This will be the third time Hampton and Winthrop have met in Rock Hill, S.C., and Winthrop has won each of the last two meetings. PIRATES AGAINST THE BIG SOUTH Hampton is 14-11 against teams currently in the Big South. The Pirates are 0-1 against Campbell; 1-0 against Charleston Southern; 1-1 against Coastal Carolina; 2-0 against High Point; 2-3 against Liberty; 3-1 against Longwood; 3-3 against Radford; and 2-2 against Winthrop. Hampton has never faced Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, or UNC Asheville. PIRATES ON THE ROAD The Pirates were 5-11 on the road last season, despite winning two out of their last three true road contests. In 2014-15, Hampton was 1-7 in true road contests in non-conference play, with that win coming on Dec. 2 of last season at Tennessee State. During Edward Joyner Jr.’s tenure as head coach the Pirates are 35-53 on the road. SCOUTING THE EAGLES Winthrop is entering its fourth season under head coach Pat Kelsey, and the Eagles are coming off a 2014-15 campaign that saw them win 19 games and advance all the way to the championship game of the Big South Tournament. Winthrop was picked to finish third in the Big South this season, and junior guard Keon Johnson, the team’s top returning scorer (11.5 ppg in 2014-15) was a Preseason First Team All-Big South selection. Sophomore wing player Xavier Cooks, the team’s top returning rebounder (6.1 rpg in 2014-15) was a Preseason Second Team selection. Quinton Chievous led the Pirates with 22 points and 10 rebounds, notching his third double-double over the last four games of the season. PIRATES PICKED TO FINISH SECOND The Pirates, coming off of last season’s MEAC Tournament championship, were picked to finish second in the MEAC this season, picking up nine first-place votes in the preseason poll voted on by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors. Defending MEAC champion North Carolina Central was picked to repeat as conference champions. The Eagles won the MEAC regular season title in 2014-15, while Hampton wound up sixth in the standings with an 8-8 mark in league play. JOYNER CLOSING IN ON 100 Entering his seventh season at the helm, Edward Joyner Jr. is one win shy of 100 for his career, sitting at 99-96 as a head coach. The Pirates won 17 games under Joyner last season, and in his six seasons in charge, Hampton has made three postseason appearances – including two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2015. Joyner is already Hampton’s all-time winningest Div. I coach, having surpasses Steve Merfield last season. PLENTY OF FAMILIAR FACES The Pirates come into 2015-16 off of their fifth-ever MEAC Tournament championship, and many of the players who helped Hampton make that run last season are back for more. There are 10 returners in total for the Pirates this season, led by Preseason All-MEAC honorees Quinton Chievous (First Team), Brian Darden (Second Team), and Jervon Pressley (Third Team) – as well as Dwight Meikle, who led the Pirates in both scoring and rebounding in 2014-15. Reginald Johnson, who was named to the MEAC’s All-Tournament Team last season, also returns, as does post player Charles Wilson-Fisher – who contributed big minutes during the MEAC Tournament. CHIEVOUS MAKING HIS PRESENCE FELT Quinton Chievous, the Tennessee transfer, made his presence felt for the Pirates last season, especially once the MEAC Tournament started. Chievous had three double-doubles in the last four games of the year, including both NCAA Tournament games. Before that, though, he turned in a bull-in-a-china-shop-esque 23-point, 12-rebound effort in the MEAC Tournament semifinals against Norfolk State. Chievous, who was second in rebounding and third in scoring on the team in 2014-15, was named Preseason First Team All-MEAC heading into the 2015-16 campaign. JOHNSON LIT IT UP Reginald Johnson, a transfer from Miami (Ohio), was second on the team in scoring last season – despite not playing his first game until Dec. 17 at Illinois. He averaged almost 12 points a game last season, scoring in double figures 14 times in 26 games. His career high of 27 points came at NJIT last season, and Johnson added 21 points in the next game against UMES. Johnson dropped 20 points in the MEAC Tournament championship game against Delaware State, earning MEAC All-Tournament Team honors, and also had 15 points in Hampton’s win over Manhattan in the NCAA Tournament’s First Four. MEIKLE GETTING HIS CHANCE Dwight Meikle led the Pirates in both scoring and rebounding last season, despite missing almost all of the MEAC Tournament and both NCAA Tournament games due to an ankle injury. He was fifth in the MEAC in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and field goal percentage (.519), and Meikle was also sixth in blocks (1.5 bpg) and 10th in offensive rebounds. Meikle had 17 