From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents/Guardians of Anthony Ravens,
Happy New Year! We are seeing time speed past as we celebrate the many accomplishments and achievements of our Anthony Middle School family. We continue to see our
students RISE on campus and in our community. Before the holidays, several of our
clubs and organizations sponsored ways to help others. Through the generosity of our
students, staff, and larger community, the holidays were brighter for several families.
Our students and staff continue to contribute to the community as they sign up for our
Superintendent’s Fun Run team to benefit the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. Our
Raven team continues to grow. Besides helping others, we have students who have
demonstrated academic and extracurricular personal success during the first semester
of school. We are truly proud of all accomplishments in our Raven community.
As we enter the spring semester, we are focused on academic success for all students.
We encourage all students to set academic goals for themselves for self-improvement.
Whatever the level of academic success your child has achieved to date, please take
some time to sit down with them and set academic goals for the spring semester. We
use the term SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-oriented, and Timebound) goals with the students. It is best to have a long-term goal for the semester and
smaller goals for the shorter segments to work with by either three-week or six-week
increments when setting goals. Goals, by nature, need to be challenging; however, they
also need to be within reach. Please work with us as we help your child focus on their
personal level of success.
As usual, the spring semester at Anthony Middle School will be filled with opportunities for you to be involved with your child. Please check the campus calendar for performances, games, celebrations, and meetings. We welcome you as a partner with us in
your child’s education. We appreciate your support and your willingness to make sure
our students have a vast array of opportunities. Without our wonderful volunteers
who assist our campus in many endeavors, we would not be able to offer as wide a
variety of events for your child to enjoy. We appreciate those who are already volunteering and encourage you to join our VIPS program.
As we look toward a promising 2016, we are glad to serve this special community of
learners and anticipate success as our students demonstrate their talents in various
ways. We are excited to see what lies ahead, and we welcome you to join the adventure
with us.

Welcome Back. We are excited to start a new semester here at Anthony Middle School! We are
amazed at how well our new and old Raven students are doing, you should be very proud our
your students. We would like to share some important information with you.
Extracurricular Events/Student Games
Please encourage your student to engage in appropriate RISE behavior at all extracurricular
events. RISE behaviors include staying seated, watching the event in a respectful manner, following dress code, throwing trash away, making sure their ride is on time. Students who display
difficulties with these expectations and will lose the privilege of participation.
Dress Code
Student dress code guidelines are being enforced at Anthony. In general, clothing should not
distract from the educational environment. Clothing and accessories should not be baggy, revealing, torn, tight, offensive, or distracting in nature. Please contact your AP with specific questions.

Cell Phones
Please do not utilize your student’s cell phone to contact them directly during the instructional
day. Please contact the front desk at 281-373-5660 to give your child a message. Your child
should not use their cell phone to contact you without permission from the Anthony Staff during
the instructional day. We have school phones readily available for you child should the need
arise. Students are to have their phones powered off and out of sight unless the teacher approves it for instructional purposes.
Students who violate the cell phone policy during the instructional day will have their phones
confiscated and returned to their guardian after a $15 fee is collected. Please be sure to bring a
bill that proves your ownership of the phone. Students who refuse to give their phone to a staff
member will face further disciplinary action.
Tardies
Please encourage your students to utilize their time wisely in between classes. Students are
expected to be in class ready to learn before the tardy bell sounds. Here is a list of consequences
we have in place for students that do not make it to class in time.

A student who needs to leave school early must bring a signed note from his or her parent /legal
guardian specifying the reason for the release, the time, and the person picking up the student.

is on file with the district.

As winter approaches, overall school health is possible with adherence to CFISD Illness Policies.
Higher incidences of strep throat, respiratory, and gastrointestinal illnesses occur during winter
months. Please note that children who have a fever or who need to take antibiotics for infections
such as strep throat, conjunctivitis, ear infections, etc., should stay home until they have taken
the prescribed medicine for at least 24 hours, their temperature is less than 100.0 (without fever
reducing medicine), and they feel better. Some children and some illnesses take more time to
recover from than others. When children return to their normal sleeping and eating habits they
are usually well enough to return to school. Please note that your child should come to school
feeling well enough to participate fully in all school program activities including going outside in
the winter. Except for approved inhalers with a signed school form from the parent/guardian
and physician, please remember that students are not allowed to transport medications to and
from campus.

