Georgia PGA Foundation
The
(the Foundation), a nonprofit charitable organization, was
established with the mission of enhancing lives and improving the
communities served by our Georgia Section through golf
programming and fundraising, and in the process, growing the
game throughout the region. As a PGA member, you should be
familiar with the Foundation as a means to share our talents and
ourselves in support of the future of the game. Here are a few
details to help you understand the Foundation and its mission:
How and why was Georgia PGA Foundation created?
The Georgia PGA acquired ownership of the Georgia Junior
Golf Foundation in the late summer of 2011, and re-branded
the organization the Georgia PGA Foundation as a vehicle to
grow the game. The Foundation was introduced to the
membership at our Spring 2012 meeting.
What programs do we deliver through the Foundation?
1. The Georgia PGA Junior Tour
Our goal is to provide junior golfers throughout our state an
opportunity to experience competitive golf. Each year we offer
an outstanding list of venues for our junior players to
experience. The Tour teaches the values of sportsmanship,
honesty, self-discipline, integrity and a competitive spirit. By
encouraging the involvement of young people, the Tour serves
to grow the game.
2. Interactive Etiquette and Rules of Golf Schools
Interactive Etiquette and Rules of Golf Schools are delivered
through PowerPoint presentations and video programming by
Georgia PGA Professional and Foundation volunteers throughout
the state. The program is offered to middle school and high school
students and serves to elevate their knowledge of the game. All
participants receive a copy of “The Rules of Golf.”
3. J. Smith Lanier & Company Charity Classic
supporting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation
For more than 20 years, our section professionals have
participated annually in the J. Smith Lanier & Co. Brain Tumor
for Children Charity Classic in support of the Pediatric Brain
Tumor Foundation. The proceeds go toward brain tumor
research and golf therapy programs for the affected children.
4. Drive, Chip and Putt
This free youth golf development initiative is open to boys and
girls, ages seven to 15, from all 50 states who compete in separate
divisions and four age categories. Top performers at the local level
advance through sub-regional and regional qualifiers. The top 80
performers – 40 boys and 40 girls – earn an invitation to the
National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club.
5. National Charities, Endowments and Scholarships
During the past few years, The American Cancer Society, Folds of
Honor, Autism Speaks and other charitable organizations have
received support from the Georgia PGA. Working together with
these organizations, we deliver the game through tournaments,
clinics, and promotions. Scholarships for participation in junior
events are awarded to deserving junior players. The Georgia PGA
and our partners are changing lives, making a difference, and
growing the game and the Georgia PGA brand.
How do we currently generate funding for our
initiatives?
1. Georgia License Tag Program
Using our personalized Georgia PGA Golf Tag delivers revenue
annually to the Foundation.
2. Birdies for Love
Since 2012, the McGladrey Classic and the Georgia PGA have
teamed up with the Davis Love Foundation through the Birdies
Fore Love initiative. Birdies Fore Love, presented by Nalley
Buick-GMC, is a fun way to bring new donors to our
Foundation. Donors pledge dollars for every birdie made at
The McGladrey Classic; their donations go directly to the
Georgia PGA Foundation.
3. Foundation Golf Tournaments
PGA Professionals host events at their facilities to support the
Foundation. Can you?
4. The Georgia PGA Section Gala
Our section’s premier social function and auction bring
charitable organizations, partners, golf associations and PGA
members together to create awareness and deliver the funding
needed to expand our reach.
5. Private Donations
The generosity of our friends in Georgia is greatly appreciated.
These private donations and corporation gifts encourage and
allow us to create initiatives that help us serve our communities
and grow the game.
Who benefits from the Georgia PGA Foundation?
PGA members believe the act of sharing is extremely powerful,
whether it involves your time, talent or a financial contribution.
Giving back provides benefits exponentially. Collaborating on
programs with charitable partners and other organizations affords
us new opportunities to expand the game of golf. Initiatives with
our corporate partners who benefit from our ability to deliver the
game permit us to build our brand and increase our section
revenues, allowing us to expand our member programming,
including education, employment and golf events. The growth of
the game is our mission, but the willingness to share the values of
the game with others is a business practice we as golf professionals
can all share and embrace.
Let’s share our time and talent in support of our beloved
game! To learn more about how you can get involved in this
important initiative, please contact Brian Albertson at
[email protected].

Wristy Business
During the final round of the 2015 Masters Tournament, Tiger Woods had a difficult time finding the fairway off the tee. One of his wayward drives proved to
be particularly painful for the 14-time major winner.
On Hole 9, Tiger’s drive drifted to the right and ended
up in an area of pine trees and pine straw. When he
played his next stroke, his iron contacted the ball, but it
then struck a tree root hidden under the pine straw.
That tree root abruptly stopped the forward progress
of the club and injured his right wrist. After his round,
Woods indicated that the shock to his hand dislocated
a joint which he somehow managed to put back into
place.
Could Tiger have avoided this painful jolt to his wrist?
Decision 13-2/27 [Probing Near Ball for Tree Roots]
indicates that Tiger could have probed the area around
his ball with a tee or the like to see if his club might
strike a hidden root in the course of making his next stroke. However, this authorized probing does carry some risk. In order to
avoid a penalty under Rule 13-2 [Improving Lie, Area of Intended Stance or Swing, or Line of Play], the act of probing must not
improve the lie of your ball, the area of your intended stance or swing, or your line of play. Furthermore, and this is where the
risk in probing in an area of pine straw is the greatest, in order to avoid a penalty under Rule 18-2 [Ball at Rest Moved by Player,
Partner, Caddie or Equipment], the probing must not cause your ball to move.
With the pristine conditions at the Augusta National Golf Course, Tiger had no reason to suspect that there might be a tree root
lurking underneath his ball. Even if he did, he could not take the risk of causing his ball to move by probing for his ball lying on the
pine straw. For purposes of discussion, let’s say that Tiger did probe through the pine straw with a tee to see if there might be a
tree root in the vicinity of his ball. In the process of discovering the root he would have caused his ball in play to move. Under
Rule 18-2, he would incur a one-stroke penalty and he would be required to replace the ball. Then what?
He would probably try to advance his ball toward the hole by picking the ball clean, i.e., by barely touching the pine straw with his
club during the stroke. His other alternative would be to deem his ball unplayable and proceed under Rule 28 [Ball Unplayable],
but that alternative would cost him another one-stroke penalty. Rule 28 offers the following three options, none of which would
be very appealing to Tiger:
a. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which
the original ball was last played;
b. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball
is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or
c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.