double-digit scoring efforts in 2014-15, in- -/- TEAM COMPARISON Hampton Winthrop 17-18 Record 19-13 .406 Field Goal Percentage.449 .413 Opp. Field Goal Percentage.408 .304 3 Pt. Meikle poured in a career-high 28 points against Northern Arizona last season, and he shot a career-best 11-for-19 against North Carolina Central for 26 points. His career high in rebounds (19) came at USC Upstate last season. DARDEN LOOKING FOR MORE Brian Darden was fifth on the team in scoring last season, just shy of averaging 10 points a contest (9.8). On top of being second in the MEAC in free throw percentage (.845), Darden was ninth in the conference in 3-pointers per game. The MEAC Tournament’s top 3-point shooter had a career-high 23 points at Morgan State back on Feb. 16, going 6-for-7 from behind the arc, and he had 20 points in the championship game of the MEAC Tournament against Delaware State. Darden comes into 2015-16 as a Preseason Second Team All-MEAC selection. PRESSLEY CRASHING THE GLASS Jervon Pressley was third on the team in rebounding last season, averaging 4.8 boards per contest. He was also seventh in the MEAC in blocks (1.4 bpg). He also averaged 6.1 points per game, scoring in double figures four times. Against Manhattan in the NCAA Tournament’s First Four, Pressley provided valuable minutes in pouring in eight points and grabbing four rebounds. His size and presence inside is one reason Pressley was a Preseason Third Team All-MEAC selection. DTP: DISCIPLINE, TOUGHNESS, PASSION Team 11-1212-1313-1414-15 Total Head coach Edward Joyner Jr. and associate head coach Akeem Miskdeen developed a new identity NSU 13-316-011-512-4 70-26 and philosophy for the Pirates prior to the start of last season: DTP – trying to instill discipline, MSU 6-1010-611-55-11 57-39 toughness, and passion into a young and talented team that had showed flashes of promise in HAM 6-10 11-5 13-3 8-8 57-39 NCCU10-615-115-116-0 56-82012-13. BCU 11-57-95-117-9 50-45 DSU 12-48-85-119-7 50-46 Going forward, the Pirates’ coaching staff looks to use DTP in order to get the team to play the CSU 9-75-117-96-1041-55simple game of a basketball aggressively, while simultaneously reaching their full potential on and NCAT 7-9 8-8 5-11 6-10 41-55 off the court and never losing sight of their goals. I Tournament, it also marks the program’s second win in the event, thanks to a 74-64 first-round win over Manhattan in the First Four. Prior to 2011, the Pirates were last in the NCAA Tournament in 2006, when the Pirates fell 71-49 to Monmouth in the opening-round game in Dayton, Ohio. Hampton’s most famous trip to the NCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball Tournament is also its first; in 2001, the MEAC champion Pirates, coached by Steve Merfeld, upended No. 2 seed Iowa State 58-57 in Boise, Idaho on a 4-footer from Tarvis Williams with 6.9 seconds left to play. Williams led the Pirates (25-6) with 16 points and 13 rebounds that afternoon, while Marseilles Brown added 14 points and LaSean Howard poured in 10 points. Williams’ bucket not only gave Hampton a win for the ages – and marked just the fourth time in tournament history a No. 15 seed had defeated a No. 2 seed – but it also provided one of the tournament’s most vivid images: Merfeld, lifted into the air by David Johnson, fists and feet raised into the air. The Pirates would fall in the second round that year to Georgetown 76-57. Hampton also made the NCAA Tournament in 2002, falling 78-67 as a No. 15 seed to No. 2 Connecticut in the first round of the East Regional. WINTHROP HEAD COACH PAT KELSEY Pat Kelsey recently finished his third year as head coach of the Eagle program after being hired on March 29, 2012. In just three seasons, Kelsey has resurrected the proud basketball tradition at Winthrop. After taking over a program that had won 12 and 13 games respectively the prior two seasons, Kelsey and the Eagles won 20 and 19 games in back-to-back seasons which was the highest two-year win total since the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Kelsey’s 53 wins rank second behind only current Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall for most victories the first three seasons in the program’s Div. I history. In 2015, for the second consecutive season, Kelsey and the Eagles advanced to the nationally televised Big South conference championship game. 2015-16 Hampton University Men’s Basketball Game Notes Saturday, November 14, 2015 • Winthrop • Winthrop Coliseum • Rock Hill, S.C. -- - 2014-15 MEAC Individual Scoring Leaders Points Per Game #Player 1. Kelsey was thrilled and honored when he was hired by Winthrop to lead the men’s basketball program. “Winthrop has a powerful name with its history in the NCAA tournament and the successful program it has built. I am looking forward to continuing the winning tradition and