From our Principal…
We have much to celebrate at Liberty. Our recent “March
Madness” staff/student basketball game was a huge success. It was
wonderful to see the gym full of laughing and cheering parents,
students, and staff. While the staff officially “won” the game, we were
all winners through that shared, often hilarious experience! Thanks
to all who participated and all who simply joined in the joy and
laughter. Our Knowledge Bowl team missed being League
Champions by just 3-4 points, and had a fantastically successful
season. Science Olympiad’s run ended at Regionals, but many
medals were brought home and the Robotics team is still in
competition mode. Go Lions!
With our 8th graders completing forecasting for their freshman
classes and plans for welcoming our incoming 6th graders this
spring while simultaneously planning for next year, it seems the year
is flying by. In fact, it’s 70% over! Ongoing discussions about the
new standardized SBA test (Smarter Balanced Assessment) are
worrisome at times, but our focus remains on teaching and learning. Students have taken practice tests and are currently taking “interim”
assessments that give us information on how they are performing
now. The summative SBA will provide results within three weeks,
rather than the typical August results from the MSP, so we will now
be able to use that data to inform instruction and hit the ground
running with our specific student needs. Our staff is working
diligently to fully shift to the new Washington State Standards (the
Common Core Standards adopted by the state Superintendent of
Public Instruction), and we anticipate their dedication and passion
will show in our scholars’ test results this spring.
As typically happens in spring, our students are getting a little
goofy. Please help us enforce our dress code as the weather gets
warmer by insuring all skirts and shorts are longer than fingertips
when arms are hanging loosely. We know the students know our
expectations, especially when they begin to tug their shorts down
towards their knees as they approach us.
Our students make this work so gratifying...thanks for sharing
them with us!

By the time you read this nearly 200 Liberty students will be practicing
for their first track meet. That is the big one and it’s the first meet of the
season, the Twi-light meet with Skyridge. It starts at 6 pm on April 28th at Doc
Harris Stadium. Track is our final sports' season of the year and will culminate
with the District Track Meet at McKenzie Stadium on May 28. I would urge
all of you to attend a meet or two. We have some very talented athletes at
Liberty.
Liberty offers a wide range of activities and sports for students and they
take advantage of these opportunities. By the end of track season nearly 2/3 of
our student body will have participated in a sport. Participation in athletics
also has led to success in the classroom as well. Liberty student athletes have
consistently held higher GPAs than the school average year after year.

ATTENTION:
Please help your student understand a couple of key rules, especially as it is daylight earlier these days! Liberty is a “closed campus,” meaning that once students are on our campus, whether they ride the
bus, are dropped off, or walk, they may not leave unless picked up by a parent/guardian. This is
located in our student handbook on page 8 and has been stressed throughout the year, but we feel it’s
important that you know as well. If a student leaves campus, a disciplinary consequence is given as safety is
a priority, and when you think your student is at school, we expect them to be at school.
Another reminder is related to water bottles. We know that drinking water throughout the day
is good for our brains, and we encourage students to bring a clear, refillable water bottle to school for their
use. However, opaque water bottles are not allowed. Nor are other beverages beyond water
except in the Commons at lunch. We’re specifically concerned about energy drinks, having seen several
in the last couple of days. Food and beverage expectations are listed on page 10 of our handbook. Our expectations are in place to keep your scholars safe and to provide a positive and nurturing
learning community at Liberty. Thanks for your help with this!

Face to Face: Cultivating Kids’ Social Lives in Today’s
Digital World. Book study will be led by Billie McEathron,
Liberty School Counselor, and will meet at 9 AM on
Tuesdays. We will begin after Spring Break.
“ . . . a great go-to guide for parents, educators, and
counseling professionals to foster empathy, connection,
and emotional resiliency in today’s youth.” This book
addresses healthy friendships as well as peer mistreatment and
offers tools and tips for dealing with the dilemma of digital media
and connecting deeply with kids.

New Vaccine Requirements for Fall 2015
Students in 7th and 8th grade will be required to have
two doses of Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccine. This year
only students in 6th grade were required to have two
doses.
If you are unsure if your student will need this vaccine

The YMCA Boys and Girls
Outdoor Leadership Development (BOLD & GOLD) Program
is excited to invite students from Liberty MS to join us for
the ultimate summer adventure!
Join us this summer for a one to three week long wilderness expedition that will give you a
chance to camp, backpack, rock climb, play games, have fun and make new friends
with a group of your peers in some of the Pacific Northwest’s most stunning locations!
The BOLD & GOLD program is dedicated to inspiring
courage and leadership in diverse groups of adolescent
boys and girls through outdoor adventures. Our small group
sizes (9 students max with 2-3 instructors) provide for the
perfect opportunity for our participants to learn how to
thrive in nature, make close bonds, have fun with their new
team, and most importantly to be themselves!

CAMAS YOUTH VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE (CYVL)
Girls: Grade 5-8, Be a part of the team this spring and join us in the Camas Youth Volleyball League. All skill levels are
welcome. Our focus is on learning skills, team work, the fundamentals of volleyball and the most important thing, having fun!
Camas High School players will be part of the coaching staff along with other great coaches. Your daughters coach will contact
you before kick-off night. Registration deadline is 3/23. Practices and games will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays
and times will be determined after the registration deadline and the teams are formed.

SEW FUN! A Sewing Class for Youth
Ages: 10-14, Learn how to sew in this fun, supportive environment. Complete two projects as you learn the basics of sewing and
