Spring/Summer 2013 21 M E N D O C I N O A R T C E N T E R ’ S 2 1 ST A N N U A L Mendocino Coast Garden Tour SATURDAY, JUNE 22 q 10:00am–5:00pm Enjoy a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a diverse selection of some of the Mendocino Coast’s most beautiful private gardens at the Mendocino Art Center’s 21st Annual Mendocino Coast Garden Tour. The day’s activities include a gourmet vegetarian luncheon at Ravens Restaurant at Stanford Inn by the Sea, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Mendocino Art Center. The popular garden shop and plant sale on the Art Center’s grounds will be held Friday, June 21, and Garden Tour day. The Garden Tour is the Art Center’s largest annual fundraiser. Among the gardens featured on this year’s self-guided tour: q A century old garden, planted by late botanist and horticulturalist Doris Youngstrom, hosting a wide variety of rare plants and trees. Paths wind through garden beds of 20 foot high rhododendrons, proteas, azaleas and strawberry manzanita trees. q A delightful garden with walkways, seating areas, patios, ponds, garden art, and an array of flowers, bushes and trees, providing sanctuary to hummingbirds and robins. q A staircase leading to an ocean-carved island makes the oceanfront property wonderfully unique. A whimsically sculptured concrete grotto and serpentine stone pathway reveal several hidden gardens. Garden Tour Poster Artist Mariko Irie Mariko Irie, a lifelong painter, was born and raised in Tokyo. She received her BFA at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, 1973. Mariko moved to Mendocino in 1982 to pursue her painting, and studied printmaking with Robert Rhoades and American Realism painting with Bill Martin at College of the 22 Redwoods in Fort Bragg. Mariko has been fascinated with painting watercolors for 20 years. She creates the paintings in a way that retains the distinctive look associated with the medium. Her paintings are rich in the traditional style and have a contemporary feel. Mariko’s paintings have been selected for posters for Winesong! 1995, the Mendocino Music Festival 2004, the Voices From Earth Concert 2005, Art in the Gardens 2008, and the cover of Mendocino Arts’ winter issue 2008. Her artwork is widely collected privately and publicly throughout the United States, Japan, England, Germany and Canada. Mariko is represented at the Northcoast Artists Gallery in Fort Bragg, and the Mendocino Art Center and Highlight Gallery in Mendocino. View her work online at www.mariko-irie.com q Garden Tour tickets ($40) and lunch tickets ($20) may be purchased by calling the Mendocino Art Center at 707 937-5818, ext. 10, or by visiting www.MendocinoArtCenter. org/Garden.html Mendocino Arts Magazine M E N D O C I N O A R T C E N T E R ’ S 2 1 ST A N N U A L Mendocino Coast Garden Tour SATURDAY, JUNE 22 q 10:00AM–5:00PM Enjoy a behind-the-scenes glimpse of some of the Mendocino Coast’s most beautiful private gardens on this self-guided tour.