injecting new energy into the respected Winthrop basketball brand.” Kelsey prides his teams on grit and toughness on the defensive end and an exciting “downhill” style of basketball offensively. The last two seasons have produced two of the most prolific offensive units in the history of the tradition-rich program. During the 2013-2014 season, Winthrop increased its points per game from 60 to 74.4 and also ranked as one of the nation’s top 25 threepoint shooting teams. For the first time in school history, Winthrop had three different players make 50 three-point shots in a season and the team made 10 three-point shots in a game a schoolrecord 11 times. The previous five seasons combined, Winthrop made ten three-point shots on only four total occasions. The 2014-2015 Eagles proved to be an even more dynamic offensive unit, shattering several records. Winthrop achieved its highest national rank in school history in scoring (36th overall) and offensive pace (65.9 possessions per game). Winthrop was also among the nation’s leaders in three-point field goals made (251) and three-point field goals per game (7.8). The Eagles ranked in the top three in the Big South conference in scoring offense, field goal percentage, three point field goal percentage, scoring margin and turnover margin. Defensively, the 2014-2015 Eagles were the #1 ranked defensive team in the Big South in defensive efficiency (kenpom.com), field goal percentage defense and three point field goal percentage defense. In fact Winthrop ranked in the top two in 5-of-9 defensive categories in Big South Conference play. Freshmen Xavier Cooks and Duby Okeke BOTH shattered the freshman record for blocks in a season with 47 and 46 respectively. Cooks turned in the third most blocks in a single-season at Winthrop while Okeke finished with the fourth most. Senior Keon Moore was named first team all-conference and became the first player in school history to score 1,000 points in just two seasons. Moore was also among the nation’s leaders in three-point shooting percentage and three-point field goals made. Senior Andre Smith became only the second player in school history with 1,000 points, 300 assists and 200 made threes. Cooks was named to the Big South Conference All-Freshmen team and broke the freshman record for rebounding and blocks. Cooks finished second in the conference in blocks and was only the second freshman in school history to lead the team in rebounding. Prior to his arrival at Winthrop, Kelsey was the associate head coach at his alma mater Xavier University, where he spent two seasons. THE BOOK ON HAMPTON – 2015-16 SEASON OUTLOOK The 2014-15 season culminated in an unlikely and magical ride for the Hampton University men’s basketball program, as the Pirates rebounded from going 8-8 in conference play to win the MEAC Tournament championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. Hampton won four games in six days in Norfolk, Va., claiming its fifth conference tournament title before heading to Dayton, Ohio to take on Manhattan in the First Four. A 10-point win allowed the Pirates to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament – where top seed Kentucky and 48 hours’ worth of national exposure and media attention awaited. And while the Pirates lost that game, Hampton’s run through March embodied everything special about college basketball. “We were mentally and physically prepared for the tournament (last year),” Joyner said. “This team has had regular-season success the past couple years, but we always got bounced early from the tournament. (Last year), we were focused on the tournament. Not saying the regular season doesn’t matter, because it does, but this showed our guys that come March, your goals are still within reach.” Coming into the 2015-16 campaign, the Pirates return most of last year’s squad. That returning core – sprinkled in with a handful of newcomers – should have the Pirates again making noise throughout conference play and be one of the teams come March that might once again cut down the nets in Norfolk Scope. RETURNERS Leading the cadre of returning players will be senior wing Dwight Meikle, who led the team in both scoring (13.