There are two major -- and logical -- reasons for you and your family to think glass when you do your own shopping. First: As a member of the community, you show pride and support of your glass-making neighbors, and a healthy regard for your economic community. The second important reason for choosing glass is glass itself. Glass is quality packaging, whether you're buying pickles or pop. Food and drinks taste better in glass. And, after being opened, glass containers are easily resealed to preserve freshness. What's more, you can see what you are buying...a point that the majority of consumers appreciate. Glass manufacturing was born in Brockway. We have been producing glass containers since 1907. As a Company and a community we all share in the success and responsibility of supporting local industries, like ourselves. We thank and praise those who have played an integral role in our past, present, and future. LOOKING TOWARD 2015 The Fourth of July Committee is in need of a new Parade Committee and Children’s Game Committee. If interested in continuing these great July 4th events, please contact Jeff Gankosky at 265-0628. These are opportunities to be a part of a Brockway tradition! ADAMS Clearfield-Jefferson Drug Free Communities Coalition This year’s Fourth of July booklet is dedicated to the memory of Monsignor George J. Adams who was an integral member of the Committee for nearly 20 years both as co-chairman and chairman of the Patriotic Committee. Monsignor Adams was born in Toronto, Ohio in 1925 and moved with his family to Brockway in 1940 as his father began work at Brockway Clay Co. For the next two years he attended Brockway-Snyder High School returning to Ohio for his senior year at St. Charles High School in Columbus. He received a bachelor’s degree from St. Vincent College in Latrobe in 1946 completing his theology studies at St. Mary of the West Seminary in Norwood, Ohio. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1950. For the next 45 years, Father Adams was an active priest in the Steubenville Diocese of Ohio returning to Brockway in 1995 after retiring to care for his mother. Once back in Brockway, Monsignor became active in the parish and the community. He volunteered to say Mass at St. Tobias to alleviate some of the burden for Monsignor Heberlein. He was the main speaker for the 30th Annual Old Fashioned Fourth Patriotic Program. Following that little taste of Brockway, he joined the Committee as Co-Chairman of the Patriotic Program helping out another long time member, Floyd Fustine. Later on he became Chairman and remained so until 2013 when he thought it necessary to pass the torch onto a younger set of people. 2 Hepler’s Beer Barrel 1538 Main Street Brockway, PA 15824 814-265-2337 135 Midway Dr., Suite A DuBois, PA 15801 814-371-9002 Courier-Express & Tri-County Sunday Paesano Pizza 524 Main Street Brockway, PA 15824 814-265-4285 Pizza - Pasta - Hoagies 500 Jeffers St. DuBois, PA 15801 814-371-4200 ext. 2110 3 Sigma Starr’s Trailer Sales Clay Plant Road P.O. ADAMS (CONT.) Monsignor was also a member of the Executive Committee, rarely missing a meeting on the fourth Monday of every month. Here he kept us on track, critiqued the programs and instilled in us the importance of God at the center of our mission. If for some reason he missed a meeting due to his duties as a retired priest or being out of town, he would find out what was accomplished at the last meeting and offer his suggestions. Monsignor made it a point to put God first. Each meeting was opened and closed with a prayer asking God for His guidance for this family oriented program. He taught us that without God, it would be impossible to have such a wonderful program. Monsignor chaired his last Patriotic Program in 2013 where he thanked everyone for their support and dedication to this celebration over the years. On October 2nd, Monsignor passed away in Pittsburgh after a short illness. His funeral Mass was conducted at St. Tobias, returning to Toronto, Ohio to be laid to rest next to his mother and father. Monsignor, we thank you for your many years of hard work, dedication and service to this Committee. We thank you for counting us among your friends and family and for making Brockway a better place to live and visit. We thank you for keeping us on the right track. We hope to continue with your enthusiasm as we plan future celebrations. Thank you. The Fireworks opening this year is in memory of Msg. George J. Adams 3 Parkside Complex Brockway Glass Headquarters Restored! At one time or another, we have all known someone that