Jo Sonja Artists’ Colors are water-resistant and
contain ASTM lightfast pigments to ensure they will

Both opaque and transparent pigments are used in the Chroma’s Jo Sonja
line. Transparent pigments reflect light differently than opaque pigments,
which do not allow the light to pass through. Colors labelled as transparent
allow the light to pass through the transparent pigment particles, thus allowing
the undercoat to show through. These make wonderful colors for glazing.

New Year’s Greetings to all! Let’s have another wonderful year of painting!
In this year’s classes, we are going to be using Gel Retarder. I have really been enjoying the
JSTIPS
blendability of it as a painting medium. Basically, I use it one of two ways:
1. You can brush as a thin coat directly over the painting surface for an extended working
time . Then, paint or faux finish over top of it. Gel Retarder may need to be thinned a little
for climate conditions in your area. If your painting surface becomes tacky easily, add a
little Retarder Medium to thin.
2. You can use Gel Retarder as a painting medium to basecoat an object or blend shadows and
highlights, etc. Just remember do not use Gel Retarder over Clear Glaze Medium or Magic
Mix as it will dissolve your mixtures. Of course, you can use Clear Glaze Medium over top
of a surface that has been painted with Gel Retarder.
Kleister Medium is another fun medium. If added to your paint, it will provide extra body for
textural patterns. It is transparent and will also extend the blending time like Gel Retarder.