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg) last season. Meikle injured his ankle in the first round 2015-16 Hampton University Men’s Basketball Game Notes Saturday, November 14, 2015 • Winthrop • Winthrop Coliseum • Rock Hill, S.C. of the MEAC Tournament, and thus missed the rest of the season, but his athleticism and scoring ability will be back for the Pirates in the coming season. Meikle had 17 double-digit scoring efforts last season – including four 20-point games – and he had four double-doubles. He poured in a career-high 28 points against Northern Arizona last season, before grabbing a career-best 19 rebounds at USC Upstate. “Losing Dwight didn’t help us, that’s for sure,” Joyner said. “But I think it made the rest of the guys focus more, pay closer attention to detail, move the ball more, play more together, that sort of thing.” Quinton Chievous also returns for the Pirates, coming off a 2014-15 campaign that saw him average almost 11 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. Chievous was a bull in a china shop against Norfolk State in the MEAC Tournament semifinals, with 23 points and 16 rebounds, before recording double-doubles in both of Hampton’s NCAA Tournament games. Reginald Johnson, who like Chievous played his first season at Hampton last year, was a big contributor to the Pirates’ late-season success. Johnson was named to the MEAC’s All-Tournament Team after dropping 20 points in the title game against Delaware State, and his 15 points against Manhattan were big reason why the Pirates won their first NCAA Tournament game since 2001. Johnson was second on the team in scoring last season, averaging 11.9 points per game. “Those guys stepped up when it mattered most,” Joyner said. “They played the way they’re capable of playing, and when they do that, we become a very tough team to deal with.” Brian Darden was 0.2 points per game shy of being the fifth Pirate to average in double figures last season, and he was named the top 3-point shooter of the MEAC Tournament. Darden scored in double figures in all four of Hampton’s MEAC Tournament games, including 20 points in the championship game, before adding 13 points in the win over Manhattan. Ke’Ron Brown, Lawrence Cooks, and Breon Key are other returning backcourt players who look to see more time in 2015-16. Brown is the Pirates’ defensive specialist at guard, while Key has seen time as a backup point guard in Joyner’s system. Jervon Pressley was third on the team in rebounding last season with just under five per game. He had three double-digit rebound games in 2014-15, including a pair of 11-rebound contests: against Morgan State and at Norfolk State. Pressley also gave the Pirates a presence inside as they made their run through the MEAC and NCAA Tournaments. Charles Wilson-Fisher also gave the Pirates valuable minutes down low as the calendar crept further and further into March. After dropping 10 points in the MEAC Tournament opener against Morgan State, Wilson-Fisher added 10 rebounds in the quarterfinals against Maryland Eastern Shore and grabbed seven boards in the title game. NEWCOMERS Four true freshmen will make up this year’s roster: two in the frontcourt and two in the backcourt. Branden Aughburns, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward from Queens, N.Y., will help fortify the Pirates’ frontcourt this season, as will 6-foot-9, 210-pound Trevond Barnes from LaFayette, Ala. Akim Mitchell will give the Pirates some backcourt size at 6-foot5, coming from Charlotte, N.C., while Kalin Fisher, who hails from Chicago, Ill., could also see time with the guards. Among the redshirt freshmen who could contribute are Rasheed Stanley, David Rancie, and Devon Oakley. “If you look at us last season, a lot of guys got a lot of minutes throughout the year,” Joyner said. “Having that depth in important to us, the ability to have guys to put out there on the floor who can do whatever they need to do to help us win.” SCHEDULE The Pirates will have just two non-conference home games this season – Appalachian State on Nov. 20 and Princeton on Jan. 3 – and their pre-MEAC portion of the season will also include competing in the 2015 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic with a field that includes SMU, Colorado, Nicholls State, Canisius, and Louisiana Monroe. “This is a difficult schedule,” Joyner said. “Probably the most difficult non-conference schedule we’ve had. It’s a by-product of success; the more you win at this level, the more difficult it becomes to schedule teams.” Hampton’s MEAC slate includes home games against BethuneCookman, Florida A&M, Savannah State, South Carolina State, Norfolk State, Morgan State, Howard, and Delaware State. Hampton will take on North Carolina A&T on the road for the first time since the 2010-11 season. The 2016 MEAC Basketball Championships will be held March 7-12 at Norfolk Scope Arena. 2015-16 Hampton University Men’s Basketball Game Notes Saturday, November 14, 2015 • Winthrop • Winthrop Coliseum • Rock Hill, S.C. -- - -/- Hampton Men’s Basketball 20-Win Seasons Season Record Coach 1977-78^...............................................24-7........................Hank Ford 1978-79^...............................................24-6........................Hank Ford 1979-80^............................................. 