2016 by UK Coastguards. The 20 metre
French stern trawler Eridan had reported total machinery
failure in position 8 miles south east of the lifeboat station.
The Eridian had four persons aboard and weighed 113 tons and
had a 3m draught. They had been fishing when the machinery
failure occurred so 230 metres of net were still in the water
streaming out the stern of the vessel. The weather on scene was
wind SW force 5 in moderate to rough seas with spells of rain and
fog patches.
The lifeboat launched at 2.20am and
proceeded to the given position arriving
on scene at 2.58am. The skipper of
the Eridan said they would release
the net, anchor it to the sea bed and
buoy it for recovery at a later date. When
this was completed at 4.10am a tow was
established between the lifeboat and the
trawler and a decision was made to tow
the vessel to Portsmouth due to its size.
Communications were poor during this
incident due to the language barrier and
sometimes messages were relayed via the Cross Gris Nez (French
maritime organisation) The tow commenced at 4.20am and due to
tide, weather and the size of the vessel progress was slow. During
the tow it was established that another French trawler was on its
way to take over the tow into Portsmouth.
Selsey lifeboat was released from the incident at 8.30am and
headed back to station arriving at 9.00am and rehousing straight
away. The Crew today were: Coxswain Martin Rudwick, 2nd
Coxswain Willy Pledger, Mechanic Phil Pitham, Max Gilligan, Colin
Pullenger, Sam Troughton-Smith and Pip Skeet.
Key facts about the RNLI: The RNLI is the charity that saves lives
at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service
around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The
RNLI operates over 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland
and has more than 140 lifeguard units on beaches around
the UK. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and
government and depends on voluntary donations and
legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI
was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards
have saved over 137,000 lives.
Visit the RNLI’s official YouTube channel for more films and
follow our rescue stories on Twitter.
A charity registered in England and Wales (209603) and
Scotland (SC037736). Charity number CHY 2678 in the
Republic of Ireland.
At 8.00am the UK coastguard requested the Eridan anchor in the
position at that time some 6 miles south west of Selsey Bill and the
tow be released by Selsey lifeboat. The coastguard had requested

News
We would like to welcome Alex Montgomery to the Selsey Team.
He has passed his interview to be a Coastguard Rescue Officer,
successfully passed his medical and will be undertaking training
soon.
Well done to Chris Watkins, Jason Parker and Dan Bailey who have
completed their training course for Officer in Charge (O.I.C) and
soon will be able to take that role at an incident.
January was a busier January than normal for the team with a total
of 8 callouts, as well as the weekly voluntary training that we do to
keep all of our skills and knowledge up to date and ready to use, for
whenever the next 999 call comes in to the team.

We found 12 pieces of ordnance on Medmerry Beach; a cordon
was put in place and we closed the beach while photos were sent
to the National Maritime Operations Centre – the heart of the HM
Coastguard National Network. E.O.D. (bomb disposal) was called
and carried out a controlled explosion and the beach was reopened shortly after. Returning to station at 12:50.
05/01/16 16:23
Team paged to reports of a missing 7 year old at West Wittering
who had been missing for 2 hours. Both Selsey Lifeboats,
Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 104, the Police and ourselves were
all tasked to search the area as well as others. The 7 year old was
found shortly after by one of our Coastguard Rescue Officers and
handed over to the Police to take over. All teams were then stood
down and were able to return to stations.
06/01/16 15:22
Team paged with Sussex Police to reports of possible ordnance at
West Wittering Beach that had been smoking.
On arrival the object was located and had stopped smoking and
had burnt out. A photo was sent to E.O.D. (bomb disposal) to
confirm that it wasn’t ordnance and it was safe for us to dispose of.
Returning to station at 16:55
11/01/16 09:33
Team paged with Littlehampton Coastguard and Sussex
Community Search Team to assist Sussex Police in a search for a
missing person at Pagham. Returning to station at 17:10
Unfortunately the missing person was found dead the following day
inland, our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.
20/01/16 13:51
Team paged to reports of a piece of ordnance at Medmerry Beach.
We closed the beach while we carried out a search of the area
and found a few more pieces while we were there. Photos sent to
E.O.D (bomb disposal) who were unable to attend before sunset.
Team stood down once ordnance was covered by the tide.
Returning to station at 16:45
Team re-tasked to meet E.O.D to carry out a controlled explosion.
Returning to station at 13:40
If you find anything suspicious on the beach
DO NOT TOUCH and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
23/01/16 14:26
Team paged to reports of a capsized boat and people in the water
at Itchenor. Team stood down on route to Itchenor with all casualties safely out of the water and all safe and well.
27/01/16 17:06
Two members of the team paged to meet a member of the public

