Presidents Report
Peter Hullett
For our final edition of Topspin for 2015, I would like to wish every member a very
happy, safe and fulfilling Christmas and New Year. I hope everyone has had their
tennis fix for the year and that perhaps after some time off during the festive season
you will all be keen to get out on court again in 2016 and enjoy the facilities and
tennis that our club has to offer. That we are able to offer an excellent facility for
tennis, as well as socially, is in no small measure due to Floreat’s army of dedicated
volunteers. As we end the year, I would like to extend a special thank you to all
those who have donated their time and efforts to the club over the last 12 months;
to those who have served on the committee, helped out at tournaments, provided
content for and published Topspin, set up for social functions, maintained the garden
and the clubhouse, arranged pennant teams, performed Saturday afternoon sets
duty, stocked the bar, and worked behind the bar. All your magnificent efforts are
appreciated and help keep our club operational as well as ‘attractive’.
All our members should share in our club’s successes but it is important that,
wherever possible, we add to our volunteer army so that those successes are not
attributable only to a small number of people. If you are able to give some time, on
occasions, to help out, please let a committee member know!
I hope all members will enjoy reading this (as with every other) edition of Topspin
and reflect on how lucky we are to belong to such a wonderful, inviting tennis club.
Once again, a very happy Christmas and New Year.

Captains Report
Brian Seow
The Club’s 2015 / 2016 season was officially opened by outgoing Town of Cambridge Mayor
Simon Withers with good weather prompting a good attendance of visitors, family and
friends of current members, and sponsors. Our appreciation goes to everyone who prepared
food and cakes for tea and also to the social committee for organizing the end-of-day
refreshments.
Pennants season is underway and it is customary to see all our courts at full capacity on
Saturdays. With the holiday festive season just round the corner, normal social play will
continue as usual throughout Christmas and the New Year, so don’t be afraid come down
to the club, as there will always be someone for a hit up. It is useful to note that there are
many other opportunities to play at the club at different times of the week. Sunday tennis
is open to all full-time and midweek members. On Wednesdays, there is organised men’s
tennis from 2:00 p.m. followed by “Twilight Tennis” later from 5:00 p.m. onwards.
Just a point of order, when the sets have been put up, with players already on court, it
is everyone’s responsibly to go, without delay, to their designated court and partners.
Please refrain from causing a delay by “requesting a change of courts or partners”. This is
inconsiderate to others who have to wait for you. When the sets have been put up and the
bell rung, it is final. The Set Captains usually have their hands full as it is. Similarly, if you
won’t be playing in the next set, please put a line through your name tag so that the Set
Captains know beforehand.
The annual Cambridge Cup was hosted this year at Reabold Tennis Club. We were
represented by Justin Manaf, Jason Hiew, Osman Hadziomerovic, Philip Weerakody, Arthur
Ferriera, Peter Hullet, Daniel Arshard, Brian Seow, Paul Courtis (reserve), Deb Taylor,
Denise Cramer, Caroline Gibson, Jan Yeo, Junko Kamitsuma, Kay Wood, Michelle Kelly, Carol
Callaghan & Elena Holt (reserve) all of whom who played at their best performance both on
and off the courts. I was impressed by the high standard of play with our team finishing
in second place. I would like to take the opportunity to say a big “Thank You” to everyone
who attended and hope this good result will give more incentive to players for next year’s
charge to win the cup. Well done, despite having little time to recover from the Christmas
Party the night before!
Thanking and Wishing Everyone a Safe and HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR!

Report
Brad Millman
Hi everyone,
I hope you are all enjoying the summer tennis season so far. Please see my report
below.
Wembley Primary School link up with FPTC
In October 2015 the Floreat Park Tennis Club and Wembley Primary School signed a
‘Schools in Sport’ agreement which will bring kids and families to our great club for
many years to come. Justin Manaf delivered a very successful in-school tennis program
during Term 4, and on December 4, over 120 students and parents attended our club
for a tennis open day which included coaching, games, music and a sausage sizzle.
Considering there are over 800 kids at the school, having that many at the club on one
afternoon was fantastic but to have over 800 to draw from is great for the club. I’d like
to thank the Wembley sports teacher, Lee Stringer for organising the tennis afternoon.
Junior Winter Pennants
The junior teams representing the club have all had a great start to the pennant season.
The standing are below:
1st - 14’s Boys Div 12
2nd - 9-12 Years Green Ball Mixed Div 14
2nd - 14’s Girls Div 3
2nd - 16’s Boys Div 8

