BOD CORNER | By Yale Feldman
Everyone take a deep breath. We have made it through
one of the most challenging winters in the 50
year Bryce Resort history and have just come out of an
epic period of rainfall to begin our golf season.
Can it get any worse for a resort that relies on Ski and
Golf for its success and member enjoyment? It shouldn’t,
and things are looking up. Your Board of Directors has
undergone an extensive review of finances, plans and
options. The recent announcement of a necessary
assessment to make up our shortfalls, due to the weather
impacted ski season is less than most of us thought it
would be. Now we can relax our stress levels and turn
our attentions to the search for a new General Manager,
the filling of the open position for Food and Beverage
Manager and the ever important elections for the
pending Board of Directors openings.
There are three positions that need to be filled for the
fiscal year beginning November 1. These include the
outgoing President, Jim Fagan, Secretary, Dan Klug, and
Director, Flynn Hulver. All three have done a diligent and
effective job and are completing their three-year terms.
We need to fill these three slots, to maintain our 7-person
board. Officers will be elected by the new Board for the
upcoming year, after the conclusion of the announced
election results at the annual meeting, the second
weekend in October. As you see by the challenges we
have had in the current year with weather, management
and physical condition related issues, being a
participating Board member is extremely important
to the financial and operating health of our resort. As
members, this is extremely important to everyone to
maintain satisfactory levels of service for your enjoyment
and to bring in increased outside revenues. These are
integral factors to the direct and indirect value of your
membership. Your participation will matter.
It is important that we get interested, enthusiastic and
qualified candidates on our slate for the member vote.
You should strongly consider running and volunteering
your time, knowledge, skills and dedication to the success
of YOUR resort. If you have a financial background, you
qualify; if you have a sales and marketing background,
you qualify; if you have an engineering background, you
qualify; if you have a Food and Beverage background,
you qualify; If you spent your career in the military; you
qualify; if you were in Human resources or administration,
you qualify; if you were a household engineer and
administrator, you qualify. Get the point?? It takes an
extensive span of combined knowledge and experience
to have an effective Board. Almost all accomplishments
and skill sets will qualify you, but when it’s all said and
done, the combined most important qualifications
are a love of Bryce, the enthusiasm to help make a
positive difference and the willingness to participate
and make contributions to the work of the Board. These
characteristics will carry you over any rough spots or lack
of specific knowledge.
Let’s get to the process:
The Board of Directors has selected a Nominations and
Election Committee consisting of qualified and interested
members, and headed up by Jean Klinge, an engaged
member and former Director. This group has taken on
the responsibility of accepting statements from active
members indicating their interest in being considered
for nomination. Potential candidates will meet with the
Nominations Committee, whereupon, the Committee will
submit their recommendation of candidate nominees
to the Board of Directors. Before the end of August, the
Slate of Candidates will be finalized and announced.
Now is the time to contact the Nominations and Election
Committee to express your interest and begin the
process. You will be requested to prepare a one-page
Bio which should summarize your professional experience
and membership experience and should have a clear
statement as to your vision of how you believe you can
bring value to the resort as a member of the Board. You
should also comment on your ability and willingness
to commit the time to prepare for and serve on a
committee, attend monthly Board meetings, and pre
meeting Executive Sessions, quarterly working sessions
and participate in phone and email communications as
necessary. Our voting members need to feel confident
in your commitment. Include a picture, so that when
published, other members will have an opportunity to
“know you when they see you”. (Please refer to the
Members section of our website for Bios of existing Board
Members as examples). You should then expect to
attend an interview and general meeting session with
the Nominations and Election Committee. If selected,
you will be notified, and your name will be added to
the proposed slate of candidates to be presented to
the Board. If selected for nomination consideration (and
we hope to have 5 or 6 candidates for the three open
slots), you will be expected to attend the Closing pool
party in late August, where you will be introduced to
the members, and a “Meet and Greet” in September
where you will have the opportunity to meet one on one
with members. Capping off the election period will be
the Town Hall in September, where all of the candidates
will participate in a panel to share answers to specific
questions as well as questions from the floor. This will
be in a casual and interactive setting and will allow
members to better understand your position(s) on issues
and opportunities facing the Resort. These are all great
opportunities to make yourself known and let others
know your position and philosophy in order to make clear
choices when they cast their votes.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for
considering making a most significant contribution to
your Resort. We are unique in this day and age as we are
completely member owned and it is only through the
participation of active members that we can continue to
remain successful

CONCEDED PUTT | By Dean Freeman
Old man winter paid us a visit the other day. I wonder
if anyone lost flowers, vegetables, or other plant life
when we had what I would consider a very mild frost.
37 degrees was the low and we saw some frost out on
the golf course. I’m hoping that none of you actually
lost any of your plants, but whoa-nelly, that was a
close one. I’ve never seen frost in May, I’ve also never
seen a contested convention; doesn’t mean it won’t
happen. I appreciate bizarre weather, it reminds us all
of just how small we are. Forces far greater than the
likes of us exist in the world and when the time is right,
you get to see just how formidable nature can be. One
happy result of our odd weather has been the relative
absence of biting insects so far this season. Don’t get
me wrong, they’re coming. Just the other day, in what
one might describe as enigmatic happenstance, I
saw a “no see um”; go figure. Rest assured, we’ll be
in for more madness as time moves on. I’m not going
to talk about the ridiculous rainfall we’ve recently
encountered; I’m certain all the other articles you’ve
read thus far have covered that topic sufficiently.
We are recovering nicely though, and as I’ve noted
many times in the past; you take what Mother Nature
throws at you with a smile on your face or next time
she might be inclined to wipe it off. Since most of you
stop reading after the first paragraph or two I’ll get
this exciting news out of the way while I hopefully still
have your attention. We have a new fun tournament
to announce coming this month. The Original Nine
Tournament will showcase the original nine holes that
existed when your golf course was first introduced. We
will have food, fun, and music out in front of the old,
old pro shop what is now the beautiful home, “Mid-OGreen” out behind number 12 green. This promises to
be a super fun afternoon of golf and nostalgia. Inquire
in the pro-shop for details.
Revenue is down due to the insane amount of rain we
experienced in April and May. This means we’ve got a
lot of catching up to do. We have sacrificed so much
this season in an effort to help get over our budget
shortfall, I’d hate to see our efforts diminished because
our revenue stream took another hit due to weather.
We need play on the course and so do you. The better
job we do holding the budget line in golf, the less our
membership will pay in assessments. We’re saving as
much as we can in regard to expenses, we need more
revenue to make up for a rain soaked April and May.
Please support your golf course by playing an extra
round or two this summer and remember to purchase
a cart and bring a friend or two. Walking rounds don’t
do much for our bottom line. We’ve also lowered
prices on food and beverages in the grill and on the
beverage cart. Grabbing a snack helps bring much
needed money back into our coffers. Don’t forget,
no outside alcohol is allowed on the course or on our
property, and with our new low prices you can afford
to have a little extra fun.
Summer is here and we’re pretty much ready for
action. The daizies have their flowers and mulch out
and we’ve been doing our best to keep your course in
tip top condition. We hope to have the paving on 16
done sometime this month. The project was backed
up due to all the rain, but we hope to get back in line
later in the month. Many of our other projects are on
hold till our budget concerns abate, so there’s not
much else to report other than beautiful conditions
and lots of fun. Now get out there and play some golf.