All students entering 7th grade for the 2016-2017 school year must be in compliance with the
new state immunization law. This new law requires students entering 7th grade to provide proof

The holiday break is a great opportunity to make arrangements to receive these immunizations. I
encourage you to submit the updated immunization record to the clinic as soon as possible (this
school year)! Doctor offices and clinics run out of vaccines during the summer and at the beginning of school. Vaccines can also become backordered. Your prompt attention to this matter now
will allow your child to receive their schedule at Raven Express and start school on the first day in
August next. year. If your student has already received these immunizations, please make sure
that the nurse has them on file.

Letter From The Director of Instruction
Happy New Year! We are excited and ready for all the fun of the second semester.
Our goal at Anthony Middle school is that all students show progress and growth as a
result of the specially designed instruction to which they are exposed. Throughout
the day, students are receiving lessons that are differentiated to meet their varying
learning styles and levels of readiness We hope that as a result of the varied instruction provided here, students will begin thinking and producing work at increased levels of cognition.
All of their hard work and effort has certainly paid off so far. On Friday morning, January 8th, we will host an honor roll celebration for approximately 600 of our students
who have earned honor roll or distinguished honor roll for the first, second, and third
six weeks. Way to go, Ravens! During this celebration, our honor students will enjoy
donuts and juice before receiving their certificate for achieving such success during
the first semester. I look forward to seeing our students remain focused and motivated so that they may participate in the Awards Night Ceremony in May.
One way you can help your child find success in middle school is to monitor his or her
grades through the Home Access Center online. Grades should be posted by teachers
on a weekly basis. Please contact the school if you do not have your username and
password for the Home Access Center. Also, communicate constantly with both your
child and his or her teachers. Our teachers are happy to speak with you about your
student’s progress so that you and your child can plan for success.
I hope that the middle school experience for your student is not only educational and

Book Clubs and Literary Essays. During the
4th six weeks, we will be learning about
Literary Nonfiction and Expository texts.
Our 4th reading checkpoint will be January
19th and our Benchmark the week of February 8-12. In writing, we will start 2016
writing personal narratives and will move
into writing to a prompt. Please continue
to look at your students grades online!
Math
Students will be covering proportional
reasoning and statistics. This includes ratios, rates, proportions, percent and
more! A student’s ability to recognize
equivalent fractions, reduce fractions to
lowest terms and knowing their fraction
decimal benchmarks will greatly help their
ability to be successful during these unit. A
great way to help your child is to review
their multiplication facts and fraction
benchmarks weekly. Please keep checking
planners and teacher websites to ensure
that students are staying on top of homework and upcoming tests/due dates.
PE
The physical education department will
continue their lessons teaching fitness to
all grades which includes activities and
cardiovascular work that improves coordination, flexibility and strength. Students will be introduced to various
sports such as races, soccer, volleyball,
basketball and other activities that promote a physical well-being. Students
who are enrolled in PE will also be given
a TEKS test twice during the 6 weeks
that will test each students overall fitness and in return will help in setting
goals and aid to motivation for the future.
Science
During the fourth six weeks sixth grade
science will be covering various force and
motion concepts. Here is what to look
forward to this six weeks:

We will beginning Minerals during the last
week of the six weeks.

World Cultures
During the 4th Grading period, World Cultures will begin exploring Southwest Asia
and Africa. We will be examining the impact of geography on economy, such as
the influence of oil in the Middle East.
Transportation corridors and other examples of Human Environment Interaction
will be explored in further detail. Discussion will also look into culture conflicts and
their impact on current events. This term
is full of interesting and engaging topics!
Choir
The sixth grade mixed choir will be focusing on music theory basics and sight singing techniques early in the grading period
before beginning their Pop Show music in
February.
Art
Students will be covering illustration,
graphic design and sculpture.
Rotation
Art will be covering light and shadow, still
life, illustration and water color techniques.
Choir will continue singing warm-ups and
the solfege scale as well as begin learning
about note and rest values in music. During this time we use our math skills as well
to add and subtract beats.