Good luck to everyone for the remainder of the season.
Brad’s Tennis Tip
Does a part of your racquet hand move or slip as you hit the tennis ball? This is a very
common problem in all levels of players. My tip is to make sure that you have no gaps
between your hand (palm and fingers) and the grip before you hit but more importantly
after you hit. Also try holding the grip a little firmer at the point of contact. If your grip
still seems to be slipping then you’re probably due for a new grip...which are available in
the Pro Shop.
I hope to see you down at the club soon.
Regards,
Brad Millman

Social Report
Denise Cramer
The highlight of the Floreat Park Tennis Club’s social calendar is always the annual
Christmas Party and this year was no exception with a “Casino Royale” evening
enjoyed by 76 guests on Saturday 12th December.
Vive Las Vegas provided croupiers at a large roulette table and blackjack table and
gave everyone $1000 “funny” money to spend. Thus it was elbow room only all night
at the tables! Elena was a noticeable serious participant as was Minh! However it
was Lisa Millman who managed to take home the prize of “Highest Roller” while Alan
Potts was awarded “Biggest Loser”. Best dressed Bond man and woman was tightly
contested with James Trapnell and Rookie Northwood winning the right to wear the
crown!
Entertainment was provided by “The Money Pennys” who danced to Uptown Funk,
and flown in from Vegas to also entertain us was Elvis ably accompanied by the
YumYums! A huge thank you to all those involved for their many hours of dedicated
rehearsals!
Once again our wonderful social committee came to the party to supply scrumptious
nibbles followed by beef bourguignon catered by Cherry Bombe Catering and dessert.
This year Glenn Liew was our very capable MC who showed his skills with table-side
chats and running commentary throughout the evening. Thank you Glenn – the gig is
yours from now on!!
Special thanks to Fred Santich for his tireless efforts in convincing members to
purchase tickets to this salubrious event as well as carting drums, climbing ladders,
cleaning up Sunday morning and a myriad of other jobs that he does quietly behind
the scenes. A huge thank you once again to our hardworking bar staff/judges, Jenni,
Ryan and Squeezy for keeping us all well-hydrated.
Please keep an ear and eye out for Australia Day celebrations at the club which will
be confirmed shortly.

VALE Darren Tandy
12/5/67 - 24/12/15
Floreat Park Tennis Club pays tribute to Darren Tandy, who passed away on
Christmas Eve 2015. Darren was Floreat’s head coach and centre manager
from 2001 to 2008, and would be known, and fondly remembered, by many of
the club’s current members. Darren worked hard to increase the club’s profile,
visibility and use by members and hirers, and also coached and mentored some
of WA’s top players - Matt Ebden being one - focusing as much on the mental
side of tennis as the technical. He later gained an international reputation by
coaching Russian top-30 player Dimitry Tursunov and, subsequently, the British
player James Ward. Darren was a committed servant of tennis, an incredibly
affable individual with a great sense of humour, and a good friend to those who
needed his help. The WA and international tennis community is poorer for his loss.
He leaves behind wife, Tita, and three children, to whom we extend our sincere
sympathy.
Darren’s funeral was held on Thursday 7 January at Karrakatta.

VALE Bev Rule
Although it is some years since Bev has played at Floreat there will still be members
who remember her with great affection.
Sadly she passed away in November.
Bev was for a time Club Captain and could always be relied on to do her bit in the
kitchen at the Junior Tennis Tournament which used to be run by Floreat.
She was always decked out in her Scotch College apron, a petite figure and always
with a smile on her face.
Her tenure was at the time of Jenni Lockwood’s wonderful Review nights and Bev was
always a main player. Some of her characters being Tina Turnip and Her Trollops, Dolly
Farton, Jane, like you have never seen her before in Tarzan and Jane, and The Lady
Tramp just to name a few.
Bev was always lots of fun – we will miss her...Rest well Bev.