A TOUCH OF SELF-INDULGENCE AND MEMORIES OF SELSEY
While researching Dr. Percy Crompe Barford for last month’s Selsey Life I, inevitably, took a look at his parents and grandparents. As
my birthday falls this month I have allowed myself the luxury of writing about Letitia, Percy’s paternal grandmother and hope you find her
as interesting as I do.
RICHARD CROMPE BARFORD AND LETITIA GALE
Richard was born on 6 February 1809 at Portsea, Hants and baptised on 16 April 1809. His father was also Richard and his mother was
Maria. Letitia was baptised on 14 March 1810, daughter of James and Sarah. James was a farmer with some 200 acres of land so we
can imagine that Letitia’s life was a fairly comfortable one.
Richard Barford married Letitia Gale on 9th February 1830 at Hurst, Berks when he was 21 years old and she was only 19 and required
her father’s permission to marry. They married by licence and James Gale is shown as her ‘natural and lawful father’. They had three
sons and a daughter: Richard Gale Barford, baptised 20 March 1831, James Gale Barford baptised 1833, Giles Crompe Barford
baptised 26 July 1835 and Elizabeth, born ca 1837.
But all did not go smoothly for The Hampshire Advertiser of 24 January 1835, London Gazette of 27 January 1835 and Perry’s Bankrupt
Gazette of 7 February 1835 all carried a notice from The Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors concerning Richard.
‘The hearing to take place at the Court House at Reading on the 17th February 1835 at 10 o’clock in the morning precisely. Richard
Crump Barford, late of Hurst, near Wokingham, Berks, Cattle Dealer, before Soberton, Nr Droxford and Bishop’s Waltham, Southampton,
Butcher and Cattle Dealer.’
By 1841 Letitia was 30 years old and living in Wokingham along with Mary Reynolds and Mary Lloyd. The census returns are too faint
to read and, in any case, the 1841 census is not very informative. However, we know that Giles Crompe Barford was living with his
grandparents and was 5 years old and Elizabeth, aged 4, was living with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and William Lane, a farmer at
Wood Cray, Wokingham.
In 1851, however, we find Letitia living at Market Place, Wokingham, with her sons Richard, James and Giles. Her daughter Elizabeth
was still living with William and Elizabeth but this time it was in Remenham, Oxfordshire and William was the Innkeeper of The
Horseshoes. Elizabeth is described here as a Butcher’s Daughter.
Letitia was conducting the business of a shoemaker while Richard and Giles were both apprenticed to a shoemaker. Whether or not
it was Letitia is hard to say but it is likely that Giles was her apprentice as he had health problems later in life. James Gale Barford,
however, was apprenticed to a surgeon who was probably Edward Weight who had been a GP and surgeon in Wokingham since at least
1830.
But worse was to come. The London Daily News of 9 October 1856 recorded that ‘Richard Crump Barford, 47, was charged with
uttering some forged £5 Bank of England notes, with intent to defraud the Governor and Company of the Bank of England’. The lengthy
report also stated that ‘on four separate occasions, having purchased a small quantity of ham and beef, he uttered in payment a forged
£5 note, and received the change, and each time he wrote his true name and address upon the note’.
This report ended with the comment that ‘The notes produced seemed, upon comparison with genuine Bank of England notes, as if they
had been struck off from the authentic plate’.
The same trial, with embellishments, was reported in the Morning Post of 30 October 1856 in which Richard was described as ‘a person
cased in a smock frock’ and seemed to indicate that Richard conducted his own defence as it stated ‘The prisoner cross-examined the
witnesses with a good deal of ingenuity and apparent artlessness, and some amusement was created by the tone in which he asked
Rolls, the police-constable, whether he did not appear very alarmed and excited when he was told that the notes were forged. He also
inquired of the constable whether he thought it stood to reason that he should put his real name and address to a note if he knew it to be
forged?’
Richard Barford, aged 47, a labourer, was tried and convicted on 27 October 1856 and was committed to prison for 6 years. Court
documents stated that he was married with five children (though Letitia later states there were only 4). Initially, he was sent to Millbank
Prison but on 17 November 1857 he was removed from there and sent to Chatham. His prison record allows us to know what Richard
looked like. He was 5 ft 6 inches tall, stoutish, with a sallow complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes and a broken nose.

We also learn that his ability to read and write was ‘Imperfect’.
Once Richard was safely inside, Letitia set about ridding herself of him and on the sixteenth day of February 1859, she swore an affidavit
and paid 1/- (1 shilling) for the privilege.
‘To the Judge Ordinary of the Court for Divorce and Matrimonial Causes
The Application of Letitia Barford of Wokingham in the County of Berks the lawful wife of Richard Crompe Barford
Sheweth That on the ninth day of February one thousand eight hundred and thirty she was lawfully married to Richard Crompe Barford

soon afterwards compelled to enter into servitude to procure subsistence.
That she continued in servitude for a period of fourteen years and upwards during which time (with the occasional pecuniary assistance
from Relatives and Friends she wholly supported herself and maintained, educated and brought up her said four Children
That in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty nine by the assistance of her Father, James Gale (now deceased) and other
Friends, she succeeded in establishing herself in the business of a Boot and Shoe Maker in the Town of Wokingham in the County of

That her said Father the said James Gale formerly of Hurst aforesaid was a Farmer, and died in the month of August one thousand
eight hundred and fifty five leaving her Mother, Sarah Gale, his Widow, him surviving and that her said Mother also died on the first day
of August one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight and upon her death the Applicant became entitled to a share of her late Father’s
property consisting of money.
That no Settlement was made before or after her marriage with the said Richard Crompe Barford of any property to which at the time of
such marriage she was possessed or entitled to or might thereafter become possessed or entitled to.
That about the end of the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty six or the early part of the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty
seven, her said Husband the said Richard Crompe Barford was convicted of Felony for which offence he is now undergoing a sentence
of penal servitude.
That since the desertion of her said Husband the Applicant hath (with the occasional assistance of her Friends as before mentioned) has
maintained herself by her own industry and hath thereby and otherwise acquired certain property consisting of money.
Wherefore she prays an Order for the protection of her Earnings and property acquired since the said year one thousand eight hundred
and thirty six from the said Richard Crompe Barford and from all Creditors and persons claiming under him.’

