Our new website www.eastmalverntc.com.au will serve as a excellent portal for members to communicate and stay up to date with club events and news. ! PAGE 1 EAST MALVERN TENNIS CLUB ! PRESIDENT’S PODIUM Welcome fellow Tennis players. I am still pinching myself about being given the responsibility to help steer our wonderful club. I am also delighted with the enormous talent and capability of the Committee members. We have held one meeting and are about to hold the second. It is clear that there are many competing priorities for our time and the clubs funds. As both of these are finite commodities, we need to be careful with both. We will keep you informed of our progress during the year. We have a club that is the envy of most others. We have plenty of courts, but more importantly, a wonderful membership group. There are 13 committee members and over 500 club members. We all need to take ownership of our club. If you see something that isn't right, then tell one of us. If you feel able to, you might question what is going on, at the time. This would include people who use our facilities without contributing. If you are aware of it, tell us. We will be checking if people are members, over the summer. Please don't take offence if you are asked, we are trying to protect the members interests. If you think there are ways to improve the club, we want to hear that as well. We know it isn't perfect, and yet pointing out what is wrong isn't nearly as useful as suggestions of how to improve. All of us want the best for our club. Occasionally there is misinformation circulating around the place. Please feel free to check, if something sounds wrong. I have recently heard a comment about Futures Tennis Academy, as an example. I can assure you that Wes and his team have been integral to this clubs success for over 25 years. We have been blessed with a leading edge Coaching Group, recognised nationally. The majority of our members have arrived, courtesy of the coaching team. This is a great time of the year to sit back and reflect on what has transpired, and what is yet to come. My family and I wish all of you, a wonderful festive season. Regards Ralph Ralph Muir-Morris President MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR We hope you enjoy another edition of Court Talk, we enjoy bringing this newsletter to you. DECEMBER 2013 OBITUARY JENNY HENDERSON Sadly, Jenny passed away early Thursday morning 28/11/2013 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Since her joining EMTC in 1984 many, many members would have had contact with Jenny, be it on the court or socially, at cancer fundraising functions such as film nights and fashion parades or the numerous fun Christmas celebrations. She was a wonderful organiser and caterer who loved people as well as raising money for charity and was always loyally supported by her wonderful husband Hughie. Jenny was heavily involved with competition both weekend and midweek as a player and she captained many teams over the years. Prior to joining EMTC, Jenny had been a member of Leggett’s Tennis Club. When that club closed in the mid eighties Jenny arranged for 20 of her friends to transfer across to EMTC to continue playing midweek competition. In 1990, Jenny joined the club’s Committee of Management with the view to support and assist the running of all aspects of the club, in particular the midweek competition, an integral part of our club. She remained on the committee for the next 23 years as well as helping convene midweek ladies tennis. In addition, she represented our club at Southern Districts and Bayside Tennis Associations for midweek and weekend tennis. In 2002 Jenny was awarded Life Membership in recognition of her tireless work and her invaluable contribution to EMTC. Over the past 12 months Jenny repeatedly dragged herself off her sick bed to attend committee meetings and continue her work for the club, so devoted and passionate was she about EMTC. We will sorely miss Jenny’s presence around the club, her happy positive demeanour, her smiling face, her quirky sense of humour and her amazing work ethic. May she rest in peace. Jill Broad Friend and fellow Life Member EMTC would like to thank Jenny for all she has done for our club, it would not be what it is today without her amazing contribution over so many years. The EMTC Community wishes to extend our deepest sympathy to her family. Thank you to Clive Edmonds for speaking on behalf of EMTC at her funeral. It was attended by many of her EMTC friends showing their admiration and respect to an amazing woman. Rest Peacefully Jenny ! PAGE 5 EAST MALVERN TENNIS CLUB ! Carpark – pot holes filled by the council. The carpark is actually owned by VicRoads and not Stonnington council. It would be beneficial to have this sealed but the land would need to be purchased from VicRoads first. We will continue to work towards a positive outcome on this one. Vending Machine – a new larger machine has replaced the old one. It’s much improved and has a broader selection for members. Recycling Bins – 2 new recycling bins are now at the club Court & General Maintenance – Clive continues to do a great job in this area and his work keeps our courts in good condition. PAGE 10 EAST MALVERN TENNIS CLUB ! DECEMBER 2013 The MOST common error in the game - “Reception skills” I am often asked what is the most common error in the game? I always answer “reception skills” which includes everything before one makes contact to the ball [steps one to four below]. Except for serving Tennis is a game of receive first and then send [a rally]. Therefore Tennis is an open skill sport, unlike golf which is a closed skill sport. Unfortunately we concentrate so much on sound technique that we forget that one’s technique is only as good as your body positioning in relation to the ball. If you are consistently too far, close, high or low to the ball sound technique will count for little. Your aim should be to arrive at the ball in a balanced position ready to hit the ball in front of your leading knee a comfortable distance to the side of your body. All players, whether conscious of it or not, go through the same six step mental process. 1] Anticipation/Reaction: Every stroke starts from a ready condition. A mental state of awareness. Before your opponent even hits the ball there is a good chance you can anticipate what and where the ball will go, for example, by watching for cues such as how much pressure they are under- more pressure higher, slower shot, less pressure faster lower shot. Or you may watch the shape of their backswing or the change of their grip which will determine the height or length of the shot or what type of spin is going to be hit, or whether it will be a fast, soft, high or low shot. Sometimes a cue as simple as an aggressive looking face tells you all you need to know! 2] Perception: From there you must perceive the trajectory of the ball by tracking: the height, direction, speed, length and spin of the ball to be able to move into position to be able to perform the shot. Remembering that a tennis shot has two trajectories the flight of the ball through the air, and, then the one after the bounce. This can be extremely confusing to a young beginner player who may run to hit at the bounce of the ball and not consider the second trajectory of the ball after it bounces. Your goal is to hit the ball at the top of the bounce. 3] Foot Work: Once players know where the ball is going to bounce they must then quickly move to position their body to the side of the ball to execute the shot in a balanced position the correct distance away from their body. 4] Decision making: As they move they must also decide where they are going to send the ball back to their opponent [cross court, down the line, down the middle, high, low fast, slow, topspin, slice etc.]. This decision is usually based on the amount of pressure one is under. 5] Finally Execution [or Technique]: As they move to the ball they are also thinking about the technique necessary to actually play the shot e.g. change grip, swing shape etc. and other necessary physical tasks to perform the shot. 6] Recovery: After execution player then need to recover to the central location on the baseline ready for the next cycle to begin. All this happens in a couple of seconds and the cycle of receive and send continues until the rally is complete. The job of the coach is to fast track this process, make it transparent and allow the pupil to work out which step is the problem area for remedial action to happen. FTA Director - Wes Horskins !
