MASON`S 5TH ANNUAL SUN DRIED MUSIC FEST IS ON AUGUST
MASON in Motion MASON’S 5TH ANNUAL SUN DRIED MUSIC FEST IS ON AUGUST 22 - 24 The fifth annual Sun Dried Music Fest will return to downtown Mason on August 22, 23 & 24, 2014. The event, hosted by the nonprofit Sun Dried Music Festival, Inc., will again showcase a variety of exciting musical performances: rock, blues, jazz, folk, country, and many more! The music festival is free, thanks to support from sponsors, most of whom are Chamber members. This event always features many popular bands in the mid-Michigan area. There will be lots of music, plenty of food, a variety of merchandise vendors, and a refreshment tent right next to the main stage. On the evening of Friday, August 22, there will be an old-fashioned street dance with the Life Support Band on the streets of downtown Mason from 7:00 to 11:00 PM. The refreshment tent and vendor booths will also be open Friday evening. The music fest begins in earnest on Saturday, August 23 at 12 noon with bands playing consecutive sets through to the late evening. Some of the bands scheduled include Assume Nothing Band, The Backwoods Band, Showdown, Avon Bomb, North Country Flyers, Soultown Lansing Band, and Freddie Cunningham & The Root Doctor. They will each take the stage at the corner of Photo by Larry Hook at MLive Maple and Jefferson Street, in historic downtown Mason. Families are invited to enjoy the special attractions for kids as well as the food, refreshments, and other vendors that are a part of the festival again this year. The venue focus for all the events is the downtown street corner of Jefferson and Maple -- but the festival extends a block each way east and south from the intersection. Additional attractions and vendors will be found on Barnes Street through Saturday evening. The Mason Ministerial Association is again organizing worship music on Sunday morning. Sponsors of the fifth annual Sun Dried Music Fest include the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce, Ware’s Pharmacy, Mason Auto Body Repair, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, Bestsellers Books & Coffee Co., WOW!, Dart Bank, Timothy Zielinski DDS, Masontoday.com, The Daily Scoop, among many others. NEW MACC BOARD MEMBER NAMED Mark Voss of Farm Bureau Insurance – Mark Voss Agency has been elected to the board of directors of the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce. His agency is located at 700 W. Ash Street in Mason and offers home, auto, life and health insurance -- along with annuities and financial planning. Terms on the MACC board are usually three years in length. Board members who have completed full terms are not eligible to rejoin the board for one year. Often, three to five new individuals are elected to the board each year. AUGUST 2014 MASON in Motion RULING ALLOWS STATE TO IMPOSE BOTH SALES AND USE TAX ON SAME TRANSACTION 3 WELCOME NEW CHAMBER MEMBERS: David R. Bruegel, PC 155 W. Maple Street - Mason, MI 48854 Phone: (517) 244-0100 AUGUST 2013Chamber of Commerce is passing along MASON 3 The Michigan this in Motion Fax: (517) 676-6035 - www.bruegelpc.com “glimpse of possible things to come” to their members: David R. Bruegel – [email protected] The Michigan Supreme Court recently ruled 5-1 in Andrie Inc v Department of Treasury to allow the Michigan We assist persons in legal concerns to help real people with the very real problems they encounter in life’s journey. Sharing offices and integrating Department of Treasury to collect both the 6% Sales and the practices with John and Bill Noud, we create a resource for Mason area 6% Use Tax on the same Michigan-based transaction -- unless clients with a combined 100 years in law practice. the consumer can prove that the sales tax was paid. This ruling turns the burden of proof on its head and has very serious consequences for both Michigan sellers and Michigan consumers alike. Michigan sellers could now be faced with masses of requests for separately stated line items showing the tax and/or affidavits from their customers in order to prove that the tax was paid to Michigan, and consumers must now keep every receipt and/or affidavit to demonstrate that the seller paid the tax. If the consumer cannot prove this, they may be forced to pay the 6% Use Tax even if they rightly assume that the 6% Sales Tax was included in the total price. The Michigan Chamber advises that their members who are purchasing items in Michigan now be diligent in making sure to either obtain receipts that explicitly show a line item for sales tax, or ask the seller for an Affidavit so you can later prove under audit that the tax was paid by the seller to the state of Michigan. For more information, contact Tricia Kinley at (517) 371-7669 or [email protected]. Under the leadership of Mike Botke, program director, Ingham Teen Court is a program that annually helps nearly 200 local at-risk teens and their families through four areas of juvenile justice. These are as follows: diversion, intervention, prevention, and education. As such, Ingham Teen Court provides a juvenile justice diversion program, giving first-time youth offenders the opportunity to take personal responsibility for an offense committed without establishing a formal juvenile record. Additionally, Teen Court offers over 500 area junior and senior high school students a chance to volunteer and serve as peer jurors, court bailiffs, and clerks. Hearings are overseen by Ingham County Family and District Court Judges (volunteering their time) at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing (Cooley Law School donates office space and courtroom use to Teen Court) and the Ingham County Courthouse in Mason. Child and Family Charities is a local nonprofit organization with over 100 years of service to midMichigan. Child and Family Charities provides child welfare, behavioral health, juvenile justice, residential, prevention and advocacy programs for children, youth and families. Their programs include Angel House, a residential program for pregnant and parenting teens and their babies. 