past times
On 9 July 1859, however, happier times came for Letitia as the Reading Mercury reported a marriage:
‘On 4th inst. At Wokingham, by the Rev. A A Cameron, Mr William. Darnell of Hartley Row, to Elizabeth, only daughter of Mrs Letitia
Barford of Wokingham.
William Darnell was a butcher in Hartley Wintney and he and Elizabeth had two daughters – Kate born in June 1860 and Emily born
June 1861. William must have been successful as they had a servant named Ellen Fletcher but their happiness was short-lived because
Emily died on 11 August 1861 and Elizabeth died in on 15 October 1861 at the age of 23. William later remarried and had more children.
Another small digression here taken from the website www.wokingham-tc-gov.uk, Wokingham Virtual Museum. In 1844, the Rose Inn
at Wokingham moved and there was a sale of old furniture and effects belonging to it. Letitia was at the sale and bought an oil painting
of an unknown young girl who reminded her of Elizabeth. From Letitia it was passed to Dr. James Gale Barford who sent it to a dealer
in London for cleaning and restoration where it was found to have been painted over a picture of Prince George of Denmark, Baron
Wokingham KG. Dr. Barford was of the opinion that it may once have been one of the Corporation pictures. Upon his death, the Rev. C
W Penny purchased the picture from Dr. Barford’s widow and presented it to the Corporation in 1898 where it hangs to this day.
I find this interesting as Letitia had been very successful in her endeavours and had some money to spare for small luxuries.
In 1861 Letitia was still in Market Place, Wokingham, aged 50, making shoes but the children had flown the coop. Richard Gale, a
clicker, to his own home with wife Kate and their children, James Gale to Shute End where he was married and practising as a Surgeon,
GP and a Professor of Chemistry, and Giles Crompe to the household of Thomas Jones, a Surgeon and Accoucheur in Limehouse,
London as a Servant.
(Perhaps it would be as well to state that a boot and shoe clicker is the person who cuts the uppers for boots or shoes from the skin of
leather).
By 1871 Letitia, although still in the same place and following the same trade had obviously done well as she had a servant named Mary
Hawkins although she had added another string to her bow.
The Reading Mercury reported, on Saturday 16 September 1871, that:
‘After holding the office for nearly thirty years, Mr Spencer has resigned the Postmastership, and the appointment has been given to Mrs.
Barford, of the Market Place. We trust that increased accommodation will be afforded the public in the new office, as it has long been
a matter of complaint that the old office was much too small for the increasing business of the Post Office and the telegraphic services
combined.’
In 1873 Letitia married Edward Weight at St. Jude’s, St Pancras. Edward was a widower as Frances Anna Weight, his wife, had died
aged 78 in 1872. Edward started out as a GP at Shute End, Wokingham and in 1817 and 1820 was listed as Surgeon at Wellington
College, with James Gale Barford.
The only clue we have to Richard Crompe Barford’s fate is that by the time his son, James, married in 1875 he is described as deceased
but as he is also described as a ‘Gentleman’ this statement may not be true.
Letitia died on 5 March 1877, leaving effects under £600 with her son, James Gale Barford, as one of the executors. Edward died on 20
October 1879 leaving under £3,000.
I am so impressed by this woman. No child benefit, no social housing, no NHS, no maintenance from Richard - in short - no benefits
other than those she accrued from her own hard work with the occasional help of friends and relations. She, metaphorically speaking,
rolled up her sleeves and got on with it. What a role model!
SHIRLEY DALLIMORE REMEMBERS…
I was so pleased to hear from Shirley who, inspired by John Ayling, has sent her memories of Selsey which I have her permission to
pass on to you.
‘I have just been reading the articles in The Selsey Life re the Forty Fields and Mr and Mrs Beatty.
Although I left Selsey 15 years ago, after being born there, and living there for 63 years, I still love to hear and read about the people and
things I remember from childhood. Luckily I have a friend who passes on to me your magazine each month.
I remember as a child we spent many happy hours playing in the Forty Fields, although it was during the War. One thing we thought was
really fun was watching the planes dropping the ‘Window’ or ‘Chaff’ to confuse the enemies radar. It was made of strips of tin foil or material similar and we used to love to watch it fall, and collect it up. Our access to the fields was a cut through from Beach Road, just past
the Listening Post. They stretched from there across to Arnell Avenue and Fish Lane, and to the rear of the houses in Manor Road.
During the War we used to gather Vetch from the fields to be sent off to make medicines.
The Army were also stationed in the fields at one time, and Soldiers, befriended by our parents, used to take us to the ENSA Concerts
in the large marquee. When an air raid was imminent, a soldier would rush onto the stage, blow a whistle and we would have to make a
dash for home. There were good memories as well as bad.
Regarding the Beattys, when I left school I went to work for Mr James Fletcher at The Central Stores in East Street. Mrs Beatty had her
weekly grocery order from the store and I was usually the one to deliver it to one of the tall houses just into Manor Road. They lived opposite to my Aunt and Uncle, Mr and Mrs Mervyn Marsh. I can recall, often seeing them cycling around the Village.’
Thank you, Shirley. I look forward to more reminiscences from you, and indeed, from anyone else who cares to join in.
FORTIES FIELD FROM MAY COLE
I have been taken to task by May regarding Forties Field. She told me Forties Field was at the end of Forties Lane which led to a 40
acre field and that it was not behind the council houses. The nearest modern approximation is that it is at the end of Arnell Avenue, off
East Street, just before the start of Fisherman’s Walk. Also Albion Road starts at Cotland Road,
Behind the Fisherman’s Joy, running parallel with Manor Road was Prior’s Field (also known as Accommodation Meadow according to
an auctioneer’s prospectus I have). This is where the bombardment of Selsey took place in 1907. Adjoining it, to the right, was Arnell’s
Field. The land mine dropped behind the Beach Road houses.
May also tells me she knew Frank Beaty who was older than she. She also knew his Dad and Mum well during the war. Frank’s father
was a civilian at Tangmere and valeted for Douglas Bader when he flew there.
Thank you, May, for your help which is most welcome