21-10.......................Hank Ford 1981-82^...............................................28-8........................Hank Ford 1982-83^...............................................23-7........................Hank Ford 1990-91^...............................................21-8................... In his first six seasons as head men’s basketball coach at Hampton University, Edward “Buck” Joyner Jr. has guided the Pirates to national prominence on more than one occasion – and that’s not even counting the magical run Hampton made last March en route to an improbable MEAC championship, an NCAA Tournament win, and national notoriety. Despite going 8-8 in MEAC play last season and winding up with a No. 6 seed, the Pirates went on to win four games in six days in the conference tournament, taking their second MEAC Tournament crown under Joyner with an 82-61 win over Delaware State in the title game. In claiming the MEAC crown, the Pirates upset the No. 3, No. 2, and No. 5 seeds. The Pirates then wound up in the NCAA First Four in Dayton, Ohio to take on Manhattan. Hampton won that game 74-64 for the second NCAA Tournament win for the program at the Div. I level – and the first since the 2001 upset over Iowa State – before taking on No. 1 seed Kentucky in the second round. The win gave the Pirates an unprecedented level of national exposure – exposure helped by a press conference soundbite from Joyner that went viral and made Hampton tournament darlings leading up to its second-round contest against Kentucky. Hampton made its third postseason appearance under Joyner; in addition to NCAA appearances this past season and in 2011, the Pirates competed in the College Basketball Insider (CBI) Tournament in 2014. Joyner became the program’s all-time winningest Div. I coach on Feb. 7 of last season with a 64-61 win over Maryland Eastern Shore, surpassing Steve Merfeld (90 wins) on the program’s all-time wins list. After this past season, Joyner is one win away from becoming just the third coach in program history to reach the 100-win mark. Along the way, Deron Powers was named the MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player – after earning Third Team All-MEAC honors – and Reginald Johnson was named to the All-Tournament Team. In six seasons at the helm, Joyner is 99-96. With the help of associate head coach Akeem Miskdeen, Joyner instilled a new philosophy leading into the 2013-14 season. Faced with a young but talented team, Joyner is looking to instill a philosophy of discipline, toughness, and passion (DTP) in the Pirates. In discipline – getting players to do things the right way every time on and off the court – Joyner quotes Aristotle: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not just an act; it’s a habit.” Nothing great, according to Joyner, is ever accomplished without discipline. By giving the Pirates toughness, Joyner and his staff hope they will be able to withstand great strain without tearing or breaking. The Pirates will have to be tough, fighting through adversity – physical, mental, and emotional – on and off the court. By instilling passion, Joyner and his staff want the Pirates to embrace being student-athletes, in every sense of the term. If the players truly love what they do, that passion will make being disciplined and tough easier. Through DTP, Joyner wants a team that plays hard, unselfishly, with confidence, and with passion – believing that builds the foundation of a successful basketball program. The Pirates, through DTP, should take the simple game of basketball and play it aggressively, while simultaneously reaching their full potential on and off the court and never losing sight of their goals. Joyner also hopes DTP will be a good tool for teaching important life lessons. The Pirates won 18 games in 2013-14, finishing second in the MEAC with a mark of 13-3. Despite falling in the quarterfinals to Coppin State, Hampton made its second postseason appearance under Joyner, competing at Penn State in the first round of the CBI Tournament. The Pirates ended the regular season on a seven-game winning streak, a stretch that included season sweeps over rivals Howard and Norfolk State. As a head coach, Joyner is 9-1 overall against Howard and 6-6 against Norfolk State. Along the way, senior forward Du’Vaughn Maxwell was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, leading the con- 2015-16 Hampton University Men’s Basketball Game Notes Saturday, November 14, 2015 • Winthrop • Winthrop Coliseum • Rock Hill, S.C. -- - ference with 3.2 blocked shots per contest and ranking third in the MEAC in rebounding with 7.5 a game. Maxwell was also a First Team All-MEAC selection. In Joyner’s fourth season with the Pirates, Hampton went 14-17 overall in 2012-13. However, the Pirates went 11-5 in conference play, finishing third in the MEAC after winning a head-to-head tiebreaker over Savannah State. Hampton closed out the regular season with nine wins in its last 12 games, as