The Museum of the Gulf Coast
takes an eclectic look at Southeast
Texas history through the ages.
The museum boasts the largest
mural in the area – a 125-foot
painting highlighting significant
events in the evolution of the
region; a replica of Janis Joplin’s Porsche; the original light from
the Sabine Pass lighthouse; and rare decorative artifacts from
around the world. Hours: Mon. – Sat. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.;
Sun. 1- 5 p.m. Admission: $2-$4.

Pleasure Island lives up to its name in the 18.5-mile-long manmade body of land extending from the mouth of the Neches
River on the northwest to the Sabine Causeway on the southeast and is surrounded by Sabine Lake and the Intracoastal
Waterway. Yacht Club, a disc-golf course, playgrounds and
picnic facilities make the island attractive to guests.

White Haven

built as a New England
Colonial-style mansion.
However, subsequent
owners changed the
structure of this splendid
house to a Southern Greek
Revival-style. Collections
include candelabras from
the Shah of Persia, and a French screen from the collection of
Empress Carlotta of Mexico. The home is owned by Lamar
State College-Port Arthur. Tours by appointment.

The Rainbow Bridge and Veterans Memorial Bridge
Over the Neches River on Highway 87, north of Port Arthur,
Port Arthur, TX 77642
The Rainbow Bridge, completed in
1938, is the tallest bridge on the
Gulf Coast. It rises to a height of a
20-story building and clears the
river by 177 feet. The new
companion bridge, the Veterans
Memorial Bridge, to the east has
143 feet navigational clearance, and its claim to fame is that
it is the only cable-stayed bridge built on a Texas Highway.

On Sept. 8, 1863, the United States
Navy attempted to invade Confederate
Texas via the Sabine Pass. Lt. Dick
Dowling and 46 of his men used six
cannons to defeat four gunboats
and halt the invasion. A statue of
Dowling now stands in the park.

Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Dedicated in 2000, the 17-foot-high
bronze statue of Our Lady of
Guadalupe was sculpted by artists
Miguel Angel Macias of Mexico City
and Douglas Clark of Port Arthur.
The statue is set upon rocks brought
to the site from Mount Tepeyac,
Mexico City, where the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego.

Veterans Memorial Park
On Highway 87, near the Veterans Memorial Bridge, Port

The park has walls bearing the names from Orange and
Jefferson counties of living and deceased veterans from the