SEAL ISLAND WI
Our President Melanie Garrett welcomed members and wished
everyone a Happy New Year. We had done quite well at the
Christmas Tree Festival at the Methodist Hall and people seemed
to be impressed that we had made all the baubles. A successful
Christmas dinner had been held on 10th December at Selsey
Golf Club and Melanie thanked Gwen for arranging it. Sue then
passed round the Refreshments and Flower lists for the coming
year. Mention was also made of the Temari Balls and Goldwork
Workshops on 30th March. Sue and Pauline Bridger will be
attending the Sidlesham WI birthday party on 10th February.
Melanie and Sue will also attend the East Manhood Group
Meeting on 14th January. The lunch club will meet on Tuesday
16th February at a venue to be announced at our next meeting.
Melanie also thanked Sue for arranging the programme for 2016.
Voting also took place to find which Resolutions will go forward to
the Annual Meeting in Brighton in June. Members were reminded
that subs are due this month. The cost is £37.50 and Francesca
explained that £18 comes to us £8.40 to West Sussex Federation
and £11.10 to National.
Our speaker was Anya Frampton from Mulberry Divers who gave
us a fascinating talk accompanied by some brilliant photos of
Selsey beneath the waves. Mulberry Divers is a family business
that settled in Selsey due to its unique mix of diving opportunities.
Selsey Bill is part of a busy shipping lane extending eight miles
into the sea. There are 700 wrecks including some of the WWII
Mulbery Harbours in the vincinity where marine life is thriving. Apart
from the crabs and lobsters and prawns that Selsey is known for,
baby flat fish, John Dory, Mackerel and Red Mullet can be found in
the deeper water. Photos of sponges, and anemones showed that
there is a lot of colour even in these waters although some species
hide themselves very well. Underneath the Lifeboat Station
pipefish and seahorses can be seen and starfish are making a
comeback. Even snorkelling nearer to shore can give a glimpse of
a world many of us didn’t know existed close to home.
All ladies are welcome to our meetings at The Selsey Centre on the
first Thursday of the month. Meetings start at 7.30pm. For further
information telephone 01243 604059.
SELSEY WI
Our President Pauline Bridger welcomed the ladies
to the meeting. After formal business, we were
entertained by our speaker Ben Cross talking about
British Alstroemeria and The UK Cut Flower Industry. Ben’s family
have been running Crosslands Flower Nursery near Arundel since it
was established in 1957. With the aid of slides, he took us through
the stages of planting, growing, and to the eventual flowering plants.
What surprised us all was that 97% of flowers are imported into this
country, which Ben is trying to make the public aware of through his
talks to the many clubs and societies that he visits.
Carrying on with our flower theme for the afternoon, Ben Cross
kindly judged our Flower of the Month Competition.
We then proceeded to have an anagram quiz
“Name that flower”
Ladies our next meeting will on
Wednesday the 9th March at 2.15pm in
Selsey Town Hall. Our speaker will be:
James Weston “Birds of West Sussex”
Ladies why not come and join us and become a member of the
Selsey WI. As well as our meetings each month there will be
social events and outings happening in 2016.

of the former “Broadreeds” Holiday Camp; and several roads are

named after former Selsey Lifeboat Cox’ns. Then there’s Lifeboat

landmarks. There is, however, one anomaly- and that’s Domehouse
Close.
I sincerely hope not, and I’m sure Barrett’s will reassure us on
that score! We’ve already seen the problems that a lack of public
transport can create for an estate with “affordable” or “social”
housing in the mix- witness the Sparshott Road area on the
“Broadreeds” development at the southern end of Grafton Road.
What with no shops, schools, or a health centre nearby, and a very
long walk to the nearest bus stop, it’s no fun going anywhere if you
haven’t got a car- especially in the depths of a wet & windy Selsey
winter!
Anyway, I digress (yes, I do make it up as I go along, since you
ask); let’s get back to road names. I’m told that the developers
think them up; they ask the District Council to approve them; CDC
consults the Town Council about them; then there’s a lot of “to-ing
& fro-ing” between all parties until agreement is reached. I’m also
told that developers are encouraged to use names with a local
I understand that the name was originally proposed as “DoneHouse” Close, after some prominent features on a 16th Century
map of Selsey Bill. These were shown as the ruins of a group of
large, circular buildings on the sea-bed but exposed at low water,
near what is now the Oval Field. Marked on the map as “Donehouses”, historians and scholars have puzzled over the name,
with the most popular solution being that they were some form of
defensive works or fortress against invaders. The fact that there
seems to be no other reference to a ”Done-house” or “Donehouses” anywhere else in the country seems to knock that theory
on the head, though!
How the name got changed to “Dome House” Close, I don’t know.
I can only assume that someone at CDC assumed that “DoneHouse” was a spelling mistake, and corrected it! Perhaps one
of you knows better- please let me know if you do. A few years
ago, however, an old friend came up with a theory that seems to
make more sense. He believes that it was a mistake- made by the
original 16th Century cartographer!
Maps of that period were hand-drawn from notes and sketches
made by travelling surveyors. These were taken to London or other
important centres for cartographers to transpose onto vellum or
good quality paper. How easy it would be for the cartographer to
misread a handwritten letter ”V” for a handwritten “N”- and if you
can accept that, it would make sense- the word was “Dove-house”,
not “Done-house”!

Doves were a staple part of the diet in medieval times; Manors
such as Selsey would have had several. They were large, circular
buildings (about the height of a windmill but much wider) designed
to accommodate hundreds of birds, with poles or ladders that
revolved round the inner walls so that the birds could easily be
harvested. They were introduced by the Normans in the 11th
century, and there are hundreds still in existence (and use!) in
northern France to this day.
Whatever they were, coastal erosion probably caused the buildings
to fall into disuse and disrepair. Thankfully, the groynes and other
coast defences are preventing further erosion at present- and
long may they continue to do so! My original question remains
unanswered, though; what street names can we expect on our
new housing estates? Here’s a challenge for you, Messrs Barrett
and Landlink- why don’t you ask the people of Selsey what names
they’d like to see? You could do it through this magazine (I’m sure
the Editor won’t mind!), and perhaps offer a small prize for each
name chosen.

