SUSAN`S LETTER
SUSAN’S LETTER
In 2010-2011, our community began to emerge from a national economic
crisis that devastated millions of families. Though Austin fared the downturn better than most communities, thousands of Austin families were
thrown into crisis through layoffs, home foreclosures and loss of medical
insurance. As an organization, LifeWorks was called upon to develop new
ways of helping more people resolve challenges that evolved daily.
Ever creative, our volunteers and staff rose to the occasion. We developed
programming to meet the immediate needs of families to get them back on
their feet and avoid continued dependence on social services.
We increased our counseling capacity and started a program using federal,
state and local funding that prevented hundreds of families from experiencing homelessness and the related crises that entails. We utilized state funding to establish our permanent supportive housing model for young adults.
In addition to this, we strengthened our resolve to increase our service
capacity 25% by breaking ground on the new 31,000 sq. ft. Sooch Foundation Youth & Family Resource Center for LifeWorks. The new center dramatically expands LifeWorks’ counseling, education and youth development
resources and builds our presence in the East Austin communities.
The dedication of our volunteers, donors and staff makes it possible for
LifeWorks to both adapt to the needs of our clients and continually focus on
growth. We thank each of you for your commitment to the potential of our
community’s youth and families.
