OPEN MONDAYS beginning June 6
Traveling Exhibit
Coming in June
Experience Tokyo’s vibrant culture
in a new interactive traveling exhibit
at the Children’s Discovery Museum.
In Hello from Japan! families are
transported to two distinct areas of
Tokyo that exist side by side: one
serene and exquisite, the other too
cute for words.
The beautiful, natural Shinto shrine
park invites children to build a
bridge, crawl through a forest,
encounter kami spirit, and make
a wish at a wishing tree.
Kawaii Central is a street scape
inspired by Tokyo’s bustling Harajuku
district, bursting with color, trendy
shops and cuter than cute Kawaii
styles. Kids sing karaoke, smile for
the photo booth camera, serve up a
seasonal Japanese meal, and design
adorable mascots for their families.
Together, the exhibit highlights how
old and new traditions coexist in
Japan, giving visitors a family-friendly
window into Japanese culture.
This exhibit was created by the
Children’s Museum of Manhattan and
is part of the Freeman Foundation
Asian Culture Exhibit Series, funded
by the Freeman Foundation and
administered by ACM.

GUIDE TO
What you’ll see, study
and play at our new exhibit!
This summer we are thrilled to
welcome Hello from Japan! to the
Museum. This 1,500 square-foot
exhibit showcases both the country’s
modern and traditional cultures.
When guests walk into the third
floor of the Museum, they will get an
introduction to modern-day Japan
in the “Tokyo Streetscape” area.
They can view maps, photos and
information on Japan’s topography,
high-speed bullet trains and food.
They’ll learn fun facts too! For
instance, how many disposable
pairs of chopsticks are used in
Japan each year? 24,000,000,000!
Of course, some guests may prefer
to head straight to the “Dress
Kawaii Storefront.” This cutesy,
dress-up area has about a dozen
cubby holes full of clothes, capes,
tails, hats, wigs, glasses and more
with inspirational photo montages
of dressed-up Tokyo teens on the
wall. A cash register lets kids ring
up their creations.
Leaving the hustle of modern-day
Japan, guests will cross the JinguUji bridge and be welcomed into the
Yoyogi Park with its Shinto Shrine.
The Inari Okami Shrine looks like a
small wooden house with a large
metal bell kids can ring to light up
two lanterns. Before visiting the
shrine, guests can purify themselves
at the “Temizuya Water Basin.”
Water effects will allow guests to
perform the act of purification of
the mouth and hands.
Next to the shrine is the “Crawl
Through Forest,” a small forest of
bamboo trees where kids can hunt
for Jizo statues, a beloved Buddhist
figure that protects women and
children and helps guide travelers.
At the “Kimono Peek Through,”
guests can stick their heads through
images of people wearing kimonos
and see kids celebrating the
Shichi-Go-San Festival Day.
Guests won’t want to miss “Pop Pop
Karaoke,” featuring a karaoke machine
that plays Japanese children’s songs
complete with cartoon characters and
English subtitles.
“Bento Joy” teaches guests about
restaurant cuisine. Three wooden
bar stools at a counter face a
kitchen with enough room for
about four kodomo (kids) to serve
up bowls of rice, fish, sushi, and
udon soup.
Before leaving the “Tokyo
Streetscape,” guests will want to
visit the “Purikura Photobooth” to
snap a fun picture of themselves,
learn how to say and write Japanese
words in the “Katakana Club” and
make Yuru-Kyara mascots in the
“Mascot Maker and Tracing Table.”
And no trip to Japan is complete
without a stop at the “Wishing
Tree,” where guests can write down
their hopes and dreams and leave
them on the branches.
It is our wish that our guests love
Hello from Japan! as much as we do!

We Had
Some Great
Events
This Year!
On March 4, nearly 250 attendees
enjoyed great fashion, food, and fun
with friends at the annual Ladies
Luncheon and Style Show hosted by
the Children’s Discovery Museum
Foundation and presented by CEFCU.
This year’s program included inspiring
attire from 13 local boutiques
showcasing stunning new looks for
any occasion. Attendees also
supported the Museum by shopping
the event’s eclectic vendors and
participating in the silent auction.
All proceeds from the event will
benefit the mission of the Children’s
Discovery Museum—enabling us
to reach more children with quality,
hands-on exhibit experiences and
innovative programming.
On April 22, beautiful melodies filled
the air at Second Presbyterian Church
as local physicians shared their musical
gifts with Museum supporters gathered
for the 11th Annual Doctors in Concert
event. Attendees savored decadent
desserts provided by Chef Maria at
Beyond Decadence Bakery and took
part in the silent auction at the postconcert reception. Funds raised from
the event will support the renovation
of several medical related exhibit
components at the CDM that have
been well loved by visitors.
Events like the Ladies Luncheon and
Style Show and Doctors in Concert
provide crucial financial support for
the Children’s Discovery Museum
Foundation. Every sponsor, donor,
performer, participant and attendee
plays an integral role in our success.
The CDM is grateful for those that
have given so generously toward
these events.