9 top tips for enjoying the
outdoors this spring
Find your local camera club
4. Love your garden
Spring is the perfect time to plant early potatoes, onions, shallots
and summer-flowering bulbs. You’ll also reap the benefits later if
you cut back shrubs, take the weeds in hand and mow the lawn.
If you don’t have a garden or allotment to get stuck into, find a
community gardening organisation near you and meet like-minded
people.
Find more information on the Royal Horticultural Society’s website
The clocks going forward will rob us of an hour in bed, but
on the bright side, we’ll have more daylight hours. Livy
Watson tells you how to use them wisely to maintain your heart
health.
1. Enjoy the great outdoors
Make the most of your local park. Many now
offer free outdoor gyms, with low-impact
equipment such as exercise bikes,
cross trainers and stretch stations.
5. Get on your bike
Aerobic activity such as cycling is good for your heart, and you’ll
also save on transport costs. More than a third of the British population cycle, but if you don’t already have a bike, you can buy a
cheap one second-hand or get a tax-free one through the Cycle to
Work scheme.
Many parks also have tennis courts that
you can reserve for a small fee. Or, to
keep it simple, why not enjoy a healthy picnic
supper followed by a relaxed game of bat and ball, Frisbee, boules
or short cricket?
Find out if there's an outdoor gym near you
You can find local routes at cyclemaps.org.uk and cycle-route.com.
For navigating on the go, why not download the Complete National
Cycle Network app for Android and iPhone? This is available from
apple.com/uk/itunes or play.google.com free of charge.
2. Put a spring in your step
Meet friends for an evening walk, or join a walking group to meet
new people. The walking charity Ramblers has more than 500
rambling groups in England, Scotland and Wales. The association
also runs a Get Walking Keep Walking programme for people who
want to become more active. You can also find walking routes at
walkit.com.
Remember to stay safe by wearing reflective accessories such as
an armband and make sure you have lights.
Search for your local Ramblers group or walk
3. Picture the moment
Photographers call the last hour before dusk the golden hour
because of the soft, photo-friendly light. To work out when this falls,
use the calculator at golden-hour.com and then march out with your
camera in search of beautiful views and wildlife. There are many
free or inexpensive photography walking events across the UK.
live

with
Slimming World
6. Explore your natural habitat
Many animals and birds are more visible (or audible) in the spring.
Owl watching, for instance, is easier in the lighter evenings. For
more purposeful nature spotting, join or set up a BioBlitz. In these
nationwide events, members of the community work with scientists
to identify and monitor as many species as possible.
7. Discover romantic locations
There are various websites dedicated to matchmaking those who
enjoy spending time outdoors. Visit outdoorduo.co.uk or outdoordating.co.uk to meet others who share your love of all things al
fresco.
8. Have a housework workout
A good spring clean increases the heart rate and burns calories.
For example, an hour of heavy cleaning, such as vacuuming, burns
approximately 250 calories.
9. Join a Green Gym
Established by The Conservation Volunteers, Green Gyms get
you active while you help the environment. Led by a qualified
person, groups meet at least once a week to do between one and
four hours of practical – and sociable – conservation or gardening
work. There are about 100 Green Gyms around the UK, and they
welcome people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities. Sessions
include a safety talk and warm-up and cool-down periods.

St Wilfrids Hospice: The Team Beyond the Building
St Wilfrids Hospice in Chichester opened its doors in 1987 and
since then has cared for over 14,000 patients and their families.
The work of the Hospice stretches way beyond its Donnington
premises, and this outreach care is aptly demonstrated by the
role of the Clinical Nursing Staff (CNS) who provide palliative care
support, advice, care co-ordination and much more throughout the
community.
There are 10 CNS nurses in total, and their main role is to provide
support to patients and their families, advise on symptom control,
and provide direction to other related services, including for
example, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, chaplaincy and
carers. Their advisory support work also
extends to families, friends
and neighbours.
Each nurse is assigned to
a GP Practice and works
closely with the Practice team.
The CNS nurses have a key
role in assessing new patients,
not only their immediate health
issues but also housing, family
and financial considerations, including any benefits that might be
available.
The Team also works closely with NHS Community Nurses and if a
patient is admitted to hospital, they will co-ordinate with the nurses
at St. Richards Hospital. Visits are arranged to patients in care and
nursing homes, and they also run courses on palliative care for
staff in care homes and those working in the community.

The 150th Anniversary of the Rededication of St Peter’s Church, Selsey
Wilfrid’s cathedral, and these have been incorporated into the war memorial cross, built in 1921, which stands outside St Peter’s Church
today.
Precious artefacts such as these mark Church Norton out as a site of invaluable historical and spiritual significance and we are grateful
for the work of all those volunteers who maintain this site on our behalf today.
It is entirely possible that materials from the ruins of Wilfrid’s cathedral were used when the church at Church Norton was rebuilt under
Bishop William Rede in the 14th century. In 1804 a writer described this church as ‘a stately Gothic structure situated in the north-east
end of the parish, at a considerable distance from what is called the Street.’
It was for this very reason of ‘distance’ that the decision was made in 1864 to move the church from Church Norton to its present position
at the top of the High Street. The cost was set at £3600 at a Parish Vestry Meeting comprising of the Rector and eight others - £600 to
be raised, with the remainder donated by the Hon. Mrs Vernon-Harcourt, Lady of the Manor. The Bishop of Chichester duly gave his
consent: ‘Remove the Church to the village; it will then be at the doors of the body of the people.’
As can be seen from the photograph above, taken in 1865, the craftsmen involved kept the original shape and structure of the building
but added a spire. The aim at the outset was that ‘the site of the building will be changed, not the building itself.’
Curiously, when the new church was re-consecrated the authorities forgot to transfer the deeds from the old to the new! It was not until
1904 that the mistake was finally rectified. However, the oversight brought into question the validity of the 196 marriages carried out in
the interim. A Bill was introduced into Parliament in 1904 and was eventually passed the following year. Thankfully all marriages carried
out between April 1866 and February 1904 were duly validated!
The Old St Peter’s Church in 1865
Tuesday 12 April 2016 marks a very special anniversary for the people of Selsey. 150 years ago St Peter’s Church was rededicated on
its present site after being moved, stone by stone, beam by beam, on horse-drawn carts, from its original site at Church Norton.
The site at Church Norton, marked by the continuing existence of St Wilfrid’s Chapel and the graveyard, has long been associated with
the Christian Church. Records show that St Wilfrid was given land by King Ceadwalla in AD683 on which to build a monastery.
Wilfrid also built a church or cathedral which he dedicated to St Peter. Nothing remains of this building, as the famous “Sonnet on Selsey
Cathedral” says: ‘The sea now rolls in triumph o’er the ground / where once thy sacred edifice was rear’d; / no mark, no stone, to trace
thy wall is found; / all, all is gone, as if thou ne’er appeared.’
Yet, there are two beautiful early wall sculptures in Caen Stone, which can be seen in Chichester Cathedral, and they are believed
by some to have come from Selsey in 1075. Also there are fragments of Saxon artwork, again believed to have come from the site of
The removal and transportation of the materials would have involved a significant number of the people of Selsey. When the new church
was finally dedicated and opened on 12 April 1866 it would have been a great occasion for everyone and we hope that many people will
join in our 150th celebrations.
There will a Celebration Concert on Saturday 9 April at 7pm which will have a Victorian theme.
There will be a Celebration Lunch on Sunday 10 April at 12 noon in the Hall. And finally
there will be a Service of Dedication on Tuesday 12 April at 7pm in St Peter’s Church.
Please contact Sally (604104) for more information about tickets etc.
I hope that we will see a good many people at these special events. I also hope that
through these celebrations many people will come to rediscover what an important
treasure St Peter’s Church is in this place. It is there for everyone, it is your Parish
Church.

