Sail School brings us all together: Kids learning to sail, volunteer instructors of all ages, and a team of
members who built the new Zuma dock just in time. For more on this year’s Sail School, see pages 12-13.
The Commodore’s Corner
Leta Sellers, Commodore
When writing this monthly
column the first thing I do
is ask myself what word
best describes the overall
feeling I get when reviewing
all that has taken place in
this 30 or 31 day period of
time. This month the word
cooperation comes to
mind. Although it goes without saying, having a
successful club depends upon having capable
people in the leadership roles, but it extends so
much farther when you realize the leaders cannot be successful without the people behind the
scenes attending to each and every detail.
Sail School is a great example. Under the
leadership of Al Avey and Kelly Reis, and with
Mike and June Chamberlin assisting, we had
a great year. Walking the grounds during this
event, I heard nothing but laughter and solid
instruction. I had the opportunity to go on the
water with Rich Aaring to get some pictures and
I was not disappointed. It was very blustery and
the ability of our instructors was really brought
home while watching Kay Lee Brown, in the
churning water, righting a capsized boats. Ian
Vickstrom also deserves an applause while capsizing his own boat on purpose in order to help a
younger participant get his boat back up.
All of this cannot take place without solid
meals for our sailors which happened under
the superb guidance and organization of Anne

Ellsworth. It almost seems effortless, until you
realize how many people and how many shifts it
takes to pull this off.
One of the biggest successes of Sail School
was timing the completion of the new Zuma
dock. Glen Hughes and his crew were putting
the last boards in place just as students were
arriving. One thing you can say about Glen, if he
says “I can do it”, it always gets done.
I save the Sail School instructors for my last
mention because without them there would be
no Sail School. I don’t know how many of you
used vacation time or gave up vacations to be
here, but you are the core of what makes this
event so special.
If you made it out to the 4th of July, you
know firsthand that it was one of the best celebrations in memory. Heidi Leyba, along with her
team, was a fireball of energy when it came to
the planning of this event. Between the parade,
led by our neighbor Larry Bangs with his tractor entourage followed by former Commodores
in classic cars and the dunk tank and the kids
games, you were pretty tired just from walking
around by the time dinner was served.
But the fun didn’t stop there. There was live
entertainment—just the perfect blend of music
to relax to, as anticipation built for the grand
finale, our annual fireworks show. We had more
rockets and glitz than ever before. This does not
happen without the expertise of Glen Hughes,
Dave Brown and the fellows that helped set it
up and do the lighting. We met our new friends
and leaders from Tri-Pass who were there and
delighted as much in the fireworks show as we
did. I don’t know how many people were actually involved, but it was definitely well done and
well attended.
That is basically a recap of what my definition of cooperation is in the finest sense of the
word, and I would hope we will continue this
spirit right into the next events of the season.
That being said, coming up next, we have
two national championships: Lido 14 Nationals
July 15 – 17 and Thistle Nationals July 23-29.
Allan Stults is the regatta chair for the Lidos
and Stuart Ramsing is the regatta chair for the
Thistles. I can only imagine the effort it takes to
cross every “t” and dot every “i”.
We have one of the best—if not the best—
Race Committees in the country (a little bias
there), headed by Richard Johnson, Richard
Aaring, and Dave Brown. We are capable of
catering our own food for these events due to
the expertise and diligence of Janet Mitchell
and her team. And we have one of the most
beautiful sites for these types of events and this
year we are particularly proud of the new look
for our clubhouse. Since we’re having company, this is a good time to look at your own
area on the grounds, whether it be dry moorage
for boat trailers or trailer space you live in and
give it a spit and a polish, or more if that’s the
case. These regattas should be great spectator events—you might even want to watch the
races from the water, at a respectable distance,
of course.
After these two nationals, the calendar boasts
events for every weekend through Labor Day.
Next up will be the Concert by the Lake, August 7, from 5-8 pm. The entertainment will
be provided by Michelle Sellers and the Dirty
Regrets. For those wondering, yes, that’s my
girl. Some of you have seen performances by
Michelle at Actor’s Cabaret Theater and she and
the band have played in some of our local Eugene establishments. I can picture the concert
now: picnic baskets spread out, people with their
favorite liquid refreshment all enjoying a musical
tour of some blues, rock-a-billy and a little surf
music, under a warm summer sky with a slight
breeze keeping us cool on a warm August day.
EYC at its best!
One last item, on the glass clothing case in
the clubhouse, you will find a notebook to sign in
and out when visiting your trailer. The clipboard
we used to have has disappeared and has been
replaced by this notebook. You will find more information regarding this club rule in this Bulletin.
As we enjoy the second half of our season, I
don’t want to nag about picking up trash, watching your speed when you are on club grounds, or
the various complaints we all have. Let’s remember that our club is only as good as its collective
members, so keep up the awesome work.

