Air Canada rouge this year, posted a
net profit of $131 million for the year
compared to a net loss of $249 million
in 2011.
For the fourth quarter of 2012, Air
Canada reported net income of $8 million compared to a net loss of $60 million in the fourth quarter of 2011.
According to Calin Rovinescu,
President and Chief Executive Officer, “these results reflect the success of
Air Canada’s ongoing transformation
aligned with strict cost control and
disciplined capacity management. In
particular, the strong revenue performance of our international network
was led by significant improvements,
not only in the Pacific region but also
on the Atlantic where we overcame
challenges faced by the industry earlier in the year.”
According to WestJet President
and CEO Gregg Saretsky “we are very
pleased with the positive momentum
generated in 2012 that culminated with
us reporting record annual earnings, record high load factors and for the second consecutive quarter, we surpassed
our return on invested capital target of
12% by achieving 13.7%.
“Our positive momentum continues into 2013 as we launch WestJet
Encore, add to and evolve our airline partnerships and enhance value
to more business and leisure guests.
Our introduction of fare bundles and
WestJet Plus will include options for
more comfort, convenience and flexibility to our guests.”

Air Canada, WestJet
report record January
load factors
MONTREAL — Planes continue to
be full for both Air Canada and WestJet as both posted record load factors
for January.
Air Canada reported a record system load factor of 79.4% versus 79.1%
in January 2012, an increase of 0.3 percentage points. System traffic increased
0.3% on a system-wide capacity decrease of 0.1%. Air Canada reports
traffic results on a system-wide basis,
including regional airlines from which
Air Canada purchases capacity.
The result was led by traffic increases in the Atlantic and domestic Canada markets of 3% and 2.1% per cent,
respectively.
WestJet posted a record load factor
of 80.9%. Revenue passenger miles
(RPMs), or traffic, increased 7.7%
year over year, and capacity, measured
in available seat miles (ASMs), grew
6.4% over the same period. The airline
flew 1.5 million guests in January, a
year-over-year increase of 6.4% or approximately 87,500 additional guests.
“Positive momentum continues
into 2013 as January marks our seventh consecutive monthly load factor
record,” stated WestJet President and
CEO Gregg Saretsky. “Our forward
bookings remain strong.”

TORONTO — FunSun Vacations
(FSV) is now offering packaged vacations in the traditional ITC environment that feature more choice and
greater flexibility.
Following a successful soft launch
with Thomas Cook Canada’s internal retail network, FSV packages are
now available on Sabre Vacations and
Sirev, and will be opened up in Galileo,
Amadeus and B2C sites last week.
“By leveraging our unrivalled airline
and hotel supplier relationships, this
new initiative enables us to take full
advantage of the ITC market through
a different, more innovative approach,”
said Dean Moore, CEO, Thomas Cook
North America, parent company to
FSV. “It brings more flexible alternatives and dynamic pricing to the traditional vacation package market under
the FunSun Vacations brand.”
FSV packages stand out from other
package providers in a number of very
significant ways, he said:
t.PSFHBUFXBZTBOENPSFEFTUJOBtions: With departures available from
19 Canadian gateways, from Victoria
to St. John’s and everywhere in between, and 37 destinations, including U.S. city and Hawaii packages,

places as Turks & Caicos, Bermuda
and Barbados, as well as all the perennial favourites in Mexico, Jamaica and
Aruba, for the initial launch FSV offers an impressive 178 routes; “during
the soft launch, we sold FSV packages