Take Heed – The Ides of March
For all ages
from 16 – 106!
Bleak snows of winter may strike yet their challenges to bring
blown here from some Arctic place with little forewarning
borne on searing icy winds that cut like sharpened knives
to leave soft buds of early springtime clinging for their lives
Complacent seem the murmurings on bridle path and street
their glee bates winter’s reticence quite careless such conceit
when air breathes life through leafless trees, where gently sways
the larch
embrace a Roman caveat, fear then the Ides of March
At rest beneath a star filled night oblivious they sleep
and vivid are their fitful dreams where silent snow falls deep
suddenly the looming weeks are viewed with trepidation
to them it seems an age must pass till April’s liberation

Such winds may seek a different track then veer away instead
across another latitude to rear their ugly head
but someone somewhere certainly is bound to feel the force

FAME THE MUSICAL – AUDITION CALL
Following their amazing success of “Grease” last year, Cloud Nine
Musical Theatre Group are delighted to announce that we have
secured full rights to the brilliant musical “FAME” to be performed
as part of the Selsey Festival on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th
August at The Academy Selsey.
Set in New York City’s celebrated High School for the Performing
Arts on 46th Street, FAME is a humorous, bittersweet but ultimately
inspiring story of a diverse group of students as they commit to four
years of hard artistic endeavour and academic work. The show
explores the issues that confront many young people today, told
mainly through song and dance.
We will be holding auditions during the evening of Friday 22nd April
at Selsey Town Hall. As well as lead roles, there is a highly dynamic
“ensemble of students” who are fully involved in the majority of
songs and dance routines.

our monthly guide to gardening - written by Giles Peare award winning broadcaster
March is one of the most exciting months of the year when the short
dark days of Winter now start to give way to the lengthening daylight
hours which give notice of the arrival of Spring. Heady days indeed.
Nature now comes into its own with a vengeance and how wonderful
it is. Sap is flowing and the fat buds on trees and shrubs are rapidly
swelling prior to opening. They give out a wonderful scent which is
especially noticeable on mild days and evenings.
March Hares are now doing their Spring dance as are the lambs.
Poplar catkins are profuse and attract the first Butterflies and Bees.
Male birds can be quite ferocious as they defend their mates and
nests. Drakes can be seen chasing the females on the rivers and
ponds.

Wild Daffodils now adorn our woodlands, Hedgerows and roadsides.
Primroses, Violets and Crocus’s are now in full bloom and how
beautiful and welcoming they are.
It is a great joy to get out into the beautiful countryside at dawn and
dusk and hear the birds singing lustily with their many varied
melodies. Nothing nicer for a fond mother than a fresh bunch of
wildflowers
on Mothers Day (March 6th).
Yellow-gold is the colour of
the month. Daffodil, Coltsfoot,
Aconite, Marsh Marigold,
Buttercup, Dandelions and Gorse
all abound.
March is here, be

Cut Buddleia back hard this month. This is necessary to keep it down
to a manageable size in small gardens and will also produce new
shoots that carry flowers on their tips. Cut growth down by about 2/3
rds
and a fine flowering season will be assured.
Provide a home for wildlife in your garden by placing piles of logs at
the back of borders or in wild areas. This will encourage Beetles,
Toads, Frogs, Hedghogs and other creatues into the garden. Try to
place water containers nearby.

Preventing and disrupting Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) in Sussex is a high priority for Sussex Police and partners. That is why a Pan
Sussex CSE Campaign has been launched.
Over the next three months(from January 2016), the campaign is taking a three phased approach. In the first phase of the campaign, the
aim is to increase awareness amongst the general public about CSE, as well as specifically targeting parents and carers with what they
need to know about CSE. ‘Child Sexual Exploitation is happening in Sussex’ #StopCSE.
Many people have heard about CSE happening in other parts of the country but find it hard to believe it’s happening in their own area.
The truth is that CSE is happening in Sussex and we all need to know about it. Being aware of it is the first step towards putting a stop to
it.
It’s never the child’s fault
CSE is a crime that can affect any child, anytime, anywhere, regardless of their social or ethnic background. CSE can be carried out by
individuals, by street gangs or by groups. It can be motivated by money or by sexual gratification. But in all cases, there is an imbalance
of power - vulnerable children are controlled and abused by adults or by other children.
The grooming process
Perpetrators gain control over children by grooming them, offering excitement, drugs, alcohol, gifts and affection. At first, this control may
take the guise of ‘romance’ or ‘friendship’.
But once a child does something - even something really small - that they know they might get ‘in trouble’ for, they become vulnerable
to blackmail. As the exploitation gets worse, terrifying threats and violence may be used to keep children compliant. They are sexually
exploited not just by the original perpetrators but often by many other abusers.
It’s a trap
Exploited children are trapped because they often believe the abuse is their own fault - they fear they will be blamed or punished if they
tell anyone what is happening. They are ashamed of what they are forced to do and are scared they will not be believed. In many cases,
children believe they are in a loving relationship with their exploiter. What’s more the perpetrator will do everything they can to isolate
children further by convincing them that their families do not really understand or love them.
Look out for the warning signs

