KENTUCKY EQUINE MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Fall 2007
KEMI NEWS
L
EXINGTON—
Twenty-three interns,
representing 13 states and the
countries of Poland and Argentina, were selected to participate in the Fall 2007
session of the Kentucky
Equine Management Internship (KEMI) program.
The Fall session began with
a week-long short course, intended to bring all the interns
up-to-date on the vast thoroughbred industry in Central
Kentucky. The were guests of
several major farms including
Three Chimneys Farm, Hill
‘N’ Dale, Lane’s End/Oak Tree
Division, Old Friends Farm,
and Juddmonte Farms. In addition, the interns also visited
Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, Rood & Riddle Equine
Hospital, Farmers Feed Mill,
KESMARC, Ken McPeek
Racing Stable, Keeneland, the
Thoroughbred Training Center,
Fasig-Tipton and Churchill
Downs Racetrack. The week
was capped off by an afternoon
of racing at River Downs
Racetrack which included a
trip to the Winners’ Circle.
After completing the Short
Course experience, the interns
began working on area Thoroughbred farms where the majority have been working with
yearlings headed to the
Keeneland September Yearling
Sale or Fasig-Tipton Fall Yearling Sale in October. After the
yearling sales, most of the interns will begin working with
mares and weanlings that will
be sold in November at the
Keeneland Sale. The interns at
Pin Oak Stud and Juddmonte
Farms have been working with
yearlings that are being prepared to begin their racing careers. In addition to this daily
work, the interns also attend
weekly educational lectures
given by some of the most
prominent individuals in Thoroughbred racing and farm
management in Central Kentucky. They also attend the
monthly meetings of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm
Managers Club (KTFMC).
These weekly lectures and
monthly meetings provide
multiple networking opportunities to the interns and help
Fall 2007 K E M I Interns
them refine their career choices.
Host farms for this group of
interns include Ashford Stud,
Creekview Farm, Crestwood
Farm, Dell Ridge Farm,
Hunter Valley Farm, Juddmonte Farms, Lane’s
End/Oak Tree Division, Margaux Farm, Mill Ridge Farm,
Pin Oak Stud, Shawnee Farm,
Stonestreet Farm, Three Chimneys Farm and Trackside
Farm.
KEMI offers two different
internship sessions each year.
The Spring session (JanuaryJune) provides opportunities to
work with and learn about
mares and foals, while the Fall
session (July-December) concentrates on sales preparation
and early race-training. Applications for either KEMI session, as well as additional
information about the program
can be found on the KEMI
website: www.kemi.org
To date, KEMI has provided
internship opportunities to
more than 250 interns from 45
different states and 15 foreign
countries. Many of our graduates have found rewarding careers in the equine industry
thorough the contacts made
during their time in the program. KEMI is supported by
the generous contributions of
area farms, businesses, foundations and individual donors.
KEMI is a non-profit corporation and all donations to the
program are tax-deductible.
Questions about making a donation to KEMI should be forwarded to the Program
Coordinator.