that we could not sell traditionally

Grande Riviera Beach
& Villa Golf Resort
I recently spent a week at Sandals Grande Riviera
in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Though travelling from
Vancouver, BC, the travails of a day proved to be
more than worth it. I strongly recommend this resort
both as a honeymoon trip and a romantic rekindling
of one’s spirit. This resort is extensive and very well
kept, with astounding foliage and 15 restaurants, I
could easily live there for the rest of my life!
The staff is amazing—with their courtesy, attention
to detail, and their seemingly boundless willingness
to go above and beyond to ensure their guests are
happy. They even arranged for a surprise birthday
cake to be delivered to our villa the next morning.
(They had noted it on my ID at check-in.) Courtesy,
elegance and genuine friendliness are hallmarks of
the 850 staff members at Sandals Grande Riviera!
Highlights of our stay included the meals, the
incredible free show at the Amphitheatre and the
Chocolate Buffet night. There are dozens of other
activities including the swim-up bar, the ocean-going
pedal cycles and trips in the glass bottom boat. While
our villa neighbours next door were delighted with
the diving instruction and snorkelling opportunities,
my companion and I played several rounds of golf at
the nearby 18-hole course.
Best of all? Drinking that famous Blue Mountain coffee
while sunning at our private villa pool. Thank you
Sandals Grande Riviera for the best vacation of my life.

Carnival Cruise lines

of guests booked in a
single week
MIAMI — Carnival Cruise Lines set a
one-week reservations record, taking
gross bookings for 187,283 guests between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3, 2013.
Bookings were at unprecedented
levels across the line’s 24-ship fleet,
which operates three- to 18-day voyages from a wide range of North
American homeports as well as a
variety of European and Australian
itineraries.
Carnival President and CEO Gerry
Cahill attributed the record booking
activity to a number of factors, including continued recognition among
consumers of the exceptional value
provided by a Carnival cruise vacation, particularly given the line’s $500
million Fun Ship 2.0 product enhancement initiative, strong support from
the cruise line’s travel agent partners,
as well as recent sales and marketing
activities.
The latter includes the Vacation

of promotional activities surrounding the upcoming debut of Carnival

pleted January with a traffic increase
of 0.8%, representing passenger
growth of 1.2% for the month. Capacity grew by 4.7%, which resulted in a
load factor of 53.6%, a decline of 2.1
points from last year.
Figures for January show 116.9 million Available Seat Miles (ASMs) and
62.7 million Revenue Passenger Miles
(RPMs), compared to 111.6 million
ASMs and 62.2 million RPMs last year.
“These results are good for January, which is typically the slowest period of the entire calendar year,” said
Robert Deluce, president and CEO of
Porter Airlines. “Porter Escapes, our
new leisure vacation package division, is receiving an excellent response
from customers and is only beginning
to contribute to increased passenger
numbers as we expected. Ski trips to
Mont Tremblant, Vermont and the
Quebec City region are among the
most popular options at the moment.”
Royal Caribbean
introduces new
Project Sunshine
ships: Quantum and
Anthem of the Seas
MIAMI — Royal Caribbean International took a major step last week in
the development of the cruise line’s
next generation of cruise ships when
the first piece of steel was cut for the
first of two Project Sunshine ships.
The steel cutting took place at the
Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg,
Germany, where the two ships will
be built.
To celebrate the milestone, Royal
Caribbean announced the names of
the two new ships – Quantum of the
Seas, set to debut in fall 2014, and
Anthem of the Seas, which will follow
in spring 2015. They will be part of
the Quantum class of ships and will
build upon Royal Caribbean’s legacy
of revolutionary ship design.
“We are extremely excited to
celebrate this important milestone
for our first Project Sunshine ship.
After three years of design and
advance planning this is the first step
of the construction of the ship and
I look forward to seeing it all come
together in the coming months,” said
Adam Goldstein, President and CEO,
Royal Caribbean International. “The
new ship will be such a leap forward
in terms of vessel design and guest
experiences that we thought the name
Quantum of the Seas was perfectly
appropriate.”
Royal Caribbean International’s
legacy is built on introducing ‘at sea
firsts’ such as rock-climbing walls,
ice-skating rinks, surf simulators, zip
lines and even a tropical park with
over 12,000 live plants. The Quantum
class of ships will continue to build
on this legacy with unprecedented
experiences and amenities.
“Throughout our history we
have made huge strides in cruise
ship design and innovation and the
Quantum class will be no exception,”
said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and
CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd.
“We look forward to introducing
consumers to Quantum cruising.”