In a village in West Sussex, the residents really do care about what is happening to their birds. At the back end of last year,
Henfield Birdwatch published their fourth book, something that occurs every five years and the third book, which came out
in 2010, won a national award from the British Trust for Ornithology for being the best community conservation project in the
UK.
Established in in 1998 Henfield Birdwatch set out a number of aims. Principle among these was to organise a year-long
survey every five years across the parish and in doing so encouraging residents to contribute, particularly in the garden
surveys. Across all the surveys we have averaged between 5 to 7% of the population taking part, a very high number for a
parish that size. It has always been emphasised that you don’t have to be an ‘expert’ to take part, all records are important,
particularly so when it comes to the more common species because it is these that are going to give you a more accurate
picture of the state of the local environment. That is one of the key measures identified by the Government way back in
the late 1990s, surveying wildlife populations and birds in particular to monitor what is happening in the local environment.
Over the four surveys since 1999 over 175,000 records have been entered onto a database and all this information can
provide data that can be used in assessing the environmental impact in planning applications.
A pleasing aspect of the surveys is that the data produced is very much in line with what is happening across the UK with
bird numbers and underlines the fact that these results provide a proper scientific basis upon which the data can be used in
the planning process and is also useful to underpin conservation programmes.
So, what has happened to Henfield’s birds since 1999? Sadly, as is happening all over the UK, the majority of species
are declining. Once common and familiar species, such as marsh tit and lesser spotted woodpecker, have virtually
disappeared. Most of our summer migrants are down considerably, willow warbler, garden warbler and spotted flycatcher
have all ceased to breed in the parish within the last 15 years. Nightingale and turtle dove numbers though have remained
stable where they are crashing elsewhere.
There is good news however. We have gained little egret, little grebe and buzzards as breeding species. Those bright
colourful goldfinches and the splendid bullfinch are both on the increase. In every survey it is hoped that something special
will turn up and in 2014 that accolade went to a grey phalarope that turned up in November and stayed for a couple of days.
Henfield can be justly proud of this wildlife project. It is long-term and plans are already going ahead for the next survey in
2019. It is contributing a tremendous amount to our bird knowledge at a local, county and national scale as well as a giving
an intimate picture of a Sussex parish and its wildlife.

Signs of Change at
Pagham Harbour & Medmerry
Moving from February into March, winter begins to loosen its grip
and we start looking forward to springs enthusiastic burst of new
life. Our winter visitors are leaving. Skeins of geese and
ducks head north to their summer breeding grounds
including our own pintail and wigeon ducks and
brent geese. I’ll miss their constant dialogue
of honks, quacks and whistles that are so
reminiscent of the season.
However, it will not be long before the first of
our early summer visitors touch down on our
shores in March. The first of these, wheatears,
can be found along our shingle beaches and in
open farmland. The males are smart little birds
with a grey crown and back, black wings and an
orange flush to its breast. Sporting a black
patch through its eye and a white stripe
above the eye, it flashes its white rump as it
flies ahead.
The smallest of our swallows and martins,
the sand martin, is close behind and like the
wheatear has spent the winter in Africa. Their
upperparts are a uniform brown and underparts white,
with a distinct brown band across the chest. They zoom through
the skies, fast and agile on pointed wings, catching insects over
open fields and water. Spring is not far away.
You can join our Warden on a walk around Medmerry on Sunday
06 March and see if you find the first wheatears and sand martins
to arrive on our reserves, while saying goodbye to our winter
wildfowl.
and join the Friends of Pagham Harbour on Sunday 13 March for
their Spring Beach Clean. You are very welcome to join us and I’m
hoping to spot a couple of those early migrants myself whilst doing
my bit.
Our Spring Events leaflet is now available. Following on from the
success of last autumns Astronomy Night and Januarys Wildlife
Photography Workshop, both are back by popular demand.
Springs Astronomy Night will focus on the planets and with
our reserve bursting into life to provide the inspiration,
the Wildlife Photography Workshop will concentrate on
macro photography. New for spring 2016, we also have
a Water Vole Workshop and a Wildlife Artists Workshop.
We will of course still have all your favourite activities as
well as Easter family events, including Pond-dipping and
Arts & Crafts.
More details on all our events are available
by visiting our website www.rspb.org.uk/

LITTLE SPAIN BOWLING CLUB
SELSEY CARPET BOWLS CLUB
Member of the West Sussex Carpet Bowls Association
Affiliated to the English Carpet Bowls Association
We again welcomed several new members in 2015 who had never
played carpet bowls before but are finding the game to be both
enjoyable and challenging in a friendly atmosphere.
In March 2015 the West Sussex Carpet Bowls Association were
invited to play a friendly return match at Slip End Village Hall in
Bedfordshire. Teams from Selsey, Birdham and Willowhale took
part and it was a very pleasant occasion. West Sussex carpet
bowlers do not play in Leagues with other counties and have only
fairly recently begun to play friendly matches. We all really enjoy
these matches and are learning from them.
In October West Sussex welcomed teams from Essex for a return
friendly match. This was held at Mundham Village Hall and proved
a great success with Essex winning once again but with a smaller
margin.
We held our Annual Dinner & Prize Giving at the Selsey Golf Club
in December. This was a most enjoyable evening with trophies
being presented to the winners and runners up of the competitions
held throughout the year. All the results are as follows:

The West Sussex Carpet Bowls Association will be holding an
Open Competition on Sunday, 3rd April this year at the Selsey
Centre. This is open to teams of fours or triples from other clubs in
West Sussex and is a very popular event. Spectators are welcome
to watch the matches and, if you have not seen carpet bowls
played before, why not come along. We guarantee you will see
some exciting matches. All profits will be donated to a local charity.
A reminder to members that the Club AGM will take place on
Sunday, 20th March at 2.30 pm. Any members wishing to raise any
matters or proposals should notify the Club Chairman as soon as
possible.
If you would like to come along and try your hand at carpet bowling,

Having a new puppy is such a magical time but the lovely fluffy
feelings can soon disappear when you struggle with toilet training
and play biting
of chewing and giving them something to do will help alleviate this.