From the Club Manager
Rich Aaring
It had to happen, and it
finally did: the gas pump
died. It was old. There will
be a memorial service in
the fall. Be aware that EYC
will no longer be pumping gas at the club, so if
you need gas, please bring
your own. The Chevron
at the corner of Clearlake
Road and Highway 99 can pump non-alcohol supreme which is what you want for all boat motors.
Also, please note that the Big Whaler is in the
shop. It has accumulated a lot of damage over
the last couple of years. So a new rub-rail and
several hole patches are happening. Please treat
the whaler carefully. It will be hard to replace.
We are continuing to make our way into the
21st century. Our latest accomplishment is to get
a Wikipedia page. And we continue to feed much
information to our Facebook page so “friend”
that. The pictures alone are worth the effort.
That was the funnest Sail School ever. There
were about 30 volunteers who came out and
helped put it on which is way too many to mention. But I would like to thank the Directors Al
Avey and Kelly Reis, next year’s Directors Mike
and June Chamberlin and next year’s Assistant Directors Heidi Leyba and Renée Wingert.
These are the people that drive the bus and our
students are grateful.
The Junior Program is off to a rousing start.
This happens on Wednesday evenings starting at
5:30 pm and is being managed by Chris Thomas
and Evert Slijper. They have pizza after some
sailing and fun games. Please come out and support this. There is no cost to participants.
The 4th of July festivities will not be soon
forgotten. The weather was perfect, the parade
the best in years, the games engaging, the dunk
tank amusing (to some), and the fireworks display amazing—just the best ever thanks to Glen
Hughes and Dave Brown. I would like to thank
Heidi Leyba who directed the whole event assisted by Becky Barker, and give a big shout out to
Eric Leyba who cooked 220 hamburgers. We will
be working on the parking situation for next year.
We are in the heart of the calendar’s busy
season. This weekend, July 15-17 we host the
Lido 14 National Championship (Allan Stults is
Regatta Chair). As soon as that is over we start
in on the Thistle National Championship (Stuart
Ramsing is Regatta Chair). Please come out and
see these events, even if you are not racing or
working them. It is fun and the energy is addictive.
We have the Concert by the Lake on August
7, the Harvest Day Regatta on August 13-14, the
Jim Skeen Youth Unregatta on August 20 (the culmination of the Junior Program Summer Season),
along with the return of the Jungle Cruise that
same day, and the Women’s Cup on August 27
(Kay Lee Brown is the event Chair). There’s still
plenty of fun to have this summer at EYC, so find
a way to make sure you’re here having some!
I must take a moment to remind everyone
that club membership requires that you to have
current registration on your boat as well as insurance on your boat and travel trailer. You are also
required to take care of the area around your
moorage—including mowing. We have mowed
under 51 boats in the last week and will be sending out bills for this soon.
And finally a note for travel trailer owners: we
have placed a notebook for you to do your sign in
as evidence of usage. See Moorage Rule 11d on
page 45 of your current handbook. This book is in
the entry of the clubhouse.