SPOTLIGHT TRAVEL FOR THE 50+
Amboise City, Loire Valley, France
CIT Tours’ new Europe itineraries
include visits to France, Italy and more
by Candice Abraham
CIT Tours’ new Europe itineraries for
2013 include Italy’s most charming
regions, France’s Loire Valley and a
chance to see the highlights of Britain,
Portugal, Spain or Croatia.
The new ‘South of France & Italy
Tour’ combines the highlights of Paris
with both the French and ItalianRiviera. During this 11-day journey,
travellers will explore charming hilltop towns and enjoy wine tasting in
Provence, discover Monaco and the
jewels of France’s Côte d’Azur before
continuing along the Italian Riviera
towards Santa Marguerita Ligure and
Cinque Terre. This tour is priced from
$4,299 per person.
The five-day ‘Devon & Cornwall’
Tour is perfect for those who wish to
explore the South West of England,
visiting ancient kingdoms and capitals, St. Michael’s Mount and England’s
most westerly point at Lands End. The
cost of this tour is $2,650 per person.
Both tours include accommodation

in select hotels or B&Bs, daily breakfast, hotel taxes and service charges,
transportation by deluxe 16-seater
mini bus and services of experienced
multilingual tour guides.
With no more than 16 passengers
travelling together on each departure,
CIT Tours’ small group touring concept offers the best of both worlds,
with the convenience of an organized,
escorted tour coupled with the more
relaxed pace normally associated with
individual travel. There are no worries
about how to reach the next destination, about museum opening hours or
line-ups, early morning departures or
longer waiting times associated with
large groups getting organized. Travelling in a small group also means being
able to go behind the tourist façade and
visit places often inaccessible to larger
coaches, or stopping along the way for
that special photo-op on a whim.

Insight Vacation’s Gold itineraries bring
romantic cruise options year-round
by Candice Abraham
Many couples are searching for romantic cruise options even after Feb.
14th is crossed off on the calendar.
That’s why Insight Vacations’ Gold
itineraries feature luxury hotels, fine
dining, smaller groups and the services of an Insight expert Tour Director, so couples will have all the indulgences they’re looking for in a special
cruise getaway at any time of the year.
Insight’s 14-day Gold ‘Elegance of
the Nile’ cruise brings luxury to another level on the MS River Tosca.
Guests will experience classic elegance and impressive décor with original artwork and rich, warm wood
paneling through the ship, blended
with modern amenities and comforts,
such as lavishly decorated, spacious
suites. On land, travellers will visit
Egyptian highlights such as King Tut’s
treasure in the Egyptian Museum, the
Valley of the Kings and the Pyramids
and Sphinx of Giza. Visitors will also
enjoy a sunset high tea in colonial

in Aswan.
The 11-day Gold ‘Elegance of
Athens, Mykonos & Santorini’ trip
offers a luxury journey through
Greece, with a high-speed ferry
whisking guests between the mainland and islands. In Athens, clients
stay at the Grande Bretagne hotel as
they explore this ancient city with
sightseeing and plenty of time for
shopping or relaxing at a café. Next,
travellers will spend three days on
the island of Mykonos, offering clients a chance to soak up the sun on
its beautiful beaches and a chance
to take in the famous architecture
of whitewashed houses. Following
a business class ferry ride, clients
will then arrive at Santorini, where
they’ll enjoy three nights of golden
sunsets at either the Andromeda
or Pegasus hotel. Guests can spend
their last few days in Greece at one
of Santorini’s hilltop cafes or on one
of the black, red and white sand
beaches before sitting down for a
delicious celebration meal on their
final night, complete with local specialties and Greek entertainment.
And for a limited time, your clients