Top Tips – Play biting, chewing and mouthing
1.
Be sympathetic, your puppy is teething and is trying to
sooth themselves, they also don’t know that our hands, ankles and
belongings are off limits.
2.
Your puppy has about 2 hours of chewing, play biting and
mouthing in them per day !!!! Provide lots of appropriate outlets
to use their mouth ie feed from kongs, rawhide chews (must be
supervised) and toys.
3.
Don’t leave personal items laying around as everything is
fair game to them and its better to not let them start chewing things
they shouldn’t in the first place.
4.
Supervision, supervision, supervision - Limit their ability to
get up to mischief without you seeing. Lots of baby gates around
will ensure they are in the same room as you.
5.
If they start to chew or bite, it may mean they are in need
3. When your puppy’s nose touches the spoon, say ‘good’ and give
them a treat from your pocket.
4. Hide the spoon behind your back after each go and then present
to your puppy for another chance to win a treat
3. Do this a few times until your puppy is happily touching the
spoon each time your present it.
4. Add the cue ‘touch’ each time before you hold the spoon out.
5. Once your puppy really gets it then you can start to hold your
spoon in different positions and say touch
Top Tip’s –
1. Only practice for a couple of minutes at a time, your puppy is
young and will find it hard to concentrate for long.
2. Say ‘good’ at the exact time your puppy’s nose touches the
spoon so they know why they are getting a treat and are more likely
to repeat.

Email: [email protected] www.crrc.co.uk
Hiya! It’s me, Hulky Bear again, the new Out and Abouter reporter
for the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre in Sidlesham.
We’ve had a lot going on here at the Centre recently! I heard on
the grapevine that the Centre is celebrating its 30th year this year!!
Can you believe it! 30 years of helping so many animals and
finding wonderful new homes for them. To celebrate this amazing
milestone we will be doing lots of ’30 themed’ fundraising this year
in the hopes of raising £30,000 to contribute towards some of the
many improvements we wish to make to the Centre. So keep your
eyes and ears peeled for ways in which you can help and join in to
help us reach our goal!
Another thing I must tell you about! In January we had our most
successful Viewing Day to date with a record 51 lots of people
coming to visit us in the hope of finding a new forever friend.
Around 40 of the cats we had here at the Centre were reserved and
our voluntary home visitors were pushed to their limit to get all of
the pre home visit checks done as soon as possible so that the cats
that were reserved could finally go to their forever homes. We are
always on the lookout here for volunteers that would like to carry
out home visits for us across the wide area that we rehome to, so if
you think this is something that you would like to be involved with,
then please give us a call here at the Centre.
My pet of the month is Juliette.
If you are interested in adopting a cat, kitten, rabbit or guinea pig
then please call us here at the centre on 01243 641409.
Juliette
Hi there! This is our beautiful Juliette. She is 2 years old and
arrived here at the Centre back in July 2015
due to her previous owner no longer being
able to cope with her and her four
kittens. Juliette is a lovely friendly girl
who loves lots of fuss and attention.
She really is a little sweetheart. She
has now been here for six whole
months and is desperately seeking
her forever home. Due to an
ongoing condition, Juliette would need
to be a house cat and would also need
to live in a house with no other cats. She
will also be covered by our Foster
Care Scheme which means that any
health problems she should have will be treated by our vet at no
cost to her new owner. For more information on her condition,
please give us a call here at the Centre. All of the staff here at the
Centre really can’t wait for Juliette to find the forever home that she
has been waiting so long for! So, if you think you can provide this
gorgeous girl with the loving home that she desperately deserves,
please do not hesitate to contact us here at the Centre.
Benson is a mischievous 4 month old Cockerpoo
who stole a piece of chicken satay on a skewer,
in ten seconds while his owner’s back was
turned! His owner tried to remove the stick
from his mouth, but it broke in half, leaving
the chicken and approx. 10 cm stick
with sharp point in his mouth, which he
instantly swallowed whole in one gulp.
He was rushed down to DVG at Emsworth, where we admitted him for a general anaesthetic to attempt to remove the
stick using the endoscope.
The other option would have been to open
up his
stomach surgically to remove the stick, which is
a longer procedure with greater risk and a longer recovery time.
Using the camera on the endoscope, we were able to see the stick
inside Benson’s stomach, and grab it, before gently pulling it out of
the stomach, up the oesophagus (food tube) and back through the
mouth. The chicken was still attached. Benson was only asleep
for about 20 minutes, and when he came round he was straight
back to being a lively puppy as if nothing had happened.
If the skewer had stayed in Benson’s stomach, the sharp point
would have pierced his stomach or intestinal wall, leading to a
very severe infection called peritonitis, which could have been life
threatening.
He had a lucky escape.
Benson luckily had Pet Insurance that had been given at our Leigh
Park surgery after Benson’s first puppy vaccination. The surgery
will give you the first four weeks free of charge and from there you
can activate a full adult policy.
A happy ending, but please remember with any food on skewers
to keep it well out of the reach of naughty dogs, including anything
that has been thrown away.
PS: We have a Viewing Day Saturday 26th March
12-2pm. Rehoming days are non-appointment days so
people thinking of adopting a cat can pop along. Otherwise
we rehome 7 days a week by appointment only.