A Word of Thanks from Dave Brown
A big thank you to all that helped with the fireworks this year. I have
heard nothing but great comments. We had great support from Lane
County, Tri-Pass, Lane Fire (on and off the water crews), and Lane County
Marine Patrol. The Marine Patrol commented that they had no issues on
the water as everyone had their boats in a safe location with anchor and
running lights working. Lots of people at Richardson Park saw the show—
the lot was FULL. And our EYC pyrotechnic crew all came back in good
shape, although pretty dang tired. Thanks everyone, it was one to remember!
Another note: If you have an outboard motor on your boat, lock it with a good secure lock, not just
a bicycle cable. Record the serial number and maybe even take a picture of it. If your radios and
other electronics have serial numbers, it’s good to record them, too. There has been at least one
instance of a missing dinghy and outboard so far this season.
Bow Lines, Stern Lines, Spring Lines, and Bumpers
Ted Walkup, Vice Commodore
This past Sunday I had the honor of being the EYC Officer of the Day (OD). Normally the OD responsibilities consist of welcoming members and guests to the club, monitoring weather conditions,
and checking out club boats. Because the weather was cloudy and raining, I thought the day would be
a little mundane with nobody wanting to check out club boats. Boy, was I wrong.
A southeasterly wind around 18 mph (according to our weather station) was blowing across
the lake creating large waves. When the wind comes out of the southeast, the waves tend to build
in height until they hit a stationary object such as a dock or a boat tied to docks (Google “What is
Wind Fetch” for more on how this happens). This day the docks were bouncing around but seemed
to be handling the wave action well; unfortunately, this was not the case for about a half dozen of the
moored boats. To see a short video of the action click here. On Ddock alone we ended up securing five different boats and notifying owners of mooring issues. We had one mast come down, several bow and stern lines break, and a couple of spring lines
come loose. One poor Santana 20 now has a tennis ball size hole in the bow. I also retrieved a hand
full of bumpers that came off boats. This may be a good time for wet moorage boat owners to revisit the EYC Mooring Standards. You
can find them in your 2016 EYC Member Handbook on pages 49 and 50. If you have questions about
how to properly moor your boat, contact Port Captain Gordon Mattatall.

Important Reminders for Members
Leta Sellers, Commodore
On July 9 and 10 our club experienced some unseasonably high winds and resulting waves. Mooring lines were put to the test. With the help from watchful eyes and quick action on the part of our
Officer of the Day and other members, serious boat damage was averted. Any members who have
wet-moored boats are reminded to comply with the mooring standards outlined on pages 49 and 50 of
the 2016 EYC Member Handbook. Please do your part to protect your boat and moor it properly.
Also, a reminder to all travel trailer moorage holders: Please be responsible for signing in and dating the register when staying overnight at EYC. This is located in the foyer in the club on the glass clothing case. The club rule for the Trailer Sign-in Sheet (Club Rule D) is as
follows: Trailer moorage holders must use Club grounds a minimum of 10
days per season (April 1 – October 31). Trailer moorage holders must

The Thistles are Coming! The Thistles are Coming!
Stuart Ramsing, 2016 Thistle National Championship Regatta Chair
The Lido 14's start EYC’s run of national regattas followed
by over fifty Thistles that will be arriving for racing the last week
of July. Boats, crew, tents, and several RV's and trailers will
start rolling in starting Thursday, July 21 with the real crowd to
descend on the club Saturday, July 23.
With over fifty Thistles, crew, and land support, the club will
be busy and parking full. We will be shifting some EYC member
boat trailers for this event. As boat owners ourselves, we will
do it with care and attention. The grounds and boat moorage
will be restored to pre-regatta configuration on Saturday, July
31. Your patience and understanding during these busy weeks
at our usually tranquil retreat is very much appreciated!
Sometimes we take for granted what becomes our "normal
and routine." Hosting the Lido and Thistle National Championships gives everyone at EYC a fresh outside perspective and offers us all a reminder that we have a
world-class sailing venue, an envied park-like setting, and incredible people
behind 23-29
the efforts that
JULY
make events like this possible. The Eugene Yacht Club really is a standout destination for sailors
around the nation. Be proud!