a young squad began to mesh and show its potential. Leading that charge was freshman point guard Deron Powers, who was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year after leading the Pirates in both scoring and assists last season. Powers was second in the MEAC in free throw percentage and fourth in assists. Powers was also named a Mid-Major Freshman All-American by CollegeInsider.com. The Pirates struggled to a 12-21 record in 2011-12, though Hampton did advance to the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament in trying to defend their 2010-11 crown. Along the way, the Pirates upset No. 1 seed Savannah State in the quarterfinal round 59-46. That win was also the 50th in Joyner’s young coaching career. Darrion Pellum, who was a senior in 2011-12, led the team and the MEAC in scoring, earning First Team All-MEAC honors after averaging 18.3 points per game. Pellum was also named VaSID First Team All-State. Joyner led the Pirates to the 2011 MEAC Tournament championship in his second season, guiding Hampton to a 24-9 record – marking the first time the Pirates won 20 games since the 2001-02 season. The Pirates were the No. 2 seed in the MEAC Tournament, defeating Morgan State 60-55 in the championship game to win the tournament and win the automatic NCAA bid for the first time since 2006. Hampton earned a No. 16 seed, facing top-seeded Duke in the first round. Joyner saw two of his athletes earn All-MEAC honors, as Pellum was named First Team All-MEAC after finishing the season second in the conference in scoring and junior guard Kwame Morgan was named Second Team All-MEAC after a breakout season. Pellum, the MEAC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, was also named VaSID Second Team All-State, BASN HBCU Second Team All-American and NABC All-District 15, while Morgan was named a Lou Henson AllAmerican and NABC All-District 15. Joyner was also named BASN HBCU Coach of the Year for his efforts. The Pirates overcame offseason tragedy and went 14-18 in 2009-10, Joyner’s first season as head coach, finishing tied for fifth in the MEAC with an 8-8 record. He led the Pirates -/- to the MEAC Tournament semifinals, beating archrival Norfolk State in the quarterfinals 73-70. Despite struggling to find consistency for much of the season, Hampton won six straight games to close out the regular season and open the MEAC Tournament, before falling to top seed Morgan State 74-67 in the semifinals. Senior guard Vincent Simpson earned Second Team AllMEAC honors for the second straight year under Joyner, leading the team with 14.1 points per game. Both Simpson and senior forward Michael Freeman eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark in 2009-10. As an assistant coach, he helped develop such players as Simpson, first team all-conference guard Rashad West, the MEAC’s leading scorer in 2006, and Michael Freeman, the 2006 MEAC Rookie of the Year. As academic coordinator, Joyner guided the men’s basketball program to the highest team GPA in 10 years. Joyner came to Hampton after 11 years as the assistant head coach at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. He also served as the lead assistant coach on the women’s basketball team in the last five years of his tenure at Johnson C. Smith. Joyner also served as assistant to the Dean of Students over judiciary affairs. During his tenure with the men’s basketball program at Johnson C. Smith, Joyner was instrumental in developing 13 first team all-conference performers and seven AllAmericans – five of whom are currently playing professional basketball. The Golden Bulls made seven appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, reaching the Elite Eight in 2001 after capturing the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship. Joyner helped the Johnson C. Smith women reach the CIAA title game in three of his five seasons, making one NCAA Tournament appearance. In all, Joyner coaches six all-conference players. Joyner played his collegiate ball at Johnson C. Smith, earning letters all four seasons he played. He helped guide the Golden Bulls to three division titles, two trips to the CIAA championship game and three appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Joyner was named Defensive Player of the Year twice, and he finished his career among the top-ten assist leaders in Johnson C. Smith history. A native of Winston-Salem N.C., Joyner is the son of Edward Joyner Sr., former head basketball coach at St. Paul’s College, and the nephew of Steve Joyner, the head basketball coach and athletic director at Johnson C. Smith. He is married to the former Aerian Miller and they have three children: E.J., Andrew, and Layla. 2015-16 Hampton University Men’s Basketball Game Notes Saturday, November 14, 2015 • Winthrop • Winthrop Coliseum • Rock Hill, S.C.