Travellers wishing to spend time
in Nice, France, will enjoy Gateways’
three-day itinerary visiting the capital of Côte d’Azur, including private
transfer from the airport with an
English-speaking guide to the Hotel
la Perouse. That evening travellers
can stroll the charming streets of Nice
and the next morning will embark on
a half-day shared tour of the destination. Visiting sites like Castel Park,
Place Garibaldi and the Promenade
des Arts, travellers will also have the
opportunity to take in the olive tree
gardens of Cemenelum, see famous
landmarks at the Promenade des Anglais and experience the market in Old
Town. Cost for this tour starts at $449
per person, double occupancy.
Gateways’ first Italian pre/postcruise itinerary takes clients to Rome.
Staying at Barroco Hotel, located in the
heart of the city, travellers will begin
with a half-day guided tour, visiting
sites such as St. Peter’s Basilica. Your
clients will also have the opportunity
to explore many of Rome’s piazzas and
sample authentic Italian cuisine at a
trattoria. Clients can also add-on to
this itinerary to include entrance and
a tour of the Vatican Museum, a tour
of Ancient Rome and the Colosseum
or a full-day trip to Tuscany with a
winery visit. Gateways’ three-day
Rome itinerary is priced from $499
per person, double occupancy.
Another Italian favourite is Gatway’s three-day tour of Venice. Here
travellers will experience the romance
of this floating city, with a stay at UNA
Hotel Venezia. On this itinerary travellers can take in the sites during a
guided walking tour, with visits to famous locales like the Piazza San Marco, Santa Maria Formosa, Campo SS.,

Giovanni e Paolo and more. Optional
add-ons include a gondola ride or
boat tour through the Venice canals,
guided tour of Doge’s Palace and a
half-day tour of Murano, Burano and
Torcello. This itinerary starts at $525
per person, double occupancy.
Before embarking on a cruise in
Greece, or after the cruise is over, your
clients can spend three days in Athens
with Gateways’ Athens itinerary. Clients will stay at the five-star Electra
Palace Hotel Athens for two nights,
with private transfer from an Englishspeaking guide, enjoy continental
breakfast daily and visit sites such as
the Parliament House in Syntagma
Square, the Panathenaic Stadium, the
Presidential Palace and the Acropolis
— including visits to the Parthenon
and new Acropolis Museum. The Athens itinerary starts at $486 per person,
for double occupancy.
A tour of Barcelona is another option for a pre- or post-cruise itinerary.
Staying at the four-star Husa Avenida
Palace Barcelona, your clients will experience the best Barcelona has to offer; Plaça de Catalunya, Via Laietana,
the Gothic Quarter and Plaça Sant
Jaume are all part of this itinerary.
Travellers will also ascend Montjüic
Mountain for sweeping panoramic
views of the city and harbour before
touring the Olympic Stadium, Palau
Sant Jordi and Calatrava Tower. Other
add-ons for clients include an authentic Flamenco show performance, a
tapas walking tour or a gourmet bus
tour. Prices start at $420 per person,
double occupancy.
Last but not least is Gateways International’s Istanbul itinerary, which
includes a hotel stay at the four-star
Barceló Saray. On this three-day tour,

clients will feast their eyes on such sites

and the Grand Bazaar. And what trip
to Istanbul would be complete without a Turkish Bath experience? Luckily, on the Gateways’ Istanbul itinerary
clients will have the option to add-on
a visit to a Turkish Bath. Other addons include a cruise on the Bosphorus
and the chance to tour Istanbul by
night. Prices start at $398 per person,

