Barge Party: Aloha to Summer!
The Newcomers’ Club held its annual barge party on Saturday,
September 9. This year’s hosts were Ann Gamber and Gabe
Nasser of Lakeview Dr. Their lovely home provided the
perfect backdrop for our Luau-themed evening, complete with
loads of tiki torches. We had incredible, authentic Hawaiian
food provided by Roweena'
s catering that was both plentiful
and delicious. About 130 people floated off into a beautiful
sunset on 12 barges. The music was festive as were the guests
who dressed in colorful tropical garb! A great time was had by
all.
Tiki torches and the lit palm trees on Donna Black’s and Curtis
Haymore’s “flamingo barge” complemented the Polynesian food and
music. Barge decoration themes ranged from tropical to “Hail to the
Redskins.” (Photos by Kent Christian.)
Special thanks to all the "busy bees" whose help made this
party possible...this group coordinated food prep, set up and
clean up, music, details, filling all those tiki torches, dock
master, captains cooler prep, registration, coozie selling, and
countless other tasks: Chrissy McManus, Jason Ianotti, Sandy
Chiong, Susan Drury, Miranda Thomas, Trish Gomersall, Lisa
Levine, Heather Thomas, Kent Christian, Curtis Haymore,
Donna Black, and Suzanne Friedman. This group throws one
heck of a party!
And an extra special thanks to all of our barge captains: Joanne
and David Dale, Curtis Haymore, Donna Black, Jerry Ellig and
Sandy Chiong, John McManus, Suzanne Friedman, Leigh and
Bob Gonzalez, Todd West, Ken Kastner and Eva Kosztarab,
Lois and Marty Mandelburg, Gary and Debbie McManis, Joe
and Aileen Pisciotta, Sue Presti and Scott Kalkwarf.
If you are interested in hosting this event (or any other) next
year, please contact Sam West, barge party coordinator, at
[email protected].

November Happy Hour Meet Your Hosts
Eva Kosztarab and Ken Kastner have owned their Lake
Barcroft home for 13 years and lived in it for the last 12. (That
first year was a blur of renovating – a familiar activity for many
of us in Lake Barcroft.) Their cocktail party on Nov. 3 will be
the second time they have hosted a Newcomers Club event.
Many of you will remember the beer tasting they hosted in
March 2005. Or not!
Eva and Ken are both attorneys – she has her own firm in
Fairfax focused on real estate law, while Ken is an
environmental lawyer with the firm of Hogan and Hartson.
They are both University of Virginia alumni – UVA is where
they met – and now their two sons are attending the alma mater.
While Ken was born in Washington state, he has lived in the
Old Dominion for virtually his entire life. Eva was born in
Hungary but came to the States in 1956 and now considers
herself pretty much a native Virginian.
Both are active in the community. Eva is co-president of the
Lake Barcroft Women’s Club and Ken volunteers with The
Raptor Conservancy of Virginia. This is their second time
around in the Newcomers Club, having rejoined when the
much-reviled four –year “term limit” was abolished.
“The Newcomer” sat down with them in their lovely home on a
recent evening and put them in the hot seat.
Why did you move to Lake Barcroft?

Club Events and Activities 2006
The Newcomers’ Club typically hosts a social event each
month. If we’re not hosting an event, we’re usually supplying a
contingent of volunteers to support other Lake Barcroft
community activities.
Additional volunteers are always welcome; contact the event
coordinator if you can help out. If you’d like to coordinate or
host an event, please contact Lisa Levine,
[email protected], or 703-642-0904.
Year Round Project: Gift Bags
Ken. “Where the good fishing is. I don’t know where it is but
my oldest son Greg has a pretty good idea.”
The Newcomer’s Club’s signature project is delivery of gift
bags, loaded with goodies and information about the
community, to new neighbors. Deliver a bag, and be the first to
meet someone new! To help, contact Sandy Chiong, 703-9414790, or [email protected].
What’s your favorite cocktail?
December 9: Holiday Party and Gift Exchange
Ken. “Single malt scotch.”
Eva. “Mint juleps – we grow our own mint.”
A traditional holiday party that includes the famous White
Elephant “gift stealing” game. Coordinator: Colleen Coyle,