worked in the former Brockway Glass Headquarters. We have all heard stories about the business decisions that were made in the “war” room. In times past, the men entered the building in suits and ties and the women in dresses and heels. This corporate mecca located at 1200 Wood Street was the hub of Brockway, PA, if not the hub of the entire glass industry. As time progressed and things changed, the once state of the art building became vacant and the condition declined. Brockway Glass moved on and other tenants moved in and out. The building was no longer a meeting place for groups or social gatherings in the community. In 2010, Guardian Elder Care stepped in to restore this once beautiful building to its formal glory. A collaborative effort among community, local and governmental leaders worked tirelessly to bring education to the area with the Brockway Center for the Arts and Technology and Butler County Community College. This once vacant building now offers 23 apartments, a café that is open to the public, a doctor’s office, rehabilitation services, two education facilities, an art studio and a beauty salon. Fountains, courtyards, pergolas and an amazing veranda are just a few of the wonderful amenities that Parkside has to offer. All in one beautiful and welcoming building that is back to its original state of being the hub of the Brockway community. 4 Foradora Insurance, Inc. Highland View 80 N. Joel served in many capacities with the 4th of July Committee during his lifetime. He was an assistant to the Bike Race Directors for the first few years of the race from 1981 to 1986. Joel then took over the reins from 1987 to 1993 (7 years) as the race director. After that tenure, he continued to compete in races until 2007. Besides being a committee administrator, Joel was quite an accomplished bike racer for a period of 30 plus years. In 1982 Joel competed in Brockway’s second Fourth of July race. He continued to ride either a road or a tandem bicycle in almost all of the races up until 2007. He won many awards in various categories on his road bike before switching over to ride a tandem bike. On his tandem bike he was the annual winner (1st place) in the tandem racing category along with his riding partners - wife, Karen and his other tandem rider, Steve McGarvey. Joel also served as a bicycle race consultant to race directors in the local area. After an extended illness Joel passed away on January 9th, 2014. He is sadly missed by his wife, Karen and family, along with his many bike race competitors and friends associated with the 4th of July bike race. He will be recognized on this year’s bike race t-shirt, The 33rd Annual Brockway Bike Race. Thank you Joel! 12 At Brockway’s OldFashioned Fourth of July Celebration, two people can race side by side on this colorful obstacle course as their adrenaline takes them on a journey that will end with one winner! Italian Street painting has a very long history. During the Renaissance in Europe, artists would travel to various towns to recreate famous religious paintings in the streets for donations and hospitality. Today, this art form is still very much alive in Europe, especially in Italy and Germany. Michael Kirby, the founder of Murals of Baltimore, is considered to be one, if not the top Italian Street painter in the world. The majority of the art work created by Michael for streets and pavement uses a concept known as one point perspective. With over 16 years creating and developing this art form, Mr. Kirby and the artists at Murals of Baltimore are leaders and originators of the 3D look. 3D Italian Street Painting Taylor Memorial Park Near American Legion Memorial Stage Most notably, Murals of Baltimore has won various competitions and been featured in numerous festivals and galleries across the world. FIREWORKS PUBLIC DISPLAY SAFETY TIPS The fire department is usually responsible for the public's safety when a large scale Fireworks display is presented. The actual firing of the display is conducted by a trained pyrotechnic operator and crew. These professionals know and comply with all state and local regulations. Spectators should obey all ushers or monitors and respect the safety barriers set up to allow the trained operator room to safely do his job. Resist any temptation to get close to the actual firing site. Although it rarely happens, it is possible that a firework component might fall to the ground without exploding. The public should be cautioned not to touch these fireworks. If they happen to find any which have not exploded, they should immediately contact