Diction and Theatre Jobs

What a wonderful 2015-2016 school year it
has been in Language Arts thus far! During
the fourth six weeks, students will be studying both reading and writing. Students will
be analyzing poetry to decipher the mood
and how the poet created it using sensory
details and graphical elements. Students
will be reading non-fiction text while focusing on the connection across different
texts. Within fiction, students will be looking for and analyzing character motivations, point of view, and imagery. Students
will be writing both an expository paper
and a personal narrative. The focus of the
expository unit will be the development of
ideas and examples, while the narrative
unit will include mini-lessons on participial
phrases, transitions, and conjunctive adverbs. To help your children become the
best readers and writers they can be,
please encourage them to read at home for
at least twenty minutes a day!
Texas History
We will be learning about the significant
individuals, events, and issues that helped
build the Republic of Texas. As well as the
process of annexation and the issues Texas
faced in early Statehood. Please check your
student’s planner for important dates!

8th Grade
Algebra
During the 4th six weeks we will be covering quadratic functions and polynomial operations. This includes the domain
and range of quadratic functions,
writing equations of quadratic functions, graphing quadratic functions, and
determining the effects on the graph of
the parent function; polynomial operations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing polynomials of degree one and degree two, writing equivalent polynomial expressions, and factoring trinomials. Please keep checking

Math– On Level
During the 4th six weeks we will be covering measurement. This includes the
Pythagorean Theorem; volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres; and surface

US History
Student will be learning about the constitution, bill of rights, the first 7 presidents and how they tackled the new
nation. Fun learning is taking place
where students get exposed to
knowledge through gallery walks, music,
videos, projects, interactive lessons in
the LGI and so much more!!
Language Arts
In the 4th grading period, 8th grade ELAR
students will begin a unit called
“Analysis of Literary Elements”.

Science
As we start this new semester in 8th
grade Science we will be exploring and
evaluating the physics behind balanced
and unbalanced forces that can result in
the movement of an object. We will
also classify movement into categories
based on Newton’s Laws of motion and
find other applications of his laws. We
will then continue our discussion of
Newton’s Laws and tie in connections
with convection currents to describe the
movement of the crustal plates of the
Earth and the land features that we
observe based on these movements.
Electives
Art
As we move into 2016 when we return from break,
we will be painting with acrylic and latex house
paint, carving soap and foam, sculpting clay, building with paper mache, and more. I am also excited
that our art shirts and hoodies will be coming in
soon. This will be the first year we have Raven Art
Shirts! Let's show our art pride! When we return
from break, applications will also be available to
begin applying for next year's Advanced Art and Art
1 classes.
Principles of Manufacturing
Students will be learning a drawing program on the
computer in order to laser engrave glass mugs. We
will be applying new technology as well as applying
math skills and problem solving. The next project
the students will begin learning metal fabrication
through the project of bending sheet metal into a
camping grill.
Spanish IA
In the fourth grading period students will learn to
identify and describe and give the ages of the members of their family. They will learn to introduce
their own family members and to answer questions
about who is in their family and to identify ownership or to whom something belongs in the family, in
Spanish.
Spanish I
4th Grading Period will be learning about: clothing,
descriptive words (adding colors), gender/number,
preferences (reviewing gustar), comparisons (mas
grande que…etc), negation, want, need, and have
vocabulary.
Spanish II 4th Grading Period will be learning
about: restaurant and food etiquette, food and beverages, restaurants, markets and other stores, shopping expressions, numbers 100-10000, review preterite and present tense and por and para.
Spanish NS
The student engages in the written exchange of information, opinions, and ideas in a variety of time
frames in formal situations with regard to beauty,
fashion, design, language, literature, visual and performing arts, architecture, and creativity.
Touch System Data Entry - We are learning how to
use Proofreader Marks and Editing of Documents. In
addition we are now moving into learning the parts
of a Business Letter and the different formats that a
letter can be typed such as Block and Modified Block
Letter.
Principle of Information Technology - We are learning Copyright Laws and how to apply them when
using images and other documents for designing
and/or research.
Business Information Management - We are learning Database Management which is creating, query
and maintaining a Database using Access 2013.
Concepts of Engineering
Students will work on the Hands-On Safety Test.
This is a physical demonstration of a student’s mastery of using production shop cutting tools safely.
Upon completion of the Hands-On Safety Tests, the
students will proceed to design and construct a CO2
car.
Art Design
Students will be covering illustration, graphic design and end of course exams.
Choir
Students will be focusing steadily on UIL sight singing procedures and preparing music for Pre-UIL and
UIL contests in February and March, respectively.
Teen Leadership
We will work on building relationships within the
class as well as setting class norms. Students will get
the opportunity to give a variety of speeches about
themselves and their experiences.
Theater Arts
Intermediate and Advanced Theatre will be working
on all the elements of Technical Theatre.