4 MASON in Motion AUGUST 2014 THERE’S A PLACE FOR YOU ON CHAMBER COMMITTEES The Chamber’s Board of Directors relies on many committees to plan, implement, and evaluate programs and activities during the year. Each committee depends on volunteers like you to contribute time and energy to help make every activity a value for Chamber members. Contact the Chamber office to get in on the action! Ad hoc committees meet as necessary, usually only three or four times a year. Standing committees meet monthly and make their reports to the Board of Directors. Four of these standing committees and their chairpersons are: Ambassadors Committee – Lori Pfost, Dart Bank -- The Ambassadors Committee helps members get the most value from their Chamber membership by coordinating several networking events, sponsoring ribbon cuttings to bring attention to business milestones, and by providing a variety of additional opportunities to mentor new and current members. They oversee the Chamber’s networking events, for which there are several ad hoc committees. Economic Development Committee – Jeff Oesterle, Little Creeks Cattle & Grain -- The Economic Development Committee seeks out opportunities for business growth in the Mason area to create value for our entire business community. They maintain a list of available commercial space, identify and help resolve issues that may inhibit business growth, and provide community information to prospective business partners to promote economic growth. Hometown USA Committee – Jeff Haueter, A&W Restaurant -- The Hometown USA Committee has an overall objective of highlighting the value of the Mason area and Mason area businesses through supporting the marketing and promotional activities of members. Organizing group advertising programs, assisting with marketing planning, promoting the Member Value Card and gift certificate programs, community events, and more -- are all activities aimed at bringing more business to the Mason area and keeping resident dollars close to home. They oversee the Chamber’s community events, for which there are several ad hoc committees. Membership Services Committee – Andrew Serratelli, Dart Container Corporation -- The Membership Services Committee recommends new Chamber member services and enhances the value of membership by providing opportunities for businesses to become more efficient and effective. The committee looks for new services and benefit programs that add value to Chamber membership. They organize and work on the annual Raffle Party and other fundraisers that provide essential funding for creating value in our community. 2014 MACC Board of Directors Sue Fulk.................................................................................. Mason’s Sesquicentennial Legacy Tree Program In today's fast paced world, it's good to lay down roots. Mason City residents will be able to do that -- literally -with the help of planning from the Mason 150 Committee. The group has been working on a program to plant at least 150 trees in the City to commemorate Mason’s sesquicentennial in 2015. Individuals, companies, service groups and other organizations can now order trees to enhance their suggested location. Location choices include along streets, public rights of way and City of Mason parks. The Legacy Tree Program is a great way to honor someone, while also promoting community spirit, improving native species habitat, and supporting outdoor education. The $150.00 cost of your tree will include professional planting of a large tree, including soil preparation, planting, watering and mulch. April and September 2015 plantings are planned, incorporating Earth and Arbor Day events. Donations can be mailed to the City of Mason, Attn: Legacy Trees, 201 W. Ash St. Mason, MI 48854. Questions? Please call Ingrid Nova at 517-676-5891 or e-mail:[email protected] “Help Make and Keep Mason Beautiful for another 150 Years!” Your gift helps enhance our community for future generations. Tree purchase costs, soil preparation, planting, mulch and continuing care are all included in your donation. The trees are guaranteed by the City of Mason for two years. Each tree can be purchased for $150.00, payable to the City of Mason. Individual donations can be grouped to combine donations for a tree, or multiple trees. If the donations are made separately, please add a note so that we can recognize this as a separate donation to be combined with other named donors. e.g., “Please combine for the Jane Doe Family.” Donor Information: First Name ________________Last Name ____________________ Business Name__________________________________________ Street Address __________________________________________ City ________________________ State ______ ZIP ____________ Phone # _________________ E-mail ________________________ Dedication Information: Donated by...
