EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Oregon Adopt-A-River, a partnership between SOLVE and the Oregon State
Marine Board, supports individuals and organizations in cleaning and preserving
their favorite stretch of waterway (river, lake or stream) anywhere in the state of
Oregon, while focusing on watershed health and a commitment to stewardship.
The commitment is for two years doing at least two cleanups per year. Many
volunteers do much more!
Adopting a waterway is simple. It only takes one person to get things started.
Community organizations, fishing or boating clubs, school groups, businesses,
associations or any environmentally concerned citizen can Adopt-A-River. Your
projects can be as large as you like. Every project, no matter how large or small,
makes a big difference!
Currently, close to 500 miles of rivers, lakes, and streams are adopted by 130
volunteers and community groups. Adoptions cover the entire state including
sections of the Sandy, Willamette, Columbia, Clackamas, Salmon, Umpqua,
Powder, Deschutes, Rogue, North and South Santiam, Siletz, Coquille, Molalla
and John Day Rivers. Many smaller creeks and streams have been adopted as well.
In 2012 1,241 volunteers:
Removed 33,580 lbs. of litter and illegally dumped waste.
Recycled 117 tires, 350 lbs. of glass, paper and plastic, and
scrap metal.
in 133 cleanup events.

CURRENT ADOPTIONS
The success of each project depends on well-organized event coordinators. These are the volunteer leaders who, with support and technical assistance
from SOLVE, identify community needs for projects, act as team leaders, contact local garbage haulers, help recruit and supervise volunteers,
encourage the community to participate, order project materials, oversee the work, and ensure the safety of volunteers.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Molalla River Cleanup and Corridor Enhancement:
Willamette River Springwater Trail Cleanup:
Twelve miles of the Molalla River and the surrounding roads were cleared of
garbage including aplicances, tv’s tires, car parts, camping gear, household
garbage, and drink containters. Over 75 volunteers came together to remove
2,100 pounds of trash!
BergerABAM employees and their families volunteered to remove trash from
along the Willamette River in Southeast Portland. The volunteers covered
almost 3 miles of river and removed 240 pounds of trash and 1 tire.
Dabney State Park Sandy River Cleanup:
Volunteers from Columbia Riverkeepers and other groups met and
gathered trash alongside the banks of the Sandy River near the confluence
with the Columbia River. Participants removed 200 pounds of trash from
this heavily used recreational area.
Thomas Creek Cleanup:
A small but strong group of 13 volunteers including Wells Fargo employees
and members of the West Salem High School Football Team worked hard to
remove 300 pounds of trash from this creek East of Salem. Volunteers also
removed 8 tires from along the creek.
Grants Pass High School Rogue River Cleanup:
Students from Grants Pass High School decided to make a difference by
cleaning up the Rogue River near their school. The students were surprised
by how much trash they collected in less than 3 hours, 200 pounds!
Yaquina River Fall Cleanup:
Volunteers from BergerABAM get ready to cleanup the Willamette River along
the Springwater Cooridor Tail
Over 160 volunteers participated in this annual cleanup, over half of which
were local youth. These volunteers removed 2,850 pounds of trash from
the river. Many local groups participated in the cleanup including Georgia
Pacific, Siletz Valley School, and Thompson’s Sanitary Service.