Another Great Year for EYC Sail School
Kelly Reis & Al Avey, 2016 Sail School Directors

over 60 volunteers sharing their time, energy and
expertise to make Sail School the incredible experience that it is! Perhaps some of you who have
been around longer than we have are less awed
by the EYC member generosity that is the cornerstone of Sail School, but we are still warmed by
the outpouring of support. More sunny days than
wet ones never hurts, either!
We regret not thanking each volunteer personally during the week, and we don’t have room
to mention all by name here. Believe us—your
efforts are valued and make a difference! We
marvel thinking about the army of volunteers in
the kitchen ably lead by Anne Ellsworth and
Blanche Chase who prepared and served more
than 150 meals daily, not to mention cleaning
up after all those meals! To the instructors and
junior instructors (many of whom are unwitting
“lead instructors-in-training”—just ask Langdon

of recreational opportunities, on behalf of the students, we thank you! The rescue crews, skillfully

It is hard to believe another Sail School has
come and gone. At 52 students and 7 classes,
this year’s Sail School was smaller than usual, but
big on heart. Once again, the amazing community
that is EYC came through with flying colors, with
abilities to keep students happy and safe And
to those amazing volunteers like John Pfanner,
Rich Aaring, Leta Sellers, and Gary Powell, who
are poised to do whatever is needed next (even
when we didn’t know what was needed next) thank you. And this note would be incomplete
without a nod to all of those who gave up multiple
weekends to have the Zuma Docks ready for the
kids this year! What a transformation! Thank you
all!

Sail School is Sail School because of the volunteers who give their time to create this experience. Over the coming year, we encourage you
to reach out to Mike and June Chamberlin, who
have volunteered to be the 2017 Sail School Directors. Even if you can’t commit for the full week
of Sail School, or haven’t been involved in the
past and don’t know how best to help, there is a
spot for you and your time will make a difference.
Thanks to everyone for an incredible week.
Jr. Sailor Class Notes
Editor’s note: This year’s Jim Skeen Memorial Scholarship winners were asked to share a little of their
experience at Sail School. Hereare their thoughts:
I got a Jim Skeen Memorial Scholarship to
the EYC Sail School. It has been too much fun
here meeting everyone. But my three favorite
things to do are:
First, to solo sail because it feels like I am
connected to the boat, even in irons.
Second was the Thursday night race with
Kip, Buzz and Jim. One of their regular crew
members was on vacation so I got to fill in for
that crew member. The boat was named "Avalanche".
Third was sailing with Benjamin. He always
had a good attitude unless I was trying to capsize the boat, but he knows a lot more about
sailing a Zuma than I do.
Thank You, Patricia Skeen for this chance to
sail.

With such a terrific group of students this year,
competition for Corinthian Spirit Awards was particularly fierce, resulting in the need for multiple
tie-breaker votes. Congratulations to this year’s
This week at Sail School I learned a lot of
new knots and a lot of new sailing words. We
also got to rig and sail a DaySailer. The funnest
part of Sail School was meeting new people like
Nat, Carter, Mason, and a lot of other kids and
nice adults.
But the most grateful thing was to get a
scholarship and get to come back for a second
year.
Thank you so much, Skeen Family!

