Arkansas PROMISE Usual Services List
Arkansas Department of Career Education – This department offers job skills
and career education for youth, adults and persons living with disabilities.
Adult Education & Literacy – The Adult Education programs are offered
free of charge through 53 Adult Education Centers. Contact a local Adult
Education Center if you want to improve your basic educational skills,
such as math, reading and writing. See attached list of local offices.
Arkansas Literacy Councils Contact your local Literacy Council if you
want a tutor to help you with basic educational skills, such as reading and
writing. See attached list of local offices.
Arkansas Rehabilitation Services – Contact ARS if you need vocational
rehabilitation (VR) services. VR services include: counseling about the
kind of jobs you might be qualified for; training for jobs available in your
area; job placement; devices or equipment to help you accomplish the
functions of a job like keyboards, arm supports, or screen readers; and a
job coach to help you learn and remember the functions of a job. ARS
can provide services to students with disabilities transitioning from high
school to post-secondary education, training or employment; eligible
students may receive tuition assistance. Clients that are deaf or hard of
hearing receive services through the ARS Services for the Deaf and Hard
of Hearing (SDHH). List of local offices attached.
Arkansas Career Training Institute – The Arkansas Career Training
Institute (ACTI), is a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week residential facility with the
capacity to accommodate up to 320 residential students. ACTI provides
counseling and case management, vocational assessment and evaluation,
vocational training, employability skills, recreation and student living
services, behavior enhancement and social skills development,
psychological and medical services, and job placement. ACTI also
provides adult reading, math and writing classes, driver’s education
classes, and career readiness training. ACTI is located at 105 Reserve,

Department of Workforce Services – Contact DWS if you need help finding
work in your area, training for the type of jobs available in your area, certification
for workplace skills to show to employers, or to apply for unemployment
insurance benefits. You can also contact DWS for TANF benefits, which is
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. TANF includes time-limited cash
assistance to needy families with children, work training for parents, assistance
transitioning off of this cash benefit, intensive counseling and services such as
child care and transportation assistance. A list of local offices is attached.
Arkansas Work Force Centers – Contact a local workforce center if you need to
know what jobs are available in your area, job training, or help with resume
writing and job interviews. These centers also offer youth a summer work
program, work experience, and other educational opportunities. A list of local
offices is attached.
Arkansas Department of Human Services – Each County has at least one
local DHS office. A list of local DHS offices is attached. Contact your local
DHS office if you need service in any of the following areas:
Contact your local DHS office if you need help applying for state-funded or
subsidized health insurance, applying for food stamps, applying for help
paying utility bills, or emergency assistance.
Contact your local DHS office if you need help for children at risk of being
abused, neglected or have serious emotional problems, or help with foster
care, adoptions and information on strengthening families.
Division of Developmental Disabilities Services – Contact DDS if you
or your family needs independent case management, help finding
community providers, require integrated day care, need to apply for a
Medicaid waiver, or need information about the state’s Human

DDS-Children Services – The nurses, social workers and medical
secretaries at DDS Children’s Services can help you find help for children
with disabilities and chronically-ill children. You may also receive casemanagement or assistance paying for some services. Call (501) 682-8670
Division of Services for the Blind – Contact DSB if you are blind or
severely visually impaired and need help with training or education, job
placement, vocational counseling and evaluation of your skills and
interests. Call (501) 682-5463 or TDD: (501) 682-0093.
Community Mental Health Centers – Contact your local center if you
need therapy, group therapy, drug addiction prevention or treatment, or
additional support for your mental, behavioral or emotional health or for
your family. A list of Community Mental Health Centers is attached.
The Community Health Centers – Contact your local community health
center if you or anyone in your family needs primary medical care,
preventive medical care, dental care, or mental health care, regardless of
your ability to pay. A list of Community Health Centers is attached.
Arkansas Department of Health – Each County in Arkansas has a local County
Health office. Contact your local County Health Unit if you need medical care,
immunizations for you and your children, screening for children’s health
problems, testing for infectious diseases, help with quitting tobacco, nutrition
assistance and education through WIC, or information on living healthy. A list of
Local Health Units is attached.
Centers for Independent Living – Contact your local CIL if you need
information on independent living, referrals to community resources, training on
independent living skills, individual advocacy, peer counseling or information
about benefits and work incentives.

Arkansas People First – Contact People First if you need help advocating for
change in your community or want to learn more about self-advocacy. Selfadvocacy involves standing up for yourself, speaking for yourself and deciding for
yourself. APF meets regularly by phone and local chapters meet around the
state. Adult members of APF provide mentoring and are role models for youth

Arkansas Support Network – Arkansas Support Network (ASN) provides
support and assistance to a limited number of families who have children with
disabilities living in the home with them. ASN helps enable children, even those
with very severe disabilities and health care needs, to live in their homes and
participate in the life of their community. ASN’s job is to assist families to make

Disability Rights Center of Arkansas – DRC services are provided free of

legal representation, or if you think a state agency is discriminating against you

you need help addressing barriers in systems, agencies or communities. The
Council’s main objective is to improve the independence and productivity of

need to determine that you meet the qualifications before they can provide
