Godfrey News
Happy New Year! Let’s raise a glass and
toast the Ard Godfrey family before
the holidays are over! The Christmas
tree and garland will soon come down
and the Godfrey House will be closed
to the public until May. Private tours,
however, may be arranged by calling
Muriel Bochnak at 612-781-8791. There
is a small fee, and you need ten or
more people to tour.

A big THANK YOU goes out to all who
made our holiday season a success:
volunteers who sold nuts and candy,
cleaned and decorated the Godfrey
house, acted as guides and hostesses
for the December Holiday Party,
and brought treats for the party.
We appreciate the Woman’s Club
members and staff who participated.
We all had a good time!
The Godfrey Board is always looking
for new members. We meet on the
first Wednesday of the month at
10:30 am at the Club. New docents are
also needed. We will have a training
day in late April at the Godfrey House
for Club volunteers and interns. Call
Muriel Bochnak NOW if you have an
interest.
“Be A Santa to a Senior” Delivers Gifts to Seniors
during the Holiday Season
Thank you to all those Club members who contributed to “Be a Santa to a Senior,” a
Spotlight on Service (SOS) project in December. In the photo above, project volunteers
pose with only a small portion of the many gifts collected for seniors at Augustana
Healthcare Center. Club member Nina Katzung (at far right) led the project with
Home Instead (John Stuck, third from right) and the Augustana social workers.
Our 2016 intern search begins in
March for college students for
summer positions at the Godfrey
House. After interviews, we’ll hire two
or three students to work weekends
in June, July and August as guides
at $12.00 per hour. We fund this
program with our nut sales and “Let’s
Celebrate!” event.
On Tuesday, January 26, our Godfrey
speaker is JoAnn Funk. She will talk
about buttons made from clam shells
found in the Mississippi River. Please
join us in the Ballroom at 11:00 am for
her program, “A Pearl Button Boom.”

Mary Anne Wise
“Rug Money & Stories from
the House of Birds: Craft
Development Work in Guatemala”
In 2009, with
no master
plan, Mary
Anne Wise and
Jody Slocum
volunteered
to teach a
rug-hooking
class to Maya
women. Five
years later
the women had a successful debut at
the prestigious International Folk Art
Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Wise
discusses how the women transform
recycled clothing scraps into beautiful
rugs, and — in the process — transform
themselves into women capable of
success. She discusses her work with
Tzutijil Maya embroidery artists,
people who refer to themselves as
“The House of Birds.” Mary Anne is
a nationally recognized weaver and
rug-hooking design teacher. Her work
is in numerous corporate and private
collections throughout the U.S.
Victoria Woodhull, put her name in
contention, and brings us to the present
current election dynamics, exploring
the challenges each of these candidates
faced in pursuit of this daunting
endeavor. Dr. Kotz is a career educator
with education and business expertise.

Farhio Khalif
“Journey from Somalia”
Farhio Khalif speaks
of her life in terms
of a “journey.” Her
journey began in
Somalia and made
stops along the way
in Italy, Alabama,
Florida, Washington,
D.C. and Virginia.
About five years
ago, she and her two sons arrived in
Minneapolis which she decided as her
destination in order to join its vibrant
Somali community. Farhio is a wellknown and recognized leader in the
East African and Somali communities.
Paul E. Kotz
“Women Who Have Run for
President: A Historical Look from
the 1870s to the Present”
In honor of
Constitution Day,
Article 2, Section 1 of
our U.S. Constitution,
and the upcoming
election, Dr. Paul
Kotz conducted a
study to determine
how many women
have pursued the
U.S. presidency, and the character and
strengths each brought to the election
process, and to building our country
as a nation. In his presentation, he
reviews the period from the 1870s
when our first presidential nominee,

The Writers
Do you feel lethargic during these
long, cold winter months? Our Chair,
Cathryn Olson, often stimulates our
writing by giving us a topic and 10
minutes to write. When the time is
up, I am surprised by how much I
have written and the latent ideas
which came forth.
Sometimes I apply the ten-minute
rule to tasks I can’t seem to get
done such as organizing the sweater
shelves in my closet. There is some
satisfaction in finding that gray
cashmere cardigan under a pile of
hurriedly-tossed garments I hadn’t
bothered to fold when I put them
away. “I thought I had left it some
place, and here it is!” That ten
minutes can turn into an hour of
organizing the rest of the closet.
Another day, I will put my spices in
alphabetical order; that really can be
done in 10 minutes.
Writing is what we are all about,
and nothing stimulates that activity
more than reading. After finishing a
novel, take 10 minutes to analyze how
the author kept you involved. How
did she organize her material? Go
back and read her descriptions, her
dialogues, and her characterizations.
When did you start empathizing
with the protagonist and thinking, “I
know how that feels.”? Perhaps you
will convince yourself that you can do
some significant writing. Sit down at
your computer or find that legal pad
and a pen. Start writing.

• Children’s menus and menus without prices are available upon request.
• All prices are subject to tax and service charge. Exceptions will be clearly marked
“inclusive.”
• The service charge is the property of the Club, not the individual employee.