2016 Santana 20 Class Championship Report
This year’s Santana 20
Nationals were held at Klamath
Yacht Club on Upper Klamath
Lake. Eight races were sailed in
winds between 5 and 16 knots
predominantly from the northwest.
Seventeen teams from all over
the Northwest, Sacramento and
Colorado competed.
After Day One Ron Fish and his
team on Giddy Up held the regatta
lead by one point over three teams
who were tied for second.
After Day Two of racing, Team
Giddy Up held on to the regatta lead but this
time tied with Disaster Area, skippered by Eric
Kownacki, with former two-time class champion
Paul Stephens and his team on Aquila one point
back, and Gordon Mattatall and his team on H20
Boa three points back. Gordon’s team had started
the regatta on fire with wins of race #1 and #2
and going very fast and the right way, but an uncharacteristic 9th place in race #3 on Day One put
them back into the tight battle that was developing.
Going in to the last day four boats (Giddy Up,
Disaster Area, Aquila, and H20 Boa) had a chance
to win the championships and it came down to
the last race for these teams.
Team Giddy Up won the last race but was not
able to put the necessary boat between them and
Disaster Area, giving Disaster Area the overall regatta win.
The racing was so tight and back and forth
that any one of the top four teams could have
won. There was great racing throughout the fleet
with Team Fusion (Mark Erdrich from Folsom
photos courtesy of Andrew Kerr
Andrew Kerr, Sailing Coach
Lake) and Team Shenanigans with Kevin Dickey
from Eugene on the helm showing great speed
and smarts.
For Eric Kownacki this was his 6th win of the
championships, for Andrew Kerr his 11th win and
for Tom Jenkins his 5th win.
Class veteran and longtime class supporter
Ron Fish logged his 5th Second Place in the
championships. His team came very, very close
and will undoubtedly be rewarded with a victory
in the future as they sailed with great speed and
consistency.
Great social events put on by Klamath Yacht
club, tight racing on the lake, and great camaraderie ashore made for a good time on and off the
water. A big thank you to everyone at the Klamath
YC for putting on a great regatta for the Santana
20 class.
The class looks forward to seeing as many
teams as possible at next year’s championships
on Lake Dillon in August. It promises to be a terrific event on the beautiful Colorado Rocky mountains!

Thistle Districts
at Yale Lake
Sailing in the District regatta was necessary to qualify to compete in the Thistle National Championship to be held at EYC later this month, which accounted for a huge turnout of 27 boats at Yale Lake last
weekend. EYC was well-represented with nine skippers on the water: Terry Lettenmaier (who placed third
overall), Chip Balough, Stuart Ramsing, Andy Nousen, Michael Burand, Bill Powell, Mark Schroeder,
Evert Slijper, and Terry Sellers.

The minutes of monthly membership meetings are published in the EYC Bulletin. This replaces the reading of the previous
month’s minutes at each monthly meeting. Corrections or amendments should be directed to the EYC Secretary.
Minutes of the EYC General Membership Meeting held June 25, 2016
Board Members Present: Leta Sellers (Commodore), Ted Walkup (Vice Commodore), John Pfanner (Rear Commodore), Gary Powell (Secretary),
Anne Ellsworth (First Trustee), Bill Boyce (Second
Trustee).
Membership Report: (Mark Schroeder)
Mark reported that EYC has received 12 new
members this year. At the same time, we have lost
six members this year. The new provisional membership is working well.
Board Members Absent: Michael Merrifield
(Treasurer).
Marty Parisian called attention the EYC promotional postcards that can be given to friends and
neighbors to help promote the club. They are
available in the club house (on the glass clothing
case).
Commodore Leta Sellers called the meeting to
order at 7:33 p.m. She thanked the ShipShape
Committee for their work setting up the potluck.
No guests. Mark Schroeder introduced Mitko
Mitev as a new member. He has sailed a Lido 14
on Wednesdays for the past four years.
Leukemia/Lymphoma Cup: (Marty Parisien)
Marty said that this community fundraising event
is taking shape. It will be held September 4 from
2:00-8:00 pm. Most of committees are filled out.
Two EYC club members are heading up committees. A large number of people from the community are also taking leadership. Cost is $30 per
person or $100 for family of four or more. The
event includes a barbecue dinner, silent auction,
and opportunities to go on a champagne cruise
with members. Mike Tieman is looking for ‘larger’
boats that can take passengers sailing. Contact
him if you are interested in helping with this.
Port Captain Report: (John Franklin for Gordon
Mattatall)
John reported on the ‘walk around’ earlier today
to check on compliance with EYC moorage rules.
He is concerned that many of the boats on the
grounds are lacking current OR registration and
identifying information on trailers. He urged members to get their boats registered and bring them
into full compliance with EYC rules.
Port Commission Report: (Marji Clune)
Marji reported that roughly six families showed up
to work on the grounds today. The exterior club
house benches got stained. The exterior of the
back wall on women‘s restroom was also painted.
Question about who can sponsor new members.
Mark reminded the group that all members can
sponsor new members as long as they have belonged to EYC for a year. However, members can
only sponsor two new members per year.
Brief discussion about rules regarding Junior
Members being on the grounds (See Bylaws Article II, Section 3.c).
Bill Powell reported on the Open House which
was held last Wednesday during Sail School. We
had several interested persons visit the club.
Club Manager Report: (Rich Aaring)
Rich reported that he has 3-4 new membership
applications (with checks) on his desk which he
will process this week. Memorial Day Regatta had
53 boats. He expects that the regatta will turn a
small profit thanks to Dean Mitchell‘s leadership.
Sail School was held this past week. This weekend is TYC Emerald Cup Regatta.
Rich reminded members to please mow around
and under boats and trailers. The gas pump
stopped working last week. Rich had a repair person check it, but made the decision not to repair
it due to age and cost. He filled up the several
tanks and transported them with his pickup truck.
We are planning to decommission the tank this
coming year. At this point, there is no gas available for boaters on the lake.