in mind. Clients are free to do as they
please at the six destinations they stop
at along the Turkish Coast, but can
also choose from Contiki’s optional
ME Time add-ons as well, like with a
day trip to the Turkish mudbaths or a
night city tour of Marmaris. All meals
are included on this trip and guests are
free to use any of the on-board fishing
gear and snorkels as they sail along the
picturesque coast. Travellers can also
choose between twin-share private
cabins with en-suite bathrooms, or
sleep under the stars on comfortable
mattresses at deck level.
The ‘Croatian Island Cruising’ trip
is a 10-day journey to the picturesque
coastal towns and islands along the
Adriatic Sea. Starting and ending in
the seaside town of Split, clients will
also make their way to Makarska,
Trstenik, Dubrovnik, Korcula and
Hvar, all aboard a modern ‘A’ Class
boat with large decks. Breakfast is
served every morning and guests
are also treated to five lunches and
two dinners, but are encouraged to
explore their destinations and taste
the flavours of the country on their
own schedule and budget. When not
stretching out on deck and soaking
up the sun or enjoying a pint at a waterfront café, travellers are treated to
several Backstage Pass sightseeing inclusions, like a visit to the Old Town
in Korcula and a stop at Diocletian’s
Palace in Split. In their ME Time,
clients get total freedom to enjoy the
destination on their own or join one
of Contiki’s optional inclusions, such
as sea kayaking, a captain’s dinner in
Trstenik and a locally guided tour of
the walled city of Dubrovnik.
Young travellers will find their sea
legs on an island hopping adventure
with Contiki’s nine-day ‘Mykonos &
Island Cruising’ itinerary. Starting
and ending in Athens, guests on this
itinerary will also spend three nights
at Contiki’s Feature Hotel on Mykonos
and then set sail for Kusadasi in Turkey, Crete and Santorini. With plenty
of Backstage Pass inclusions, guests
will visit the local bazaar in Kusadasi,
see the famous windmills in Mykonos and visit Santorini’s main town
of Fira. When not cruising along the
waterways, travellers have plenty of
ME Time to mingle with the locals
at waterfront cafés or sip on cocktails
as the sun goes down. The ME Time
optionals on this trip will appeal to
history buffs as they can choose to do
either (or both) a tour of the classic
Greek archaeological site of Ephesus
in Kusadasi or a guided tour of the famous Acropolis in Athens.
To qualify for Contiki’s Early Payment Discount of 7.5%, travellers
must book and pay in full on or before

CANCUN — The chic Sun Palace
Cancun is a couples-only destination
that is a perfect place to relax.
Given a top ranking by TripAdvisor,
the Sun Palace was fifth out of 172
properties in Cancun.
The property draws an international
clientele. The daily schedule features a
few sports activities such as volleyball
in the pool or on the beach. At
the lobby bar at night, karaoke, a
Caribbean party and couples nights
were suggested. Even a fire show is
presented on the beach one night.
Individual beach beds right by the
ocean are set up with an umbrella and
servers take your order from the bar
and the grill all day long. Three infinity pools and a swim up bar make it
less crowded and give you the opportunity to also serve yourself and relax
under the sun.
The beach is a little rough but you
can still swim in the salty and refreshing water of the Caribbean Sea.
Accommodation features a double
Jacuzzi and nightly turndown service
and the modern design inspires serenity and romance. Looking through the
spacious glass door of your balcony is
reminiscent of being on a cruise ship
as we only see the magnificent view of
the clear turquoise waters.
The Diamond concierge service

Mexico to allow entry
of underage tourists
without notarized
letter of consent
MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Claudia Ruiz
Massieu, and the Commissioner
of the National Institute of Migration (INM), Ardelio Vargas Fosado,
agreed to suspend a measure that
required minors (under 18 years
of age) travelling alone or accompanied by a third party of legal age
(grandparent, aunt/uncle, sibling, or
other), that stated the need to present a notarized letter of consent
from both parents or the minor’s
legal guardians or those with parental authority, duly legalized by the
Mexican Consulate or Embassy in
Canada and translated into Spanish.
In the aim of facilitating the travel of national and foreign tourists,
Mexican immigration authorities
will allow the entry to and departure
from Mexican territory of minors
travelling with at least one parent;
with the person who holds parental
authority; alone or accompanied by
an adult who does not hold parental
authority; with the presentation of
the minor’s valid passport.
The requirements established
by the Canadian government for
minors to enter and depart from
Canada, should be consulted at the
following webpage: travel.gc.ca/
travelling/children.
Secretary Ruiz Massieu and Com-
missioner Vargas agreed to temporarily suspend the measure contained
in the new National Migration Law
while a solution is found to fulfill
the requirement of the law without
installing roadblocks or excessive
paperwork to tourists intending to
travel to Mexico.
President Peña Nieto has promised
to create measures which bring efficiencies to the migration process for
national and international tourists.