the local fire or police departments. Pets have very sensitive ears and the booms and bangs associated with a fireworks display can be quite uncomfortable, particularly to dogs. In fact, the noise can actually hurt their ears. Leave pets at home if you are going to the fireworks show. Leave the lighting of all fireworks to the trained operator when you attend a public display. Sparklers, fountains and other items that many states allow for use by individuals are not appropriate to use when a large crowd is present. Leave your own fireworks at home - the display will provide plenty of excitement. ELK CO. Dominique, a life-time resident of Brockway, is a well known friendly face and busy volunteer/leader in our community. Among many other accolades, she is a huge Brockway fan. Most notably, Murals of Baltimore has won various competitions and been featured in numerous festivals and galleries across the world. They have worked in over 200 cities including Rome, Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Francisco, Caracas and Cartagena for such clients as the Smithsonian Institute, Honda, McDonalds and Carnival Cruise Ships. They have also been featured on the David Letterman Show, Ace of Cakes, BBC, Good Morning America, Il Tempo, Venezia Gazatte, Informador, and others. In addition to his many accolades, Michael Kirby is the first American artist to become a Master in all the major street painting festivals in Europe as well as having the title of Maesto Madonnaro and Meister Strassenmaler. 24 3D Italian Street Painting Taylor Memorial Park Near American Legion Memorial Stage Tuesday, July 1, 2014 Wednesday, July 2, 2014 Thursday, July 3, 2014 Friday, July 4, 2014 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM Proudly Sponsored By: Hugh Water Services Holt Drilling Dominique is a 2014 graduate of Brockway Area High School where she kept herself busy with cheerleading, varsity club, National Honor Society, theater and duel enrollment. At the age of six she began her acrobatic training, and the following year she was chosen to attend The Chinese National Circus School in the capitol city of Beijing. While in Beijing, she trained for eight hours a day until she was 16. In 1984, her artistic cycling act won a gold medal at the prestigious Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in Paris, France. She often teamed with her sister Liu Ying to create duo acts that were created by her coach and father Liu Gui Ting. In 1995, they were selected to perform their duo hand balancing -act at The Wu Qiao International Circus Festival where they were awarded “The Golden Lion” prize. For many years, Ms. Liu traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa and Asia with The Liaoning Acrobatic Arts Troupe. She performed with Zirkus Knie in Switzerland, Circus Krone in Germany and with countless other touring shows in Italy, Holland, France, South Africa, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia. Monsignor was also a member of the Executive Committee, rarely missing a meeting on the fourth Monday of every month. 682 Main Street Brockway, PA 15824 1301 Main St. Brockway, PA 15824 814-265-0949 814-265-0846 Priority First Federal Credit Union Fox’s Pizza Den We Provide Our Members Efficient, Convenient, and Quality Services with Personal Attention at Competitive Rates. 957 Fifth Ave Brockway, PA 15824 814-265-8889 Brockway-Brookville-DuBois-Punxsutawney Monsignor, we thank you for your many years of hard work, dedication and service to this Committee. We thank you for counting us among your friends and family and for making Brockway a better place to live and visit. We thank you for keeping us on the right track. We hope to continue with your enthusiasm as we plan future celebrations. Thank you. The Fireworks opening this year is in memory of Msg. George J. Adams Serving Clearfield and Jefferson Counties www.priorityfirstfcu.org 34 3 IN MEMORY MONSIGNOR GEORGE J. ADAMS This year’s Fourth of July booklet is dedicated to the memory of Monsignor George J. 2 Clearfield-Jefferson Drug Free Communities Coalition Hepler’s Beer Barrel 1538 Main Street Brockway, PA 15824 814-265-2337 135 Midway Dr., Suite A DuBois, PA 15801 814-371-9002 Courier-Express & Tri-County Sunday Paesano Pizza 524 Main Street Brockway, PA 15824 814-265-4285 Pizza - Pasta - Hoagies 500 Jeffers St. DuBois, PA 15801 814-371-4200 ext. 2110 3 Sigma Starr’s Trailer Sales Clay Plant Road P.O. Lundberg, Jr., DMD Smith’s Tastee Freez Starr’s Trailer Sales Tim Britton Construction Services, Inc. Why buy products packaged in glass?