page 20
Minutes: continued from previous page
Treasurer’s Report: (Gary Powell for Mike Merrifield)
Accounts Receivable is currently $13,870. Michael contacted several members who are behind
to make sure they were receiving electronic billing. General Repairs this year have been $8,471
including repairs from the wind storm. CapEx fund
currently stands at $113,444.
Minutes of May 21, 2016 MOTION: To approve
the minutes of May 21 as published in the Bulletin
(S-C).
Old Business:
Leta reported on Memorial Day Regatta. She
thanked Rich Aaring for heading up the race committee. She also thanked Janet Mitchell for heading up the food. Leta mentioned that EYC fed the
largest number of people she has seen in recent
memory.
Live on the Edge Multihull Regatta was headed
up by Roeland Kapsenberg. They had great wind
throughout the regatta.
Sail School just finished. We had a great week
with students and volunteers. Leta recognized all
who volunteered at Sail School this year. Anne
gave special thanks to Blanche Chase. Leta recognized Glen Hughes and all the volunteers who
worked to get the Zuma docks finished in time
for Sail School. They were completing this project
while students were checking in last Sunday!
Leta reported on the attenuator/breakwater plans.
EYC will be receiving two bids from marine engineering firms by July 1. Our primary goal is come
up with a viable option to protect our docks from
wave damage.
New Business:
Fourth of July is coming up in one week. Parade
is at 3:00 pm. Talent show follows. Dinner is at
5:00 pm. Fireworks will be larger than ever. There
will be overflow parking at Bangs Farm.
The washer and dryer in “C” locker are reserved
for the Club Host and for washing EYC kitchen
towels. The coin operated washers and dryers in
the Yot Pot are available for general membership
use. Leta wants to explore making these washers
and dryers free to members.
Leta thanked Gale Morgan for hooking up a drain
on the ice machine at the back porch of the clubhouse. Leta mentioned that there may be some
unauthorized people on the club grounds. She
asked members to be aware of who is on the
grounds and to introduce themselves to people
that they don’t recognize.
Susan Bloom asked if the Club Hosts are introducing themselves to members. Suggestion to
have the Club Hosts attend General Membership
meetings. Suggestion to introduce the Club Hosts
on the Monday of Sail School.
Janelle Skeen raised a concern that our Gate
Code is widely known in the community. Terri
Ward raised concern that gate shouldn’t be kept
open during Sail School.
Rich Johnson raised concern about the current
Club Host model. Is the board hearing from members that we should move back the Caretaker
model. He believes that a number of members
would be willing to pay more dues for greater
security.
Discussion about helping newer members get to
know others in the club.
Leta mentioned that people should avoid placing
large items in the trash area. Anne mentioned that
we are making progress on the recycling program.
Question about adding a can/bottle recycling
container near the vending machine.
Judy Mustoe Slijper asked members to consider
donating money for new club house chairs. Cost
is $15.95 per chair. She would like to purchase
100 new chairs for $1,600. She has raised $800
already. She also asked members to take care in
setting up the tables. They are very lightweight
and don’t require much effort to set up. Suggestion to mark “EYC” on the new chairs.
Mike Tieman asked everyone to get on the EYC
page and “like” it which raises our profile on the
“Social Media.”
Meeting adjourned at 8:51 p.m.