WestJet to launch
Calgary-Dallas,
Toronto-Myrtle Beach
flights
CALGARY — WestJet is launching
new nonstop service between Toronto
and Myrtle Beach and between Calgary and Dallas beginning this spring.
Flights on both routes will be operated
using the airline’s fleet of Boeing NextGeneration 737 aircraft.
Starting May 2, WestJet will introduce twice-weekly service on Thursdays and Sundays between Toronto
and Myrtle Beach. Daily service between Calgary and Dallas-Fort Worth
will begin April 29. Flights for both
services, featuring introductory fares,
are now on sale.
“We are very proud to announce
our 19th and 20th U.S. destinations
and our 82nd and 83rd destinations
overall,” said Chris Avery, WestJet
Vice-President, Network Planning, Alliances and Corporate Development.
Dallas-Fort Worth International
Airport is the fourth-largest airport
in the United States, as well as a major hub for WestJet’s partner, American
Airlines. WestJet’s relationship with
American Airlines will enable guests to
access three roundtrip flights a day between Calgary and Dallas, a key Western business route, as well as American’s extensive network beyond Dallas.
Within Canada, WestJet is also increasing the number of flights between
Toronto and Vancouver, Edmonton,
Calgary, Saskatoon and Regina, and
will introduce new nonstop service
between Toronto and Fort McMurray.
The airline will also increase to two
flights daily from one between Calgary and Los Angeles, and to 11 from
seven flights weekly between Toronto
and Orlando.
World’s first A380
facility fully open for
business in Dubai
DUBAI — Emirates and Dubai Airports have announced the successful
completion of the phased launch of
Concourse A – the home of the A380
and the world’s first purpose-built facility for the aircraft at Dubai International.
All 20 A380 capable contact gates
and Emirates First Class and Business
Class lounges, which comprise 29,000
square metres of the facility, are now
fully operational after a five-weeklong phase-in period.
During the first month of operations
following its inaugural flight on Jan. 2,
2013, EK003 bound for Heathrow and
operating from one of the four contact
stands opened during Phase 1, Concourse A has handled 461,972 pieces
of luggage carried on over 2,450 flights
serving 589,234 passengers.
“The full opening of Concourse
A is a significant milestone and
achievement in supporting and
enabling the continued growth of
Emirates, and our focus and com-
mitment to being a leader in offering
our customers innovative products
and services that provides them with
an unsurpassed travel experience.
With a current fleet of 31 A380s and
a further 59 on order, Emirates is the
largest operator of this aircraft in the
world, and it is only fitting that we
have a world class facility that meets
this need and represents our leadership in this regard,” said Tim Clark,
President, Emirates Airline.
“Much like the opening of Terminal 3 in 2008, the phase in of Concourse A has resulted in the seamless introduction of world-class
infrastructure that responds to the
rapid growth of Emirates and caters
to the needs of its discerning and
truly global customer base,” said Paul
Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports. ”
Concourse A is part of the Terminal
3 complex built for the use of Emirates, from where its passengers can
travel to its network of 21 A380 destinations across Europe, North America, Australia and Asia.
With 11 floors and a total built-up
area of 528,000 sqm, Concourse A is
connected to Concourse B and Terminal 3 via an underground train. Unlike any other airport facility in the
world, the First Class and Business
Class lounges have dedicated floors
that offer direct and convenient access
to aircraft boarding gates. The lounges,
which extend the entire length of the
concourse, are the largest in the world
and offer customers’ fine dining with
showcase kitchens, conference rooms,
business centres, a Timeless Spa, entertainment zones, dedicated smoking
areas as well as children’s play areas.
The First Class lounge passengers also
have the added convenience of a dedicated duty free shopping area and a Le
Clos wine cellar.

Myrtle Beach celebrates CanAm Days with events, concerts
along scenic Grand Strand
The Myrtle Beach area is celebrating the 52nd annual
Canadian-American Days from March 9–17 with a lineup of
fun events plus giveaways and discounts.
Visitors can choose from a variety of largely free events
and activities including band concerts, the festival celebration
expo, a St. Patrick’s Day parade and dance and much more.
Discounts and special offers are also available for area at-
tractions, restaurants, golf and services. “Canadian-American
Days events are meant to celebrate our snowbird visitors,
who escape the cold and snow for the moderate climate and
wealth of attractions in the Myrtle Beach area,” said Brad
Dean, MBACC president and CEO.
“Our Canadian visitors are very important to us, especially
as they tend to visit during non-peak travel times for our area.
Many of these folks have been travelling to our destination
